Is it a UJM? Are these cruisers the new Universal Japanese Motorcycle? These bikes do just about everything very well. This is my Honda Shadow Spirit 1100. A dead reliable 67 cubic inch V-twin that checks all the all-around motorcycle boxes. These bikes are easy to ride, have plenty of power, are very reliable and look good doing it. What do you thing? Wahoo!

I was a Harley guy for ever. Had a friend was a Motorcycle mechanic. I asked him point blank what is the best Motorcycle ever built? He said Honda Shadow 1100 all day! So I bought a 06 1100 Shadow Spirit brand new. 50 thousand miles later its still running like the day i bought it. Only repairs were fuel pump at 48 thousand and a fuel pump pulsar at 45 thousand and recently am having Voltage regulator issues so am now upgrading to a mosfet universal one. Other then that its been great.

I bought my vt1100 in 86 and still have it, old school shadows had 78hp and a 4 speed+ overdrive transmission and in my opinion was the best of the shadow years.

I always like those bikes. That's quite a bit more horsepower too. My 1100 weighs about 600 lb for the tank of gas. I'm guessing the 86 model may have weighed less?

I had two of that type...an '85 and '86....ur right best years of the Shadows...my buddy on his 2000 BMW LT was always trying to out drag race me with it and couldn't...the '85 took me on a round trip from PA to FL...the '86 did 4 of those and then a month long trip out to the west coast and back...no problems.

I have a 02 Sabre VT1100C2. I fell in love with it. Going cross country on it. I am so comfortable on it. Has everything I need and want. Enough power for my style of riding. Has the style and look I love, fits my short legs. I do agree, it could use a bigger tank. My average speed is 80mph. Even if I start out staying at 65, it seems like I end up at 80. It just cruises like a bird gliding. I get about 45 to 50mpg at that speed and 50 to 55mpg at anything under 70mph. I've just gotten in the habit of getting fuel at 100mi. I've only had to switch to reserve once and that was when I hit 118mi on the tank. But I also was going 90 and faster the whole tank. Sometimes the urge to totally open the throttle is hard to fight lol. I have Vance and Hines pipes on her, she's loud. But a nice loud. Nice rumble. I call her Roxie. I added floorboards and that was a another total level of comfort. I'm not one for forward controls and never thought about floorboards before. Been riding for 40yrs. After I added the floorboards, this bike became my forever bike. My retirement plan lol. Traveling across country on my bike is my retirement plan hahahahaha. Semi-retired now. Getting started early on my retirement plan. I'm lucky I only work on the weekends now so I'm taking week long trips now. Enjoying every minute of it too. Can't wait for the month long trips

Bought a 2006 shadow sabre for $1500 with only 5k miles. I think it fits me better than any of the 500 plus bikes I've ridden. Besides my 2006 sv650, if I want to go have some fun and just enjoy riding, I pull out the shadow. I think it handles fantastic and the weight sits real low. Slow speed maneuvering I think, is great. I'll never sell. Good video, brother.

I have the 2002 VT1100C looks just like this. love it, It runs great, fun and easy to ride, plenty of legroom, hydraulic lifters so never have to adjust those. Shaft drive so no chain maintenance. I have a VTX1800C but ride this mostly. Way easier to ride in town and in my driveway compared to the 1800. Not sure why this guy thinks this is not good to ride in town. He must be comparing this to a moped. I had a VT750DC and this 1100 is way easier to steer than even the 750. The VT1100C spirit is gear slightly higher than all the other Vt1100's. I did not notice any vibration on mine. This engine has a dual pin crankshaft so it has even firing. The 1995-1999 VT1100C2 ACE and 1998-2000 VT1100C3 Aero models use a single crank-pin engine and those models only were made to mimic the sound and vibration of the Harley. But not this one. Don't rust what the speedometers say on these they are often off (showing faster by around 10%). They do sell an electronic device that corrects this.
@forgottenmotorcycles
@forgottenmotorcycles 3 года назад
You're right about the Speedo. Mine at 100 mph reads 111 mph. At 60 its off between 2-3 mph. Handling in town is okay but I've got other bikes that work better for this. To me, this bike comes into its own between 55-75 mph. I'll run all day at these speeds. I can always tell when I've hit 85 by the feel through the bars. Vibration is increased at and above this speed on my Shadow. Love these bike! Sounds like you've had a few of these. Thanks for the info.

Mine is a 2004 C2 Sabre. Bought it with 15,000 miles, it now has 24,500 miles. Along the way I've replaced tires, brakes, changed the oil, changed the differential oil, and replaced the plugs. I've had a few repairs, the handlebar turn signal control would stick so I disassembled, cleaned, lubed and put it back together and it's fine now. I also had to replace my stator......that was a big job for me but I got it done; However, I now have a very, very small oil leak from the stator cover. More of an irritant than a problem. I like my bike, I'd buy it again. It gives me the feel of a Harley but not the Harley cost. Pluses over a comparable Harley is first... the purchase price and low inexpensive maintenance.... plus a balanced motor, three valves per cylinder, four spark plugs, liquid cooled, shaft drive and the bare minimum of electronics......electronic ignition, electric fuel pump and that's it. The only negative I have about the bike is when you have to jack the bike off the ground. You just can't roll a jack underneath and jack it up. There is a video of how to build the jig on RU-vid......it's a very old video but it helps. I enjoyed the video, thank you.

I didn't catch if you mentioned what year your Shadow was produced.? I just bought an '86 Shadow VT1100, I always really liked the aesthetics of the '85-86 bikes as they're definitely a V-Twin cruiser but almost a bit more like a Virago, or Intruder as far as the V-Twin and looks for the Virago and it seems super similar with the mid controls much like my Yamaha XJ1100J Maxim and similar in wheelbase but narrower with the V configuration. I'm really looking forward to riding all the cruiser bikes this year. The poor Maxim 's (both '82s; 750, 1100) and I just grabbed up a '94 FXDWG Evo 80 Dyna Wide Glide. I'm now eyeing a Kawasaki '96 ZG1000 Concourse and a VF1200 just hit Marketplace today(that's easily the most powerful cruiser of the '80-90s era with the ZG behind it. There's also a super clean '83 CB1000C that's super similar in looks to my first ever bike ('82 CB650SC Nighthawk) I would be happy just getting the CB1000C as it's extremely clean and also has a windscreen. About to join the Combat Veterans Rider's Association and get in some good group riding and some benefit rides and community service volunteering.

I’m really only getting 125 miles before I have to flip to my reserve tank... is that an issue? What should I be getting?
@forgottenmotorcycles
@forgottenmotorcycles 3 года назад
If I'm running fast, over 75, I'm usually getting around 40-41 mpg or about 125 per tank. When running 60 I'm able to bet something closer to 150 miles per tank. I'd check your tire pressure, fuel filter and the air filter. Also, the service manual for this bike calls for new spark plugs every 8000 miles. Let me know if any of this helps. How do you like the bike otherwise?

The 1100 Shadow Spirit is a sleeper in that it may not excel in any 1 area (except comfort), yet overall, it does everything well & yes - it may be the best all-around UJM ever. I had a 2017 Triumph Bonnie T120 (1200cc) to re-experience the feel of my '66 & '68 Bonnies. It was a great bike - beautiful, more powerful, but too techy for me. @@forgottenmotorcycles42k seems to be the number. My new to me '86 VT1100 has higher miles at just over 42k but it's had a complete professional carburetor service last year and new tires installed. The seller even kicked in a magnetic tank bag and a rear storage duffel. Eventually the saddle bags from my Dyna will go on the Shadow as they seem to fit the look better than they do the Harley. My only concern so far is the cooling system as the previous owner was definitely not savvy about motorcycles and wrenching so I will be checking the whole of that over tomorrow and doing the preventative maintenance it needs for peace of mind. I think after that a windscreen is the only other main addition I intend to add and gasoline to burn up the miles with!

Sweetly simple mid size cruiser. I ride an '04 model looks just like it. I'm getting ready to do a carb overhaul next week. Hope it ain't the fuel pump. By the way I read that they copied the Wide Glide Harley on proportions. OH, what were your symptoms on the fuel pump failure? I'm getting a lot of lean popping from the rear cylinder. I do get looks and comments of admiration occasionally and people like all the chrome

Fuel pump failure symptoms: Bike started and ran fine with full tank of fuel. Bike would not start if the tank was close to empty. We think this was because fuel would not gravity to the carbs. Never had any popping or poor running issues...that may be your carbs? We didn't take the rear swing arm off to change that fuel pump & filter. I took a 12 point wrench of the right size to the grinder until I could get it to move enough to get that forward bolt off. Took many little turns of that wrench to bet that lock bolt off...and back on. These are great motorcycles. Loved that bike. Wahoo!

Had a 1999 VT00C for 19 years, till a work truck murdered her. Great bike! Top speed is over 115, rode her generally at 90-95 on freeway, 47mpg...and Im a very heavyset man. Your windshield must slow you down. Only upgrades (non cosmetic ones) were cartridge simulators in forks and drilled out silncers on pipes. The cartridge simulator completely changed the bike...nice and soft in the straights, but braking and cornering completely changed (way way better). I could keep up with SOME sport bikes (if they didn't know how to pick a good line). In 19 years, NEVER had to replace back brake, it wore like iron. Miss that bike!

Last year, with all the shutdowns etc, there really wasn't much to do, so I decided to buy myself another bike. I've been riding since I was a teenager (many years ago), but sold my last bike a few years ago. Was looking for a Shadow Spirit 1100 but couldn't find a good one at the time. I found a really nice VTX 1300C though and enjoyed riding that until the snow started flying. As for your question about the fuel pump - the last bike i owned before I bought the VTX was an older Honda V45 Magna. Found it on Craigslist for a few hundred dollars. It was very clean, except for two things: there was a small tear in the seat and it wouldn't start. The mileage was really low though, and the price was right, so I trailered it home as a project bike. The previous owner said that it had an issue with the fuel pump that he had tried to fix a few years before, but couldn't get it running. He actually tried to re-wire the pump, but botched the job. I couldn't find a factory replacement, so wired in a universal pump that matched the pressure and flow rates per Honda spec. The bike still wouldn't run unless I wired the pump directly to the battery. It wouldn't get power through the wiring harness, despite a good, clean connection and good fuse and ground. Eventually tracked the issue to a faulty ignitor module. Replaced with a junkyard part I found on eBay and the bikek ran like new.

@forgottenmotorcycles 3 года назад
Sounds like you did your due diligence and were rewarded in kind! You're the second person to mention this module. Second pump was from Honda and works great! Love this Honda!

Does vibration in handlebars at road speeds bother the hands?(I had an 883 and it was terrible). My commute is 52 miles 1 way so how fatigued are you at an hour or so? If you do 600+ miles a day I'm guessing fine. Thanks for your time.

Hello, She'll do 75 for hours (not laboring) without any problems. Clutch is a little heavy but okay. Handlebar vibrations are low but over 85 they are present. I've run this bike down the interstate for hours at 80+ without any real problems. My Sportster, an old Ironhead, vibrates significantly and wears a person out even at 50mph. If you're going to ride the Honda 52 miles at a shot she'll be great...leaving you wanting to keep riding and not wanting to go to work.... I've owned many bikes over the years. He likes it just like his 1100. The original owner kept the 600 garaged for a few years and dropped it and there is a dent on the gas tank. Its been through a lot. One time the clutch cable went kaput and had to put it in a U-haul van in order to get it fixed. Had to do some other regular maintenance and upgrades, it is chain driven. Had to replace the chain, the tires that were originally on it were Dunlops, which are very crappy tires so we had to go to CC Powersports in Clarksville,Indiana to get new ones. I don't know if you are familiar with the motorcycle tire Manufacturer: Shinko but they work like a charm. My buddy had his 1100 wayyy before he met me. But he really liked it a lot, and he is a big fan of skulls. Skulls on the license plate, skull tire air valve caps. And skull and crossbones on the front of the windshield. This 600 has a rare paint scheme. Two tone. He was originally gonna paint it black but it was decided that we'd keep it the way it is. Harley Davidson sued Honda due to the Two tone paint scheme a long time ago. The 600 is named: Blue Dragon, but we call it Dragon for short. I actually named it myself.

@patrickhenry236
@patrickhenry236 3 года назад
@@forgottenmotorcycles my bike has the 3 and a half gallon tank that is more streamlined in south pacific blue and black, and its engine is slightly detuned(found out it was a California outfitted model). The 4 speed came out in I think 1990 or 91, and was around until 95 or 96. Its great for cruising at speeds of 55 or 60, but highway speeds above 75 have the motor humming pretty good. For the tires, depends on the bike and how you ride( to romp the throttle or not romp, that is the question), but so far mine are sitting at 15000 miles on this set and only the center of the rear tire has really worn at all. The rear tire still has a ton of tread on the sides for turning grip. I don't run my tires completely bald anyway, but for my bike the pirelli can run 20000 miles on a set. Again I don't do burn outs or other such stuff, but that is me. For the earlier engine performance I have to agree. My father had an 85, one of the first 1100's to be sold here in the states. It was a 5 speed and th e engine was tuned for maximum performance. He opened it up one day, and it hit 115 before he let off to slow down. I have memories of being on that bike with him when I was little, which is why I wanted my 1100, and why when I found one in 2012 that had 1800 actual miles on it I grabbed it.

The fuel pump was a PITA to change, but I got it done. I found a free download for the Factory Service Manual, so I am able to do all the work myself.. For the $ and the fact that it’s a Honda, I feel like I won the lottery. Easy bike to ride and fairly comfortable. Mine has 57,000 miles on it and starts right up. I have a beautiful customized '96 1100 ACEwith 13K miles and I've been saying the same for the last two years......"selling it when spring comes around" but it never happens. Just amazing how she runs like new as all these years. so much easier to ride (lighter) than my 2003 Road King

@@mr.recruiterp3583 “runs like new”...with only 13K on it, it’s barely broken in. ACE is a nice model, probably the best Shadow model in my opinion. That’s pretty cool it’s a 1100. I do enjoy that the bike is not too heavy, but the “C” model is kinda like a Dyna, so it’s not overly maneuverable. If I do end up keeping it, I’ll probably put new shocks on the rear. I was pretty impressed when I pulled the carbs, they looked new inside and if anyone had been in there, they new what they were doing. All that being said, I think I want to pick up a 1st gen Valkyrie Interstate. They are going for a good price and seem to be easy to find with aftermarket exhaust systems...they sound amazing. Valkyrie is a really good bike like the shadow...well like any Honda actually.
@mr.recruiterp3583
@mr.recruiterp3583 2 года назад
@@Todd66 I'd say the only issue I've ever had is that if I don't start it up (sometimes for months) one of the carbs dries out so then I have to remove it and clean it out. Done it about 3 times over the years. But it's my fault for forgetting to run them dry if I don't plan on running the motor. I wish I could post a picture here because you'd appreciate what she looks like. A friend just picked up a Valkyrie from an old timer who had it in storage for the last 15 yrs. Sweet looking and it runs like new as well.

I have a2007 sabre, bought in 2012 with only 12000 miles. Have 34,000 on it now, runs perfect. No valve adjusts to worry with and shaft drive. Oil changes every 3000 with amsoil and new coolant every two years and brake fluid flush every two years. A total workhorse for cruising 300 miles on a Saturday. Hello from Houston, Tx.

@@forgottenmotorcycles Both of them is great bikes, just a matter of taste. Spirit is more classic chopper like, a Copy of HD XFDWG 1999/2000. Look at it and you will see your Spirit in many details. Had the Spirit 5 years, I wanted one in better condition and like Sabre more than Spirit. Maybe because in my country Sabre is something rare and unique.
