MF Kid I wouldn’t say trash. He had the grandest plan of all the villains. He wanted to unify and take over all of demon world and human world and wanted to feed off humans as much as he can. He literally was going to go to war with Mukuro and Raizans remaining people. The arc was only rushed because of the creators health.
@@razkable Pain?? How old are you? Freiza is iconic and Togura is amazing. Pain is alright. Not special by any measure except to little kids who grew up on naruto shippuden because they didn't know any better. You must be young if you didn't connect with Sensui. He's definitely targeted at an older audience, an audience who certainly wouldn't rank Pain among the best manga villains. I didn't connect with Sensui until I rewatched the series as an adult
I agree. I hate how it became a tournament arc. The dark tournament couldn’t be beat, so this one is just known as the lessor tournament arc in the series. (Forget Randos tournament arc) I think if there was more time to develop the story that it could have been a very interesting political intrigue story. Maybe a large battle on three sides. Yusuke being significantly weaker then the other two, but making up for that with the aid of his friends, and the human psychics. Just some ideas they could have gone with.
I often do and I think it would have been the early prototype version of HxH's Dark Continent. We never really got to see the true depths of what Demon World was supposed to be. Koenma's description of that realm was never really recognized in the 3 Kings Arc. Being bottomless, with several layers to its depths, housing unspeakable creatures like the ones Yusuke pictures that could destroy the world in the blink of an eye. Demon World is the Dark Continent if it was rushed. Hopefully it doesn't come to a similar fate in the future.
The debate _has_ to come down to between Toguro and Sensui. Sensui is all-around a bit more interesting, but the emotional resonance that Toguro has on the series as a whole is unquestionable. His shadow is cast over all of Yusuke's actions after they meet. Sensui was a very rewarding experiment in storytelling style for the series, and pushed the show forward into more mature themes in a sophisticated way, but I think Toguro still edges out the victory.
well said..agreed 100%...toguro was better defined and left more of an impact on his arc and yusuke as a whole after it due to his connection to genkai but sensui pushed the shows ideals and ideas further to real interesting depths...them both being human makes it even harder to choose...it just feels like sensui and koenma had more beef...yusuke and toguro had real beef...
Exactly! Toguro's influence on Yusuke was so far reaching that every time Yusuke got into some internal monologue in the series, there was always a Toguro reference... almost as if asking himself, "What would Toguro have done in this situation?" or "What mistake would Toguro have done at this situation that would make him into who he was?"
When you say BEST VILLAIN I'm going Sensui. BEST CHARACTER among the villains in the show is where debate should lie if you want to put Toguro over him. At the core of their actions, Toguro was not villainous. Power-hungry? Sure. Enthralling? Very. Violent? When he wanted to be, but he wasn't blood-lusting. He had a sense of morality. Sensui's actions and plans came from being mentally unhinged and having his dichotomy of the world flipped on it's head. It's like comparing the Joker to Bane. You can't go wrong with either, but objectively the Joker is more lacking in sanity and Bane has a sense of justice driving his actions much like Toguro. To each their own flavor, I guess. I would lean towards the unhinged talking about impact as villains. As a VILLAIN, Sensui was much more destructive and he imposed a threat that scales Toguro out of the picture as far as severity, but if it was about power it'd be Yomi. It's not about power. Toguro wanted to see Yusuke grow even if it was his expense to hedge his bets against actually validating his choices in life, but Sensui wanted to kill Yusuke just out of some "You took my job/get out of my way" beef and destroy all humans based on the earth-shattering sights he saw. What I'm hearing in this video, and in a lot of the comments, is who is the most well-written character among the villains? Sensui is the best villain by a mile. Objectively. And not a single villain in the show even approaches the threat his presence caused. Toguro has a very strong argument to be the most well-written among the villains and I would personally give him the nod there slightly off his impact on character relationships. PS: Yomi is not a villain, he is just a demon trying to take care of his people. If anything he's a man of convictions as the leader of a large community, but he's not villainous. Two-man race for any of these discussions besides raw power.
Here's how I view the Yu Yu Hakusho villains: 1. Hiei as a villain was okay, due to being skilled enough to give Yusuke Urameshi trouble. 2. Gouki was a thug and obviously the weakest of the trio. 3. Kurama doesn't count as a villain unless you include his past as Yoko Kurama, and even then Kurama changed for the better. 4. Rando was decent villain due to how he cruelly broke Kuwabara's arm and ribs, plus the challenge he gave to Yusuke. 5. The four saint beasts provided a challenge for Yusuke and his team, but Suzaku was clearly the best of them all and he was just okay. Now to rank the 3 villains of Yu Yu Hakusho who I believe are the best: 3rd place : Yomi Yomi is without a doubt the strongest villain in Yu Yu Hakusho (Mukuro and Raizen aren't considered villains since unlike Yomi, they had no interest in uniting demon world or taking over spirit world and human world), and he had an interesting past with Yoko Kurama that molded him into a powerful demon that is a threat to 3 worlds (Yomi didn't necessarily give up his ambitions by the end of the series), plus he learned from his mistakes. 2nd place: Younger Toguro If you believe that Toguro is the best villain, that's fine. He was the first real threat to Yusuke and his team, from the rescue Yukina mission to the end of the dark tournament. He was a complex character with an interesting past with Genkai, and throughout his story Toguro's motivations were hard to understand. Plus, despite being defeated, Toguro got what he wanted in the end. 1st place: Shinobu Sensui My favorite villain in Yu Yu Hakusho is Sensui, who much like Toguro, was a complex character, but I felt he was a bigger threat to Yusuke, his team, the human world as a whole. His plan to flood the human world with demons, his manipulations of people, his seven different personalities which allow him to "solve the paradox of how one can punish if doing so requires you to make the same sins", his backstory, his power being greater than any villain and/or antagonist before him, his brilliant planning, the complexity of his true personality, the fact that he killed Yusuke, and the fact that it took Raizen possessing Yusuke's body to defeat him are all the things I like about Sensui and makes him arguably the best villain.
Devan Smith if you haven’t seen it in a while Rewatch it! I hadn’t watched it since I was a kid and it was on toonami and watched it through cause I really wanted to remember what happened. After watching it all the way through, I realized how great it was and loved every moment. It’s shorter than a lot of the Big anime but that kind of makes it better.
Toguro is by far the best. He's the Freeza of YYH: a slow burn, a villain set up for a looong time before the final confrontation. Gives it so much more weight. The villains after this also follow the DBZ format: cool, but kind of pulled out of thin air.
But how about Sakyo? An ordinary human, with a fondness for killing and causing suffering and pain, as he did to small animals when working in a pet shop. When Sakyo discovered the demon world, he saw an opportunity to enrich himself at the expense of both humans and demons, exploiting and encouraging the selfishness and indulgences of the EVILS of both the human and the demon world. The Black Black Club he joined funded the Dark Tournament that celebrated violence, rewarded the most blood-thirsty champions with any wicked dream they could conceive (enabling Toguro to completely fall to evil). Sakyo became a billionaire who lived life without any care for absolutely anyone or anything but himself, and at the same time, had no love for even himself (as shown by his gambling away his own life at the end of the Dark Tournament). Sakyo was in the same company of GONZO TARUKANE, of all people. FRIENDS with TARUKANE, but still willing to cheat and kill him off. Even Sakyo's relationship with Kuwabara's sister was laced with evil intentions. She realized that Sakyo gave her his attention only for the enjoyment of breaking her heart. Sakyo knew he was going to gamble away his life and probably lose. Sakyo didn't want to die without having an innocent woman mourn and experience grief even long after his death. It was Sakyo's idea to connect the demon world to the human world, allowing him to perpetuate all the mentioned evils even further, inspiring Sensui with his own plot to kill all of the humans. In fact, Sakyo promoted and perhaps funded one or more of the "Feast of Human Vices" that made Sensui lose his sanity. To Sakyo, these wild parties were nothing to lose your mind over. Contrast that to Sensui, who actually cared about justice, creating a way to "make up for" his past indiscriminate persecution of demons by wanting to root out what he believed were the real "monsters", the humans he referred to as the "plague". I also find it amusing that Sakyo's evils are often overlooked because of how iconic Toguro and Sensui are in terms of power, giving Sasuke an even more evil feeling by allowing him to remain camouflaged, hidden away, almost as if to deceive us. Sakyo is Yu Yu Hakusho's greatest villian not because of any power, hatred, revenge, pursuit of justice, or plot but rather for his absolute APATHY. Sakyo committed to EVIL because of BOREDOM. As a gambler, he lived for the excitement of risking everything, meaning he never truly valued ANYTHING, quickly willing to throw absolutely everything away. Had Sakyo never been born, the entire world (human AND demon) would have been better off. This the the very definition of sinister and evil, qualities worthy of the GREATEST VILLIAN.
If anything Toguro is more like Cell. He’s more of an antagonist than a villain. Freeza was just down right evil who wanted to enslave and kill for fun and did any cheap tactic to get the upper hand. Cell was a villain but at least he always wanted the fair one. Just like Toguro, Cell wanted the ultimate challenge to test out his strength. Freeza doesn’t like it when anyone is equal or above him
I don’t understand when people say something is “by far the best” out of a list of options, then list some reasons, and then completely ignore everything else that the other characters do well. Sensui does things better than toguro, he’s a much more nuanced character in terms of his personality and he serves the atmosphere of chapter black extremely well. His introduction and send off are arguably on the same level as toguro if not better
Unfortunately i dont think yomi is a contender for best villain compared to the greatness of sensui and toguro, simply because of the lack of time he was given. Due to his arc being rushed (and having to give many characters their time) he didnt get enough time to be fleshed out. I thought the dynamic between him and his son was awesome but we didnt get to see alot of it which is a shame
i actually think sensui both toguros and even suzaku are above yomi...he just doesn't do anything...heck I would put doctor above him if not for his importance
As abrupt as it was, I will always love the ending. Having Yusuke's story end with him changing the power structure of the demon world, then bowing out of this new system he helped create to go settle down and live his life is some of the most effective closure I've ever seen in a series.
@@joshuaott7783 lol oh you are one of those guys...itd be like comparing buu to frieza or cell yeah buu would wreck him based on “power level” but we all know who the better villains were
I completely agree. But how about Sasuke? An ordinary human, with a fondness for killing and causing suffering and pain, as he did to small animals when working in a pet shop. as a yyh fan im glad this fanbase is smaller cause its not toxic..we all praise the show ...people dont watch yyh to hate on it...like they seem to do with other long shonnen cough fairy tail naruto bleach dragonball...this show appealed to its fanbase.....
The part for me that really made Yomi an awesome character is when Yusuke is is a daze and said he doesnt know what he was fighting for and Yomi ended up being so infuriated by that, that he kicked the shit out of Yusuke. While doing it he mentions that he gave up everything he thought was important to fight in the tournament with honor and that Yusuke was the reason for that.
Yomi is an obscenely underrated character. Despite rushed development, he's such an interesting, layered person who's hard to figure out, sort of like a villain Kurama. Yomi's ambition as a ruler and the politics of his city of Gandera, and Demon World as a whole, is something I wish we could've seen more of. Not my favorite villain of the series, but definitely deserves more praise.
They all tested him mind body and soul in different ways. They all had to do with Yusuke dealing with his purpose and will to fight. Heie was a villain too and a constant anti hero that kept yusuke in line like an evil darker angel. They tested his ability to stay true to what matters. Genkai tried to teach him that and parts of that was expressed the more he fought. It's about him conquering sides of himself Suzaku ..Selfishness Toguro.. Fear; Responsibility Sensui ...Morality; Non linear solution, Necessity for Darkside (Human and Demon) Yomi ...Purpose; Not being in Control/His lineage/over all Reason for Living period, Gratitude for Life in General Confronting parts of his Soul, and his very existence...what's next, who are you when the fighting is over? What are you fighting for...who are you when the dust settles? You're not angry anymore, why can't you allow yourself to be thankful? Afraid of not being worthy if you stop figut because that's all you know...are there not other parts to you? Is sacrificing your life with her worth your pursuit? He's asking Grown Man questions at age 16...saving the world 4 times before 18yrsold
Agreed. Toguro was surprisingly relatable in his quest to conquer mortality and his fear in embracing his humanity, and ultimately accepting the punishment he felt he deserved. That last scene between him and Genkai😭😭💖
It’s crazy how popular Toguro is honestly. I remember it used to air when I was a kid. So I was having a conversation with my brother about yu yu hakusho and i mentioned his name and my mom was like “Toguro?” And then said “he’s strong I remember him from that show you used to watch” lol she’s funny
Me and my buddy got to season 4 and this anime is great. I love how well this series teases power like Toguro explaining how he's nothing to the a class after slapping around major threats to the group at the time.
while the peak of the show being the dark tournament means toguro was probably the best, I think that objectively its Sensui. The idea of a previous spirit detective having a mental breakdown and going rogue plus the progression of moving past the basic "humans =good demons=bad" is just so interesting. We see that the worlds are grey and humans can be just as much evil monsters as some demons, as well demons not all just being mindless evil monsters and that they deserve to live in peace too. Even though the last two arcs (especially three kings) felt rushed, it just shows how great Sensui was that he's still in the convo. Speaking of rushed, I felt the spirit defense force hunting down a fugitive Yusuke could have been an amazing arc all by itself in-between the chapter black and three kings arcs (instead of them just being pushed over in one episode). Would love to see a remake/continuation where the last 2 arcs get expanded upon before going to new stuff
Sensui was a villain like no other. Very unique. Very psychologically troubled. Didn’t care about strength or possessions, all he wanted was the death of the human race. Toguro was cool and all, but I never felt the anxiety of “what happens next?” like I did in the Sensui saga.
agreed...sensui just didn't connect with yusuke enough for me..toguro did...sensui has more beef with koenma if anything...toguro and yusuke seem more like characters destined to fight cause their so similar
I agree. Sakyo was the mastermind behind every major conflict in the show that had doomsday implications and he mentally broke Sensui-this would serve to accelerate Sakyo’s plans for bringing down the barrier between worlds. Sakyo succeeded in every front aside from getting richer. Toguro, Sensui, and Yomi are the most iconic. But Sakyo was ultimately the most threatening, and the least redeemable.
Biggest villain 1 TOGURO 2 Sensui 3 Sakio 4 Elder Toguro 5 Yomi 6 Makuro 7 4 Saint Beast especially the leader 8 Rando 9 Bui (my top 4 villains and best design) 10 Terukani (to be honest he would be higer...) I remember his arch and how fucked up he was so much. Sensui was good, really good but Toguro is GREAT, The most memorable, best arch, hands down its Toguro
I love yu yu hakusho, it's definitely my all time favorite anime, the character development was just amazing, I was hooked from the first episode, in my opinion I believe Sensui was the best villain in the series, Toguro was great and also a favorite character of mine but I personally see him as more of an antagonist than an actual villain, although I can see why a lot of people say he is the best villain in the series
Togoru hit home, but Sensui was a bit corny to me. Like the seven personalities sped up his training to obtain the sacred energy, but a lot of it was lack of execution. I think a lot of it has to do with screen time. We had Togoru for before and during the Dark Tournament to develop, yet Sensui is led up to as soon as he's introduced.
I think you misunderstood sensui. He’s intentionally “corny” and kid-like when he’s in any personality that’s not sensui/shinobu, that’s the point. It’s to give a sense of isn’t how broken of a person he is after all he’s been through. His motivations are left intentionally vague because it fits in line with the character and the atmosphere of chapter black. I also think his send off is incredible especially for how otherwise mediocre the conclusion of the arc were. Raizen yusuke and sensui’s finale were some of the best moments in the series.
I honestly didn't mind the ending of Yu Yu Hakusho. Would I have liked to see an all out Demon War that also involved Spirit World and Earth? Hell yeah! But, I still liked what we got in the end, even if it was rushed. To me personally, the last arc was all about Yusuke finally coming into his own and finding peace in his own violent way. He averted a war by creating a tournament system to choose the Demon King, and he got to enjoy himself while fighting Yomi. Yomi could have been this nasty mastermind villain who wanted to take over all of creation, but I think it's cool that he's basically Yusuke's rival now. Yusuke spent all of his time fighting because he was either pissed off and angry, or because he had to save the world. By the end of the story, he was fighting for what he wanted, which is probably why he was smiling the whole damn time. He figured himself out, and now he can find a challenge whenever he feels like while still kicking it with his loved ones. "You can't end a party without someone on the floor." In regards to who I think is the best villain, I'd say that Toguro is the best, Sensui is the coolest, and Yomi is that one awesome villain who manages to get something akin to a happy ending.
I would say Toguro was the best, he showed our hero how far he still had to go to be truly strong and the best. Toguro's relationship with Geni Kai was great as well, she was the strong carrying mother who pushed our hero, while Tuguro could be the strong, cold father, who said you want my love and respect the show me your stronger than me and beat me at my best.
We've been at this for years, it's between Toguro and Sensui. my personal oppinion is Toguro due to him being an eternal mystery and a puzzle till the very end even as he goes to hell. he never really explained himself. Sensui was also really good but as you guys say in the video, the way he was executed. they sort of compressed the major revelations about him at the battle with Yusuke. while Toguro we knew at least he was with Genkai before the final fight. toguro was executed much better. hard to explain the whole thing in a comment really.
Younger Toguro was a complete badass, every time he was on screen you could see how much stronger he was than everyone, that makes him imposing and one of the coolest villians. (Just finished dark tournament arc, don’t know anything abt the future villians)
Thats why i really like Qaaman bc it feels like he reads my mind. Sensui did have a great motive and was a great antagonist in theory but how personal it got w Toguro and the execution of the character makes me say Toguro
Sensui by far. Unlike other villains, who just had standard selfish motives, Sensui actually believed in something. He may not have been right, but he fought for something other than his own advancement. He's the best villain, not just in Yuyu Hakusho, but maybe in all anime.
There are atleast 20 villains better than or as good as Griffith, char, johan, meruem, chrollo, kyouko, funny valentine, pouf, shishio, ganishka, Shigaraki, fydor, kira, enrico, diavolo, gendo, lil slugger , kotomene kirei, madara(equal), lady eboshi
I like Yomi, but he's got nothing on Toguro or Sensui. Between those two, I can't decide. They are very similar but also different in such unique ways. I give it to Toguro because he antagonized Yusuke in more ways than Sensui (killed Genkai, forced him to enter the tournament, "killed" Kuwabara right in front of him, threatened to kill Keiko...) But I do think Chapter Black is a better arc than the Dark Tournament arc
Yeah, Sensui was Sakyo if you gave him the physical threat and imposing power of Toguro with his own blend of manipulative nihilism....until it’s revealed that he’s actually one of 7 others- 4 of which remain in the background. The other two being a monstrous brute with a foul mouth and the other being Sensui except more realistically affable with his own depths- a villain who’s identity is played like hot potato instead of a character with a defined personality from beginning to end. He’s kinda a better written Majin Buu in that regard.
I used to fucking love this show. Ill never forget the early 2000s when i was beyond obsessed with dbz. Yu yu hakusho is the only other show that rivaled dbz in my eyes
If we're debating over the complexities of the characters' backstories and motivations, then it's between Toguro and Sensui. However, if we factor in every other element that makes a shonen villain badass (e.g. character designs, transformations, action scenes, on-screen presence, OST, etc.), then Toguro is #1, and it's not even close. This dude could fuck someone up with his index finger and literally say, "I used 0.12256% of my power" while wearing shades underneath a motorcycle helmet indoors. You just can't beat that.
I just re watched it recently and I didn't really considered yomi much of a villain, more of just a powerful rival to fight. Sensui was a really cool idea, but his whole open the demon world just to die there in the end was gives toguru was just my favorite, he had a good grudge, he had a cool code and way to intimidating then into entering the tournament, and I just think he is the most memorable at the end of the day
If we’re talking about “best” villain; I would lean toward Sensui over Toguro because he was more “evil” in my opinion. Yomi in my opinion shouldn’t even qualify; that former general of Yomi’s army was more evil. Yomi might not even be #2, Mukuro sacrificing demons to be slaughtered by Hiei to me makes her #2. The only thing that was remotely villainous was a monk telling Yusuke that he was plotting to conquer the human world. If however we were talking about who’s actually a “pure evil villain” it would have to be 1. Dr. Ichigaki 2. Toguro (Elder) 3. Rando-99 as far as individuals who were true sadists.
Laughing stock media doesn’t get the attention he deserves. Top notch entertainment each and every time he uploads. Definitely one of my favorite content creators. Let’s give this dude some likes and comments!
For all of you asking, "Why was Sensui the most complex?", Did you not pay attention to the detail that was put into his character, or the fact he is a 1 man party (7 personalities ring a bell)? Toguro was a coward seeking power, abandoning his humanity for strength, and only cared about himself, up the the very end. Yomi, well...... I still want to know who beat him in the tournament, my guess is probably Kurama!
I know this video is a year old but I think Sakyo is the best villain in the series. When you think about it he's the main reason for the dark tournament and Sensui turning out crazy; leading up to the chapter black arc.
I just finished rewatching the series a few months back, could not follow it consistently on TV back then because my sister's drama show was on the same time slot. It only got me interested when it was leading up to the dark tournament arc. It did not age well IMO and it was the generic formula where the main protagonist was always the go-to guy to save the day. Yusuke earned Hiei and Kurama's respect in a short span of time where to me he needed to prove it even more, felt like a rushed development. Still an awesome anime though, I'll never forget the touching scene where Toguro and Genkai said their final goodbyes.
My favorite parts of Toguro and Sensui are the ways in which they are dark reflections of Yusuke. Toguro is Yusuke if he truly gives in to his emotional repression and abandons all else in the pursuit of strength and combat. Sensui is Yusuke if he succumbs to the all of the evil in the world that he’s come to witness.
I love all of them, however I'm gonna give love to my boy Yomi. He was naive during his youth just like the 2 other villains, Korama tried to kill him when he's still weak but he never plotted a revenge against him and instead he saw him as a friend in the end. He found a new respect for Yusuke specially during their fight and he found his peace when his son was born. I think some of the things Toguro and Sensui did fell into cliche bad guys act but Yomi is very calculative and honorable
I would say Toguro is the best YYH villain because he had a personal connection with Genkai and Yusuke. Sensui was cool but I think he really suffered from anime power creep and raising of the stakes to the point of things just getting a bit ridiculous.
Its a very hard decision for me but probably Sensui best arc I love the fact that he personifies what a possibility could be if Yusuke goes down a darker path as he is a former Spirit Detective. I also love Yomi but I think the problem is that the Demon Tournament arc was very brief and thus Yomi doesn’t feel too fleshed out. Younger Toguro is understandably a lot of people’s favorite and without a doubt one of the best, main reason because the Dark Tournament was the longest arc Toguro got got fleshed out and delivery in execution was the best and I can’t help but get the same vibe to his relationship with Yusuke VERY identical to that or Akuma to Ryu in Street Fighter with Genkai being Gouken I also give props to Toguro’s team as well, Elder Toguro is no doubt possibly the most evil villain in YYH unlike his brother he had no honor was the most sadistic character in the entire series and persistent, Karasu was also very compelling I enjoyed his fixation to Kurama and his twisted way of showing admiration to something by sadistically destroying it, Bui was also interesting he was mysterious and didn’t come off as a villain both he and Karasu are tragic characters forced to fight under the Toguro’s as Elder Toguro reveals. Also liked Sakyo he was also very interesting he doesn’t come off as much at first just a corrupt wealthy gambler until he reveals his agenda to his victims at the Dark Tournament before having Toguro kill them truly a troubled sociopathic character. I also enjoyed your share of 4 Saint Beasts, Rando, the teachers at Yusuke and Kuwabara’s High School but lets be honest they were appetizers to the series until Toguro came to the picture even so they helped in getting us hooked into the series and we remember them well for it.
The best antagonist should theoretically be the one who is not only competent at presenting a challenge to the hero, but also attacks the hero's goals and principles. For example, the Joker is great against Batman, because Batman is all about taming Gotham so that people can live safely, and the Joker is chaos and random murder. I figure Yusuke is all about having the freedom to do as you please and looking after your friends, and nobody challenged both like the younger Toguro. That said, my FAVORITE villain would be Lord Yomi, but because he is the villain whose perspective I can see the best.
