The Best Walk In St.John's is a Scenic Coastal Gem (And it Even Finishes at a Brewery!)

It's hard to believe you're still in St.John's on this coastal walk which takes in Signal Hill, Cabot Tower and the secluded harbour settlement of Quidi Vidi, never mind the breathtaking views back over the city and a beer at the end of the trail to celebrate. The sun even came out for us on this memorable day to one of our favourite places anywhere. Come with us and enjoy the video :)

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for RU-vid Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I thought for a while I was young again and climbing signal Hill. I dreamed again of the sun rise as I braved the morning chill. I climbed with you and I felt the chill as I breathed the ocean air and sat on the rocks beside you as you settled in a chair. Thanks for the climb, I loved it as memories crowded my mind. Thanks for it allI, I enjoyed the beer. …ice berg is my favourite leven…. you made my day cause I can’t do it now,fot now I’ve reached 87😂. Lol just a little poem to serenade you this morning wherever you are at this time. Needless to say, I loved the walk.

Every time you see a travel show or brochure concerning Canada, it is always centred on Toronto, Montreal or the Rockies. The Atlantic provinces are always under-represented so well done for making such a great series of videos. The fact that people hardly ever mention the Atlantic coast makes it very appealing for a visit soon.

Beautiful place! I'm from Ireland and it reminds me very much of the west coast with the craggy cliffs and headlands and the magnificent North Atlantic rolling in or thundering in depending on the weather. And I'm sure Steve, it also reminds you of the western isles of Scotland...on a sunny day of course which are, as you are well aware, just as rare over this side of the pond as they are in Newfoundland! I also find it amazing that the Newfies who are of Irish descent still retain a strong Irish accent (with a slight North American twang) 200 years or so since their ancestors first landed there! It shows how remote the place is from the North American mainland. Great scenery and walks, very friendly locals, good food, drink with great fiddle music and craic to be had in the many pubs there. A home from home on the other side of the Atlantic eh? Definitely on my bucket list of places to visit.

Those pairs of red chairs can be found right across the Trans Canada Trail system. They were placed at spots that offer an exceptionally beautiful viewing point, inviting the hiker to take a peaceful little rest and just soak in the scenic view! The chairs were installed by the Government of Canada in 2017 as part of the Canada Sesquicentennial Celebrations (150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada as a nation on July 1, 1867). You've made three absolutely stellar videos of the walks around my beautiful city, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and I just wanted to thank you for them! ❤🇨🇦❤

Hello Steve, another nice video, thank you. Jigging is a fishing technique when you drop your line (most of the time a hand line) and haul it back a few inches then drop it again repeatedly. Usually, you use a lure such as a red/orange or yellow spoon to attract the fish. I did a lot of jigging through ice holes in Baffin Island for arctic char. So they must have had a fishing contest, and you should have entered!

The Fluvarium is a place where you can see under the river, and the activities that happen in the underwater environment. The steps and handrail on the East Coast Trail look really well maintained. Quidi Vidi looks like a gorgeous little town I'd love to visit.

Interestingly, Quidi Vidi (which is typically pronounced Kiddy Viddy) is not a town but a neighbourhood in St. John's 🙂. It is very quaint and only a 10 minute car ride from the centre of the city.

I was sitting in front of my computer getting exhausted watching you two walking up Signal Hill. I have done that a couple of times and it is quite the hike. It is very common to have a large fog bank sitting just offshore waiting to roll in as soon as the sun begins to set. I'm so glad that you managed to get some "good" weather during your trip. Looking forward to the next instalment. Another stellar video Steve & Alicja.

Another great video, lovely scenic views of the harbour, town and surrounding countryside. I really enjoy your escapades as you keep everything realistic and down to earth, in a way that us mere mortals can appreciate, keep it up and continue entertaining us😊

Thanks so much for posting this video. I just had my hip replaced and I needed something to strive for. I don’t know if I will ever get to St John’s, but I will get somewhere that challenges me. You and Alicja have given me the encouragement I needed. Thanks again.

I think that fog is when visibility is less that 50m (or something similar) and mist is when the visibility is greater than whatever the threshold is.

visibility of less than 1 km is fog, greater than 1 km is mist…seems pedantic, but meteorologists are that way
