Parasect. "Put some legendaries to sleep." Ah yes. This 'mon's weaknesses to Flying, Fire, and Ice are barely a consideration thanks to that blazing fast *checks notes* 30 base speed.

Parasect is a terrible pick. If you want a bulky grass type with access to status,go for vileplume or victreebell (depending on which version you are playing) they are found quite early and vileplume has more bulk and victreebel has more speed. Meanwhile paresect has actrocious speed, mediocre bulk, and 3 4 times weaknesses.

In Blue with Bulbasaur with no trading, I usually do: Venusaur, Pidgeot, Raichu, Kadabra, Gyarados, Machoke. These guys can usually get me through the Pokemon League and Unknown Dungeon to get Mewtwo. I give Cut to a Bellsprout to keep Venusaur's moves natural and flash to a Voltorb for the same reason with Raichu or Kadabra. I swap them in as needed to get through areas and replace them with Machoke. Kadabra is so OP and Gyarados' Bite or Hyper Beam can ward of any opposing psychic types in the game. In Red version with Charmander and no trading, I usually do: Charizard, Pidgeot, Raichu, Kadabra, Gyarados and Vileplume. Basically a similar team except I swap Venusaur for Vileplume and incorporate Charizard into the mix by only using my Machop/Machoke as an HM user and put it away when not going through a dungeon that contains pushable rocks. Likewise to my Blue file I find it better to give my Cut HM to a second Oddish as it is not a very good combat move. If I were to play Blue or Red with Squirtle, Gyarados would be the one who doesn't get in so I can have Blastoise in the lead. Vileplume or Victreebel would be in Venusaur's slot, and Machoke would stay. With the way the Pokemon League is set up, a fire type is not essential as fighting can defeat the ice types and the flying can defeat the grass types. If I choose Charmander, I keep a Butterfree around to beat Brock until I reach Abra.

My last Pokemon Red/Blue team was Blastoise, Exeggutor, Moltres, Rhydon (I wanted Golem, but couldn't trade with anyone), Wigglytuff, and Beedrill. I'm casually shiny hunting Moltres in LeafGreen. That team is Venusaur, Omastar, Farfetch'd (to be replaced with shiny Moltres), Mr. Mime, Primeape, and Persian.

1st gen was relying on speed even more than new generations, so your charizard team has 4 slow pokémon. It wouldn't stand long compared to the venusaur and blastoise teams. I think that you should change 2 pokémon, so if you want a fighting type (not really necessary in first gen anyway) go for hitmonlee which has the best fighting move of the 1st gen and is faster, or primeape. I would have gone for a normal like tauros or an electric type anyway, maybe jolteon. Then for another fast pokémon, I wouldn't change rydon for dugtrio, so you only have grass and water. Grass could be victreebel but I think that is better to stick on exeggutor, so you need to change the water type. Starmie would be great if you want another psychic

You said you guys had competitive and gen 1 knowledge. But there's quite a lot of miss info here tbh 😬 bug doesn't resist Psychic for one thing. Also you used trade evos, Poliwrath would be better then Machamp for the Venasure team, or Starmie instead of Alakazam and then Jynx or something

I thought Bug did do that in Gen 1, but the Bugs generally suck, so it doesn't really matter. I think you're supposed to pick up a Scyther in the Safari Zone and use that against Sabrina, but I have just gone for pure speed and power.

Thank you for the work, everything made perfect sense :) I always try to make the smallest team possible, without a real weakness. I'm shooting for 3 Pokemon, or 4 max. But it is so hard. Last time for Gen 1 I figured out, although being good - Water isn't actually needed, if you go for charizard for example. So I ended up with FIRE/FLying (Charizard) GROUND (Dugtrio) ELECTRO (Raichu/Volteon) That's the minimum, right? I always feel like I'm overlooking something. AND: Your video make me realize one more time - Pokémon is too beatiful to have only 3-4 Pokémons in my team. But I want it to not always be the same Pokémons... so: If i consider this guide and break it down for me, GRASS,FIRE,WATER;ELEKTRO;GROUND(+rock);FIGHTING including a psychic learner or typing combo AND an ICE learner in that team would be the way to go? Greetings and Good TImes, PK

Would’ve swapped Slowbro for Starmie. The speed and coverage moves are great regardless of amnesia. It was my go-to in these games and I barely used anything else. It was just that good. Or switch out both Alakazam and Slowbro for Starmie and Tauros. Tauros with hyper beam and the no recharge glitch made it a powerhouse

My ideal RBG team for Kanto starters. Venusaur: Dodrio, Jolteon, Slowbro, Nidoking, Beedrill (for stab Twin Needle on Sabrina's Alakazam) Charizard: Vaporeon, Jynx, Raichu, Dodrio (because Charizard can only learn Fly in Yellow 😮‍💨), and Dugtrio. Blastoise: Dugtrio, Jolteon, Jynx, Dodrio, Hitmonlee.

Fire is really bad in gen 1 and not needed at all. Flying covers everything Fire does other than Ice, which in turn is covered by Rock. Don't get me wrong, Ninetails is a solid Pokemon and certainly the best Fire type available in gen 1, but it's far from mandatory to have on the team. I'd rather have a strong Flying type like Dodrio over Ninetails, useful in more occasions and also allows you to Fly whenever you want as it's actually a solid move when STAB unlike say Cut which you never want to actually use beyond the mandatory tree cutting. Also since in gen 1 speed affects crit chance I prefer using fast Pokemon in gen 1 to maximize sweeping potential, especially since we're building the team for max coverage and power. So for example I'd actually not use Rhydon because of its speed and instead go for Nidoking, losing the Rock typing which isn't really that important, he can still learn Rock Slide which is the only Rock move you should ever use in gen 1 anyway It just won't be STAB but will still be super effective just the same, and you never want to use Rock moves in gen 1 unless they're super effective anyway as they're awfully inconsistent due to poor accuracy. Alakazam is a no brainer, but also a boring and uninspired choice, especially if you can only get Kadabra due to the trading restriction. Instead I prefer Jynx to also bring STAB Ice to the table which covers some very important types, which help you from start(Grass and Ground) to finish(Flyer, mainly for your rival, and Dragon, also Ground I guess but by that point it's a non issue). As a bonus Jynx is a wild Pokemon, since it was traded(though in-game so everyone can do it) so it earns xp faster. Similarly I'd go with Tauros over Machamp. Again Fighting is just a bad typing, and a powerful fast Normal type is plenty. Similarly for Water, Slowbro, while incredibly powerful, is just so slow. Give me Gyarados instead any day. Again as with Jynx you can trade for it(well a Magikarp, for 500$) to gain the same xp bonus and have access to him very early, even before getting the old rod. A bit of an annoying grind, absolutely, but well worth it. You can keep Ninetails as the 6th Pokemon if you want or go with something like Jolteon or Dodrio instead, or any other fast Pokemon with good stats and a decent type, plenty to choose from. I would have said Haunter/Gengar would be amazing for this team if it wasn't for the fact that I went with Jynx instead of Alakazam, thus without item duplication glitches my only Psychic TM goes to Jynx and without it Haunter/Gengar aren't nearly as good. For Squirtle take the above team, just ditch Gyarados cause you have Blasdoise and take Victreebel instead to replace Venusaur. Similarly for Charmander you ditch Jolteon/Dodrio/etc and keep both Gyarados and Victreebel.

I just did a fire red run on an emulator, with Charizard and I feel my team is better and more accessible to all versions. This that said, the team is charizard, primeape, nidoking, Raichu, kadabra, and Vaporeon. This team pretty much coasted and was attainable rather early. I didn’t grab the grass over lightning for because I used pikachu to get me through cerulean gym. So didn’t feel the need to switch out. Vaporeon with acid armor can sweep most end game stuff as well. Did the first run with all level 50 Pokémon and made it through with a handful of revives and lemonades. Overall vaporeon is the best water type in the game as both raichu and vaporeon swept Lance and rival. Note nidoking ended up being hm slave for the team as primeape did his job better with higher speed and attack stats. Raichu Olin the team vs rival took care of pigeot, Blastoise, and eventually outspeed and kills alakazam, kadabra with calm mind also helped. Overall it was a much more fun way to play without grass. Also my vaporeon has hasty nature so its speed was at 100 at level 50. Kadabra took care of Agatha entire team as well.

Kind of lame, that Venusaur and Charizard got three (50%!!!) of the same team members, while they are completely different things. Also you have Alakazam in every team, kind of boring aswell tbh. I miss Gengar. Alakazam and Machamp only evolve, when you trade them, so it's not that easy anymore, since you are not a child anymore and go to school everyday, where every other kid also has a GameBoy with Pokemon with it. Stupid choices therefor. Many Pokemon here also are only catchable (very) late in the game (that was critical when you excluded legendaries) and you need therefor extra training, which takes pretty long and is boring. When you got the new Pokemon leveled up and ready, you could have finished the game onehundred times already with the ones you had. A good mix would have been, if you say, that you catch a new Pokemon about after every two gyms. Also you didn't include any Pokemon for the HM. I don't know about your criteria, but what you told us you want and what you actually created missed the target, in my opinion. I would say, there are only two ways: Single Player and Multi Player. Those are not Single Player Teams, sorry... I am not such a nerd, that I actually read those stuff, but I test it out. But I would start for example like this: Starter = Water (in the first three generations, this was clearly the best) Flyer = Pigeot (basic, but decent. Not falling off too much in late game, already catchable early, even if it's not useful yet but good to have for the fourth arena) Primeape/Raticate/Nidoqueen/Nidoking is optimal but gives you a high advantage at the start ... After the second arena, you can catch an Abra maybe, but don't have too, if you have already one of the optional ones and therefor three Pokemon. Like this, it can go all the game. And usually it does go always like this. There are not just Late Game Pokemon. It's a Journey and you con't have access to everything, everywhere or at any stage of the game. So consider that as "reality" please.
