Watching your videos is getting expensive. I've bought a ZV E10, Sigma 16 f1.4, a full cage and accessories for it, a Weebill 3E, and today i placed an order for a bunch of F38 mounts.. All after watching your videos. So if my wife asks about the bills... I'm telling her it's your fault.
That super universal quick release plate seems like the real gamechanger. I hope they make that more available as a standalone to add on to other products. I'm all F38 over here as well though!

Nice review, thanks. What would be the best video ballhead to add to the TreeRoot?
Love your video, I'm just not shure what to get. If you could choose between the f38 for 230€ or the treeroot for 400€ what would you recommend? I am a beginner photographer/videographer and in need if a good tripod. Also any recommendations for a good fluid head to pair to the tripod preferably nothing too expensive max. 130€. I will be shooting on aps-c sytems so the weight won't be too high. Edit: I just noticed, the tri pods prices are pre tax. (FYI)
Love the video - one suggestion - instead of saying "this here" when you are talking about one of the tripods, say its name. We can't see the labels, and youtube doesn't give a closed caption of the name. So its harder than it should be for the view to follow along.
The more tripods I use it just seems you cant fight physics and a heavier tripod is always gonna be more sturdy, you really have to decide how much weight you want to carry(also depends on the photography/videography your doing as well). I currently have the Heipi 3-in-1 Travel Tripod, its decently sturdy buts its very light but for what I like to do its not heavy/sturdy enough. I also gotta say its center column system is terrible if you get any sand in it and the collar to extent the center column sucks, constantly wants to cross thread. I don't recommend it, especially for the price.
Thanks Mark for this video and your HONESTY when disclosing you got this tripod for free. What puzzles me is you don''t mention any DISADVANTAGES of this tool. In reality, nothing is perfect. My 2 reservations about this tripod is its payload of ONLY 5kg /11lbs when using with Ulanzi ball head as stated on their website. Therefore, it will be tough for me to use a super telephoto lens with this such as Sigma 60-600mm f4.5-6.3. The lens itself weights 2.5kg/5.5lbs! If I don't use the Ulanzi ball head, the payload will be 10kg/22lbs. The other resevation is the twist lock disadvantage. A couple of other RU-vid reviewers state that flip locks are better because when they get loose, they can be tightened using a screw driver. On the other hand, when the twist locks get loose, you can't fix it by yourself and the tripod can't properly support your camera any more.
Only the ball head load is rated as 5kg. The tripod column when full extended can take 10 kg (if you’re weighing it down) and 20kg not extended. But when it comes to the load capacity of the ball head being 5kg - the 60-600 is about as big of a lens as you can get and you’ll still have 2.5kg left for a camera. A big Canon R3 is only 1.1 kg, so you could still load up a cage and a mic and more with that sigma 60-600. Pretty reasonable amount of weight. In regards to the twist locks, many pros prefer twist locks because they are sturdier and can be removed to be cleaned. You often can not take apart flip locks. Some tripods that cost thousands of dollars use twist locks. Crazy expensive Gitzo tripods use twist locks. The best of the best. RU-vidrs saying flip locks are better are misinformed. It depends on the quality of lock. Ulanzi also guarantees the product. But I’m glad you brought these things up as it’s something I think the would help the audience in my future tripod vids. I think the disadvantages of this tripod come down to there being other lighter and smaller options for travel tripods and it’s more expensive than some other travel tripods. I mentioned these things.
Checking on the TreeRoot head compatibility with the Peak Design Proplate Manfrotto RC2 + Arca-Type Compatible Quick Release Plate. I started with the very first release of the Coleman and Ulanzi travel tripod that didn't have the quick release option available. After a recent trip where my camera, with the previously mentioned Peak Design quick release plate fitted, fell of the Coleman & Ulanzi tripod twice I decided to order the updated Ulanzi head with the quick release head. Turns out, that updated Ulanzi quick release head does not accept any of my AcraSwiss type plates. So, I'm thinking maybe it is upgrade time, but, I need to know if the Peak Design Manfrotto RC2 + Acra type quick release plates will fit on the new TreeRoot. Bonus if you happen to have the Peak Design Micro Anchor tab attached to the quick release plates for testing fitment - as they can make fitting the camera to any AcraSwiss mount that bit more difficult. (The reason for using this particular quick release plate is that it is the only one I have found that supports both AcraSwiss and Manfrotto RC2. My favourite head is the Manfrotto pistol grip, and that works great as an RC2 head, but, my travel tripods are mostly ArcaSwiss mounts. So, having the quick release plate that fits both mounts is really helpful for me). Thanks,
We use several PD tripods. Have also tried Ulanzi tripods. No matter how awesome the Ulanzi is, when an issue comes up with our PD tripods. All we have to do is let PD customer service know and we get a new or similar tripod. With Ulanzi, you do not get that kind of customer service. So at $400, you'll be spending the same everytime the tripod breaks. With the PD tripod, it's a lifetime warranty. Ulanzi just give you 1 year.
What if I don't care about the F38 or F22 systems? What if I prefer the Peak Design Capture Clip? What if I follow Hudon Henry's great recommendation the featherlight Leofoto LS-255CEX with an Acratech ballhead? This combination seems to be even sturdier than this Ulanzi Falcam F38 TreeRoot. I don't like this center column at all! I also wonder why those titles must be click biting? There might be the best travel tripod for your needs but that's perhaps not the same perfect travel tripod for my needs! 🤔
My biggest regret with this one is that it seems bigger when closed. My F38 Tripod is already maxing out my backpack (LTT) . So this one wouldn't fit. If they made a slightly smaller one I think I would buy it
Fantastic tripod I'd never buy because it's got twist locks, chuck it in the bin, Ulanzi if you're watching please make that tripod with regular locks and ill buy it
some gitzo tripods that cost thousands of dollars have twist locks because they can be removed for cleaning. The regular Ulanzi Zero f38 tripod uses flip locks
Peak Design has been hinting at a refresh for their tripod, it's painful that I'm gonna have to wait for it to compare... The biggest drawback for the Ulanzis in my opinion is the folded height and girth. That and if this Treeroot thingy had had lever locks or a lever variant for faster setup I would almost be convinced to get it for a bit of heavier duty convenience...
Looks like the perfect tripod to me! Someone put a lot of thought into getting it right will all the features you need. Especially love the removable centre column
Mark, you got me in GAS mode for real, dude! lol...This is the second time this week I've bought something off your affiliate link. I'm going to get in trouble if I keep this up! lol....Thanks, Bro! Peace!
I can’t see a way to attach it may be able to attach to the centre column you can buy for zero y. the centre column for the treeroot will not fit the zero y
Have been in the market for a travel tripod for a long time...still haven't found one that comes close to me leaving my old Gitzo 2540 behind. Any tripod that cannot easily accept Arca Swiss is a definite non-starter for me, I just have too many A-S mounts to buy into a proprietary system. I realize some of these can also adapt to Peak Design plates, but I have no desire for a PD tripod either. So its 'keep looking' for me.
Take a look at the Unazi Zero Y. Amazingly compact and light and accepts arca swiss plates easily ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cnyaMmU-oVQ.html
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks...I'll give it a look. Each of my cameras are fitted with an A-S L-bracket...some purchased, some home-made, not to mention lens plates.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis When I clicked on your affiliate Amazon link, yesterday, it was unavailable. Tried it just now and there's one left in stock.
Arca swiss with an L Bracket sits on my Gitzo 3530 LS. Nope no more money is being spent on this setup. Way too much invested in support as it is. The Gitzo doesn't fly well though. Can't bring it in the overhead.
Very nice product, seems a bit overpriced at that full retail price especially when you showed us the price of the other 2 on your bench. But it also does seem like it could be just what someone wants and needs. Nice product for sure. Cheers
I'm with you on the Zero tripod being my main travel tripod. I hike and so I need my tripod to be as light as possible. Though if Ulanzi releases a new F-38 universal head for the zero like the one on this new tripod, I would buy it.
This looks very good, especially at their introductory price. Would their TT37 mini leveling base be suitable to use with this? They don't seem to be bothered about making them.
true about Falcom system. I've got F50, F38, F22...all of them...which helps me easily switch among them while I'm at work...fantastic...also for my clients...
I Have just taken delivery of one of these, only took four days to arrive in UK. Fantastic top quality item, very, very well made, I'm surprised it dosent have NASA on the side of it! It's much more solid & heavier than I thought it would be but to be honest I'm going to be mounting a Nikon Z8 on it outdoors so the last thing I want is for it to blow over. Honestly you get what you pay for, this is a PREMIUM-top of the range-product with a price to match but in reality is worth every penny and some...
It's looking like a thing of beauty Mark, and another great video. My little Sirui Traveler 5C is still the perfect size and weight for my travels, and the current camera/lenses. I use the lever arca swiss receivers on everything here at the home studio, and I'm cool slowing down on the travels lol. I might go F38 sometime though👀.
The PeakDesign is NOT only compatible with the backpack clip. It is Arca compatible. All you have to do is remove the two screws sticking out of the top. The DJI gimbal plates fit in perfectly as with my Smallrig Arca base plate on my A7rV.
I was referring to the peak design quick release system being limited to the backpack clip and the tripod. The tripod can definitely take many arca Swiss compatible plates including l brackets and some cages. maybe the way I said it could have been better.
Thanks Mark, great review. It helped me decide to pick one up, loving it so far. Only thing I can't seem to figure out is how to disassemble for cleaning. Do you know anything about that? Cheers.
Peak Design is clearly smaller, important for me if I carry it in a small daypack or easily put it in an airline overhead compatible roller bag. I stopped using center columns (including my Peak Design) since even “sturdy” columns are vibration prone compared to no column. I also own a carbon fiber Peak Design, a couple tripod options for very low work, and a Leofoto 284CEX with a leveling head, very useful for quick head leveling without fussing with legs and plenty tall for me since I am just 5’8”. Anyway, interesting, unique design ideas. Kinda copied PD with the triangular leg profile.
peak design packs up shorty than both the f38 tripods in this video. it’s heavier he thicker than the Ulanzi f38, but the Peak is smaller in every way compared to this new TreeRoot. Peak were definitely the innovator in the space and I’d love to see an update to the original tripod.
If possible, can you maybe add the Heipi 3-in-one tripod into the comparison? I've heard a lot of good reviews about it and it seems almost, if not on par, with the FALCAM Treeroot tripod.
How did you manage to overlook the Freewell Tripod? Although it may not be the sturdiest option, I consider it the ultimate travel tripod. Weighing just 900 grams, I haven't found any tripod on the market that surpasses its head features at that weight.
I have the Peak design Tripod it's quick release is definitely NOT only compatible with the backpack clip. It works with any Arca Swiss plate, cage, or lens foot
yes, I should have clarified that - I meant that peak design only have a backpack clip and tripod in their quick release system. the tripod does take other Arca Swiss plates.
Taking a long road trip in 2025 in the Jeep/Airstream combo. This trip is lots of camping, Jeep off-roading, nature photography/video, & vlogging. I use Falcam on everything, so that’s a no brainer for me. Of these two Falcam tripods, which is the better option in your opinion?
I prefer carrying the Zero F38 for sure - smaller, lighter, still sturdy. But the Treeroot is really rugged and solid. For a big adventure like that, it might be worth the extra weight.
The original Ulanzi tripod was unusable since it had HUGE amounts of play in the center column. I’ve even added 3 thousands of an inch shims to snug up where it clamps down and it wasn’t enough. It would cause issues where if I were to change the shutter speed, it would shift the position of the camera. So using a remote would not solve the issue. My work requires photoshopping multiple exposures together. I really hope they took this new iteration more seriously and removed all play within the center collumn. I would love to use this for my professional photography since I travel to multiple locations and average 30 - 40 flights of stairs a day.
This is really solid with no play when tightened. It's actually not from Ulanzi but Falcam, who designed the entire tripod. They do see in the Ulanzi store though.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Nice, thanks for elaborating! I use Falcam mounts for everything! The only thing they’re missing are anti twist/NATO screws for their F38 like they have on their F22 QRs. And a F22 - V Mount would be amazing.
WOW thanks for introducing us ;) in all seriousness though we all as consumers should not accept anything other than pure perfection products rather than half assed products with proprietary crap that waste money and time and resources! be very critical and hard on companies to inspire only the best to produce stuff! (EDIT) you sound a bit bias about the sturdiness of it plus the twist lock if you ask anyone it is less reliable than the flip locks... plus its not a superior desing since i have to twist each leg 3-5 times to get a desired hight instead of 1 per leg or hopfully just 1 per the whole thing!
Most of the Premium tripods from Gitzo and other brands that cost thousands of dollars are twist locks because they are studier. They distribute the weight better.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis twist locks are inferior unless it is reliable and only one per leg. i dont care if king of the world recommends or makes them they are inferior because slower.
I don't understand if "travel" tripods are designed for instances where you are literally traveling (meaning there are serious trade offs made in favor of portability) or are they good enough for any time you're filming outside a studio? I carry a manfrotto video tripod to church every Sunday to film for social clips. It's large and in charge with a smooth fluid head and has a carrying bag. I am generally filming at or near 180mm and tracking a moving subject (I do have image stabilization to assist). Are these premium travel tripods competitive with full size tripods?
A video tripod with a fluid head meant for big cameras and cinemas cameras are a bit of a different animal. But this travel tripod here is perfect in pretty much and situation with a regular mirrorless camera where you aren’t trying to use video features like live panning and tilting. I own some heavy duty fluid head tripods for big video shoots, but I only use travel tripods otherwise for both travelling and in the studio because they are smaller, and lighter and plenty sturdy.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to take my camera off my gimbal, unscrew the plate, put my base plate for my tripod just to get a shot.
Mine just came in the mail yesterday! Question, is there an accessory or way to pan the camera when shooting video? I didn’t realize this was just for photography. No big deal as the tripod still really cool!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis had a great catch-up with Mark Weimels in Melbourne this week. Love the reviews, love the kit and love the community. Thanks for making the internet a better place :)
I had bad experience with F38 plates becoming loose with less than 4mths of usage, right now I am only using them with Arca-Swiss plates with screw locks. I wouldn't buy any tripod heads with the F38 anymore. Sharing this and hoping it is useful for someone.
loose how? I’m assuming you tighten your base plates in your camera every so often and normal use will loosen baseplates over time. So I’m unsure what you mean by loose. do you mean the ball head itself?
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis it seems even with just a bit of wear on the F38 camera-plate, once it clips onto the base plate, it will not be tight. So the camera-plate + camera will shift around on the tripod or even worse on the gimbal... rendering quite a few of my shots unusable.
I will probably make YT video about it someday... Lol.. Granted, this version of the base-plate or clamp looks improved as it appears it doesn't just rely on 1 locking pin and no pressure but as of now, all the older base-plates & clamps are a no-go for me.
that’s quite a lot. The only combo I can think of that’s too heavy is a canon r3 with a 800mm lens. you can do pretty much anything else. Example: sigma 60-600 with a canon R3. Or literally any Sony body with any lens they sell will be supported
all of those are so OVER PRICED! i have a $50 3lb one thats built very well, that does everything that you said in this video... had it for 5-6 years now. how is this the best? i dont like a tripod should ever cost 400 or w/e $ unless it can fly
