The foundation of the city is attributed to the beginning of the 12th century. During the Batyev invasion in 1238, Tver, like many other cities, was destroyed. In the 14th and 16th centuries, despite the Tatars' raids and internecine wars, the Tver principality was a strong independent state. The main feature of this lay-out was the long axial Millionnaya street (now Sovetskaya).
In 1931 Tver was renamed Kalinin in honor of the native of the Tver province of the Soviet political figure MI Kalinin. In the 30-ies in the fight against religion, the Cathedral Transfiguration Cathedral was blown up. The city of Tver was seriously damaged during the occupation and heavy fighting during the Great Patriotic War. In 1990, the city was returned to its historical name - Tver and the coat of arms.
