You know, incentives for cars, for anything, is tax money sucked from every person in the nation and distributed to a few not in need.
@Joedisney
@Joedisney Месяц назад
You're absolutely right about your tax money being sucked up. the difference is, at least we get something in return. Otherwise they just bail out more banks, and start more wars. With the subsidies, we get clean air, a path to make electric vehicles practical, right now they're just not. And as much as everyone loves Elon musk, most people I know who brought Tesla's are fed up with it. In the Chicago area they just don't work in the cold weather. And the people that have bought them, most mostly have garages, they can actually charge them. We're running out of those people, that have garages and want an electric car. The subsidies, are going to allow the electric car companies to come up with a car that actually works in the winter time, charges within 5 minutes or some variation that makes them worthwhile. There's a reason why so many people are against electric cars, they're just not practical as of now. I'll be the first to say they have a lot of advantages, speed, clean air, smoothness etc. Rest assured, the Chinese are subsidizing and they are innovating faster than Tesla. Tesla was ahead of them two years ago, they've now passed Tesla. They didn't do this for the free market, they did this from subsidies from the Chinese government

I have to push back on your thesis here SMR. Tesla does “NOT” make an “affordable” car for the masses. “The masses” are driving used vehicles. Long term, a Tesla is certainly on- par/ better than an ICE vehicle. However, it’s like trying to buy a house in this current market. It’s the “UPFRONT” money that makes it so difficult (Tesla/ house). An average interest rate on a car loan with average credit is around 8%- 10%. On $30k- $40k??? Can’t make that claim until Model 2…/ Robotaxis

@Rommelgaleman
@Rommelgaleman Месяц назад
It is merely a troll. Anyone with basic common sense can see that it's not a car company, so all the comments about GM and Ford are irrelevant. Tesla's mission is not to compete against other EV makers. Although EV sales are currently its primary source of funding to accelerate the mission, energy storage deployment, and energy arbitration are increasingly becoming key parts of that revenue. Overall, Tesla's mission is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, and that includes more than just EVs or energy storage deployment.

Something that shouldn't be glossed over is that over 50% of vehicles sold in China were EV, but that also is supported by massive subsidies. The goal of Elon (while I understand his position) isn't to have Tesla be a successful business, it's to accelerate the world to sustainable energy, and subsidies help with that. Why doesn't he constantly harp on subsidies to the oil industry? He obviously isn't afraid of making enemies. 1. The Paris Agreement (and every summit that went before it) has - in reality - achieved nothing. These sorts of initiatives are little more than "hot air" (pardon the pun), and are opportunities for political leaders to give the appearance that they care about something. It's theatre... and is never going to result in lowering carbon emissions. 2. I agree that Trump pulling out of the Accord was a bad political move... The USA has more meaningful influence by being part of these initiatives, even though (as I say) these initiatives are almost 100% ineffective. 3. As the relationship between Trump and Musk develops (and remember - it's 8 years since Elon served on Trump's ill-fated industrial forum), I believe Musk will have significant influence on the Trump administration's policies on economics, business development, employment and environmental awareness. Elon is significantly more powerful today than he was 8 years ago. Trump will be more inclined to listen to Musk, and we may see some surprising u-turns compared to Trump's initial presidency.

In spite of what Steven thinks, subsidies and other incentives are a powerful weapon if you want to steer your industry into a certain direction. Exactly China is the proof of that. The green industry there didn't arise out of nowhere. China has been subsidizing and incentivizing it on a massive scale for years. This industrial policy has resulted in them being the world leader in solar, batteries and EV's. If it wasn't for Tesla, they would dominate the entire new energy industry sector. But Tesla is an anomaly and not something you can rely on to base your policies on.

The author of this video has it exactly backwards. The subsidies make the EV pie bigger. If you shrink the pie( this is exactly what Will happen )when the subsidies disappear. You're still going to have Ford and GM trying to get a piece of that pie. Unfortunately that pie is going to be smaller as The subsidies shrink or disappear. This is going to hurt Tesla more than Ford and GM, why??? Ford in GM have a small portion of the profits coming from the electric vehicles. Tesla has a 100% of their profit coming from electric vehicles. Shrinking the subsidies will help Ford in GM, more so Toyota and Honda the ones that are really killing it in the industry. Don't forget Tesla stock, it has a hundred plus PE ratio. That means in order to keep this stock even close to this price, the EV pie has to grow extremely fast. And Tesla must be getting most of the pie. Even if, Tesla is not a car company as most people want to believe. One thing is 100% a fact, Tesla is financed by its auto side. It cannot produce, new AI products unless somebody's financing it, and as of now it's finance through Auto sales

The example of the Internet fails to recognize that from the early days of e-commerce from 1992 until 2018, internet sales were mostly tax-free for about 26 years. That gave a severe advantage to companies like Amazon over their land based competitors of Wal-Mart etc. If that advantage hadn't existed, it is quite possible that e-commerce likely could have taken way longer. Similarly, Tesla was struggling during the Model 3 "Production Hell" and might not have made if it weren't for the existing subsidies. Likewise, China is providing massive subsidies to their EVs to undercut US companies, as well as making it very hard on US companies to compete in China. Yes, the US legacy automakers are "MOrOns" in their choices to not get with EVs sooner, but the US politicians choosing to attempt to keep things even with China sees well founded until China quits subsidizing as well. Subsidies should not become permanent. But they definitely serve their purpose to get society to shift away from the status quo.

@AllanSustainabilityFan
@AllanSustainabilityFan Месяц назад
The legacies cut production because the macro economic conditions are bad, not even incentives can help push EVs when consumers, with concerns about job prospects and record inflation, can't afford the interest rates on their loans. Even Tesla slowed its own production down due to these market conditions - yet they also noticed an impressive jump in sales when they briefly offered promotional %0 APR rates, further highlighting the root of the problem. Not crazy about Elon's political posturing, but in terms of rebates, yes Tesla benefited, but Tesla didn't need them, the legacies are the ones pushing for them, and originally they even tried to exclude Tesla from it with a UAW poison pill. I'm talking specifically on the EV rebate, the other aspects of the bill that promoted local battery refining/production may be useful, as we are woefully behind China on localizing these crucial areas of expertise.
@tomdrewenskus8167
@tomdrewenskus8167 Месяц назад
Uh, legacy auto didn’t cut EV production in half because macro economic conditions are bad. It’s because they have not built compelling first generation EVs that anyone wants, and production costs are too high due to not increasing production enough (~500k units) to gain economies of scale to reduce costs, and they have not figured out how to inexpensively manufacture any EVs profitably. So, they are just cutting their losses in half. Tesla will still produce more EVs this year than last.

@@tomdrewenskus8167 That's certainly another factor, true. Allot of the legacy's offerings were/are not as competitive.
