Thank you for explaining the differences between using an amp at home vs a studio or larger place. I've been watching so many RU-vid videos about amps because I'm just starting out and I'm not confident or good enough yet to go to a guitar store to try out different amps. Im learning on a very cheap modeling amp that sounds really bad but it makes noise so I can at least practice. I want a tube amp but I only play at home and need a low watt option. You are the first person I've seen who took the time to explain how compression works or doesn't work at different volume and power levels. I really learned a lot from this video.

This is exactly why I bought a Fender Bassbreaker 007. Class A, 7 watts, works really well with pedals, sounds awesome at low volume, and compresses reasonably well at low volume. It’s therefore perfect for recording. I fact on all of my recordings, the Bassbreaker is indistinguishable from larger amps.

I've been on the 'good home tone' chase for over a decade. Tried a bit of everything and finally found my favourite to be something I always thought would have been too loud. The orange or15 head paired with a ppc112 cab. Cab sat on top of another cab which helps solve any overbearing bass. Running in 7 watt mode. Volume around 2 or so. Really works for me. Chuck in a reverb on the loop and a decent fuzz/overdrive/boost upfront and its even better.

I use a Blackstar HT5C as a head running into a 1x12 with a Celestion V-type (bigger cab so it has more bass). I run pedals straight into the clean channel, with an EQ in the signal chain to boost bass even more and it sounds great. It's not the most elegant solution but I find myself just hitting open G chords and admiring how good it sounds, so job done really.

Thanks, Buddha, I will try out some of your suggestions. I have a 65 Princeton reissue, and I changed the stock Jensen speaker to a Jensen Vintage Alnico, 10", P10R-F for Fender, 25W, 8Ohm. Unbelievable sounds. But what really made this a super great amp for home use was simply this - I changed the first preamp tube from a 12AX7 to a 12AT7. Easy, affordable mod that gave me more clean headroom at higher volume. I did the same to my Limited Edition Western Noir Blues Deluxe Reissue - tamed it pretty good, and I use it for home practice as well; it has a nice warmer sound now that I can even use for jazz. I tried a 12AY7 as well, but that sucked the tone out of the amp - it wimpers, LOL.

Great video! Totally agree: the best tube amp for home use is the one you like to use! My current favorite is the 5W Champ clone that I built myself last year. Great tone and wonderfully simple with only a volume control. I use it with volume on 3 or 4, using a Broadcast and a SL Drive for boost/saturation and a Caverns 2 for reverb and delay. No complains from the neighbors! 😉

The way I do it (30W Blackstar Artist 2x12) is that I do the master vol at 1/2, then I do normally bass at 1/4, treb and mid at 1/2-is and finally low gain, lots of volume. However, I can live an entire life on the clean channel and how notes ring out, so it may or may not work for you. No matter what I put through it sound so clean, so pristine. No pedals, no nothin - guitar, cable, amp - that is it. Love the vid, tho!!!!

Nice tips/advice. I recently got a ‘79 Fender Champ. It’s more than enough for home use. I like to set the volume much lower than I’d ever play at, then put on a boost pedal to get me to a reasonable volume. The boost gives me a little compression like you said and just adds some sparkle. I think using the boost makes the Champ come alive more than it could by itself at lower volume.
@BuddaGuedes

Yes you’re pushing the preamp. It’s as if you have a gain stage in the amp

Great vid man. This is pretty much how I use my blues Jr at home. There's a definite sweet spot on the pre at around 7 and then as much master as you can get away with. Around 4 on both the pre and power section gives a lovely dynamic clean too from my experience

I learned a great trick on That Pedal Show. Put a compressor pedal at the end of your chain to simulate how the amp would compress. Works pretty good with mild compression, especially if the comp has a blend knob. The drive pedals feed into the compressor which most people would consider to be the wrong way!

Yeah, I’ve also talked about it in this episode. It’s not the same feeling but some people might even prefer it!

@lastralla Hello, would you mind if you are so kind to tell me the chapter of "That Pedal Show" where they put the compressor at the end of the chain? I don't remember seeing him seen. Interesting because I have the Blues Junior 3 in a block of flats, and at most I can only put it at 1'5-2 of Master Volume Still Loud in a flat sorry for my neighbours . I usually have the amp in the place where I play, I also have my pedal board full of good pedals. But what I'm using, due to the neighbors, is a cheap practice amp: a Mustang I (v2), Digital (DSP) 20w, 8 "Speaker, which I can't put too loud or connect to the computer via USB-Audio. Since it can be used as an audio interface and I listen to it through the computer speakers or at night I use it with AKG headphones. The fact is that I prefer the valves a thousand times for quality and for the response of the dynamic range of the single coil pickups. Would you recommend me to take advantage of the amp, the "Two Notes Torpedo"? Any affordable model of this brand that allows me to take advantage of the valves, even if I have to listen to them by monitors to have a controlled volume, since the celestion speaker v30, 12 ", 8 Ohms, that it mounts produces a lot of volume to the minimum that I can put it which is 1'5-2. What could you recommend me colleague? Thanks in advance.

I have 2 low wattage tube amps for home use: a VHT Special 6 Ultra combo (1/2 watt to 6 watts) and a 1 watt Blackstar HT-1R using the clean channel in light crunch gain, it has a headphones/recording out jack too. They are both great with pedals. I upgraded the tubes and speakers in both amps. What you say about compression is important. To me that makes it sound tubey and bluesy. With the S6U I can use the ultra input and ultra gain knob or volume knob as a pseudo master.

I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with 12AY7s & a Lion Tamer in the FX from the UK. A little drive and it will break up even at really low volumes. Im a total amateur but u can play w Pup heights as well to calm down volume, and or use lower output PUs for ur home instrument.

The pickups are not important for volume. Messing up with pickup height will change your guitar’s tone and compression but not volume.

Nice video - you are right: the best amp for you is the one that inspires you the most. For me, right now, I am finding the blackface Fender sound does it. I have a large room for my home studio. 12-foot ceiling, carpeted floor. I have a Princeton Reverb reissue that I have in a Mojo Tone pine cabinet with a Weber 10F150, next to a Deluxe Reverb Reissue and a Twin Reverb Reissue, both also with Weber speakers. Since the room is large, I can play each around 4-5 without it being deafening. Of the three, the Princeton has the best compression, the Twin is the cleanest (duh!), but the Deluxe is a nice intermediate clean with some breakup. I have nice pedals but very seldom use them. Just a little spring reverb and, occasionally, amp tremolo. Never seem to get tired of these amps. I play mostly my American strats, but I also play my Les Paul and Jazzmaster. Quite a variety of sounds!

Informative video. Great job! I use a Traynor YCV20 15 watt amp. It has two channels with volume and gain controls (shared by both channels). It works pretty well as a home amp provided you can give it a little volume. If you need "baby sleeping in the next room" quiet, you have to go with some kind of headphone solution. Good tip on the bass. I'm usually reluctant to dime anything but I'll try it on the bass. Keep the videos coming!

Marshall DSL 15 running at 7w. Perfect. Before that it was a Blackstar HT-5R into an extension can, making 2x12". Also great, but the Marshall has more of a tube tone (5 tubes as opposed to 2) - it works better for me for cleans, though the HT-5R is a great home amp, too. I guess I'm more just into the slightly compressed Marshall clean channel than the Blackstar clean channel. The Blackstar dirty channel is great for home. Very easy to control. Perfect power level. Sounded very good. Overall, the Blackstar was a little thinner sounding than the Marshall. If I bought a second amp as a spare, I might choose a DSL-5. I also use various overdrive pedals and sometimes a compressor to get the tone I want at the low volume. A cheap overdrive that is the most tube sounding I've heard is the Joyo Sweet Baby. I use it more than my TS9 Tube Screamer now. It just sounds more like a cranked amp to me.

The 1st amp I used at home was a Fender Bassman from the late 90s. I used it with an attenuator at first but then I figured out that I could get a great clean yet compressed tone at bedroom volumes by plugging one channel and increasing the volume on a different channel... crazy but it works... do not know if it is healthy or not 😀. These days I like to play at home with Marshall JTM 1c and JMP 1c, specially the JTM. They seem to give a super tone both at quiet and loud volumes, but as soon as I take them to the backyard and there is a little breeze, I regret not plugging a bigger amp.

I don’t quite get what you mean.. Do you plug into the normal channel and increase the volume of the bright channel without an instrument plugged into it? I know this trick from the early 90s Fender Blues DeVille if you want to play bass guitar through it. Just max the treble knob! You won’t hear it when playing bass, but it soaks power and the bass is much quieter and you can play your Bass at bedroom levels.

Great video. I have searched many years for a good home amp. Three suggestions : Engl Rockmaster 20 (built in attenuator), Marshall Origin 20 (selectable to 0,3 watt) or any tube amp with a Wampler Plexidrive (Its very amp like even at low volume) 😊

Good tips. I have a Peavey Classic 30 II which is too loud. I recently purchased an Orange Crush Mini. It isn't tube, but it has a wide range of tones at lower volumes and it costs less than most pedals. I added the small Orange cab for a little extra tone.

Thanks so much mate. I've had the same problem with my HR Deluxe because now I lefte the band so at home it's impossible to play with this amp. The solution for me was to buy a Signal Pad EHX that I put on the loop amp so it runs as a master volumen and so I have all the compression about the preamp, and I can control the volumen master. A cool video, now I'm trying the up Bass top, it works. Thanks for the video and the advice, you rock. Greeting from Spain. You win a new subs.

@anthroknight
@anthroknight 4 года назад
That works really well - I've done that with a 410 60W Hot Rod using a volume pot in the effects loop for years. You can also use a mild OD pedal in front of the amp (in conjunction with the volume pot) and bring the level way down so that you can start to drive the power tubes as well! Works just as well with a cheap tubescreamer clone too. Good luck!

Interesting review. I have a blues junior and a bugera V22. The problem is that the blues junior don't have a real master who works well. With the bugera V22, i have a real master who works very well. Volume at 4 and master at 4, for example, it's good in a room, while enjoying tubes and pedals for a better sound. At low volume and low master, the blues junior don't have good pedals sound. The problem for a room is not the watt, but to have a good master, no matter if the amp has 5 watt, 15 watt, 30 watt, if the master is bad, the amp will always sound too loud.
@BuddaGuedes
@BuddaGuedes 4 года назад
It’s not the master but the pedal section. The master on the blues junior is OK. But you might be enjoying more time compression of the EL84 on the Power section than there one of the 12ax7 on the preamp. Thanks for your comment

For home I'm using a little vox 4 watt with only a gain, master, bass, & treble knob but it's super finicky so I had to learn the hard way the bass absolutely has to be cranked, treble mostly scooped, I keep treble around 2 with my tele & I can get it sounding pretty good after spending quite some time tweaking my pedal board but then some days it sounds completely different & unacceptable to me & i have to start all over & I just can't figure why its been so frustrating. I think i just need a new amp since I'm also always fighting to get rid of that "vox chime" and a new fender HR pro Jr will get rid of it for good.
