Another nice thing about this quest is that it’s very reward heavy. Between the loot from the dead bright followers and nightkin, the large EXP granted from the amount of enemies you fight and completing the quest itself, and the unique space suit being a lightweight and fashionable way to have some extra radiation resistance I find the quest worth it every time.

Both the tedious gameplay and good writing combine to make the quest memorable for me. It took me a full session to get through it on my first playthrough, and it always seemed like a very large side quest. The two REPCONN buildings are some of my favorite locations because of this janky quest.

In a way, Come Fly With Me sort of foreshadows Obsidian's design philosophy. You can see it in The Outer Worlds, where the characters are really well crafted they add to the world that they inhabit, but the quests themselves are just running errands for other people.

I'd say a *very* memorable moment for me during my first run was, with the goal of getting the rocket toys, buying the key to the Novac Closet, walking in, and seeing dozens upon dozens of the Rocket Toys. While it is admittedly a smaller part of the quest, I always found that specific aspect to make it very memorable.

I just got into fallout and i always click on videos and assume im way late to things but Im more often than not pleasantly surprised to find there is still an extremely active community of people actively making videos and discussing this game. Like I look down after this video is over and see this was only posted an hour ago!? This blows my mind

To me it suffers "Main Quest Syndrome" its rather lengthy with quite a bit of dialog and a few outcomes can be reached depending on how you approach things, But once you move past that it feels very 'on rails'. Like Skyrim's main quest for instance, I've put thousands of hours into that shit easy, but I've only ever been to Sovngarde to fight Alduin once and never again because after that first time it all feels so tedious and on rails. That's how 'Come Fly With Me' feels to me. On top of that, depending on how you play the main quest, come fly with me becomes almost mandatory (there are a ton of ways to circumvent having to do it at all, but the most straightforward path the game sets you on has you do it to move things forward) The more time consuming and complex a quest is the greater chance it has from suffering MQS

I think you're thinking of the 'moon logic' with the rocket souvenir solution wrong. Chances are, if you've spent any time in Novac you'd notice that Cliff leaves his store at night and you can do the easy lockpick on his storage closet. Since the rocket souvenirs weigh nothing, are worth a bit of money, and are not considered stealing, you might take a bunch of them to sell later. Then you'll stumble onto this alternate solution during the quest. This is how I did that part the first time I played FNV. Still a pretty bad quest in my eyes though

It’s far from being worst, maybe a bit tedious but you don’t even have to backtrack too much and it’s full of funny characters and dialogues, not to mention a lot of cool loot (Spacesuit is my default pick for main armor before I get Joshua Graham outfit, and I always keep it for irradiated areas). Red Lucy’s quest or Boomers quests are much worse.

I think the main issue is that your first encounter with it is most likely going to be as a "main quest", and it's waaay too long for that. Compare that to Primm's "go in, kill a few powder gangers, rescue Beagle" quest. Since your first time with this super long, choice-heavy quest is literally holding up your progress to continue the main story (unless you go full murderer), it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth for any subsequent playthroughs. If it was a quest you just so happen to stumble into when entering the building (as in, Manny never points you there, or just asks for you to kill the feral ghouls outside without entering), it would be a lot more enjoyable, since the quest isn't holding the rest of the game hostage.

This hits home because on my most recent run of New Vegas, as soon as I got into the basement the game completely glitched out the lighting leaving the entire area in pitch darkness, and any time I tried going back in after leaving would 100% crash the game immediately to desktop

Your first choice is to just kill all the ghouls. Maybe that fails the quest but it is basically what your were asked to do and it continues you along the main quest.

My first playthrough, I struggled so much to do this quest because I didn’t know I could negotiate with the nightkin. I thought I could only kill them. So I struggled to fight them and they would come out of the shadows and I would shit myself everytime it was so scary for me

I only figured out the rocket toys worked because i stole them all from the trex before i did the quest

Gotta say, the REPCONN building is a huge maze and super confusing, especiallywith the multiple floors and basement. Though, it did flex my spatial memory a bit. Gets my brain going with memorizing the building layout.

Launching the rockets and sabotaging them actually screws Novac over in the long run. I’ve improved the trajectory of rockets a few times to help them ? But I forget what happens, but I don’t think they actually go that much father lol. I honestly either chose the comfirmed bachelor perk and realized you could get info to avoid this mission. Or you can look at his terminal and it tells you Jessup is in Boulder City.

letting boone murder his friend is the correct path. Best of all you dont even have to explain himself to sniper later lol, i wonder how he feels like in my save file. a stranger appeard, told him to shoot his friend and left

first playthrough, got up to where he asked me to get the fuel. me and boone just spent somewhere near 45 minutes getting lost in the basement. i just lost it and blasted jason's head off and boone sniped the not ghoul

Not to mention that killing any nightkin (who are invisible, block you in the maze, and attack on sight) but there's no way to convince their leader that you had no other choice. Also with the ghoul looking for his friend at the end, if you try to do a stealth and steal the info from his terminal then he'll immediately go hostile even if he didn't see you. Also no way to convince him in dialogue that she's dead.

2:38 The worst quest in NV - and in fact every 3D Fallout - is in fact the quest to extract any kind of useful information from the local map. I legit don't think I ever have.

Pro tip: just walk 20 feet to boulder city and do the great kahn negotiation. about 50x faster

This is the quest that really made me realize this game was going to be one of my favorite games. It was peak Fallout humor.

Its funny bc in my second playtrought i randomly figured out the rocket had the agent inside because i bought a weapon from the guy from the dino and when i came back to sell him junk from the facility i saw the dialogue option about that it got the agent inside the rockets

I used to hate Come Fly With Me back when I treated Fallout like a game and not a narrative, immersive experience. After my time with Fallout 1 and 2, though, I've learned to love Fallout games with all their issues by simply gaslighting myself into thinking "oh, but this would be awful and tedious if I was in a dusty radioactive wasteland, so I actually enjoy how shit this is!" Also, around 3:40 you started talking about how the choice of helping both the nightkin and the ghouls conflict with each other and are tedious, making you lean towards just killing one or both of them to make your life easier. That's, in my opinion, actually really cool. It's using gameplay to force you to make tough decisions. Do you make your life easier by just killing everything in your path, or do you do the morally righteous thing despite the drawbacks and punishments? Its not just "do good or do bad", its "go the hard way or the easy way, but the hard way is better in the long run".

I enjoyed the quest, but _forgot_ how tedious it was or how much you benefit from having a guide when doing it. As an experienced player, I don't mind it so much because I know how to speedrun it now. I grab the isotope rockets out of the Novac shop, run straight to the upper level to Jason, and the basement is forgiving enough that you can resolve things with the "pacifism" route if you know where to go and don't kill too many Nightkin. But now I recall how all the back-tracking the first time around, especially in the earlier and more unstable NV versions when the game would sometimes freeze/crash in loading screens. I also know how to speedrun to New Vegas at level 1 straight to the Vegas Strip nowadays, so this quest isn't even one I feel obligated to go out of my way for except out of a sense of completionism.

The new player bias worked in reverse for me I, spent like 3 hours (save file time) doing literally just this quest, and gradually learned every single one of its inconveniences, as someone playing their first Fallout (intending to finish it) and only with the base game I despised trudging through the quest so much that the writing went over my head outside of the key details

I always opted to not do this quest in replays, but never thought about why other than “Eh, I don’t feel like it.” But now I realize I didn’t feel like it because it sucks.

If I were to describe the quest with one sentence, it would be "a side quest that pretends to be a main quest" It's a long quest where a lot of the length doesn't come from challenges, but from tedium. In a way it's like Dead Money. The DLC also has amazing lore and interesting characters, but the gameplay is tedious. Some people like that, some people tolerate it, and some can't stand it. Which also explains why Dead Money is either the worst or the best DLC of the game, depending on who you ask.

I remember playing this quest as a kid and becoming absolutely enthralled with the game during it. I also had horrible nightmares about feral ghouls.

I always loved reverse pickpocketing and taking the space suits

I actually found the basement part a little contrived. I generally try to go for a peaceful solution where possible, and it was frustrating to me that Harland was so stubborn about not leaving or letting you search the room, and Davison couldn't help you recover the body. It was bizarre to me that the most practical solution was to kill Harland, the guy that's supposed to be on the same side as you. Still, the characters were great overall despite this one instance of contrived stupidity.

I did this quest thinking it was a main quest. This was possibly the worst introduction i could've had to the series since i experienced this so early on, but im glad i still stuck with new vegas. The only upside was that it was a very rewarding quest with tons of weapons. Absolutely hated this quest, it was boring, tedious, and very confusing to navigate through the basement.

Even Josh Sawyer said this isn't a good quest, and that their inexperience really showed.

Currently playing new vegas for the first time blind, got the isotope from the rockets by accident. Went to sell off a load of fission batties and stealth boys (at Novac gift shop) i had aquired from the basement and was happy to come across an easy soloution to my problem. Aslo meant i got 'that gun' for free also

It doesn’t matter if it has good story writing. I’m still going to mash that the skip button. also every time I play this quest specifically doing his quest. My game just goes bottoms up and crashes every 10 minutes.

Just started playing this game and this quest alone has taken 2/6 of the hours I've placed, I am exhausted

It was fun to do the first go around, but in all my subsequent playthroughs whether role playing or not i just grab the stuff needed before arrival or kill jason and his flock. Or even better I literally just leave those losers behind after flirting with Manny to get my info.

I feel like the first part of the quest - clearing the nightkin out of the basement - would be better if it were slightly easier to sneak past the nightkin to complete Harland's objective for the quest. I am obsessive about completing quests with as many people alive as possible and this quest becomes annoying with the amount of reloads I need in order to complete the quest without pissing off Davison or killing Harland. The fetch quest portion is a bit boring but it is most frustrating that they won't just let you say "I'll go and get both things in one trip." If you know where they are you can actually do this (since the igniting agent is always spawned in on Mr. RADical) but new players who aren't using a guide have to go through the back and forth. This is definitely one of the worst quests in the game but in all honesty it's still pretty good in my opinion. Like, there's just so many GREAT quests in New Vegas that this one suffers a lot in comparison.

Love this quest and the fact that the rocket souvenirs contain the thrust fluid and the game never tells you that always made me smile. The game not holding your hand is actually the best part about it

First time I did the quest, I turned in the toys. The shop owner says they have rocket fuel in them. Second time around I rigged it to blow and drove Haversam crazy in dialogue! I wish Skyrim's quests had this many choices. Or, ya know, any choices. Sometimes you get two. Wow. If this dungeon's sprawl bothers you, don't play anything from the 80's or 90's. For the love of Phynaster, don't even dare play the Bard's Tale games. THE SPINNERS!

I completely missed speaking to any npcs in the basement and I still ended this quest so frustrated I made a beeline for vegas the moment I finished it. My game crashing to desktop at the rocket launch didn't help either. (Iirc I actually abandoned the quest after that and came back later for the launch) 90% of my frustration was from the layout of that fucking building, I've lost hours of my life in there.

I find that the two major story quests before you get to Freeside (Ghost Town Gun Fight and Come Fly With Me) are just so easy to skip on repeat playthroughs. They're really fun and memorable on the first but after that? There's really no reason to do them.

I'm angry I hadn't known about the hatch. Or the rocets. Although I found a dead body with the material, maybe it was from a mod

i think they definitely focused on narrative and character writing on this one before they thought of gameplay. im sure it used to end before the fetch quest chris gives and they just fly off in the rockets. But it being one of the first quests, and having most of its combat be avoidable, i think they decided to add that fetch quest for some rootin tootin shootin

The first half of this quest is amazing. The awful part is the fetch part.

This quest could have been less tedious. Maybe if the nightkin patrolling the basement were less of a problem, the peaceful way of clearing the area out would not force you to suffer for that warm fuzzy feeling. And the Clark's Field fetch quest could be made more interesting. The thrust control modules could also have used an alternative. Yes, you could try buying them off Lady Gibson. But what if she told you of another location where you could find them for free, and she wants you to clear it out for her own future salvage runs, where you both profit? Or maybe have her give you a sidequest that makes you feel you are delivering justice to an old lady who has been wronged by, say, Caesar's Legion or raiders? That, and cutting out a few steps of having to run back and forth and back again to get to places could clean up the quest, and make you feel like you are doing a long, fulfilling and substantive quest, rather than a long, boring and tedious quest.

On the first go, maybe. But even on the first go you can get the whole grocery list from Haversian and get everything done in one swoop. Far as the basement is concerned the outcome is largely the same whether you help or kill everyone.

On paper it's a good quest but in practice it is long, dull & frustrating for low levels. You don't really have much choice, there's only 2 ways to deal with Harland (neither have consequences) and the sneak option is difficult (save scum or fight when you fail sneak) The XP reward sucks unless you do all skill checks (unlikely for low levels) or kill Harland for the Hunting Rifle (strong for the entire game)

the way it's structured may be objectively bad but it's still one of my favorite quests of all time. i wouldn't have got into the fallout games if it weren't for come fly with me. new vegas was my first fallout and the beginning of the game felt very boring and tedious, especially since i had no other context about the other games. come fly with me hooked me though, i thought it was so absurd and unlike any other quest i've done in any game. it got me to play to the strip at least and that's where i really fell in love with the game. i look at it very fondly.

Hated thus mission the first time I played it because I was lost and felt underpowered to Fight Nk. But thus time I got Boone and as I'm doing the quest he shoots the goul in the basement. So I killed everyone in that facility and left.

If you go early game and have the right guns, it’s not the worst thing ever.

I learned so much thing by this video the whole part with the bug blue guy I never got it cause I went with an other path so the guy just said you bad me kill you and so much more

First time playthrough, I wanted to help everyone but it was getting too tedious and just killed the mutants. Already had the stuff for the launch because I watched a guide that told me to get this stuff before I did the quest. The second time I played, I ignored the quest until the late game and decided to do the same thing and kill the mutants.

The fact that 100% of the players went through this quest in their first 5-6 hours of gameplay talks a lot, new player bias is real, after beating it a few times it just becomes a chore, sure the items are okay but I don't need them with any character when I can go to New vegas with easily 4000 caps without farming enemies, luck 9 and just straight up rob all casinos, arm myself with an antimateriel and combat armor mk2 and just murder everything on sight, then transition to some shotgun build and demolish the game And in the case I don't want to go to new vegas that quickly (like in my all perfect choices and paths playthrough), just take the Gobi campaign scout rifle at level 6-7 or so and still annihilate everything, my fun with new vegas comes from lore, mythos and killing stuff, come fly with me has everything, but just so tedious that it makes me wanna ignore Novac altogether Anyway, after some time playing one can just beat this quest in less than 30 minutes reducing the fetching to 0 thanks to already having the items and enjoying the free level up

ive playey through fnv 8 times. ive completed come fly with me 5 times. ive only ever found harland TWICE. ive never helped the nightkin, i never even knew that was an option, nor did i know that helping harland was and option. Iliterally had no idea harland was a thing until my third full playthrough.

3 sugar bombs works wonders

Hate to be "that guy" but im pretty sure you can *literally* do the quest in about 5 minutes if you buy the storage key or lockpick the door and grab 3/4 rocket souvenirs, and then you just take a right and talk to the nightkin with antler, kill the ghoul skipping the annoying part of the quest, and just check the terminal and return to the nightkin that gave you the key, and then you just finish the quest. Aside from that the quest is annoying because of the building's layout.

Come fly with me is a good quest just because of the many different ways you have to complete the quest. Kill the ghoul, let the nightkin live. Tell them there's no stealth boys there. They leave. Mix sugar bombs with the rocket fuel to kill the ghouls. Buy the parts off old lady Gibson or steal her key and steal them to pocket the cash. Find toy rockets in novac or go to Clark field. There are so many ways to do this quest. Then you can also mess with the guidance system to make the ghouls journey safer, or make things worse if you have low enough intelligence. (You could also help the ghoul but who does that lol)

8:11 I agree, I avoid this quest as much as I can during my playthroughs and only go to it for "easy" xp once I'm like level 13, I also agree with the title in a way that might not have been intentional. I love it for the story and hate it for the gameplay.

Come fly with me is awesome, I dont know what your problem is^^. The bald guy who think he's bald is hillarious, you have multiple options on how to solve it (save or kill them) and you get some nice loot.

This is definitely not the worst mission in that game… genuinely cannot think of any negatives to the mission that aren’t nitpicks. It’s a fun quest with an interesting story, doesn’t take that long anyway so ????

I hate this quest. It would be fine except that the Repconn facility is so annoying to navigate, and after youve already done an impossible task (Peacefully dealing with the nightkin) then they send you out on a fetch quest!

I think you guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill As you said, the quest has some really interesting writing, and it's flaw is the level design I think that for a quest to be that bad, it need to fail in both And cmon, the level desing isn't even that bad, the feral ghouls will keep your head occupied in it's labyrinth of offices, and the super mutants on the basement Also, about the rocket thing, you talk to that trader inside the dinosaur in Novac, and if you have enough speech, you can get a bunch of those rockets, and the option to give them to scientist, is a nice bonus, who could surprise players who decided to carry a rocket around for shits and giggles (like me)

this feels like a mod opportunity. simplify the basement and have all of the fetch quest items appear at once so you can hand them all in at once. this feels like its already a mod or was at one point if its gone now.

It was a long, confusing and tedious quest, but there were some hilarious moments, the XP was good, the loot was pretty good, so I kinda liked it. Anyways, where else are you going to find a nice space suit?

I always thought this quest was really fun in the sense that the characters and story of it are really good, but the actual process of doing it and going through the steps is grueling, difficult, long, confusing, and unengaging

I disagree. The quest is purposely tedious and annoying, because the easy way is kill the ghouls and tell Manny, that's it. But if you actually want to do things the right way, it's gonna cost a big effort. Also the quest is long because it's a quest intended to follow the linear path of the story and teach the players the possibilities and choices they have, basically a mini version fo the whole game. It's suposed to be frustating because being a good person who does right is frustating, and more in a world like Fallout's.

I personally don't think the gameplay is that bad, albeit, this is from someone who doesn't remember their first time playing through it. I honestly don't think it's that difficult to navigate the basement and if anything, my biggest gripe with that section is that there isn't a speech option to get passed Harland and that you cannot pick the lock to the jail (you have to grab the key to the door). Also, when it comes to the rocket repair section of the quest, do people really not know that you can go get both components at the same time?

The fact that this is unpopular baffles me shits so boring it makes watching paint dry look like fighting in Normandy. Half of its wandering round the two inn which always is tedious so many quests in all of Fallout is just are aching around a dark building. There’s no unique loot rewards fuckall. Then the revelation that the ghoul fucks ditched Chris’s leaves a bad resentful taste
