For me starting a band in this day in age would need the members to physically show up instead of sending wav. Formats to each other's computers to download and putting in your instrumental piece and mixing it down. The aspect of learning timing is so huge and you can only do that when playing live with others and making sure it stays fun and not turning it into a job to where people lose interest.
@oldschoolfunkster1
@oldschoolfunkster1 2 года назад
I did that in my younger years. Started or joined bands unsuccessfully due either personality frictions, attitudes, banning on drug use or drinking while playing, traveling issues, or just plain family priorities. So simply put, it was difficult to get everyone on the same page. Sometimes it felt like I was the only one taking it seriously. Some were just there to party or meet girls. I wanted to play popular songs for events then eventually insert some originals. It got so bad that I just completely gave up playing in bands. My new plan was to invest in multichannel recording equipment and do it all myself. Didn't have computers or DAW programs in those days. I bought more guitars, bass, drums and keyboards to practice. I finally have all I need to be basically a one man band. What's great is... I don't have to deal with schedules or attitudes. Only real problem is learning all of what DAWs do and offer. I'm not computer savvy. I have some originals I have to polish up. Hoping one day I can complete a whole album. And THEN comes learning how to market the songs. So even though I'm late into the recording game I still have alot to learn. Good luck in your future projects!

Physically showing up anywhere in Los Angeles means sitting in the car in traffic for ~2+ hours.. an act that is simply ridiculous.. so many successful bands' core members physically grew up together in the same neighborhood or were classmates at the same school ... or were even blood relatives.. The geography problem is real.

Infamously Van Halen finished their first major tour in extraordinary debt. They were in debt during Roth's entire run. Springsteen, Prince and so many bands suffered trash contracts and no money. If your goal is financial success, you have to approach with a business mindset. Paul McCartney was educated in accounting and was crucial to the Beatles making the band a business. A wedge issue between him and Lennon

Max, when I read the title I thought it would talk more about where and how to find members. I'm many years removed from high-school, and not sure people are pulling phone numbers off flyers at the doors of Guitar Center anymore. Maybe a follow up on finding other like minded musicians. The video is full of so much great info once you do have the band.
@superblondeDotOrg

I agree with this. Even just a few years ago, the "ads" posted at Guitar Center's cork pinboard looked more like prison letters than anything legitimate. Many of the postings had simple words misspelled and were written in caveman-scrawl, no joke. Typical advice is still to put up a post on the local craigslist but that doesn't work out since there is so much trash there, it is worse than the worst online dating site. Many pop producers say they see & track down vocalists after seeing random video posts on instagram and thus create bands around the vocalist. I have yet to find bandmates in any of these ways, the only way that works is through friends of friends but that only goes so far, when others are not 'as serious' about music.

A few weeks ago I saw the Pink Floyd trbute band Brit Floyd, which was (and may still be) touring the U.S. I found myself wondering about the people in the band. They're all professional musicians, for sure. But when they were 18 years old did they think, "I want a career imitating the music of a big, successful rock group"? I highly doubt it. They likely all wanted a career being the next Pink Floyd, not a career imitating the original Pink Floyd. So are they a failure or a success? Not for me to judge, but I do think it's just one more way of looking at the music biz that shows us just how difficult a biz it is. Many are called, few are chosen.

Man, I dunno.... all this modern Internet based music, musicians playing over the net.... sounds weird to me in a way. I started my first band in the mid eighties and it was like a gang thing, us against the world, trying to find a rehearsal space, going around putting up fliers for our first gigs, getting drunk afterwards, loading up our gear into our sh*t old van. It was such fun. The young kids nowadays ate very lucky to have the technology though. Being able to get any amp sound you want with an amp sim, digital home recording etc. Enjoy it dudes.🤘😎🤘

My band, RIFLE, is independent and has been for about 2 decades now... We have a studio in my basement and record/release our records on our own. We have recently started a RU-vid Channel to reach people outside of our shows and the streaming platforms we are on. We have been posting videos of live music, gear reviews, guitar/bass/drum maintenance, set-up and modification plus a good dose of comedy. Are we rich, no... are we successful, yes. We have a large local following and a growing world wide audience. We make enough money between all this and merch sales to support the band. Not quitting my day job anytime soon but in the grand scheme of things we are successfully doing what we love, reaching more and more people everyday and enjoying every moment. Great and informative video gentlemen, thank you for posting!

Being 52 I've seen the change from hitting the local bars/dives/lounges and just anywhere they'd have live bands play. Doing the mailing list and handing out little flyers where the band will play next week or tomorrow, etc. Going to the door and having them ask "how are you here to see" so that count of bodies goes to the band that brought in a crowd. Bands cut their teeth sweating it out Doing that and a great way to gain a following. Especially if a slot liked you you may be asked back and it's good biz for place having you play because they made their money off the drinks bought and fans paying to come in. Bands crafted their workmanship and sound during these hard times. Music companies make it easier to perform at areas you can't get to play in booking your own act to play in. Large festivals to large arenas. Like in the video you'll get a spot on a large show if it came from a company than from an unknown even if they had the talent. Clubs can still be used I'd assume but now everything is shifting to social media. Back then if a band was looking for a singer, drummer, guitarist, bassist or a singer looking for a band, etc, you'd find it on a board on the wall of a club. People would watch other bands to check out what's on the scene. The notion of albums being great, a full album crafted well, if being a thing of the past. Now it's singles (though many a band/singer have had serious success). The 20 year olds have no idea how it was 40 years ago because it may have been an entirely different world.

If you're 20 years old and you're lucky enough to be born into a family that listened to metal and you already have experience playing instruments, you can certainly start a band. After 35 years old you won't find anyone, especially if you play Death Metal for example. And such music has a small circle of admirers. You have to have a decent music education to create really catchy riffs. You have to play what hooks the whole band, not what RU-vid demands, but then you won't get any money. Almost all successful metal content on RU-vid is commercial and made for the needs of the listener. There are good bands, but not many people listen to them.

It's think it's probably fair to say that my career is in its twilight years - though hopefully, I've still got some good years left. That said, I don't envy the youngsters of today who are looking to make a career in music. Yes, there are more opportunities to get your music out there but the market for live music has been shrinking since, well, almost since I started in the late 70s. I'm happy to say that while I never hit the heights I'd hoped for, I've still managed to play thousands upon thousands of shows from coast to coast in Canada on innumerable tours, from small clubs through to really big outdoor concerts, along with everything in between. I don't know if we'll ever get that kind of live music scene again but I suspect not. And that saddens me. Still, best of luck to the up and comers.

Hardest part is Finding Musicians that work to your Jobs Schedule, Having two Practice days for the entire band, Easiest part having logo merch cds albums in fact they are already done... My advice is just keep on making albums until you can go out that door to some gigs in your area to find members The only thing is that I feel I am some what exhausted by the Musicians at the shows partially cause they are know to be in other bands and have that stigma to them... I dont know probably not a good way to feel but you really should just give everything a try and what ever works out works outs...
