Im traveling to Tokyo in a little less than a week and I honestly thought that i would have to just eat rice and miso broth the entire trip. The fact that there is a place that has vegan omurice makes me so happy! Thank you for your recommendations, I will be going to all of them.
Ahh yes!! There are so many vegan restaurants and cafes in Japan recently. It's gotten become more accessible for vegans! I'll be making a Kyoto version soon too~^ ^
Okay this might be the most useful video EVER! The misconception that vegans and veggies struggle in Japan is totally untrue - from my research. My friend is visiting next month so I’m gonna share this video with her right now! New subscriber and can’t wait for more videos!
Welcome!! And thanks for watching~ It really isn’t hard for vegans in Japan anymore! It was like 5/10 years ago but there are so many options now. I think it’s just hard if you go into a non-vegan place since a lot of restaurants won’t alter their dishes to accommodate. Also the countryside can have limited options (but honestly even in the countryside I find vegan gems sometimes). Anyway, hope you and your friend can enjoy some good food !~ ^^
@@ChefinJapan Right now I'm planning for a 4 week trip across Japan, desperately searching for vegan advice online so this was really helpful. I'm wondering what the situation is like if you don't really have a place to cook but also can't afford to eat at restaurants three times a day though 😅
@@jg6125 I’m glad to hear this was helpful! Honestly it is a bit tough to navigate convenience stores as a vegan because things you’d expect to be vegan often aren’t… I recommend checking out the Instagram page “@itadakihealthy” she posts a lot of useful info about vegan stuff in convenient stores here & super markets! ^^
Hi! If you are interested to try other delicious vegan restaurants/cafes in Tokyo it will be a pleasure to introduce you to new places. Like Cori, Premium Sow, etc... ;)
Ikea in Shibuya has a restaurant on the top floor which has vegan options. Make sure to order the "plant based meat balls." They also have a ridiculously low-priced vegan ice cream cone at the front of the store. It's something like thirty yen, which is insane.
Great video! I know this is a Tokyo vegan video but the vegan meal I always remember was Kyoto Engine Ramen!! I’m not vegan but it was one of the best bowls of ramen I’ve had in my life!
Thank you so much, Ive been living off of family mart Calbee chips and hashbrowns for the past couple of days, found the vegan noodles in Natural Lawson the other day, but now thanks to you I have a functional itinerary and these places are still in business from the looks of it!
Than you so much for posting this ❤ I’m visiting next year and I was a bit worried about finding vegan food. Now I’m super excited to try all this delicious food 🎉
Great Video on veg food in japan.i saw video which said its impossible to be vegan in japan, but your video is different. The junk burger is really massive
Nice video! Those places seem all great... but I would like to know where to find more traditional vegan options in Tokyo (such as udon, okonomiyaki, tonkatsu, takokayi, etc.)
Ahh yes, it can be hard to find things like that that are actually vegan.. but they do exist! I would def recommend trying number 6 on the list (the vegan izakaya) and 4 & 8 for ramen, maybe 12 too for the Japanese fried "chicken"!~ ^ ^
This is the ultimate Tokyo guide. Where would be the best place to stay to easily visit all of your recommendations? I think I'm going to plot them all on a map to try and work it out.
THANK YOU! I am in Tokyo right now and have been living on Umeboshi Onigiri and baked goods because I couldn't find anything to eat. Will try your list!
Thanks so much for this video! I've always wanted to try karage, but have never found any good looking non-meat version before. I'll be so excited to try that when I hear to Tokyo and Kyoto later this year!
I am totally planning to make a video like that when I move into my new apartment! For now a Kyoto version of this one will be coming soon~ thanks for the comment and the request!!
Great video. I went to Tokyo in 2019 and did all my research, and went to many of places you mentioned. However, the BEST vegan ramen I went to was just by accident, I was walking past a normal ramen place and happened to notice they had 2 veg options. The first one was so good, I went back again to try the other one, and it was even better. Unfortunately I believe they closed after covid.
I'm also a vegan and I have visited Tokyo 10 times..I have never been in a restaurant in Tokyo on any of my trips because the language barrier is too intimidating. Especially the crowded izakayas in Shinjuku. I end up eating food in my hotel that I brought from home. On my last trip, this food caused a problem going through Japanese customs. They x-rayed all my protein bars and asked a lot of questions. Added the extra problem of being a vegan and that I travel alone and don't know any locals, I just gave up on eating in restaurants or cafes.
There is a thing, that is called "the vegan passport", which is a little booklet, which explains what veganism is, what vegans eat and do not it, all on one site. And on every site it is written in a different language. I need to buy that one, when I start to visit other countries again, but maybe that is something for you.
Thank you for posting. There are really no Japanese vegan or vegetarian menu. This is all new to them, and the miss it by a mile. It is not like India or China where vegan and vegetarian food is there galore. In fact, they have not even discovered Seitan!!
I'll be in Tokyo next week and am so excited to try these places! Thanks for making this video! Do these places charge more if you order off the American/English menu? I saw lots of videos that mentioned that.
Love the list, I just visited Japan last fall but only was able to go around the Kansai area. Excited to check out the vegan spots next time I visit Tokyo, was hoping to visit this spring but we shall see!
I have been reluctant to travel to Japan due to the fish allergy but this gives me hope. Would you say vegan restaurants are easily came across in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka? Or do they require some planning to get to?
This was a great video thank you!! Just wondering I noticed many of the restaurants looked empty of customers in your video clips… are these places pretty obscure and unpopular to tourists/non-vegans/locals?
That’s a great question actually! I just purposely only film areas of the restaurant when there’s no people because I try my best not to film people without their permission 😆 But actually many of these restaurants were crowded before or after or in other off camera parts of the restaurant~
do we need to reserve a table, with any of these if coming in sakura season and if we do how far in advanace,is a few days ok? theres only going to be one or maybe two people
Personally I didn’t reserve any of them, but it is always best to check the Instagram or website of the restaurant for online reservations just in case it’s an extra busy travel week!
Hi! Thanks for the recent video! I wanted to ask if you had found any nice restaurants that are not strictly vegan but have vegan options? Specifically in the Minato area or close to it? I am looking for places that I can go to with friends or colleagues who do not keep a vegan diet. I did not see very much on the happycow website.
Hello! Numbers 7, 9, 10, and 12 on the list in this video were not strictly vegan, but had amazing vegan options! I'm not sure about specifically in Minato, but they should be easily accessible from there.^ ^
@@ChefinJapan ahh I was hoping that wasn’t the case lol. Going to have to just have a big eating budget lol. Thanks for replying and Thank-you for making this video! for sure I’ll have to try out a couple of these place’s
Sometimes beer is technically not vegan because animal-derived products like gelatine or isinglass (a type of fish-based gelatine product) are used to refine the brew 😅 This shop makes sure to select beers that do not use those animal based refining products!
I loved it until i learned vegan falafel was the most common vegan option...this has to change I'm calling upon anyone in Japan that reads to do their part and make this change
