Dear Ken, just bought my first original Blue Note - Moods by The 3 Sounds, and I have you to blame for that - and its absolutely fantastic! I knew the music from Spotify but this is a completely different experience... It sounds great and swings like hell. It's also wonderful to be part of that history by holding an actual original. And it showed me again how carefully crafted the Tone Poet series really is, when I compare them to an original. So thanks for inspiring me and greetings from Vienna, Austria!
The wealth of knowledge and passion you share on these videos is a gift. Thanks. Great info for novices like me to dig deeper into this world. Awesome stuff. Thanks.
Hey Ken, like your vibe. I found you today and watched a half a dozen of your jazz music selections, plus your take on the albums you like or the one's we should check out. I am new to jazz and only 7 years in. A lot to learn and get in the groove. Sometimes it will take me many times to listen till I get it, but when I do it is worth it. Thanks for all that you do and share. Spokane Splotch says good night and keep spinning........PS. I think mono recordings make me feel I am right there and hear all the little things that are not all jumbled up in stereo...
Lovin the videos mate. Quick question, i need to buy a replacement A Love Supreme but without breaking the bank what are the better reissues ? I’m getting a lot of Audio Clarity pressings, are they bad ? Thanks.
I have not heard those pressings, but discogs says it's a "Russian bootleg label that releases unauthorized reissues." Cut from CDs. But are you happy with the pressings? That's all that matters, though you would hear more of the actual recording details with a better pressing. For 15 more than an Audio Clarity pressing, this is a GRP pressing that I think is all analog, www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-COLTRANE-A-LOVE-SUPREME-Impulse-GR-155-Limited-Edition/363292302527?hash=item5495e89cbf:g:3xkAAOSwLIhgFcI-
Late comment here: When I first heard Mr Kenyatta on Lee Morgan's Search For The New Land, My First thought was This is the best sounding Blue Note record I ever heard....Something about the the audio quality and how it made me feel. I felt I was in the studio watching them record live. This is not my favorite Blue Note album by any means..But for audio quality it's still the number one IMO
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 please help me find source info for the tracks on the compilation: Cafe New York the Greatest Songbook of New York City (3cd) (2011 Music Brokers Argentina)
had never ordered a mono until the other day. I am on an out of state project so when I get back I will finally get to hear it. Never heard mono explained- its an art in the mix. I missed out on getting the mono Hendrix Are you experienced from Audio Soultions they were sold out. I will now not shy away from Mono.
Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Lover - I got a 45 RPM mono of the Mamas and Papas. Really like it and I used my normal set up. I will get a proper cartridge and set up for mono later on , but I really liked it.
Monos seem to have more slam overall. I have both stereo and mono of those Impact LPs on RCA and those crime jazz LPs from the '50s, both of which I love, but man, the Monos really kick.
Great list Ken. I am still trying to get a couple of those. I have lost ten or so auctions for that Three Sounds album. So you got to tell me...what happened to your Ultrasonic Cleaner?
I imagine you've seen the Blue Note Story Documentary. There is a segment where they describe the disc lacquer cutting process. Might you know where that can be found for home viewing?
Would you need a mono cartridge to fully appreciate the mono LP's or even the normal stereo cartridge would do? I have a few mono and they sound good to me, but i wonder if they would sound different with a mono cartridge.
Hey Ken, do you find these old Blue Note originals to play best on simple Conical or Elliptical Styli or finer Shibata, Microline or Paratrace profiles? I value record preservation over sound so I use the finer types but they do seem to introduce more surface noise generally.
...a little bar in Harlem in 1968--well, maybe not 1968, they were burning it down! (Even a hick from Nebraska gets that and it cracked me up.) Nice job again, Ken. Murf.
Well, I've been in Seattle for pushin' 30 years so, no idea about Nebraska. It's okay, I guess. I'm still trying to figure it out. Trying to stick to used jazz and it's pretty slim pickin's most days. I try to put pics up on the JVL FB group when I find something interesting. Just a noob!
As I found my first Blue Note mono, I allow myself to post my thoughts. I heard now an old mono, some Liberty, some Japan, some DMM, Tone Poets, 75 and 80´s anniversary. Yes, the mono has the most power, they jump out of the speakers like nothing, but to me it is a little to much, for my taste I like the Liberty more. The old mono is obviously mastered for older stereos, I think this is main reason that they have so much upper mid and highs, for my taste? I like the mono thing, but the power is to much for me and I am a musician myself and I also have some Heavy Metal records in my collection:-)
C'mon, man! You know that Three Sounds cover had,at the time, the future Mrs. Alfred Lion on it. BTW,"Buhaina's Delight" is a fave of mine, too. But if you didn't pronounce it properly-"Bu-HAY-na" ,as in Roy Haynes- Blakey would have called you on it. Now, keep swingin'!
The cleaner didn't damage them, I forgot to switch drain valve off when filtering the water. Some of the water leaked onto the albums...sorry for the confusion.
Great video man. I need to check out the Larry Young, had not seen that one before. Tony Williams on Hal Galper’s Now Hear This is unreal. Maybe the baddest ass record ever recorded in my opinion. Not on Blue Note though. My favorite Blue Note’s are Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Witch Doctor, Clifford Brown - Memorial Album and Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil.
Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Lover Performance wise on those. Sonically I would say Sonny Rollins - Newk’s Time and Wayne Shorter - Night Dreamer are the best I have which you showed.
