The BEST TROUT STREAM in the US is a SECRET to most - no crowds, big fish, numbers & all public! p27

I'm fly fishing what many consider the best trout stream in the United States in part 27 of the 2 month camping road trip. IMO, what makes this stream the best trout stream in the US...it's truly a wild, free flowing stream...exactly like it was hundreds of years ago. When you fish these streams you're stepping back in time, fishing for native trout in native water, much like our ancestors did! Take tailwaters for example, some would argue are better trout fisheries bc of the incredible fish size and numbers. But in most cases these were created by destroying a system to create a trout fishery. The world famous White River was once a warm water river home to all kinds of aquatic life which were destroyed to create a fantastic trout stream. So it's TRULY A SPECIAL gift to catch native trout from native ranges in wild, free flowing public water...nothing was destroyed... the same aquatic insects and inhabitants are still the same ones that have lived here since the beginning! It's home to big NATIVE westslopes, heard it had bulls too, holes full of fish, all styles work and it's a secret to most! Add on that any technique will work...I caught fish on nymphs, dries and streamers and it's not hard argue why many consider it the BEST TROUT STREAM in the US! It has become one of the best streams I have ever fished...truly a special place. That last hole was stacked with cutthroat!
I walk thru my rig at the end, including flies, leader and tippet! The most productive flies from the 2 month trip are linked below...
I'm living in my truck bed camper for 2 months and road tripping through New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. See the entire series on my channel, the 7k mile road trip playlist or other parts below....

@@LooknFishy That's exactly how I feel when fishing the headwaters of our streams here in PA for native brook trout. Even though I live about an hr. west of Philly, we still have some natives in the headwaters here in the southern part of the state. I'm always in awe when I catch one to think that this is a survivor from many generations before it and of thousands of years before man came along and destroyed much of their habitat......yes, survivors indeed.

I’ve lost some fish that way but I realize you have a much better feel than I do. Would you share your thoughts on this trade off? Thank you!
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 года назад
I only put fish on the reel when I need the drag. This allows me to repeat the drift and get back to fishing quicker since I already have the right amount of line out from the previous fish catching drift. Plus, you can strip in line faster by hand than a reel can pick up line which also gives you more time fishing.

Talked about my set up, including flies in the video. Also linked a video for all the flies from my 2 month trip in the description!

Next time you are walking through bush, turn your rod around and point it backwards as you walk. You don’t have worry about the tip that way
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 года назад
Nah my way is better. I only do it reverse when it's super thick and you can't move. My way allows u to guide the tip around obstructions and avoid snagging stuff behind you and having to stop to free it which is incredibly furustrating. Plus when u trip u just pick up your rod hand which will keep u from breaking rods. Done it this way for 40 yrs never broken a rod!

You mentioned The world famous White River ...... so this is a section of that?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 года назад
No, was trying to explain why I believe this stream is the best because it's a wild free flowing stream with native trout. With respect to some tailwaters like the White which are usually home to non native and in many cases created by destroying another system. Might not have explained that clearly.

Non trail like meas fewer folks before you. MOST seem to have well worn trail.

No trail is what I look for in a stream. Never disappointed when I have to make my own!

Have you tried Tenkara? Some of the places you fish and this hikes in would be perfect for Tenkara.

Nope, pretty much can fish every stream I find with a traditional rig...and more importantly I can fish the tight covered up ones which will be coming up in Wyoming!

Beautiful area. Small cabin on that grassy area but figure the water probably rises much higher than that during spring?

Would be a nice spot for a tent but part of the national forest so no cabins here lol!

A tip! Turn your rod around! Instead of stabbing it through, walk through..
@LooknFishy

Trust me...guiding the tip thru in light brush is way easier...you'll never have to go back and untangle it this way. In dense brush where you can't see in front of you...carry it backwards.

Man, did it even matter where you dropped the fly? Seemed like you could have stayed at that first spot all day, lol. Super vid!

No humans, cattle, or trails . The Westside forests look healthy , with no - beetle kill . Good riparian habitat, and 'fish' ! Nice 😄👏👏👍.
