Greetings mortals. In this video, I tell you about Microscope, a game by Ben Robbins you can use to develop lore and worldbuild your homebrew setting for a TTRPG campaign. At least that's how I'm using it. It's pretty fun to play all on its own too!

This is useful not just for ttrpg, but for really anything with a story and that's great.

Absolutely. It's one of the most creatively inspiring games I've ever played

You could also use TAROT cards. The further back in time from the story's POV, the few cards are drawn unless there's a robust historical society or technologies that would have preserved those events. It works pretty well as the TAROT covers quite a number of universal themes and many of the cards are supposed to be interpreted as actual persons.

Ooh that's a cool idea. Tarot cards could definitely be a huge storytelling/worldbuilding tool. You should consider writing up a brief ruleset and publish it on itch.io or DriveThruRPG. I'd love to see it

This game really teaches you to kill your darlings. Something you’re working towards can be shattered by choices of another player, just roll with it. Also exercise in letting go when roleplaying. The game I was in was for the rise and fall of an elven empire I would use for dnd, the city ruins and magic items in the world being their legacy. We had a moment of contention during a scene where we all seemed to misinterpret the place of other races within the empire, but it ended up still leading to interesting conclusions.

You made me curious and I just grabbed it. :D I'm still unsure how to use it by myself (even tho the intent is clearly for it to be multiplayer, I'm mostly intrigued by the worldbuilding framework)

I can say it's definitely more fun and more intuitive with more people, but it can definitely be a super useful tool solo!
