One other advantage of the base engine is that the smaller turbos kick in at lower RPM and spool up faster than the bigger turbos from the S. makes driving the base that much more enjoyable when you’re not going flat out (which is a rare occurrence on public roads anyway)
My wife and I landed on the 992 T when we couldn't get an allocation for a GTS. Porsche's 50k loss in margin turned to our benefit, as this has proven to be a remarkable car. It is the largest car in our garage, so handles grocery duties, and does so with aplomb. The car is competent in the snow as well, just not when there has been a good amount of accumulation (low ride height makes it a plow). The seventh gear is fantastic on highway drives, and the first six gears are close enough spaced to give a competent range for each selection. The sound you noted in the negatives is very much a function of the reduced sound deadening from the car, as well as the light weight windows. I find it more engaging as a consequence; you do hear more in the T, but not so much more that you can't have a conversation on the phone at 120mph. Short of a GT3 Touring, I wouldn't trade a T for any higher priced model in the lineup.
I love your driving skills; you talk and corner simultaneously at high speed. Agreed with your comments, except for the real steering wheels. Unfortunately, only PDK is available in China. I am collecting my new 911 Carrera T 992.1 in five days :)
Great review Joe 👏 I had a 991 T, sold it with house renovations going on, l wish l hadn't. The 991 had shorter ratios too, it topped out below 70 in 2nd gear. Yes rear seats are the usp of a 911. It's the perfect road car, hopefully I'll afford one again someday?! Ps enjoy the warm weather 😎
Really good review. Thank you. Not the 992 for me, but it's clearly the one to go for if you want a manual coupe. My main concerns are the lower, stiffer suspension, and the fact that you are stuck with a black interior -- although if I had to have a black interior the Sport-Tex has to be the way to go. And I have to admit the sports exhaust also sounded good; I didn't notice any annoyingly incessant pops and bangs.
Joe, I would pretty much spec mine the same as your spec. I had an allocation for a T a few months ago, but had to back out due to life circumstances. But I’m so glad I did because NOW I really know how to spec my forever Porsche - the only car I will need for the rest of my life, to drive every day and grow old with! I don’t care that I could’ve saved money because this was before the price increase, but to me the right spec is more important than money. I also need to thank the new ST for making me realize that the simpler the 911 the better. Yes, no BS rear wheel steering. Always love your videos Joe. And I have a strange feeling you will own a T one day real soon. Keep on rolling my friend and hope to meet you one day…
I had a 7 speed manual 991.1. The best way to deal with coming down from 7th is to use the lockout. Not sure if still the same on the 992 but on the 991, you could only get to 7th from 5th and 6th. So when decelerating off the highway, pop the lever briefly into neutral and then back up and right for 5th. It’s still plenty long, zero issues.
That’s a good strategy. I’ll try that later. Also, given 7th is never needed while driving fast, it’s less important that it’s a little deliberate in use. I do enjoy the box less overall though, than the 6sp in my last Cayman GTS 4.0.
The first modern day Porsche that I find interesting. Simple lines, no stupid spoilers, manual gearbox. Why do manufacturers constantly chase performance at the expense of driver involvement?
Because the people who can actually afford them cares about the numbers and status more than the experience? They wouldn’t put their money into things you claim to hate if it wasn’t selling in the first place.
Very interesting review. Were I to choose a 992 today, it would be this car, with the manual gearbox, the back seats and the nose lift (very practical, not to say indispensable in various situations, considering the 992 T has the lowered chassis). I agree with you that one can happily live without the rear steering wheels. For daily use and enjoyment, the more powerful 911ses are needlessly powerful and can easily get you into trouble if you exploit their potential on open roads. As a matter of fact, the most convincing experience I have had at the wheel of a sports car is driving the base Alpine A 110. Which doesn’t prevent me from being a Porsche enthusiast 😄
T is the pick of the litter IMO...I'll take mine in Gentian Blue with stripe delete, carbon roof, keep the rear seats, manual of course, no RWS, and enjoy.
I have a 2024 Carrera T, 7 speed. Spent $150k for it, and i would say totally worth it. Not a quiet car, but super fun to drive. So fast, I couldn’t imagine needing a faster car on the road.
I purchased a 2024 Carrera S, 7 speed. I spent $158k and find a way to enjoy all 443 hp from time to time. Sure I don’t really need to use it but it sure is a blast when I do. The T was a hot car during Covid with good resale value. I considered a used 991.2 T before I received my C2S allocation but couldn’t justify the price (low mileage cars were often at or over list)
I too am lucky enough to have one of these Carrera T's and absolutely love the car. And you optioned it almost exactly as I did but I added a carbon fiber roof (mainly for looks, honestly, but did seem consistent with the whole weight savings thing) and a front end axle lift because I'm surrounded by challenging driveways and haunted by my perfectionist attitude. Also opted for the Carrera Exclusive wheels which are forged and more importantly... bitchin' lookin'! Unfortunately the Bose was not an option in '23 otherwise I would have ticked that box. But... excellent review and thanks for taking us on a fun drive!
@@steveross8811 great question. I contacted Crutchfields and they don;t yet have the intel on the 992 (in other words, they haven't taken one apart yet) and I also spoke with a local specialist shop that works on a lot of Porsches. They didn;t have any specific experience with the 992 yet either. I actually think all it really needs is a self-powered bass module hooked up to the stock system (head unit). That would suffice for me, but I have not yet determined if this is a possibility. And in the end the car is NOT a candidate for an awesome stereo - loud, lessened sound deadening, etc - and I drive the car for the experience not for the stereo.
I daily one… awesome car. Had the previous generation 991 T… not nearly as good IMO. Overall, very easy to drive , great blend of daily driving and performance. Good review. Keep it up
That definitely is the model to buy and it wouldn't surprise me if Porsche played down the figure's regarding it's ability and performance as they would rather you spend a bucket load more money for a higher model (it's good business sense) which is essentially the same car mechanically as the base model. Also it keeps production costs down all being similar but they do have to cover all price points, it is the perfect sports car and there is no reason to look elsewhere 😂 Joe I hope they are giving you a commission for this review as I could see a few purchases off the back it you can tell the impression it's giving you in the driving experience is off the charts great review Joe and what a car you have created Porsche!!
Rushed up review or either not, it's still a banger of a video Joe. I really love the way how you describe your experiences with this beautiful car in only two days of driving. Great content Joe! 😎👍
Thank you so much…great review, love your enthusiasm for the car even having just gotten out of a Sports Classic! Have a T coming in 3 weeks time, so this review definitely wetted my appetite!
I’m convinced the manual , narrower bodied, 991 T is going to be collectors item for years to come. They didn’t make many, its unique, perfect car for the roads.
The 911 T is an amazing car, BUT - impossible to get one (at least in the US / Southern California) without a material dealer markup. Can't even get a base 911 without ADM nowadays :(
Having difficulty keeping up with the content at the moment Joe, Australia blog this morning now this. I would like that car if only I could afford it!
Excellent review, love your enthusiasm Joe. Does it appeal more than the cheaper non turbo Cayman GTS 4.0? Interesting that the performance claims are a touch slower than the cheaper still M2 (mine coming in a couple of weeks).
@@markofjpeezy3705 Now trying to get a Boxster GTS 4.0 for my wife. £30k less than a 992 Cab, narrower (which is much better where we live), rear boot more convenient than back 'seats' - so have not seriously considered the 992. I have driven the Boxster which is great - but it is not clear if a new one is available before the end of production (electric replacement coming soon).
Not a fan of yellow! Great car tho, would love to know the different between this engine and the one in the GTS, or if it is just mapping. Also a good set of goodyear eagle f1 Asymmetric 6 tyres would sort the tyre noise out, they are the quiest sports tyres available.
Small correction: the Carrera-T does not have GTS suspension components. My understanding is that the Carrera-T suspension is the Sport-PASM suspension from the Carrera-S and not the one from the GTS that is derived from the turbo-series.
For me this is the bes“T“! It is all about driving pleasure and this 911 delivers. Maybe one of the last modern cars that gives you some of that analogue feelings. A 992.2 version may be hybrid and corrupted by overcautious safety control and nanny system.
This box is very good and it is impossible for me after 3 months of having a 992/7 speed to miss shift either up or down, a master piece of engineering. Considering the high torque plateau the long gearing is not an issue, it was on my previous NA 981 gt4. Do not forget that the manual has a mechanical limited slip differential vs an electronic version on the pdk again it gives back Some raw natural driving feelings. Not talking about genius steering feedback, brake feel. Mine is under 1500 kg. For the moment I do not notice that tirés noise (I have the rear seats).
Base engine Porsches with the GTS dynamic options (or the T form which is the same), are the way to go for a road car. My Cayman is specced exactly like that. And it’s sublime. You can really work it for the performance. It’s FAR more fun than an over powered car.
Lovely spec and thorough review as always, really appreciate the reviews of cars we may never get too drive - need to convince the Mrs this would be a good work car 😅
Totally on the same page. My last 991.2 GTS had RWS PDCC and PDK and I wouldn't tick any of them again just buy a cayman if you want a mid engined 911 experience. After 4 911,s im bored with them now so wont be getting a fifth but if I did it would be this T and in virtually the spec you describe except colour. Although you're a BMW fan boy does seem you're on the money. 😊
I’ve never considered the Carrera T before but it actually makes sense - the only thing I would like is to spec it without the blacked-out trim. I prefer it to be more classy but still looks good
two questions, 1. The T or the S if the price delta is not an issue? and then 2. 992.1 or 992.2 given the 992.2s revised uglier (subjective) front grill and all digital display; but there might be some pluses in terms of more power, more color options and some other minor things.
I've had faster cars so for me this needs a good tune to make it perfect. Add a Soul or Kline exhaust and I'm set. Hopefully mine will be here before winter!
Great video of another great 992. Out of interest which of your favourite roads are you on for this drive? Looks like the same drive you've used in previous 992 reviews. 👍
had mine for six weeks, in GT metallic silver with rear wheel steer, held back on options - with pdk it still remarkable. I am sure driving experience different to manual, but super slick box and well fast enough. only thing is they put goodyears on it though, noisy!
Nice review Joe, but I'm not sure what 992 GTS suspension parts you are referring to that is in the Carrera T. I have a 992 GTS, and it comes with 992 Turbo/S spec suspension with the addition of helper springs. The 992 Carrera T doesn't have the same setup.
I’m currently in the process of bartering with an OPC to replace my F82 M4 Comp with a mega spec 992 S and we are 2.5k adrift to sealing a deal. I’ve dug my heels in and won’t budge further….. This video isn’t helping enforce my stubbornness!!!! If anyone is after a mint mineral grey F82 - give me a shout 😂😂
I had a hunch you'd love it. So now, as a fellow Hockenheim Silver M2 Comp owner, which would you rather have for a daily driver--an M2 Comp or this Carrera T?
I owned the 991.2 T, which I feel made more sense. Weigh savings for both 991.2 and 992 are so small, they're irrelevant. The reason to get a 992 T is if you want the base with a manual and some of the other features unavailable on the base (RAS, etc.). I still think the T is a great car even with the price increase, but I opted to jump to a 992 GTS. I just finished 1741 miles in Europe before it gets shipped to the US. The GTS feels much more sporty and has more low end torque, which is great when you don't want to wring it out all the time. You also get larger brakes, forged rims, sport design front/back, and way more power. I've driven the 992 S as well and that would be the only other 992 I would consider right now. I think the price jump from the T to the S makes it worth it. The T is just a bit too underpowered and I don't do aftermarket upgrades. For me the only 992 better than the GTS would be a GT3, if I could get one.
Hi Joe! I have an M2 Comp similar to yours and have been considering switching to a 992 Carrera T. Would you make the change coming from the M2 Comp? Thanks!
Always love your videos! I just posted a video of my Targa4GTS Manual as well! I was torn between the 911 T and the Targa, but I went with the Targa eventually
if you were trying to scream at others "I don't know or care about driving but I wanted a Porsche anyway", congraz, you did it!(targa, awd and automatic... the "best" combo in a Porsche! 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️.. honestly, when all of you seem to be so "briliant", I'm *NOT* asking myself how the eff in the world did you manage to make the money in order to afford a 911..no, I'm asking myself, how the eff you lot don't forget to breath.. as, based on your Porsche choices, even that should be a struggle!)
Honestly the base or the S is already better performing than 996 turbo. It is almost too powerful for real road use unless no dipped limits are available
'A Carrera T vs a 718 GTS 4.0 N/A engine where god would have it, sublime handling, size, interior buttons...mmmmm...my bet is on the latter for the best sports car Porsche has on sale today.
