In this video, I go through a new way to cut shingles. It works much better than a utility knife, especially in cold weather. You can find them at any of your local hardware and lumber yards.

Great idea, so glad I found this video. My Dad bought me one of these oscillating tools a few years ago and at the time I wasn’t sure how often I would use it. It has probably become the most used tool in my kit after the impact. This is another example of it making a fairly tough job (cutting overhanging shingles off the rake)so easy.

I tried it today and it worked great. Before I could install a gutter leaf guard I had to trim 24 foot of shingle that had been installed with too much overhang beyond the drip edge. I did it while standing on a step ladder to reach above the gutter. Not sure I could do it as easily with a manual standing on the ladder. I added a washer thick enough to clear the top of the drive tips of the tool holder. The blade was then held tight between the top holder and washer. It cut like butter without putting lots of side pressure on the blade. Too much side pressure would cause the blade to begin to slip from the holder. I retightened and backed off on the side pressure and it worked fine.

I found this after looking for a better way to cut shingles, because the whole by-hand-with-a-utility-knife thing just wasn't working. Brilliant idea--this works great! Thanks for posting!

This was priceless for cutting old shingles on a difficult tear-off with resin paper. For safety reasons I wanted to cut the shingles into manageable sections for removal and then blow the resin paper off with a leaf blower. Cuts like butter. Thanks.

Today I took a Dremel cutoff wheel to a cheap wood cutting blade. Made and hook, and sharpened it. It took 15 minutes Works awesome even in laminated shingles (32 *F outside). Thanks for the inspiration.

I just did this trimming gable end with a straight edge. It was quick and perfect. Thanks for the video. Good idea.

Dude, great tip!! First time cutting/installing shingles and even at 60+ outside, my hand cuts looked like s**t. This worked so well, where I was pre cutting 2 pcs at a time. Thanks good sir!

Having had tools whose switch was the "off" position suddenly come to life due to a mechanical/electrical problem, I would recommend removing the battery (as you would unplug a corded tool) before installing such a sharp blade. Otherwise this looks to be a great hack!

Awesome. Just the solution I was looking for. I am trying to cut Architectural shingles at below freezing temperatures and it is so difficult to get the hook blade through the middle.

We usually run the shingles wild off of the gable ends and then use that same Dewalt oscillator to trim them tight to the d-edge. You don't even need a sharp blade or one with teeth. We will wear the teeth out half way through the first roof and then use the side of the blade for the next 10 roofs. It doesn't need to be sharp the oscillating motion is enough

Nice trick. Electric shears work too. Makes me wonder why companies just don't make books for you. Just bundles of books already cut.

Thank you for sharing your ideas. Do you have video with that cutting tires? I have a garden project with old tires but I haven’t found a tool that cut the tires along the grooves easily.

I think that's great , but I'm wondering is there any danger of the tool throwing the blade since it's only connected with a hook.... just asking

My Ridgid multi-tool is in the hospital right now but if I remember right there are the little teeth where the blade connects to the multitool (the little holes on a blade connect to the teeth). Can you still do that if your multitool has teeth on the blade lock end? I think the teeth on mine would keep the blade from being able to lay flat.

Tried it out, works great, way cleaner cut and easier on on the wrist that doing it by hand, even when the blade is noticeably dull with the hand knife, you don’t notice it with the oscillator.

Why not just use a regular utility knife? Same blade. If the middle is too tough skip it, bend slightly and rip off.
@spacecoastz4026
@spacecoastz4026 2 года назад
That makes for a poor edge.
@s1dewayz620
@s1dewayz620 2 года назад
@@spacecoastz4026 with practice it comes out pretty nice. You can also flip the shingle upside down, cut, then cut the top and boom. Nice straight lines. And don’t have to carry around a huge tool or worry about batteries.
@spacecoastz4026
@spacecoastz4026 2 года назад
@@s1dewayz620 I don't disagree if the shingle is cut with a regular blade (not a hook blade) upside down, but most roofers don't do that. Cutting with a hook blade and not doing a complete cut and ripping the shingle is poor workmanship.

Ok, like I'm going to carry a multi tool around up on a roof while shingling lol. My Janser or snips work almost just as fast and fit right in my bags. Hope you don't drop that on someones head while they're cleaning up.

i can’t order starter shingles or roof cap where i am at, so i have to make it from 3 tab shingles. this trick is very useful prepping 5 bundles of 3 tab shingles. let’s hope nothing falls on anyone, like a roofing hammer as we could speculate all day of possible outcomes from dropped items. please feel free to post some creative ideas u have, as i would welcome them, and if your ideas are not for me, i wouldn’t be so quick to discourage u as your ideas might work well for someone else’s situation
