The best sounding A4 in DCC? Locoman sounds in a Hornby A4

A recently obtained Locoman sound file for A4 pacifics (available at www.locomansounds.com) was installed into my model of 60025 Falcon (a renumbered Hornby 60024 Kingfisher). This project is on a Loksound V4 and I would have to say that the combination of crystal clear recordings with the functionality of the Loksound V4 means that this is probably the best sound loco I have at the moment. Even better, the drivability of it is superb and only a little bit of tweaking was required to get it to work prototypically.
The decoder comes with very comprehensive functions and I have only shown probably half of them on this video, plus there are many more tweaks that can be done if you feel so inclined.
The playable whistle feature is excellent, but perhaps the thing that impressed me most is how it sounds at speed. Too many sound chips sound like a chaff cutter at high speed, but this one sounds like an A4 even near flat out.
This sound decoder and many others can be found on Locoman's website at www.locomansounds.com/

I miss the old independently-run cafe at Wakefield Westgate that was there before the station was redeveloped. Now it's just another expensive chain outlet. There's still a good cafe at Wakefield Kirkgate though, with very friendly staff all neatly dressed in traditional waitress outfits. Bring back station masters like Bernard Cribbins I say!

I'm just getting into steam and dcc sound. This is the best A4 souns in OO I've ever heard! That whistle is fantastic and worth it for that alone... I'm still learning all the technicalities but if I put one of these Locoman chips in a Hornby A4, this is what it will sound like? LokSound 4 etc is all alien to me. PS 14 people are obviously deaf. 😄
@trw1089
@trw1089 3 года назад
Yep, this is exactly what a Locoman A4 decoder sounds like. The speaker is important too, in this I’ve used the ESU sugar cube speaker mounted high up in the tender so it uses the tender body as part of the baffle.

WOW WOW WOW! If this sound is installed onto a Loksoud V4 XL decoder, does it have the capability to have synchronized puffing smoke?

@trw1089
@trw1089 4 года назад
Green Shark in that one I used a sugar cube speaker, but now I use Tang Band ones from Parts Express. Speakers are a big part of the sound but if you mount the speaker high up in the tender too, you get a much nicer overall sound than lower down. For most locos, I suggest the ESU sugar cube would be a good default option, and once you get a bit of experience, then start experimenting with the different types and where you place them.
@LHoriginal

@@trw1089 thank you for replying. Which sugar cube do you use? Is it the single or double?

MHMMMM well the Robin sining is nice but why does the Curlew sound exactly like a Pheasant - exactly. Thats what happens when a bird nerd watches a train nerds posts. Anyway I'm partially migrating to twitching to starting a layout and this has helped with seeing the extreme end of decoder use and sound so thanks. I will only be running trains with bird names and hadn't previously known about Curlew.
@trw1089

Thanks Connor - it’s a 3 cylinder loco so they have 6 beats per revolution, not 4. If there is one thing I am very pedantic about it’s making sure my locos have the correct 4 or 6 beats per revolution.

ROB EVANS sorry but I respectfully disagree. I’m a qualified steam driver, have built live steam locos and have ridden, chased and made sound recordings of many steam locos all over the world. This is one of the best simulations of steam sound I have in OO scale. It will always have compromises, but compare it to anything else that is attempting to simulate sound in model scale and it far better and more advanced. I used to make sound files for train simulators and this is a much better replication of steam loco sound than just about anything I have heard on simulators. It also is not just about the sound, but how the sound makes you drive the models much more realistically. I find having sound on DCC makes for a far more realistic model railway than one without. If you ask just about anyone who runs with or without sound, they will tell you that DCC sound adds a much greater dimension to a layout than just about anything else. I resisted sound on this layout for a long time, because none of the steam sounds were up to scratch when I started, but now I have over a dozen sound equipped locos because of decoders like this one. Perhaps you need to try out a good sound decoder for yourself, not a cheap TTS or Economi chip, but one of these ones from Locoman, Wheeltappers or SWD. It is also about the speakers too, I’ve been doing a fair bit of testing of these and they make the world of difference.
