In this video, we compare the tone of three different years of Celestion Vintage 30 speakers - 2001, 2006, and 2010. We put each speaker through its paces to see if we can find the "holy grail" of guitar tone. We'll take a detailed look at each speaker's frequency response, high-frequency edginess, Three dimensional sound, and overall sound quality to help you determine which one is the best fit for your setup. Don't miss out on this in-depth comparison to help you achieve the ultimate guitar tone! BTW mesa cabs are built like tanks.

as a user of 2 of the 3 cabs in this video, i can't tell the difference between any of them. but i love that people can. glad you were able to make a fun video comparison with them.

Great video! For anyone looking, its not just 2001 - you can go 2001 to 2003, they are all as good as each other. 2004 there was a noticeable change.

I just picked up a Mesa traditional 4x12 with V30 date codes April, 2000. Let me attest that the hype is 100% real!! Massive bass response, smooth mids, no sharp spiky trebles. Huge 3D tone. Surprisingly it has some greenback vibes to it! Play it with a rectifier or a Marshall super lead…it’s holy grail tones! I’ve heard tons of cabs with v30s in them and they’ve all had that fizzy top end and harsh upper mid thing everyone complains about. Not these. If you can find any V30s from 98-2001 those are the golden years! The moment I heard cab 3 I knew that was the 2001. Crazy how when you hear it, you just know that’s the “it factor.” 🤘🤘 Great video!

I have a 2001 Bogner oversized open-back 2X12 with V30's that goes with my Ecstasy 101b head...love it. Will never part with it. It's going to the grave with me...😝 On my speakers all the cabs in context sound very close to my ear, but cab 3 sounds the most lively.

One of your best yet, and all your content is great. I would like to point out that Nolly has never backed up his claim for the “golden era” with audio examples, therefore you’ve done the heavy lifting for the hype he has created. Good work my man.

1 & 3 had much more vibe. Though, I’ve made the mistake of having a bad sounding amp & trying to improve it with a speaker. Gotta have both...

Being a pianist first in my career, and now being a engineer semi professional, the world of guitars is wild and overwhelming. Luckily my co engineer and best friend has our studio handled there, but videos like these are fascinating. Just goes to show no matter how much you think you know, there is so much more to learn.

I've got 2 of the oversized Randall Warhead 4x12 cabs from 2000 I believe, (the Dimebag sig cabs) they're loaded with V30's and they have the clear dust cap, so I believe them to be in the 'holy grail' era of V30's. I will say they sound amazing and have won tone tests against mesa OS cabs and vintage Marshall cabs. Cool video!

The third one really is the best. The first one is also cool, but the second one is definetly the worst both solo and in the mix. I was wondering, what method do you use for creating IRs? From the video I think that you are sending a single white/pink noise impulse to the cab? How does that method compare to the 20Hz-20kHz sweep?

Cab 3 was the best sounding to my ears, the low end was beautiful and suited the song and the mix great. Cab 1 was also amazing but liked it a little less in the mix, like the midrange wasn´t as present as in 3. Not really stoked about cab 2, sounded kinda disconnected from the mix on it's own, although I guess it could be EQ´d to a similar result. Great video man, V30 shootouts are always a ton of fun

I owned a Mesa 4x12 covered in red suede I bought used in,..oh,...'99 or '00. Was previously owned by one of the guitar players in Bad Religion. I gigged with it for about a year but ended up selling because I was going through a period where I was buying and selling new amps and cabs like a fiend. Wish I still had that one -- I do still own a Bogner oversized 2x12 I bought new in '01 with the v30s. I've had a pair of Scumback speakers in it forever that I love but still have those original v30s. Cab3 (especially when you listened on it's own) is more mid-forward than 1 and 2. Honestly, in context they all sounded good and would work in a mix.

Now that you've done this video and your ears are dialed in to the V30s...I'd love to get your take on the Marshall G12 Vintage speakers that come in the AV and BV cabs against the V30. Thanks for this video, it was great.

Immediately after listening: Prefer cab 3, then 1. 3 is slightly more... forward? Cuts through better? But 1 is still very balanced. Cab 2, hmm... something odd going on there. The second chord sounds great, but the first chord has a weird resonance. Kinda fatigued my ears in the mix. After results: Well whaddaya know!

If these were volume matched (and I am assuming that they are) then I really liked 1 and 3. I liked 1 just slightly over 3, but pretty close. 2 just didn't have the magic that the others had.

I liked the 3rd cab as well, liked it better than the IR version too. Just seemed to sit better in the mix. Cab 2 almost had a muffled sound, and oddly the low end was mushy sounding to me. The palm mutes were particularly featured in cab 2 in a bad way. Cab 1 was my second favorite and sat well in the mix too. So I guess it went 2001, 2006, and 2010 for me. In fact however, having the option means I would pretty much NEVER use cab 2 for anything.

2 sounds totally different. 1 and 3 are close, but 3 sounded a bit brighter, in a good way. (1 sounds a bit muffled when A/B ing). But you destroyed the wire-ties magic... Now your test is worth nothing! ;-) ha ha ha

This whole guitar gear obsession is turning into a religion, especially among younger youtube guitarists, as it seems. I wonder how the old folks managed to sound great, in times where one had 'A' guitar and 'An' amp, and no such thing as a holy grail even existed! Being a little older myself I can only shake my head at those millennial guitarists, living in places that look like guitar stores, with hundreds of guitars hanging on the wall, constantly searching for "THE" sound, which usually equates to something vintage and used, as if the new stuff was inherently inferior (well, of course the ubiquitous Universal Audio OX being the exception, that's the piece of gear that every YT guitarist seems to own). Can't the young folks create something great for themselves, instead lusting for the old stuff, as if owning vintage gear is the only way to make you a legit guitar player? The sheer number of channels constantly talking about vintage gear and how owning something vintage is the greatest thing ever speaks for itself.
