The 2022 Phillies made it to the World Series with only 87 regular season wins, one of the lowest win totals for a pennant winner in the history of Major League Baseball. With baseball's new playoff format, and other expanded postseason options looking ahead at the next half century of baseball, we can expect many more of these kinds of teams making it to the postseason and winning the World Series. With that, the answer to the question of what makes a baseball team great and is every World Series winning team deserving of it that much more difficult to answer.
In 2006, years before the relatively newer changes to MLB's playoff format, the St. Louis Cardinals won their division and eventually the World Series with only 83 regular season wins, the lowest for a World Series winning team ever. Before we look ahead to the future, we want to look to the past, and admire a team that had no business making it to the playoffs let alone winning the World Series, but they did it anyway.

My favorite playoff moment: David Freese in game 6 of the 2011 World Series. His game-tying triple and later his game-winning Homerun. Great stuff.

Danmarko I also watched it as a lad … alas, one of the worst nights of my life. After being at the G5 loss to the Giants the year before, and then they were one strike away, TWICE! Got to admit, though, that it was a heck of a series. One of the best in recent memory, if you’re not a Rangers fan.

As a Cardinal fan, I loved this one, but to be honest when I clicked on the video, I thought this was going to be about the 2011 team, since their post-season appearance was also so improbable. That's why I was so shocked this past season with the wild card series. I've been so conditioned over the years to just expect the Cards to make improbable post season runs no matter what because it seems so normal to me.

4:47 One of my favorite playoff moments was actually this series that you're critiquing which was the Padres and Cardinals. When they clenched it at home, I was there. The only reason I remember is because I had a slip that my dad needed to sign because I was in trouble at school and I didn't want to tell him about it because I knew we were going to this game. So I waited until after this game and the fact that they won to tell him that I was going to be suspended from the bus. He wasn't mad because they won. Another one was I was at the game 6 of the world series against the rangers when David freese won and it was fucking crazy. I will never ever ever forget that moment because I wanted to leave because I wanted to give up cuz I was only like 17. And my dad was like no there's still a chance they still have outs left. And he was right and ever since then I never wanted to miss a single pitch because you never know what you could miss. I'm really really sorry for the fucking novel, but you asked for my favorite sports moments and the Cardinals just always pull through. With these crazy voodoo moments, it's really hard to pick. One final edit. I think the reason that they won honestly is because everyone in St. Louis was hyped for the new stadium and it was beautiful and it was the best in the sports at the time or it felt like it. Also want to really weird family note The last three championships the Cardinals have won was my mom's senior year of high school My sister's senior year of high school And finally my senior year of high school. So I guess we'll have to wait for my kids to be seniors for the Cardinals to win is our family's running joke.

The 2013 ALCS for me as a Red Sox fan was one of the greatest series I've ever seen, especially those Ortiz and Victorino grand slams. Also worth pointing out that until 2020, game 3 of the LDS was San Diego's only playoff win against the Cardinals. Including 96 & 05, they were 1-9 against St Louis in playoffs games till 2020.

some baseball moments/topics i'm fixated on: - the 2004 ALCS from the Yankees' perspective - the Nationals' insane, last-chance World Series title run in '19 - Dodgers' underachievements in the past decade (does the Mickey Mouse ring deserve an asterisk?) - the Astros owning the Yankees - Dusty Baker (literally everything about him; he is a character, to say the least)

Couple things I’d say in response: 1) The ‘06 Cards weren’t actually that bad. There were many remnants of 100 win clubs on that roster including a World Series birth in 2004. 2) I always felt this was a nice payback for the Cards after losing to a lot of teams that didn’t win their division; in particular in 2004 after the Cards won their division by 13 games. So while I still don’t think 2nd place teams should just suddenly get a second chance to beat a team that has been beating them for the last 162 games…as a Cards fan I’m glad we are one of the teams that have taken advantage of it. And I say this knowing all too well what it feels like to be on the other side. Keep it up, love your channel!

Definitely my favorite moment was Juan Soto’s game winner in the 2019 wild card game. I remember my dad and I going to that game, and everyone in NATS park was so tense and nervous coming off our previous playoff misery. Ahh the 2006 World Series, I remember it well. As a Cardinal fan, I can recall using the term, "backed into the playoffs." They played like shit the last couple months. I think they only got in because another team lost and they were idle, if memory is correct. But the Cardinals had a lot of injuries they had to cope with that year. I believe they still had the MV3 (Pujlos,Edmonds, and Rolen), but that key players missed significant time from injuries. This is a team that had come off of two 100 + win seasons. My point is although they played poorly at times during the regular season, especially the second half of the season, and backed their asses into the playoffs, this was far from a bad team!!

As a life long Cardinals fan, that 2006 Cardinals team had no business being there. Their pythagorean win/loss was even worse at 82-79. The starting pitching was TERRIBLE after Chris Carpenter. The starting position players were also TERRIBLE besides Pujols, Rolen, and Edmonds (having a huge down year, only worth 1.3 WAR that season). Can you imagine winning a WS with yadi (53 OPS+), aaron miles (74 OPS+), david eckstein (81 OPS+), and so taguchi (78 OPS+) starting on your team? Yadi actually played like a below replacement level player that season he was so terrible with the bat (-0.2 WAR). Pujols (8.5 WAR), Rolen (5.9 WAR), and Carpenter (5.1 WAR) carried that team during the regular season. Not a single player on the team had a WAR above 1.8 besides them. We'll never see a team over perform in the playoffs by this much ever again.

This is a great list. That Ishikawa HR is so underrated. One of Joe Buck’s best calls

The '06 regular season was, for the most part, rough. The run they made in the playoffs was incredibly surprising. Tigers in 3, it was not. Had Detroit pitchers been able to throw to 1st on choppers, it could have turned out differently. Being a Cards fan in Michigan, 14 at the time, it was a fun time.

As a cardinals fan I feel like this sums us up. We get very talented rosters. But we never go over the top. Don’t have the best pitching rotations. Lots of our titles we wasn’t that good to start. Wasn’t a “favorite” as they say. N ended up working magic into the post season. And onto a title against the odds those years. It doesn’t shock me that they still are like that these days. Almost seem more hesitant to make the needed moves. But that could hopefully change this off season. We have the mvp and another guy (Nolan) who could easily be mvp also.. need a few pieces and we may be where we need to be. We shown we have a deep farm system and use the youth well. Win or lose I love this team and am not complaining, just feel we are so close.. Go Cardinals!

2006 Cardinals primary core was injured/recovering from injuries. Edmonds + Rolen. Pitching was a roller coster, they had Sidney Ponson for a few starts and then released him and picked up Weaver. 2B and LF needed to be replaced so they added Bigbie and Miles via trade with Colorado for Ray King. Then Bigbie got hurt so they added Preston Wilson after the Astros got rid of him and had a 1B playing LF for most of the season (Duncan) platooning with So Taguchi. Then they got Belliard from Cleveland for 2B. 2006 was a case of everything clicking at the right time. No they were not the BEST overall team record wise, but come postseason the offense and pitching was better than the regular season. Isringhausen blew multiple saves so they used Wainwright out of the pen instead. Yadi could barely hit in the season but he figured it out in the post-season. You also failed to mention the Cardinals had the Angel's WS heroes Scott Spiezio and David Eckstein on their team. If you also look at the 06 squad I'll bet you also find Albert Pujols had numerous game winning RBI / won several games with just his bat throughout the season.

You should do a video on the Astros. I know y’all don’t want to given them any credit for anything, but what they’re doing is incredible.

Just a note re the 2006 Cards: As a Cards fan, I think of them as an underachieving extension of the 2004 and 2005 Cardinals, who were the class of the NL. I'll concede that their record was meh, but the roster was not that dissimilar from the best team in the NL the 2 preceding years, and for that reason I think it's too easy to dismiss them as bad. I think you do a decent job of contextualizing 2006 when you point to good periods during that season, but I think the context of the 2 preceding years bears some weight too.
