The Best Tick Prevention
Caution: This is just what I do, if you choose to do this, I am not responsible for any adverse reactions. For me the risk of doing this is better than the risk of disease from the ticks I encounter in the backcountry.
Lots of people have different things they do. I have had hundreds of ticks on me in previous videos and on many trips. I'm sick of them and ready to find the best treatment. This is it!
While DEET is effective, it also will ruin clothing and gear, there is a better choice out there. I use Permethrin and Picardin as a 2 stage process to protect myself from ticks.

Good info Mark. Been treating my gear for years with it and have only had one of the little buggers attached to me. Just a reminder, if you hike with a four legged friend, have them the proper precautions as well. Hike on.

Works well when you do it often and have a lot of clothing/gear to spray down!
@rossseymour5223

Be careful as some solutions are not 36% but 10%. The Martins brand that I get off Amazon is 10%. This require the addition of about 6 ounces per gallon. See Section Hiker site for a good explanation how to use this 10% solution. Also, I tried the spray method for years but have turned to soaking in a tub. Seems to get the clothes more evenly treated. I felt that some of the spray missed the clothing and I ended up using not that much more for soaking. Since ticks go on top and under clothing, getting both sides with a soak seems more effective.

True, best to do some research into what you're using and weigh the cost/benefit of it for yourself!
@michaelmarziotto8105

That's the same process I use with the Martin's concentrate, except I do a dunk with everything by my hammock.. that gets sprayed with standard sawyer. Also use the Picaridin cream, and carry a small sampling of spray in my fanny pack. I do treat my underwear.. which are actually 3/4 length runners compression leggings, so in the event something DOES get up under my pant legs, it can't get up into my groin. Leggings also give my some level of leg protection if I opt for shorts. Picaridin on my calves since they are the only exposed skin. Last trip out I spotted two ticks crawling on my pant leg.. and in a flash.. they were gone. Whether they died or just decided to bail, I don't know...
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 5 лет назад
Good stuff! Happy to hear they just jumped ship! I have opted to only hike in pants this year to try to minimize ticks having any access to my skin without having to endure the permethrin treated clothing.

QUESTION: I can't see the bottle good of what the one you're using is called. There are so many, but I'm not finding one for ticks... mostly for termites. What is the name of the one you're using?

I have a number of cats, I treat my sleeping gear with a light spritz of permethrin and spray down my tent and clothes. I then store it in my garage where the cats do not go. For the quilts and sleeping bag, by light spritz I am using the spritz bottle from Sawyer and just lightly spray, enough to mist coat the exterior of the quilt and sleeping bag. Not everyone dies this, but I like the extra protection. Good idea not to spray down the underwear. While I have heard that permethrin is broken down by body oils, I am not really keen on having harsh chemicals near that part of my body. I have not used DEET in years, Picardin is what I use as well. I tell the scouts in my troop to not use DEET, but there is always an exception.

Protect yourself! Both my wife and daughter were bitten and are now alergic to mammal meat. But it is even worse, because it is amazing how many products mammal protein shows up in. It ranges from various mixes, marshmallows, medicines (gelcaps in some cases), etc. Another case, you might try to avoid meat using a vegetarian sausage and find the casing has meat protein in it. You are down to inspecting labels of many of the everyday products you use. Sensitivity varies from minor nuisance to deadly serious. Some people lose their sensitivity, but very often it's permanent.

From what I've read, once it's dry, it's safe. However, use caution and your own research to determine what is best for you. For me this is a better option than dealing with the risks of ticks.

For what its worth, permethrin is the active ingredient in headlice cream that has been used on children for decades. Not only that but at double the concentration level at 1% that is applied directly to kids heads. If you get a little on your skin its harmless, just probably dont want to douse yourself.

Wayne Helser According to Sawyer and the research I have seen, once it dries it is bonded and sweating or crossing a stream does not release it.

I spray all - repeat all - clothing.from tip of toe to top of my head. All clothing, inside and out. Also sleeping bag inside and out. Plus screens of tent, inside tent corners, and ceiling of tent. This gets ticks and all other bugs. Other guys on our canoe trips have ticks, 3 had Lyme disease. I have had no - repeat no - ticks. I prefer to over prepare, rather than suffer the consequences of having “prepared only just enough”. I prefer to waste some time and permethrin, than to have a single tick bite. Just me. See, it takes only one bite to infect you. If it’s the wrong tick - just that one bite. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

It is not harmful when dried? Meaning it is somewhat? can be? likely? be harmful in wet form? My question is... Say clothing is treated and well dried. What happens when your clothing become moist and or wet from rain? How does it affect human at that condition? This is what I would like to know the most.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 5 лет назад
The general information out there, and you can watch some videos on the Sawyer website, is that once it's dried it is bonded to the clothing and is no longer harmful. Having said that, I recommend everyone do their own research and decide for themselves if this is a treatment option you want to use. For me the risk of the ticks is greater than the risk posed by the treatment.

Permethrin is almost insoluble in water. It has a low mammalian toxicity and is poorly absorbed by skin (see npic.orst.edu/factsheets/archive/Permtech.html) NPIC provides objective, science-based information about pesticides and pesticide-related topics to enable people to make informed decisions about pesticides and their use. NPIC is a cooperative agreement between Oregon State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

There is a video saying the 36 is which is sfr ( oil based)is stronger but the comments concensus stated that it is bad for us and not meant for human use. However it's more effective than water after 1st wash. I'll pm you the link on fb. I am a novice but have been researching for months. I just used the sawyer sprays for now but want to mix concentrate.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 5 лет назад
The Sawyer is also oil based, and the percentage of that is 1%, however when you dilute the 36, the percentage of oil products is less than 1%. I am not saying one is better than the other, but like you, I do hope that everyone will do their own research and decide which is right for them. Thanks!!!

Instead of listing links to your T-shirt swag and no fan base if sweatshirt buyers “seriously really?” List a link to the parmathin concentrate bottle you show in the video. All the eye candy music and intros mean little to the viewer if anything they make you look like you are trying to hard to be that typical flashy RU-vidr no one really subs. So next time place a link to the product you demonstrate in your videos over selling T-shirt crap that no one wants in your discretion.

If you watch many of my videos, you know I normally do provide links to the products. However, on this one, there is a certain amount of concern and controversy around the concentrated version of permethrin. I would rather allow people to understand what I'm doing, and then take the time to do their own research into what will work best for them, and what they will be most comfortable using. I get it that you don't like t-shirt crap, but some people do want them and do buy them, and it has kept me from needing to ask for donations, or setting up a Patreon site like so many others. At least with the t-shirt or sweatshirt or coffee mug, you're getting something while helping the channel.
