The Best Way to Install Subfloor

I really enjoy installing subfloor. There are only a couple of steps involved to do a good job and then its just rhythm. A good quality adhesive, proper fastening and 1/8" gap all the way around the panels ensures a squeak free assembly.
Check out my blog post for more information, hope this helps. www.awesomeframers.com/blog/installing-subfloor-the-right-way
Oh if you use a drone for commercial work, you need to be part107 certified. Commercial work includes social media like RU-vid if you plan to make an income off of that. I watched a video about this last May and then purchased the Part 107 Course sso.teachable.com/secure/245841/checkout/1320802/bundle-remote-pilot-plus-maneuvers?coupon_code=FRAMERS100&affcode=245841_0eauthdo I studied and learned for 1 month and then took my test. I scored a 95%, which is a testament to how good Greg and the crew over there teach. That link will save you $100 off the course and support this channel.

Do two layers, the second perpendicular and only glued, it's the absolutely best way to do floors and feels very quality under foot.

Do you ever see an issue with the glue flying out when just dropping the panel down on the joists like normal? I have read comments on other videos that since that advantech glue is foamy it won't hold up when letting your panels drop like that. As opposed to another poly glue from loctite or similar that is thicker consistency.

Do you gap sheets throughout the build? Walls and floors? Do you find that it leads to extra cutting of full sheets or not enough to be a concern? In BC framers seem to give a healthy gap between layers of wall sheathing for ventilation so the building can dry out during the building process but not so much in the but joints.
@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers 3 года назад
Yes we gap 1/8" but we don't have to cut panels because they are 'sized for spacing "👍👍

@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers 3 года назад
I'm not totally understanding your question. The longer barrel gun work swell for me at 5'7" so it works even better for taller people, they also don't need to reach out too far and stand on the joists. Does that help?

How much sq ft area do you typically cover on sub floor installation in one day with three people or better saying what should be the right amount for a profesional carpenter?? Thank you and your videos are great !!
@9mmkahr
@9mmkahr 2 года назад
Lol.. All of it. Never met a floor we haven't finished in a day. Even a 5000 sq ft ranch was under a day. One actual carpenter can easily lay an entire row (5-10 sheets), glued and nailed in a little over 5 minutes. Cuts, directional changes, stair holes etc will slow you down.

Do you cut tongues off the first row of sheets on the edge? So that theyre flush? Or leave them on?

Does the advantech glue container immediately become a brick and have to be thrown out after one use (like great stuff)?
@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers 3 года назад
Nope, and that is an excellent question. Life would get expensive real quick if it did. I'll be posting a video soon on how to use the product. Definitely close the valve when you are done and do not take the can off unless it is empty. It'll last about 30 days on the gun at that point, but we've gone longer.
@xxlordbelxx1368
@xxlordbelxx1368 3 года назад
If you do need to take it off for any reason be sure to use the manual spray piece attached to the cleaner can to spray out the top of the glue can and leave it upside down to dry then it will remain perfectly usable indefinitely.. it does require alot less cleaner if you use it often enough to leave the can in it tho.. over 25-40 days and it can ruin your wand tho. Eventually the gasses mixed into the glue for aerosol application will leave the glue and it will harden in the wand, hence shutting the valve all the way before storage... And storing no more than 30 days..

Prob stupid question but if you are gapping the ply 1/8” are you then laying out the joists 16-1/8” o.c.? (Or whatever your spacing is)
@joshmo55
@joshmo55 3 года назад
I think advantech is sized just under 4x8 to allow for the 1/8" spacing.
@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers 3 года назад
good question. Panels now are undersized to allow for the gapping. I remember the good old days where they weren't and that was such a hassle.

@@joshmo55 panels are 47 1/2 wide which is way more than 1/8" gap. Causes a lot of headaches for the perfectionist. Once you get across your joists you come up short and got to scab some crap on there. Great product but why not 47 and 7/8?

Screws are more expensive and with this glue major over kill. We just use ring shank nails. Built hundreds of houses this way and never had a floor squeak even 15 years later just using liquid nails... Just saying... I guess if you're in a super humid area with more expansion rates it could be less overkill, but that glue works really well here around the great lakes with just 2 3/8 ring shank nails.. plus the gun is way faster...

I hear you. We've been in business for 43 years, so we have a huge amount of experience living in our homes and visiting family who live in our homes. Because we build in the PNW, screws are cheap insurance, much cheaper than a call back.

@para keet spray glue is not a subfloor adhesive and shouldn't be used.
@xxlordbelxx1368
@xxlordbelxx1368 3 года назад
@para keet Oh god.. You should have been there... Like 2-3 months ago we had a house where they didn't let us know the changes on the second floor so we made it to print and had to tear out about 3'x14' of the subfloor and run a new girder for the landing edge.. if we didn't have our own crane to lag and lift the whole floor it would have taken us a whole day to tear it all up with chisels.. instead luckily we were able to lift the whole floor and cut through the i-joists and subfloor all as one long cut.. first use I've had for my 2man bandsaw in about 8 years. Lol.. it was kinda fun watching the laborers try to tear it apart for fitting in a dumpster tho.. 😂😂
