Hey guys, in this video, I talk about some of the best domestic economy travel credit cards that normal people can get a lot of value from. On RU-vid, we're constantly talking about credit card point redemptions for luxury trips to places like the Maldives or Bora Bora, but I think we forget that the majority of people out there physically can't take trips like that due to life circumstances even if they have the points to do so. So in this video, I wanted to share the best cards for the everyday person who wants to travel for free with credit cards. We'll talk about luxury travel credit cards, mid-tier travel credit cards, and hotel/airline credit cards for those of us who frequently travel domestically while answering the question "What are the best credit cards for domestic economy travel?". I hope you enjoy it!

You have an excellent point, that's why I liked Spencer opening statement. To me, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the perfect card for my current situation. I don’t really care for the lounge access because I almost always have less than 1 hour for a layover so I don’t have time for lounges! But I still get those transfer partners, and I just booked my first travel through the travel portal! Great video Spencer.

Great analysis here Spencer! For domestic travel for the everyday person, I would emphasize airline-specific credit cards. Although they may not earn as much as the flexible point earning cards (CSP/Amex Plat/etc), these airline cards also get you intangible perks like priority boarding, passes to airline-specific lounges, and/or airline discounts. For the everyday traveler, they may not fly enough to reach status with an airline, and these mid-tier airlines cards are a sweet-spot to get these travelers these perks for around $95 making it well worth it considering the continually increasing airline fees!

Great to see the CSR getting some love! Harder to get positive value from than the VX for sure, but it’s a workhorse card. That 1.5cpp is really solid and probably the best you could hope for on domestic airlines. I’d also add it’s great for a city dweller (Chicago, NYC…) as travel includes transit. The Lyft pink membership also includes free access to the city bikes which is pretty neat little perk! Great video Spencer!

Super comprehensive video Spencer! You're right about the Venture X not having the best redemption options. Having a 1.25x or 1.5x bonus on portal redemptions would be great. The Reserve is certainly a nice travel card and seems very simple to get positive value from. Great vid!

Although I personally rank the CSR lower, I can definitely see the ease-of-use usecase for more casual and domestic travellers! Have you noticed that flights and hotels on the individual travel portal are very different than direct? Personally 90% of the time things are just as much if not cheaper in some cases! And in those scenarios, the Venture X really puts up a fight! Awesome breakdown as always Spencer!
@krs1905
@krs1905 Год назад
I think the CSR and Amex Plat have some glaring flaws in their designs, whereas the V1 isn’t as powerful in some areas as a other premium travel card but it’s well rounded in its overall design. The CSR and Platinum needs to be in a setup (possibly more AF) and the V1 can stand on its own as a travel AND everyday card.
@KevinYang
@KevinYang Год назад
@@krs1905 That's a great point. I personally combine the CSP + VentureX (and Plat) given the CSP still gives me the ability to transfer those valuable Chase points!

@@KevinYang I have the CSP too, but just for their recent SUB of 80k. I think about downgrading it next year. I have the Chase Ink Preferred for transferring and they offer 3x on internet, phone, and cable - which I pay about $500 a month for from all of my plans (18k UR Points). I have the VX and I’m hoping to product change one of my QS to a SavorOne card before my Amex Gold Card comes due next year for its AF.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Год назад
For all of the credit cards out there, I wouldn’t rank it as high. However, for domestic travel I’d still rank it at #1 personally. And yeah I think that a lot of us can get value from other cards because we really know how the travel game works, but for the everyday person who wants to use one card and a travel portal, the CSR is really solid! Thanks for your insight Kevin!!

I have the Charles Schwab Platinum and it works great for me. Unlike the CSR etc, if you don't travel a lot it's not the card for you. I get almost $1,200 in value from that card every year so it more than pays for itself. JFK being my home airport, I never have a problem when I travel going to the Centurion Lounge at 15,000 sq ft. Great video spencer. Could you consider a guide to hotel status video? I too love Hyatt, but considering globalist is so difficult to achieve, and Hilton diamond is easy with the Aspire, I’m having a hard time justifying hyatt over staying at Hilton for every trip. Despite Hyatts being great and them being chase’s best Transfer Partner, it actually almost always makes more sense to stay at Hilton’s so long as you’re a diamond member. Not to mention Hilton’s points are easy to earn and churn as you mentioned

The TPG estimates for Airline CPP values never seem to add up for economy travel, could you do a video on how you value those points for economy between the big airline brands or link one if you’ve already touched on it? Thank you so much!

Hey Ethan! I’m really glad to hear you found my channel and I’m happy to have you here! I haven’t personally made a video about that yet or know of anyone that has but that’s not a bad idea! I know he likely estimates their cpp value including international redemptions to a degree, but honestly the cpp value he lists for most of the big airlines is pretty accurate based on the value I’ve gotten. At least that’s the case for SW who I fly most frequently domestically. I guess the only way to really know for yourself would be to calculate it based on the routes you’re taking and compare those cpp value among the top airlines, but for a general value I’d still refer to TPG personally. I can look into it more though!

My two favorite premium travel cards are the Capital One Venture X and the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve and some day, I would like to hold one or both of them. Before I get a premium travel card, I do plan to get the CSP. Depending on whether or not Citi improves the Premier card, I may consider getting it. As for hotel cards, just about any one of them that offers an annual free night certificate is worth it. My favorite hotel chain is Hilton and some day, I would like to have the Aspire card. However, if you're well under 5/24 and can add a couple more cards before you go over, you could definitely add the Bilt or the Custom Cash right now. Its nothing fancy, but here's my credit card plan for at least the next 3-5 years. I currently have the Chase Freedom Unlimited, Amex Blue Cash Preferred, the Costco Visa Card and I just got the Capital One Venture X for an upcoming trip that I am putting my spend on to get the SUB. I was going to apply for the Chase Sappire Preferred this holiday season and then get the BILT Mastercard sometime early next year and then end 2024 off with the Amex Gold as I will be moving and can use the Gold card for meeting the minimum spend. I probably will cancel my Amex BCP right after I apply for the Gold since I don't need both cards. Realistically, after I get the Gold card, I might not need to look for a card for a while unless I see a killer sign up bonus or see my travel plans change. I think those 6 cards by the end of 2024 (Amex Gold, C1VX, CFU, CSP, BILT, and Costco) will cover me fine for all my spend categories for the foreseeable future, especially since I am single and not a huge spender. But otherwise, I think it will cover all my travel expenses and experiences too

In my humble opinion, the overcrowding in lounges is across the board depending on the airport. If you’re flying in and out of JFK, SFO, or LAX - Centurion lounges are always busy. However, I just in Vegas and it was rather calm for a Friday evening. Same with Delta Skyclubs, expect any of their major hubs to be busy 7 days a week (especially ATL). Any of the so called “premium” lounges are going to attract more people. I do see Amex upping the fee on the Platinum at some point though to try and make it more exclusive….

I have Chase Sapphire Reserve for more than 4 years (actually upgraded from preferred which I got on 2016), very happy with it. I have saved my points enough for whole trip in one free trip with economy from EWR - BKK for United via chase ultimate portal and one recent trip on business class on Singapore airline round trip from JFK-BKK with transfer partner option. I preferred to use transfer partner as the reason you have mentioned, getting better status and easier to modify the trip as changing the flight, which I can contact airline directly. Actually I have Amex platinum by becoming additional user on my brother’s card so I can use Centurion lounge without spend full annual fee. But from my experience with Centurion lounge in Las Vegas on 4th of July, I think it’s quite overrated even i didn’t have hard time to get there.

The Sapphire Preferred is a great starter card and it's $45 after credits (although Chase's Portal sometimes prices poorly relative to other platforms). The real value after the bonus is the 25% additional redemption value, which also boosts your other Chase cards. The primary insurance coverage on car rentals is a big plus too. I was very, very lucky to get the 100K opening bonus last year, plus I got the $95 annual fee waived in year one. The Southwest Priority Credit Card is also a steal of a card. While the annual fee is $149, you get a $75 credit for any SW purchase, including flights each year, plus 5K in points on Southwest Rewards (calculating to another $75K), and four priority boardings. You can't beat that card if you're a SW flier.

I am trying to learn more about the travel cards in general and one thing that I am struggling is with Chase CSR and CSP. Because majority of my purchases are either grocery, gas, Costco purchases, or other random uncategorized spending, this card is effectively 1% cashback card. Putting all the other benefits aside for the moment, even with %50 or %25 bonus for redeeming these points, I feel like someone is on a loosing end with it. Wouldn't using a flat 2% cash back net overall a more positive cash back, give more flexibly to book whatever flight without any limits, out pacing the 25/50% bonus for spending on Chase travel portal, which probably might have inflated prices to begin with? am I missing something here? I get that sign up bonus is nice, but besides that, I am not impressed and I am confused.

You’re thinking isn’t incorrect but there’s a little bit more to it. The 1:1 transfer doesn’t necessarily directly translate to the value you’ll get from your points. For example, you may get a $500 flight covered with 50,000 points in the portal, but if you transfer those points out to an airline at a 1:1 rate instead who would only charge you 25k points for the same flight on their website instead, you just got double the value from your points by transferring out instead. it would be really awesome to compare the United Explorer Credit Card vs Chase Sapphire Preferred. They are both of Chase for 95$ per year
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Год назад
Personally I think the CSP would win that one really easily. Mainly because it earns Chase UR points instead of just United points and it covers more categories. Chase points can be transferred to United through the CSP, but they can also be transferred to many other airlines and hotels too which make them a very powerful point system compared to United where you're locked down to just one type of points. Also with United's devaluations recently, the CSP would be a much safer hedge against that since you can transfer to other airlines instead if you'd like to. Hopefully that gives you a quick understanding of my opinion between the two!

As someone who owned both, and now only US Bank Reserve for 2 reasons, one the digital wallet of 3% all which in fact that 4.5%, only if you redeem it to travel expenses than you can cancel it within 24 hours, the bank will get you back 4.5% cash back as statement credit, also Chase lowered their 50% which in fact that it was 33.33% not a booster of 50% just 50% more value to your points which mean, if you have $100 transaction will be redeemed by 6667 Chase points, but since the beginning of this year Chase lost many of the benefits of 33.33% for restaurants and travels to gas and grocery stores which many cards cover these topics IMO, and lowering the value of redeeming to 1/2 of 33.33%.
