In this video I go over the two most frequently used methods of starring up insects, guaranteed star ups and 45% probability star ups. I demonstrate the 45% probability star ups with a large number of blue insects and compare the outcomes with a guaranteed star up. I also go over the math to prove which method should give a better return on investment in the long run.

Problem is, the law of weighted averages won't take affect at the higher levels of star up. This creates outsized risk at upper ends and thus more variance in overall results. It may be a good suggestion to not do this with your 10-8 star insects if you are risk adverse.

You need at least 30 chances for the law of averages to take affect. With very few opportunities at star ups for level 8-10, bad luck here will really hurt.

You may be right, but look at it from this perspective: You have a 10 + 9 + 9. You could go safe and do 11 star. Alternatively, 45% with 10 + 9. You may get lucky first try and get an 11 star. Otherwise you’ll try again at 45% with the other 9 star. If that fails too, you got a 10 + 8 + 8. You can make 8 + 8 into a 9 star, and you got another 10 + 9 to try at the 45%. Three attempts at 45%. Now, agreed that you can get very bad luck and fail all three, in which case you’ll have a 10 star and an 8 star left. So it really depends on how much risk you’re willing to take.

@@troysweere2417You'll get there over time. I only gamble for 9.11% chances and I have 4 11S insects. My mostly F2P friend has an 11S one, and all my F2P alts have one or more 9S insects like this, 11S locusts, etc. It hurts but it's the best way.

I'd go one step further. The right gamble is 9.11% chance. That's three fewer levels, such as 10+7, 9+6, and so on. Definitely not for the faint hearted. You lose a lot, yes. About 90.89% of the time. But the losses are minimal, while the rewards are huge. If you consider the success rate, it's the cheapest way to get an 11S, both in source insects and fodder.

Maybe test it with your blue ones first. Orange always has the risk of getting terrible luck and losing all you got!

Hmm.. i did a calculation, too. But it differs from yours: For example: to get one 5 Star insect (16), you can make it with two 4 Star insects (8 x2 = 16) to get the 100% starup./ If you do it with a 4 Star (8) and a 3 Star (4), you have a 45% chance to succes. So you need on avarage 2,22 tries for a starup. On the final try this will cost you 12 Insects (4 Star (8) + 3 Star (4)). To get this final try, you have to pass 1,22 tries (2,22 - 1 = 1,22). Each try cost you 2 Insects (3 Star (4) - 2 Star (2) who remains = 2) . So the 1,22 Tries will cost additional 2,44 Insects (1,22 * 2). When i add all tries together, it will cost me 14,44 Insects (2,44 + 12 for the final try). In this calculation, it is better to do it with a 4 Star and a 2 Star! You will only need 13,94 Insects to starup... I created a excel sheet - and in most cases, the 20,25% starup is the most effective one (i can share a screenshot if needed)... Where is my mistake in thinking? Because in your calculation the 20,25% starup is ineffective (0,9509375 compared to 1,04375 at 45%)

Hey Vitamin, I did not quite follow the calculations. However, one thing to note is that you cannot add probabilities to get the average number of times needed to get something. A quick explanation, at 45%, there is a 55% chance of failure. If you try 45% twice, there is a ((0.55 * 0.55) * 100) = 30.25% chance that you’ll fail both times. If you try 45% three times, there’s a ((0.55 * 0.55 * 0.55) * 100) = 16.67% chance that you will fail all three times. Now, if you look at this number by itself, it seems like a pretty bad deal right? But in reality the probability of getting it the first try, or the second try (or even the third try) make up for this small chance of failure three times in a row. Hope this makes sense. Feel free to correct me if I made a mistake.

@@theskyalliance I dont see any mistakes :) Thats why i am wondering... maybe my calculation is wrong :/ In my calculation i ask: how many 1Star Insects does the starup cost me (one 4 Star insect is worth eight 1Star insects...) on absolute avarage! (the less it costs, the better it is..) When the chance to starup is 20% => i will need 5 tries to get the 100% in the long term. So to reach a 5 Star insect, it will cost me (on ABSOLUTE AVARAGE): - 16 insects when i use two 4 star insects (100% => 1 try is needed) - 14,44 insects when i use a 4 star and a 3 star insect (each try has a chance of 45 % => 2,22 tries needed) - 13,94 insects when i use a 4 star and a 2 star insect (each try has a chance of 20,25 % => 4,94 tries needed) - 18,98 insects when i use a 4 star and a 1 star insect (each try has a chance of 9,11 % => 10,98 tries needed) As you said: there is a 16,67% chance of failing three times (my record was to fail 8 times in a row at the 45% chance (= 0,55^8 = 0,8% chance for that)). But there is the possibilty of 45% to get it on the first try. Thats why i use the avarage tries, because on the long term it will take me 2,22 tries to starup... Or is this my mistake?

I’ve had better success feeding 3* 1* insects and missing 3 times, then attempting a 6* with a 5*. About 75% success that way. 9* upgrades have been lower than 45%, so for me 8* and up now only 100%. My sample size is limited, so therefore may not be statistically significant.

Все верно, я бы ещё рекомендовал для новичков и f2p игроков, которые нуждаются в первом 9* диком, делать до 3* по 100% как рекомендует автор, затем 3-8* по 45%. И начиная с 9* делать по 100%. Так вы будете тратить меньше драгоценного корма и меньше рисков. Конечно есть те, кто не согласятся, у кого удача по 45% работает как удача 100%. Но даже исходя из этого видео видно, что порой 4-6-10 неудач подряд по 45% вполне реальны, а цены на корм начиная с 9* космические, пару неудач и вы будете копить корм очень долго играя бесплатно конечно же. Зато у вас будет выгода как раз в промежутке с 3-8* и вы потратите меньше диких на гарантированное улучшение с 9 звезды и выше.

Great comment! Agreed that if you don’t want to take major risks at high star insects, you may just choose to go safe. Especially 8+8, as for F2P getting a 9 star would be a game-changer and therefore a priority.
