The presets I'm using here is "Matchless35" for HX Stomp or Helix
Please leave a comment if you find this type of preset build useful, so that I know to keep making them!
/ johnnathancordy you can get my backing tracks and lesson tabs here.

only if you wanted, you could buy me a coffee!
Get my PADs bundle here: www.paypal.com... (this folder will grow, and I'd encourage you to ask for different keys/songs and stuff that might suit this type of preset?)
I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
Try my general patches for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com...

The problem with modes for guitar players is that the harmonic aspects is often overlooked. However, learning modal cadences will help you a lot to get their colours in simple/common music/songs or bringing new ideas provided by modal interchanges that may level up your musicianship.

What's the Harmonic Aspects? Sounds like a synth band from the early 80s. I mean that as a legit compliment

@@mattgilbert7347 it is the chord sequences you play that will match the mode you want to explore.

Hey Papa John. I listened to this vid walking the dog and came home and did what you suggested...shifting between modes over a one note vamp really does work. Fantastic and inspiring. Thank you. Now go change a nappy

Early on, I learned my major scale, my minor natural, my half-diminished, etc. Much (much) later I learnt they are also sometimes called Ionian, Aeolian, Locrian, etc. Big deal. It's good to know that modes exist. Then (quickly) move on.

Great Lesson. The one that made most sense to me was Joe Satriani Lesson on the Modes #1 (synchronized) from 12 years ago. He starts with an E drone and takes off on a melodic journey through the modes. BTW - Love your playing - such a unique style.

The lightbulb came on for me when I learned that the chord and/or progression bring out the modal sound, not the scale alone. Guitar is rarely played without harmony so you’re not getting the sound of the mode without the chords. Typically a progression will highlight that note that’s different from major or straight minor. Then apply the scale strategically.

The helix 3 note generator effect could probably make that single note backing track That would drone in the background without even using a looper

Holy flip. Lesson in how to make a backing track with only a root note sound like all manner of wonderful things. That was completely epic John!

Remarkable to notice how my brain "creates" the modes based on how JC moves to/ from and within the modes, how modal music is almost inverted to how I listen to other, more popular types of music.

You can find anything on the internet. Yesterday I watched a video by a Nashville session guitarist who said that it is absolutely essential for anyone wanting to be a serious and well rounded player to know the major scales, the pentatonic scales, the arpeggios, and the modes so well that he/she can play them almost unconsciously.

I did my best not to learn anything about modes from this RU-vid but I did learn something. This is great. I heard Frank Gambale talking about this in a video.

You are definitely correct I also think drone root backing is the best way to hear the color of the modes. Chord progressions can cause you to divert into a non modal scale and loose the mode tones. Good example is Joe Satriani Flying in a Blue Dream is similar to a drone rhythm as well as Steve Vai has some great ones.

The thing that clicked for me years ago on modes was the fact that modes are meaningless unless you hear those sounds against a tone or chord, it is somewhat meaningless to understand. When I teach it to other people, I describe it as being similar to looking at stars. You know the difference between the Big Dipper (chord) and Little Dipper (chord) because you can see which stars (notes) are adjacent. This is why I think in terms of which of the seven diatonic chord numbers I'm playing and then what scale notes surround that chord. Example-the 1,4,5 chords are all major, but each of those chords have a single surrounding note that is different. Changing between each of those notes against the major chord lets your hear the difference.

Question Mr. Cordy? Do you know the modes? I find it interesting that all the teachers/instructors on you-tube do. They know their scales, chord structures, progressions, theory etc. They are for all intensive purposes complete musicians. One being better than another is completely subjective, BUT they all have this in common. They put in the work and learned the foundations. The creativity is up to us as players once we have the tools ingrained to create with. A blacksmith has to have tools and knowledge to forge his creations. Same with guitarist. The answer to my question to you is obviously yes. Thanks for the video and keeping it real.

That's a good way to get at the sound of modes. Here's a link to a RU-vid video of Rick Beato interviewing Frank Gambale about Modes that I found particularly useful, as Frank talks about modal chords and harmony: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jkzJ8F_TllI.html

disagree with the idea modes aren't important or are a technical guitar thing without much use outside of that. I think it is because how guitarists often approach them, as a tool to solo over a chord, either static chords, or fleetingly using a mode over a chord that exists in that mode but within a chord progression that is in a more standard major/minor tonality, which is where it can sound like a flashy shredder thing. Really the strength is that it opens up completely different chord progressions with very different feels. Think the concept of modes should be taught by just highlighting songs that are written in different modes so people can hear the different moods they enable, then it falls in to place, otherwise it just seems like a scales exercise

Nice, video, thank you for your advices ! At 11:45 when you said that you focusing on the #4, how do you manage to do that ? What's in your head to targeting thoses notes ? You see, all your Ds and the #4 intervals ? It's different to see #4 (relative to D) than to see A major scale over a D chord. Or do you see a D triad adding a #4 over a A major scale (for the rest of the mode) ?

Nicely presented. I've only really had success with modes by simply playing the "wrong" major scale over a different chord. To be fair, I've also had _failure_ doing this!
@chrishandley
@chrishandley Год назад
Really useful video, so would that be modal interchange? With parallel modes? Not playing the chord scales of the individual chords of a progression.
@tossedpenny

People overthink modes way too much when trying to first understand them. It's hard to convince someone that if they have mastered the major scale they have also then already mastered the modes, they just don't know it. Kinda like seeing the forest through the trees.
