The Best Way to Cut Holes on Curve Surface in Blender (Quick Blender Tips)

I often got asked what is the best way to cut holes on curve surface in Blender. I was fascinated by the Boolean modifier when I started learning blender, but It never works out for me when I modeling.
After a year of learning modeling in Blender, I found we can not only bevel the edge in Blender, we can also bevel a vertice/a point in Blender. Blender 2.9 has made cut holes on curve surface so much easier.

Nice technique. Boolean is much more easier but this one look way more better :) Thank you!

This indeed is a great technique for making circular cuts on a curved surface but i would like to mention one thing that while using loop tools for creating circles on curved surface , unchecking the flatten option is the best thing to do otherwise the circle you make will be flat i.e it will not follow the curvature present on the surface , looking forward for more content xiongdi❤

This is preference. Sometimes a situation will call for flatten despite the surface being curved. Sometimes I want my sphere to have a hole and I want the base of the hole to be flat versus curved.

I have no loop tools when I right click on the diamond. There is nothing above "Vertex Context Menu". I guess its back to Boolean for this boy

But you have some deformation around hole, is it ok?

I realized that although you can make nice holes whith this method, but this also results some shading issues caused by minor deformations around the hole (and that is so even if i do some preparations such as inset, joining vertices etc). My method to partially avoid this is: 1.: the mesh must contain square-like faces (instead of a horizontally stretched rectangles). That means in case of a 1 meter x 2 meter cylinder with 32 vertices, that you must make 10 horizontal loops. 2.: you must make a bevel wich is almost a circle (instead a concave shaped bevel). You can achieve this if you set the shape of the bevel to 0.08. And the loop tool comes only after it. The end of this method is the same (inset, joining the vertices, subD, shade smooth). Unfortunately my method doesn't give perfect result either, but the final result is smoother, with less shading issues.

Thank you for explaining the details of this clever technique. I am a new blender user and tried to punch a precise hole through a cylinder with knife project and "punchit" add-on. I hope to use your method for a much cleaner geometry.

This is great and works perfectly for a circle. I’m guessing there isn’t a good solution for making any random shape? I have a model with some other surfaces pushed through it so I could run a Boolean but it totally messes up the mesh
@WenboZhao
@WenboZhao 2 года назад
you can still use boolean tool to cut, then retopo the mesh using some third party addon like " Quad remeshier"

Thank you. Yeah, I'm certainly going to be adding this method to my tool box. Using a shrinkwrap modifier against a clean duplicate of the cylinder also works to heal the effects of a flattened loop-tool circle, and the scaling from the center vert. Although, it may be necessary to create a vertex group that covers not just the circle to be cut, but some of the verts in the surrounding area. subscribing 👍

I understand what you are going for here, but what if you want to do it in a non-destructive way, then you need the Boolean modifier, in that case this won't work, besides even with the Boolean modifier, after you apply it you can always connect the vertices, as long as there is good topology then I don't see the problem with using the Boolean modifier.
@skyz3ra
@skyz3ra 2 года назад
isnt the boolean way more destructive ? how do you even use subdiv with booleans ? this technique looks actually clean

Booleans are bad and lazy and cause a whole host of geo problems... its kinda ok for concepting stuff I guess.. but this is much better for geo!

Thank! Do you think you could possibly do one on reasons why using boolean to cut an object evenly in half doesn’t always work
@WenboZhao

Most of the time is becuase of not enough geometry of your mesh, we usually dont want to add too much in order to work efficently in the computer. using sub surf modifier does not very helpful either. So I would recommend to use this way to cut a hole

Interesting, I have seen similar before by projecting a Circle on the the surface. So fundamentally we need to get a Circle onto the surface of our Cylinder, at the correct position and scale, and the vertices of those circle needs to be close to the some of the vertices on the originating mesh. Then we ned to ensure that all our circle vertices are connected into nearby original mesh vertices to avoid N-Gons etc. Still pretty tricky to retain symmetry, avoid deformation of the original mesh. And I do not see any realistic method to resize after the operation. But its understood to be the correct way to retain correct geometry, that Booleans mess up. Thanks also for the tip on the Mesh Circle tool Add On.

you used Shift+ctrl+b and not just ctrl+b on the vertex right ? and if you refer to the numpad you need a real keyboard with the numbers on the right(cant do ctrl + 1 on a laptop)

For me the problem arises when I've to create the hole, bevel it and then subdivide it. Those vertices get grouped and it doesn't look good with subdivision. You have any workaround for this?
@WenboZhao
@WenboZhao 3 года назад
did you conect the vertices after beveled the hole as what this video is showing? if you still have issues, you can slide some of the vertices that are surrounded the hole to make the transition smoother, hope this will help:)
@nothingnothing3211
@nothingnothing3211 3 года назад
@@WenboZhao Ya connected those. I basically face the problem in creating the proper topolgy around the bevels because it creates a lot of vertices and it disturbs the topology of the object.
