Hi Geoff! Thank you for your informative video. I use diatomaceous earth as well. A bit in their feed deworms the chickens. If the hens have blood on their eggs, it is a sign of an infestation. I just mix a little into their feed and it’s always there in small amounts so there’s no need to go through a bunch of bother scheduling when to do it. In the poor South of the US, my family also used wood ash in the hen house, roosts, and mixed into their dusting baths. It only takes a little and it will also help control lice and flies. My first coop was large and in a very cold climate in northern Maine. Wood ash was easier and a free by-product of our wood stove heating. I used a large livestock bin with peat moss, sand, and the ashes. I never had any problems with lice or flies. Where I live now, Diatomaceous Earth is the 1st choice because there is little available wood ash. Thanks again!

I use woodash from my stoves an DE. Never have a problem with mites or lice.

3:45 Diatomaceous earth is found at pool supply stores. It's used in pools

No! no, that's the wrong kind. It's only found in feeds stores and labeled FOOD grade only for animal use. The pool chemical DE is very bad.

Hi. You know the tiny flies you were getting in the bathroom? Ever think of using stalosan F on the soil, or would that harm the plants?

White Feather It will not harm your plants. The gnats could be coming up the drain pipes, too. The u bend water, which also blocks sewer gas, in summer can get low or dry up when it’s hot.

What type of bird is that at 40 seconds. Look into using essential oils as a spray to naturally repel bugs. Feed the birds essential oils and charcoal to help internally, but the oils will also co.e through thwir skin so when a mite tries to male home it senses the oils in thr skin and buggers off. Safers Trounce works well on any bugs in 2 mins flat! Its 100% organic its a mixture of essential oils, fatty acids and a surfactant (soap) . Just Dont breathe in the aroma or fumes when spraying!

@@BrimwoodFarm thats odd as i thought pheasent right away when i saw it but im no expert lol Its a nice looking bird, lovley markings on the feathers and the tips are like wow golden bronze almost like a fire in a word beautiful. Good for you, its a wise move to make, try oregano plant for feed and the essential oil is really potent for internal health. dont quote me but i think it also comes out through the pores of the bird so when the bugs try to make home they run into the oil and it kills then or damages their exoskeleton amd they move on, look into other oils that do this i dont have the terminology for it but its a thing. also consume the oils yourself for real health benefits! Hope to see a video on it and the progress in future

It's raining, so yes. Its wet. And I put soil in for them to scratch through so yes, dirty as well.

Diatomaceous earth does nothing to stop the mites in my coop. I even see them walking on it at night without issue.

How much do you put in and can you eat the eggs then?

@michiel5160 sir you need to determine approximately how much by weight your chickens weigh and follow the instructions on the ivermectin dosage schedule, and once these mites have been established in you pen you have to spray then and add lime to the dirt to get rid of them so you can break the breeding cycle of these mites ,do some research on some European sites and ask them how they keep there flocks mite free ,here they won't tell you and it doesn't affect there eggs
