Thank you so much! I think that's a really interesting way to describe this machine, but not really any of my others. In other words, I think you nailed what distinguishes this machine from, say, the R&L Machine. Instead of 3 main idea tricks, there are 10 smaller tricks, but they're all combined and connected in such a way so that everything just seems like one long trick. Oh, and you absolutely will come close to matching the level of this with your machine. You blow me away with everything you make. There is no way your next machine won't be just as impressive as this.

I'm probably not going to be much help, but every few months i get a twitchy need to see some sweet Rube Goldberg machine action - All I put into the search window was "Rube Goldberg machine" This time your 6 simple machines in one video was midway down on the first page of results. I was hooked!

Flash Domino Yes! One of the things I paid close attention to for this machine was not having many of the balls fall off the table. It definitely decreased reset time (which was around 30 minutes for the entire machine anyway) and helped me not lose things. Also, at least half of the dominoes that fall off the table are attached to something that doesn't fall off the table, so it ends up swinging from the side of the table. This also made resetting easier since I didn't have to track down where each domino bounced off to.

DoodleChaos Wow! Thank you so much! I like to say that compactness and complexity are my two strong suits, so I'm glad you're a fan of both aspects of my building style.

I always like your comments because they go into a lot more detail than just "I like this trick and that trick." You pointed out something about this machine that I hadn't really thought of before. You mentioned that there were a lot of tricks in this machine that used the same ball for multiple things. I think that's because the paths for each ball were (on average) longer than they were in previous machines. Each ball has a longer path to take before it's done being used. As a byproduct of that, the ball does more things. The yellow soccer ball on the first table, for example, rides down the track dominoes, then hits the balance swing, then rolls back across the balance swing, then triggers the lever to collapse the track dominoes, then falls into a little K'nex tire, which is later pushed over by the marble falling onto the lever. And what you said about not every trick being a showstopper, I think you are exactly correct. A lot of the tricks in this machine aren't "main idea" tricks, but more like a step above a connection in terms of complexity. In other words, a lot of the tricks in this machine are more complex that traditional connections, but less complex than a main idea. An interesting consequence of that is that I don't have all that many "connections" for tricks. If I need to move a track, or release a ball, etc., the motion that does that is often part of the actual trick, and it's not done as a "connection." And in response to your Top 5, I would say my order for those tricks (from worst to best) would be #1, #4, #2, #3, #5. And my Top 5 would be: 5. 5:09 4. 5:31 3. 3:48 2. 3:23 1. 5:42

It's so overwhelming oh my god. I think I've linked to that unlisted video that's just the raw footage of the machine more than any other video in my life. I seem to get a reply back about half the time that they watched it and liked it more, so I'm glad I'm doing it, but wow. Just wow. I did not expect this much hate toward my music choice.

Thank you! I'm glad I was able to exceed an expectation that was already "I expect this to exceed my expectations." You also managed to list my top 2 tricks, so I'm glad that people like the tricks that I like! I will be going to Hampshire College next year. +BWRGM Nah, track tricks are still cool! As long as you do ones that nobody has ever done before. To answer your question, the balls are released at the top of the track and they are going straight and fast enough that they are able to stay on the expanding ruler without falling off.

Ariel Llama The Behind the Scenes video explains it all. It's the first thing I talk about. The story is kind of long and detailed, so it's probably better to just watch the video. But thank you so much! Track tricks and K'nex contraptions have kind of become my fortes, I guess. I'm glad you like them! They're not always easy to come up with, since finding new motions for tracks is limiting, but when I do think of something, it often turns out really cool!

I'd be really curious to see what happens if you completely switch materials. It would probably require more room than you currently have. I'd be curious to try your style myself, to see what it's like. But I'd have to spend a tonne of money and then have four months free.

Funny, it's making me think I should include some kind of track trick in my next machine...whenever that is.

Wow, this is one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten, thank you so much for taking the time to write it. It's rare to get a comment about the artistic nature of the machine. Most of my comments are either from chain reaction community members, who mainly make comments about which tricks they liked the most, or from members of the "general public," who have only a basic understanding of how much time and effort went into building something like this. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE comments from anyone, especially those offering constructive criticism. But comments like yours make me really rethink my art, and realize how my style of building comes across to the viewer. Like you mentioned, my style consists of tracks and objects that are positioned in such a way that everything fits perfectly into each other. There's a comment on this video from TheInvention11 (another machine builder whom I really think you'd enjoy if you like my stuff) who made the comparison that the way I fit my tricks together is similar to how pieces of a puzzle fit together, and I think that's pretty accurate. Unfortunately I don't have enough cameras to be able to film all my machines from the top (and I don't have a way to affix them up there, either) but I do have some photos. when a piece is used over and over again it really speaks to the amount of thought and play you have put into thinking about the specific piece and what the object is, its no longer just a "track" or a just a "cup" but it becomes something else entirely. I think this specific aspect of your machines makes your pieces really unique. i wonder if you are familiar with the Japanese pitagora series. they are incredibly well done, short and to the point to show off a specific idea. They are really good at referencing this idea of "objects that are not what it is named" idea. I totally agree that adding multiple uses to different elements gives them a whole new meaning. One of my favorite things to do in machines is play with people's expectations. If you expect one thing to happen, I want to make it do something totally different and unexpected. If you think this object was done being used, I want to use it again. YES!! I love Pitagora Suichi! Unfortunately a lot of videos of it have been removed from RU-vid, but my friend bought a set of 3 DVDs with a bunch of the machines on them. It also came with this really great book that shows you how to make all the elements in the videos. Biisuke Ball (and the sequel to it) is probably some of their best work, to be totally honest. Actually, the trick in this machine at 2:31 was inspired by an old Pitagora Suichi idea. Their version was a little bit different, but that was where I got the idea for it. I talk about this a little bit in the Behind the Scenes video as well.

sport stacking man 11 Practice and inspiration are the two main things. Build as much as possible and over the course of several years you will get much better. That's what happened to me. I started back in 2012 (but only started my RU-vid channel in 2014). Building as much as I have over the course of those 5 years has gotten me to the point I'm at right now. Inspiration is also key. Watching other people's machines is obvious, but inspiration can come from anywhere. I've gotten inspiration from mechanisms or motions I see in real life, movies, TV shows, and even video games. Concepts for tricks/ideas can come from anywhere, so keep an open mind. Those are the two main ways I've improved myself over the years, and continue to do so.

K'nex is just so integrated into my building style that I use it for everything: support, blocking, simple levers and releases, and complex contraptions. Trying to build without it would be miserable.

DaksDominos It's the kind of thing that I could do in college. I could build each of the setups on the weekends that I'm home, and the rest could be done at school, since no other building is required. So no promises, but you might see Fail Factor Season 2 sometime early next year.

deltaangelfire I'm sorry. 😔 Unfortunately there's no other way to film everything in one continuous shot without moving around a lot. If it helps, there is a version of the machine later in this video that shows each step from a static camera angle. Maybe that helps?
