Several years ago, I didn't know much about watches, but I knew I liked the diver style, and I wanted an automatic. At the time it was coming up to my birthday, and my mom asked me what I wanted. I found the cheapest diver I could on Amazon, which happened to be an Invicta grand diver, which is like the pro, but a little bigger. I didn't have any idea about the brand, but I liked the look, and it was affordable, and importantly, an automatic movement. My mom of course got it for me, and I fell for it hard, got a new strap for it, etc. She died about a year later, and it ended up being the last important thing she bought me, and I still love it, and wear it quite a bit, even since I've added more watches to the collection. I couldn't care less about what people think of the brand.

Did my last 3 tours in Afghanistan with a G-Shock DW5600. Couldn't kill the thing. And it does still sit in the bottom corner of my watch box. I'm pretty anti quartz, but I'm glad I made an exception for that watch. The main reason I bought it specifically for Afghanistan is because it was the one watch I could find that let me keep real world time and "Afghanistan Time" one one time piece. For those of you who've been there, you know what I mean.

Great video. I was looking for a quality dive watch. I managed to get the King Turtle with black grenade pattern for $499 Australian from a local dealer as they were on a clearance sale as the store was not going to be an authorised dealer of Seiko anymore after they sold out. They would still do all warranty work for anything sold though which was what helped me decide to get it. Great value at that price but definitely wouldn’t have paid the $999 RRP

I’ve got a couple off your list. Wearing my Hamilton Khaki King II (bracelet) as I type, and for wet work I have a Casio Dura Marlin (added a black stainless steel bracelet). My beater is a dozen year old Seiko Solar 100M (V158) that keeps to +3 second per month . . . like clockwork. When Seiko discontinued the capacitor I bought a couple, but haven’t had to use them yet.

I bought my Hamilton khaki auto on the steel bracelet several yrs ago and it still catches peoples eye & it can go causal or formal & everything in between. Changing the bracelet to a leather band or nato strap really changes its personality. Still keeps perfect time! My beater watch is actually a really fun & versatile watch. It’s my Casio world time. It’s funny because even that $35 watch sometimes people notice it & say “hey you got a Casio too!”

I find it interesting that you have both the Bertucci at $100 and Hamilton at $500. I have the Bertucci A-1s that's been my beater field watch for the last 10 years and every once in a while I have the thought that I should get a real field watch and go look at the Hamilton. I leave the shop under whelmed and reafirmed that the $100 quartz Bertucci captures the essence of a field watch better and it's all the field watch I ever need.

Maybe - or maybe it'd come across as an Ali shill to include them, because as a value proposition the likes of San Martin can be very difficult indeed to beat. Quite tempted by one myself at the moment... SN004-Q-B - Bronze cased diver with an SW200 - under £400 (before any import, presumably, but still looks a bit of a bargain). I don't need it, and typically prefer to wear bracelets over straps or I might've already jumped - but damn it's a lot of watch for the money and that bronze holds some real appeal.

I started collecting in 2020 after my father passed away in December 2019. I got a few of the Invictas from his collection. They weren't Pro Divers, but they weren't completely obnoxious either. When I started checking out the Invicta website, that's when I really went down the rabbit hole and wound up owning several Pro Divers. Like you pointed out, stainless steel and automatic movement for about eighty bucks made me very interested. There's definitely some cost cutting. As you often say, your money is spread very thin. Sapphire crystal would be a step up, the lume is crap, and the bezel action can be hit or miss. But I think they're very good watches and I'm glad to see them getting some praise from folks online. And I completely agree with you on the Glycine Combat Sub, which is my favorite dive watch.

I like what you said about the Tissot. I picked up a couple of those Calvin Klein automatics they were clearly made by Tissot They have the ETA movement that actually are decent looking watches that I paid less than $100 for a brand new in the gray market because nobody wanted a watch with Calvin Klein on the dial. At first I was going to redial them and strip out the movement, but I wore them a little bit, and they kind of grew on me.

Great video! For the under $50 category, I would add 2 more watches. First, the Casio Men's Tough Solar AQ-S810W-1AVCF ($38.46 Solar with 100m water resistance). This is IMHO, one of the best beater watches ever, and I have never had the solar power go below high even though I don't wear it every day. Next the Timex Men's Ironman Endure 30 Shock 42mm Watch. It is about $43.28 and has a full 200m water resistance. While the Casio is a little cheaper, this is also an inexpensive watch which IMHO is a little more comfortable to wear than the Casio (that's why the Timex is my watch of choice on long international flights).
@owenlaprath4135
@owenlaprath4135 4 месяца назад
I had the smaller 800 version of that Casio (42mm instead 48mm). I bought for being Tough Solar ... and HATED it! It bit me on my 19cm/7.5inch wrist, so I do not even want to know what the bigger 810 would do! It went back to Amazon. The problem with Casio is, that most of their watches are now oversized and shaped like porcupines, that want to bite my wrist all the time. They are MUCH worse than Invicta in that regard, with Invicta actually being smoothly shaped and thus a lot friendlier to wear, believe it or not. WTF happened to the small and smooth Casios of the 70s and 80s I grew up with? They could have upgraded and evolved them with larger displays, and cases big enough to accommodate that, but smooth and without edges! But no, they had to turn them into weird fantasy military junk fantasies for teenagers on dope. The only one left for older eyes needing a larger display, which is also 100meter proof or better, is the Duro, but that is not solar, and just another battery eater. They are missing so much in opportunities for great watch designs. Back to other brands, for automatics and other, better solar watches! Sorry, Casio lost me a while ago!
