The Best Way to Attach Wood to Concrete and Brick - QUICK & EASY 

Hello there, thanks for the info on the vid. I would like to use these concrete screws to secure a wooden floor directly to concrete floor underneath. But I would like to recess the screws and then cap the screws with a dowel. What do you recommend. Do I need a drill depth gauge and certain type of drill bit? Thanks

yeah masonry NOT concrete...its different stuff you numpty. Glad you call your site a DIYer...

Masonry is NOT concrete. This would work in masonry like 'it says on the tin'! but would have problems with high gravel saturated concrete. You use bolts set in the concrete using epoxy (Simpsons or sim to attain code compliance) to attach wood. These are called anchor bolts ...'says on the tin....'

If you drill a hole into brick or concrete and the screw doesnt hold or a bit loose, you can use a rawl plug as well with the masonry screw for better grip.

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT mate, it’ll be a rip down and rebuild properly. 😂😂 The extension, that the person before us built, is pulling slowly away from the house, as he didn’t put any foundations down. There was a wooden lean to, which he used as a frame for the extension. There is one part where the bricks are just stacked on top of each other… lol

I normally go every other block for general areas ie bedroom walls hallways but for heavy traffic areas where radiators / tiles are going etc you could add a few more. The stixall is great for a proper job too. Perhaps over kill but it’s piece of mind! Like you I’m not a professional but can do most things. I find this a lot easier to attach boards as I hate messing with adhesive. Plus great way to use up all that roofing batten. Good luck with the build.

Hi Peter, you can use these in aerated concrete blocks just fine. You just have to make sure you've pilot drilled past the depth of the screw otherwise if it bottoms out it'll strip. Also, if you forget to pilot the screw still goes in but it'll just act like a drill bit instead of cutting a thread so don't forget 😆Personally I've used the 6mm ones in lightweight blocks to fix my window and door strapping. The one I showed in this video is the bigger type. They do them in Screwfix > easydrive tx countersunk concrete screws 6mm

They exist for diy'ers that don't know any better 😂 I think the slimmest screw that exists is 5mm so I suppose it all depends on the application

Not masonry screws no, they are self tapping, you can't get any that are self drilling

I've had quite a few frame fixings snap where as masonry screws will more likely strip the hole before snapping (then either use a longer screw or rawl plugs can help you out). It's an absolute pain hitting in frame fixings to begin with, the plug can sometimes bend. Frame fixings do have a tapered head which is better for countersinking, not all masonry screws have a fully tapered head so it leaves the screw a little more proud depending on what material you're going into. I used masonry screws for my aluminium windows, found fully tapered ones for that but had to use a different masonry screw for one which left it slightly proud.

How thick is your wood?

The one I used in the video would be overkill but you can get smaller diameter masonry screws which would work well for fixing skirting 👍

You mean for putting the actual screw in? You could probably do it with a socket wrench

Old fashioned bit and brace will give you all the torque you need.

The minimum embedded depth on masonry screws is 30mm and you should really drill 10mm past that. If you don't do this they won't hold.

I don't see why they wouldn't work, if you can drill a hole in the material with a hammer drill without it breaking then I'm sure it'll hold a masonry screws. Probably not quite as strong though

Some people want 100% power independence no matter what the cost....others are probably more pragmatic and base things on cost & payback period. In your position I can see the value in putting in infrastructure now whilst it is relatively easy to do because in the near future we will all have to live in zero carbon homes. PS When electric cars become more affordable it should be possible to use them to store some surplus solar energy for later use in the house. Racks of storage batteries are expensive (Tesla Powerwall?) and take up a lot of space....why not use the EV sitting in the garage for some of that?

@@Sean006 I wouldn't say that the panels were particularly cost effective, we won't be making money off them and it will take an absolute age to recoup the outlay through energy saving costs. We might look into batteries later if costs come down but at the moment everything is just going up hey!
