I was on a plane when they called for a doctor. Sitting on the aisle, I could see and hear what was going on, but the woman next to me, in the middle seat, couldn’t. She asked what was happening, and I said they think it’s an opioid overdose and a paramedic is helping. She said, oh good, I’m a doctor but I edit a pediatrics journal…I lost all my practical skills years ago.

Might slightly relate. My husband was the youngest of three sons. Growing up, he had to fight the dog for his dinner. The ENTIRE TIME we were together (53 years), I always longed to enjoy a leisurely meal with him, ya know, perhaps having a conversation, or something? It NEVER happened. He ate his every meal as if he had never seen food before. If I DARED to suggest that, oh, I don't know, perhaps we might slow down and ENJOY our meal, he always looked quite surprised by my complaint. Then, he would explain, EVERY SINGLE TIME, that "I WAS HUNGRY!" Uh, yeah I did notice that. Apparently, you were hungry. Love you anyway, Dear. I lost him four years ago.

You must have really loved him to watch him plow through his dinner. Home cooking is very undervalued. It takes forever to plan a variety of different menu choices, long prep and cooking times then to watch it wolfed down in seconds instead of savored by the tastebuds, that would break my heart.

I love the doctor story. This is also the reason it's ridiculous those people who throw up their hands and think the world is ending if a scientist uses their PhD title. "But what if you're on a plane and the flight attendants call you for a medical emergency?! Somebody could die!". Erm no, you just tell them you're not a medical doctor. Even if they are an MD, someone who's worked as a dermatologist for 50 years is probably a worse person to attend a birth than a paramedic or obstetric nurse or midwife.

8.00 Yes, I remember the wooden spoons. Growing up in the 50's, we got these ice creams at the local drugstore. Like Walgreens today, they had some of everything. Always got the wooden spoon. And it did have a distinct flavor. I really miss those days!

the one at the bakery. considering it in France, it's best to assume they simply refuse to speak any other language, until person themselves start speaking. great way of making people feel welcome isn't it?

It could have been in Paris. Doesn't matter how good your French is, if you don't smell like a local then it's the Spanish inquisition, which, obviously, no one expects .

You're usually easy to spot. And often easier to HEAR, when you loudly declare to each other that "NOTHING HERE IS AS GOOD AS WHAT WE HAVE AT HOME!" You should do us all a favour and stay there.
