The Hunnic army was composed of late period best of best infantry like Chosen Uar Warriors, they also had the best horse archers available in this battle. To counter that Ostrogothic army had quality pikemen and lots of elite archers. This tactic looks simple and familiar to a crude version of pike and shot, but it works best against strong steppe armies consisting of lots of cavalry archers and fighters even with little to no unit microing.
