After over 4 months of building, and 297 fails, the Bet-Losing Machine is finally here! It's my largest, most complex machine so far, and it lasts for almost 3 minutes! I hope you guys like it!

Behind the Scenes: • Behind the Scenes of t...
Raw Footage (no music!): • The Bet-Losing Machine...
Time taken to build: over 4 months (February through June)
Number of fails: 297
Favorite trick: shifting autotilt zigzag board
Most failed trick: triple autotilt
Most frustrating tricks: swinging track swing, spinning tube, falling brick
Normally I would put some interesting information, or my overall detailed thoughts about the machine here, but I actually already said most of that in the Behind the Scenes. So if that's something you're interested in, I highly recommend watching that. Don't let the fact that it's 20+ minutes deter you!

If you're finding that the music in the video is too much for you to handle, here is a link to the raw footage of the machine, with no music, and no editing: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TU2xKGbbP6c.html. Hopefully you can appreciate the machine a little more now! :)

This machine holds up remarkably well by today's standards. Some tricks, like the triple autotilt, actually stuck out more to me now than they did when I first watched this three years ago. The most important part of a "big" machine project like this is its legacy, and this machine definitely accomplishes that.
@joelsinventions

This is the perfect example as to why your machine style is the best. The way you manage to make these insane tricks and somehow still connect every trick together without missing any empty space, and make every trick lead perfectly into the next is beyond anything I can even comprehend. It's one thing to make cool tricks, but being able to connect every section together like pieces of a puzzle is a skill no builder has aside from you. Hands down the best machine I've ever seen. Man it's gonna be impossible to even come close to matching the level of this with my next machine
@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 7 лет назад
Thank you so much! I think that's a really interesting way to describe this machine, but not really any of my others. In other words, I think you nailed what distinguishes this machine from, say, the R&L Machine. Instead of 3 main idea tricks, there are 10 smaller tricks, but they're all combined and connected in such a way so that everything just seems like one long trick. Oh, and you absolutely will come close to matching the level of this with your machine. You blow me away with everything you make. There is no way your next machine won't be just as impressive as this.

It was truly a spectacle of chain reaction history to witness this machine when it first came out. Your style back in the day was definitely the best at the time, and this was the single greatest presentation of that style. The length is not only impressive, it's utterly immersive. Travelling through these two tables of jam-packed machine awesomeness is such an adventure. Each trick has so much attention to detail in its motions and every element is connected and puzzle-pieced together so resourcefully. That's a skill that really can't be taken for granted. This may have not aged the best for others (too much of a k'nex mess, not enough foreign objects and everything is just track tricks)- I disagree. Even though the community has been leaning towards the simpler house-wide machine style these past years, the beauty in elaborate complex mechanisms cannot be forgotten. This video, JustOfferAnySuggestion, and Mouse Trap Reinvented present a level of thoughtfulness and precision that will always blow me away and make me invested in the project. In my opinion this still deserves its recognition and to go down as one of the greatest endeavours someone in this community has ever undertaken.

Okay, this is not only the best machine I've ever seen, but the best VIDEO I've ever seen! I don't know how you come up with such amazing tricks that blow my mind every time I watch them. You are my favorite builder. Keep up the good work! Here's a list of the best tricks: Triple Autotilt: How did you make that work? This one looks really nice. Double Collapsing Tracks: Once again, a trick that has a small action, but looks nice when it happens. Swinging Ball Catapult: Favorite trick in the machine. I am making a new machine, and it has a similar trick near the start. Loop the Loops: I wondered what they were for first time I saw it :) Falling Brick: This trick definitely examples why I look up to you. This trick is one of the most creative ones in the machine. Flexing Bridge: No one can make tricks more complicated than you. Five Gears: I saw this on your livestream so I knew it was coming, but I'm still impressed with how perfectly you timed it. Flipping Lever Cup Swing: The first time I watched this I was like "WHOA! How does that work!" and I still am like that. Shifting Autotilt Board: One of the tricks that impressed me the most.That was awesome! Two Segment 420 Degree Lever: I have no clue how you think of stuff like this. Overall, this video is amazing and it's going to be a while before any videos can catch up to it.

IDK if you've noticed but my ability to comment good comments has disappeared for some reason. So I'll say this in the best way I can. You amaze me. Your ability to take these materials and visualize these crazy ways to make them move and help each other is amazing. This machine clearly has a lot of steps and sometime soon I will count them to find out just how big of a machine this is. This only reiterates what I previously said, and it's that you are the best machine builder when it comes to skill in construction. You know your materials well and are able to do endless amounts of insane things with them. I already told you what my favorite tricks were so I'll leave it at that.

There's just something I don't fundamentally understand about your machines: How do you get stuff to move the way it moves. There's no other machine builder that I've seen who can get the components in their machine to move in such a satisfyingly perfect way. To be honest, I'm kind of suspecting wizardry.

I was happy to video call you when I watched the video because it definitely made me more into it. Everything I said during the call still stands, even after watching this over and over :D Also, one more thing I noticed... across both tables, maybe less than twenty objects ever hit the ground :O That is efficiency right there. Please lose more bets. The community will be all the better for it xD
@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 7 лет назад
Flash Domino Yes! One of the things I paid close attention to for this machine was not having many of the balls fall off the table. It definitely decreased reset time (which was around 30 minutes for the entire machine anyway) and helped me not lose things. Also, at least half of the dominoes that fall off the table are attached to something that doesn't fall off the table, so it ends up swinging from the side of the table. This also made resetting easier since I didn't have to track down where each domino bounced off to.

In watching this again, I just had to comment on something I picked up on, and it’s difficult to word haha. There’s something about the second table that’s just... unlike you. Perhaps it’s the use of some stranger objects or materials due to the use of your primary stuff on table 1, but you can also see that, even just slightly, the second table isn’t as compact as your usual work. This is again due in part to your materials already used, etc. but I think it truly is a testament to your style. You’ve developed such a unique method of building that simple enlarging the scope of construction changed the final product. While it may be a slight change it certainly jumps out to me and probably a lot of other builders who have followed you for a while. And I think that’s a good thing! It shows you’ve really developed your own special way of doing things beyond the more broad styles of big tricks or whatever that, say, I or other builders have harnessed. And the table turned out just as good as the first, immediately disqualifying any opinions that may say you can only build within your one-table, compact framework. Just something I noticed about this incredible project.
@TheVarietyGuyTV

Okay I just wanted to say that I have been waiting on this FOREVER AND I AM SO HAPPY WITH WHAT I GOT. This is quite honestly your best machine yet and maybe ever because I'm not really sure how you could possibly top this. This video took me 11 minutes to watch because I kept on doing instant replays XD I also noticed something about this video and ultimately about your style. I'm not completely blown away by every single trick in the machine, just some of them, but you made the rest of the clips so enjoyable to watch by the genius aspect of them and also how well built and thought out they were. That is a HUGE advantage when it comes to your style because it shows that you can captivate an audience all the way through. My favorite tricks in this video were obviously the unexpected ones, but more specifically the k'nex structures that had moving parts with it and changed the outcome of the next step. A lot of stuff in this machine shocked me due to the fact of reusing a lot of stuff from the previous step, such as using the same ball that triggered it instead of changing to a different ball. Things like the weighted track lever that folded down to be used as a track by the ball that triggered it in the first place or the falling block that had a ball run on it on two sides. The way things moved and functioned really stuck out tome about this machine. Okay, top 5: 5. 5:42 4. 3:14 3. 3:23 2. 5:55 1. 5:23 Question: Which trick failed the most? Whether it be in the testing stage or the filming stage. Doesn't Matter. Seriously incredible job man.
@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 7 лет назад
I always like your comments because they go into a lot more detail than just "I like this trick and that trick." You pointed out something about this machine that I hadn't really thought of before. You mentioned that there were a lot of tricks in this machine that used the same ball for multiple things. I think that's because the paths for each ball were (on average) longer than they were in previous machines. Each ball has a longer path to take before it's done being used. As a byproduct of that, the ball does more things. The yellow soccer ball on the first table, for example, rides down the track dominoes, then hits the balance swing, then rolls back across the balance swing, then triggers the lever to collapse the track dominoes, then falls into a little K'nex tire, which is later pushed over by the marble falling onto the lever. And what you said about not every trick being a showstopper, I think you are exactly correct. A lot of the tricks in this machine aren't "main idea" tricks, but more like a step above a connection in terms of complexity. In other words, a lot of the tricks in this machine are more complex that traditional connections, but less complex than a main idea. An interesting consequence of that is that I don't have all that many "connections" for tricks. If I need to move a track, or release a ball, etc., the motion that does that is often part of the actual trick, and it's not done as a "connection." And in response to your Top 5, I would say my order for those tricks (from worst to best) would be #1, #4, #2, #3, #5. And my Top 5 would be: 5. 5:09 4. 5:31 3. 3:48 2. 3:23 1. 5:42

I was so excited to see this machine since I saw the first picture of just the tables on Twitter. So then last week, when I saw the release date on your Twitter, I waited in anticipation for the release of the video and then the second that it was 1:00, I refreshed my subscription list and was so excited to see that your machine was out. Yet I was still even more blown away than I expected. This was absolutely incredible. So, I really need to give you props for this. This is one of the greatest machines that I have ever seen in my life without a doubt. There was so much to this machine that amazed me. Even watching it over and over again, there are still new things that I didn't notice before. The swinging track at the beginning was insane, the track trick with the cup was insane, the shifting autotilt trick was insane...every single trick was insanely amazing and beautiful. I love this style of building and I really think that you should make a machine with THREE tables, lol. I mean, this is ridiculously amazing. This machine is too impressive to be expressed with words. So, I wish you the best of luck going to college! Where are you going? Please continue to build machines as much as possible! I really look forward to what you'll build next! Again, amazing job! Also, I think I'm coming to ISM again this year :D

Wowowowowow. I love all the flipping, turning, rotating, moving tracks. I know track tricks arent the coolest things anymore but they are still great in my book. Also your use with the gears is SO GREAT it makes me want to buy them. My one question is how did you get the balls to roll on the thing at 1:04? Anyways great machine and you have successfully have gotten me to want to get started on my CCC clips!
@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 7 лет назад
+BWRGM Nah, track tricks are still cool! As long as you do ones that nobody has ever done before. To answer your question, the balls are released at the top of the track and they are going straight and fast enough that they are able to stay on the expanding ruler without falling off.

Ariel Llama The Behind the Scenes video explains it all. It's the first thing I talk about. The story is kind of long and detailed, so it's probably better to just watch the video. But thank you so much! Track tricks and K'nex contraptions have kind of become my fortes, I guess. I'm glad you like them! They're not always easy to come up with, since finding new motions for tracks is limiting, but when I do think of something, it often turns out really cool!

I'd be really curious to see what happens if you completely switch materials. It would probably require more room than you currently have. I'd be curious to try your style myself, to see what it's like. But I'd have to spend a tonne of money and then have four months free.

Funny, it's making me think I should include some kind of track trick in my next machine...whenever that is.

I am a rube enthusiast and this is an awesome rube piece. There are so many complex moves that are artistically executed and spatially constructed. The triple/ quad usage of some of the tracks are so skillfully and thoughtfully accomplished. not only is the track well made, but the way in which it is documented is clear and concise with a single shot followed by step-by-step process enabling the viewer to really appreciate what is happening. I would love to see a camera angle looking directly down at the table as a third view to understand the planar relationship between the parts in your next vid. well done and congrats. sub and like.

Wow, this is one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten, thank you so much for taking the time to write it. It's rare to get a comment about the artistic nature of the machine. Most of my comments are either from chain reaction community members, who mainly make comments about which tricks they liked the most, or from members of the "general public," who have only a basic understanding of how much time and effort went into building something like this. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE comments from anyone, especially those offering constructive criticism. But comments like yours make me really rethink my art, and realize how my style of building comes across to the viewer. Like you mentioned, my style consists of tracks and objects that are positioned in such a way that everything fits perfectly into each other. There's a comment on this video from TheInvention11 (another machine builder whom I really think you'd enjoy if you like my stuff) who made the comparison that the way I fit my tricks together is similar to how pieces of a puzzle fit together, and I think that's pretty accurate. Unfortunately I don't have enough cameras to be able to film all my machines from the top (and I don't have a way to affix them up there, either) but I do have some photos. There are some aerial shots in this album, as well as plenty of other pictures, if you're interested: photos.app.goo.gl/YpeitxrmdUWRhj3h2 Also, I don't normally do this, but since it seems like you're pretty interested, I would recommend the Behind the Scenes video I made for this project. If you're interested in that, here's a link to that video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WMn2QIy9Ef4.html Thanks again for such a nice comment! Hope to see you around on some of my future projects!

when a piece is used over and over again it really speaks to the amount of thought and play you have put into thinking about the specific piece and what the object is, its no longer just a "track" or a just a "cup" but it becomes something else entirely. I think this specific aspect of your machines makes your pieces really unique. i wonder if you are familiar with the Japanese pitagora series. they are incredibly well done, short and to the point to show off a specific idea. They are really good at referencing this idea of "objects that are not what it is named" idea. Check out this awesome rube story the same people made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2bT0hlIjOFc.html it's called "Biisuke Ball's Big Adventure"
@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 6 лет назад
I totally agree that adding multiple uses to different elements gives them a whole new meaning. One of my favorite things to do in machines is play with people's expectations. If you expect one thing to happen, I want to make it do something totally different and unexpected. If you think this object was done being used, I want to use it again. YES!! I love Pitagora Suichi! Unfortunately a lot of videos of it have been removed from RU-vid, but my friend bought a set of 3 DVDs with a bunch of the machines on them. It also came with this really great book that shows you how to make all the elements in the videos. Biisuke Ball (and the sequel to it) is probably some of their best work, to be totally honest. Actually, the trick in this machine at 2:31 was inspired by an old Pitagora Suichi idea. Their version was a little bit different, but that was where I got the idea for it. I talk about this a little bit in the Behind the Scenes video as well.

sport stacking man 11 Practice and inspiration are the two main things. Build as much as possible and over the course of several years you will get much better. That's what happened to me. I started back in 2012 (but only started my RU-vid channel in 2014). Building as much as I have over the course of those 5 years has gotten me to the point I'm at right now. Inspiration is also key. Watching other people's machines is obvious, but inspiration can come from anywhere. I've gotten inspiration from mechanisms or motions I see in real life, movies, TV shows, and even video games. Concepts for tricks/ideas can come from anywhere, so keep an open mind. Those are the two main ways I've improved myself over the years, and continue to do so.

@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 6 лет назад
TheGoldbergGuy No you wouldn't. You think that it would be cool, but it wouldn't. It would be really boring. Besides it stifles my creative energy, which is a dumb thing to do on purpose if you ask me. I wouldn't enjoy making it at all.
@thegoldbergguy9677
@thegoldbergguy9677 6 лет назад
jackofallspades98 idk I thought that since you said in the behind the scenes that some of your favorite tricks are ones where you go outside of your comfort zone, I figured that it would be interesting to see a full length machine done this way
@jackofallspades98
@jackofallspades98 6 лет назад
TheGoldbergGuy That's true, but those kind of tricks still use K'nex. They just aren't necessarily K'nex contraptions. K'nex is just so integrated into my building style that I use it for everything: support, blocking, simple levers and releases, and complex contraptions. Trying to build without it would be miserable.
