Hi there, Liron here! Today we'll learn how to paint an alla-prima watercolor portrait in black & white.
This is from last week's livestream. I wanted to cut out all the fluff and share the process only, with those who haven't watched the stream.
This is a great technique to practice, as it can be applied to just about ANY SUBJECT.
You'll also get to see me struggle with the lips and nose area a bit. The lesson? Don't give up on your painting! Try fixing it until it looks right.
It's almost NEVER too late (:

Paint is “Neutral Black”, by Koh-I-Noor’s Mondeluz.
It's indeed a pre-mixed black I used for this one (In most of my processes I tend to mix my own, but not here).
It’s composed of:
- PR187
- PB15
- PBlack7
I hope you enjoy this one! 😊🙏🏼

Thanks for keeping it real. It was frustrating to you but it’s a relief to many of us to know we have the same struggles 😊

I do remember this portrait very well, it was a while back. I first watched, then painted along with you, then used a photo of mine which you critiqued for me - 'the smoker' It broke the ice for me as regards portrait painting.

Great lesson. I will try this one for myself, as I am very interested in value. Checked my Sonnet set, and the premixed black in it is very similar to the one you used ( same black and blue pigment, the red one is PR 63.1). Should be fun to play with it! Your struggle with the nose/lip part was especially intruiging, there was a point at which I thought it was a totall loss, but you really proved your point to keep at it! Turned out great ("it's a face" is quite an understatement! ). I found the right paper is essential for being able to correct; with the first (cheap non cotton) paper I bought it was impossible, it just fell apart. Spend more on paper now.

This is just what I'm looking for. I love this. Thank you! Can I make a suggestion? You might set your camera focus to manual so it doesn't shift while you're working. You are pretty much stationary. It would be easier on our eyes.

I think the risk you said of making darker between eye and nose made it much more appealing...risk well taken...👌

So the key is doing practice with monochrome watercolor with highlights and shadows.

Thanks for sharing. Help, please. I lost control of my alla prima wash. I painted the dark eyes, eye brows, and shadows first. Then when I made the wash for ligher values, the lighter wash leeched the dark. The result was that the dark bled into the light areas. I should have waited for the dark areas to dry first. That or painted dark areas last, after the light washes dried, I think. I can lift it later after this mess dries and maybe still have a good painting. I'm not able to do it in one go. My goal is to paint live portraits. I want to make the entire portrait in one go, fast fast fast, for a friend who is sitting for me. Nobody likes to or has the time to pose for more than a few minutes. It's easy enough to take their photo with my camera phone and paint from the photo but pffft. Anybody can do that. I'm still basically a beginner at 1 year with no formal training, and maybe the answer is easy for someone with experience, but this is an ongoing problem for me. Anyway, thanks again for the video.

I'm going to try this... thanks for inspiring. However ,I'm usually doing wet on wet mostly...unlike you doing as a continuous wash mostly...I think because I don't have confidence in going so fast joining each section quickly as you. I don't know whether my technique of doing very slowly taking my time is correct way of learning in the long run? I m actually following Louise de masi (check her you tube) slow technique but I understand your teaching so well. I think I'm blending both of you in my technique slow path of hers and knowledge of You. What's your opinion? It would be better if you could watch her one video before answering me please🙏
