I'm a Radio idiot - just came here to make a cheap purchase. This is a great breakdown and the spreadsheet of the cost vs. quality is super useful. Thanks for doing the consumer reports for us all
Back in 2009 Kentucky was hit by a massive ice storm. And nobody had a way to charge their cellphones. I turned my walkie talkie on spanning and heard a guy talking about he had a generator and would be happy to charge cell phones. They definitely have a place for shtf.
Oxbow Renegade 2.0, definitely. Sometimes I wish I didn't gravitate towards expensive gear, but in this case it happened before I knew the prices of each one. Have noticed that with electronic gear, you usually get what what you pay for. Want the best, overall? Open up your wallet after hitting the ATM machine. Also, very generous of you to do this Giveaway. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and good luck with the giveaway! Yeah, you defintely do get what you pay for. It was brought to my attention after the video that Oxbow also is freeze proff and compatibile with GoPros so it should have done a little better in overall score. It is truly a very nice radio.
Your spreadsheets rock! I do consider myself a bit of a radio nerd, yet I’m also aware that my knowledge is virtually nothing compared to some real radio enthusiasts! Radio is super important. I earned my ham license a few years ago and have only looked at ham-band radios… never even learned about these FRS options. They seem quite capable and awesome considering the lack of needing a license! This video is fantastic. Can’t ask for more of a quality test! The Rocky Talkie would definitely interest me but honestly these all have their perfect audiences.
Thanks DDD! Yeah, radios are extremely important! Are you planning to use them to communicate with your family in a grid down situation? Your setup might deserve a video too lol. Yeah the performance of the 2w FRS radios defintely exceeded my expectations and I've seen other line of site tests with these radios and they hit over 20 miles.
@@UrbanSurvivor I do have a radio video scheduled for Aug 12! I think I’m 12 weeks ahead with uploads lol… it can be hard at times to not just make videos public but I like having the cushion of time in case of emergency (such as when my dog and I were attacked by another dog last weekend and I ended up getting the tip of my pinky nearly bitten off and had to get my dog stitched up). It happens! The backlog of videos helps, though. My setup basically consists of just a couple BF-F8HP radios with a decent amount of accessories. I’ve wanted the Alinco DR-735T as a base-station setup for a while, so that may happen but honestly I’m impressed with what can be done with a couple of Baofengs with the right knowledge and accessories!
@@DontDoDaylight Thats awsome you have so many videos on deck ready to go! Been forgetting to ask if you might have an interest in reviewing the NVG-G1 night vision bino? goodnitegearshop.com/products/nvg-g1-night-vision-binoculars-wildgameplus Sorry to hear about you and your dog! Thats terrible. Do you carry pepper spray? I keep some on my keychain for events like this lol. Anyways I'm looking forward to seeing your radio video! Your knowledge far exceeds mine in this dept...
Damn, dude! That was a very useful review and comparison! The Rocky Talkies, sure seems to be the best overall package, but that price... The Retevis RT45P or BTECH FRS-A1 might be the best compromise for me and maybe the best bang for your buck. Thanks for your hard work and for the great giveaway. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed the video! This is the new format you'll see in most videos moving forward on the channel! Good luck on the giveaway and thank you for watching and entering. Would defintely recommend the Retevis RT45P or BTECH FRS-A1 for smaller radio budgets.
Each Cobra RX680 has a covered micro usb port on the side that can be used to charge individually. The cradle isn't the only way to charge, and therefore the included cradle is actually a benefit.
Yeah I was thinking about testing the standby times against manufacturers claims but couldnt come up with a decent testing method but it would be cool to do something like that in the future. Thanks for watching.
there is a real rugged radio company thay sell real no thrills meaning 120 none privet channels privet channels lock two radios together so thay only talk to each other. and no budy else.
Midland GXT walkie-talkies are the best on the market. Given the fact that they have a 36 mile range with line of sight, and in the woods, or in the city, you can get between 5 and 10 miles. These are the only radios that I trust to take Hunting with me when I go to Colorado in the back mountains.
what kind of midland gxt are you using? i am just a noob that wants a direct contact thru radio while we are travelling me and my friend in a convoy on the highway...
@@tacticalsweater5119 yes I am, lol it depends on the buildings, businesses, residential areas, along with other things. If I was in downtown Dallas, I would completely agree with you, but given the fact that I live in the panhandle of Texas, I get that range with these radios.
sorry pal 36 miles you need a 35 dollar license to do that as you are talking more than that the license is 35 dollars for ten years I am still good for 7 years and I am working on my ham license again.
@@donalderickson-si8ww not true 😂 do your research before posting stupid comments! Look up the walkie-talkies and I am talking about and you will see what I mean.
Looking to get some walking talkies and came across your video. Thank you for making it and I am sold on the Retevis the fact that it has the option to run on 3 AA batteries is
This is the one thing my kit is missing. A good 2 way radio. Thanks for the info. Personally, I’d go with the Rocky Talkie. Seems to be the best bang for the buck.
Me and my off-road buddies been looking to getting some walkie talkies -- thanks for the vid and spreadsheet! I'm liking the rocky talkie but the retevis might take care of everything we need. 🤙
The retevis seems like the best! Highest IP rating, versatile as you can use two power sources, good price point and is one of the longest range walkie-talkie out of the group.
The Rocky would be a great fit. Just wouldn't be able to afford it. So appreciate the review of all of these and showing us the affordable ones that may of not been our first choice but still some good WT.
I like the oxbow renagade 2.0 is my fave.. But I like the small size of the moico or however it's spelled... you should do one on gmrs radios that come in blister packs... I can't really find anything online that showcases all the different kinds of gmrs styled radio I like gmrs cuz the license easy (and cheaper now).. Plus that 5 watt really helps get you out there.. I tend to look for something that can travel about 5 miles from handy talky to Handy talky... something that's kid friendly... yeah they have the baofeng pro and other types like that for gmrs radios that are awesome but they cost too much and I've always found the blister pack gmrs radios to be a better value especially when most of them come with c-type charging or micro charging which is a bonus to me at least... anyways I'm a ham radio operator but it's alway nice to have a set of frs radios (don't have any yet).. Thanks for your time and the video 😎👍💯
It was brought to my attention by Oxbow after publishing the video that the renegade is freeze proof and also compatible with go pro mounting brackets. They probably should have scored a little better.
and you will still have a radio that will die at a mile range thay all have the same board in side that is how all F R S radio's talk to each other under F C C rules and radio will out talk yours every day.
That’s a great video. Excellent job showing how these stack up. I’m impressed with the range these are able to get. I agree the Rocky Talkie overall seems the best. Anyone offering a micro usb port at this point is shameless. Regarding other tests, it would be great to see a drone comparison. Also, magnified monoculars.
Glad you enjoyed the video! This is going to be the format moving forward for most of the videos on the channel. Agreed, was really impressed by the range they got. Great video ideas! Are you thinking about monoculars with video recording capabilities? I am also working on a thermal monocular comparison at the moment.
@@UrbanSurvivor I was thinking just a small handheld durable monocular with good glass, some magnification, and a decent price. Recording and thermal are very cool features as well. Speaking of recording, a camera review would be cool too. Something I need at the moment and am overwhelmed by everything out there. I think there are content creators who only focus on that so not sure if that would interest you or not, but if you make it I will watch it
Great review bro. You def put in a lot of time. I want a good walkie talkie for cruises and international travel. I golf and want to stay in contact with my family when I don't have cell service. Could the walkie talkie be a good option for the middle east?
Awesome content! I am a radio guy. This video and table helped solidify our choice for an FRS only device (when we don't want to ID with our various licenses). Thank you so very much. (We did use your affiliate link.)
I like having battery options. Like AA batteries. Because, if SHTF and all the power went out, and you really only need it for short range, idk. Be good to have at least one that you don’t have to charge up.
Excellent description, I don't know which radio is better for me, Whay can you suggest me? .Im looking for cycling activities with my partner that she always stays 3 miles behind with rockies and trees, what do you can advice me? . Regards in advance :)
Very good comparison....for design and overall I go for Rocky Talkie ...thanks to these reviews consumers can make better choices thank you very much!!
Great video. 👍 That's long time I had some walkie talkies 😃 but had a lot of fun with that, even that was some crap ones. I am impressed by abilities of some of these. I like high quality stuff, so rather buy one great thing, instead of many useless ones (dont know if my collections will 100% agree with that 😃. So my favorite is Rocky Talkie, great distance, runtine and easy to use. Thanks and take care 🤟
Thank you! This is the new format you'll be seeing for most of my videos moving forwards! Yeah walkies talkies are fun and they are a gret emergency tool too! My parents live close enough by for me to communicate with them with most of these radios too. Great choice on the Rocky Talkie!
every radio talked about to day all have the same board in side that is becouse that is the way the F C C wanted it to be you cant juice it up change the antenna thay are all the same name changes radio inners don't change.
Been looking for something like this foe a while! The rocky talky is probably my pick. I've been wanting one to add to my range kit when I'm out with buddies and out hiking.
I wished every product review would have a spreadsheet rating and a SWOT with short, straight to the point comments without the usual long blabla bullshit. Excellent video review!!
I do lawn care on large properties and I’m looking at getting some with ear pieces can you please help me find the right ones? We run loud equipment and want some you can her the person replying and not the motor of equipment. The farthest apart we’ll be I couple thousand feet away from each other not site are 12-20 acres in total with lots of apartment buildings. Is there any one the you think I should try? Trying to get some less expensive one for testing
i like the rocky talkie except for their way of handling squelch tones ,if your with a group that just changed to ch.16 /60 how do you do that math when your driving, or walking and i'm not finding the retivis or cobra on amzn
Oxbow is very nice. Great review and all some great walkies. Honestly was hard to choose. So I just kinda picked the first one that came to mind while typing. Lol
Wow that spreadsheet is just awesome! Thank you so much for sharing it for free, saves us so much time while shopping. For my needs, the Retevis ones are probably going to be the ones I end up buying. They seem robust and have access to two sources of power which can come in handy sometimes! Plus they are actually raelly not expensive
Glad the spreadsheet was helpful to you! Yeah i think Retevis would probably get the job done for most people and its at a price most of us would probably be more comfortable spending!
Might be a daft question but do they talk to each other or do I have to buy a pair of same ones and can you buy 3 or 4 of them so they all communicate? Thanks
Thanks for the reviews. I like the Retcevis. Have used Motorola and cheap knockoffs at work. Looking to buy a pair of the Retcevis for camping and travel.
Hey man i got a question, i want to get some walkie talkies for me and my friend to just goof around with for when we meetup. I want to get some for Christmas, what would you recommend? I’m steering towards one thats on the shorter cheaper side, oh and also want the voice quality to be kinda scuffed so we can goof around with it
Yes they can all talk to eachother as long as they are set to the same channel. They all have 1-22 FRS channels which would work. Some of the models also have additional channels as well.
Yeah Retevis makes some great quality budget friendly radios! They really impressed me. And Cobra was impressive too! Another fantastic option under $100.
I have to ask, why with all the modern technology now days, why don't these radios use Bluetooth so you can link to ear buds? Ear buds have become so popular now days. For myself, I work in heavy equipment and its loud. I wear noise canceling ear buds all day and listen to music, but we also need to contact truck drivers on radios... it would be nice if I could hear my radio through the ear buds..
