Casey's (Case CX17C) strength is put to good use digging a large area for footers for a homeowner's DIY patio project. The finance committee finally gives in and let's Tim buy a laser level which does prove to be useful for this big digging project.

Something else you could have done to level the excavator while digging, is to turn the tracks 90 degrees and use the dozer blade to level Casey. It does require more work to move.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
+Travis Moore don't have much stability if I try sideways digging. ...need that blade in front to stabilize.

No need to pile dirt up to make yourself level. You should just turn your tracks sideways and use the blade to level yourself to dig the vertical ditch.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
+01Brever as I said in another comment, sideways digging doesn't work so well. Really need the blade in front to stabilize.
@01Brever
@01Brever 6 лет назад
That is correct, but sometimes you have just have to turn them and take smaller bites to make things a little more comfortable and convenient to yourself. Every job is different and there could be a lot of different ways to do each job. Thanks again for posting these videos. You do great work and I enjoy watching them. Main thing is to stay safe out there.

Real excavators don't have blades and should always dig with the main idliers and not on drive sprokets and in tight areas ofcourse you might gotta dig sideways and to level yourself out your take a scoop and dump it under which ever track you need to level

Good looking machine looks the same size as my 17D deere handy size for what I do I have a 16"tooth bucket and I also got a 30" ditching bucket from a 27d made to fit because they didn't make one for the 17d. Handles the 30" no problem I use that bucket all the time because I can move dirt so much faster. Nice video. Is dangerous being in a trench people have lost their lives. I almost got caught once trench caved when I thought it was Solid. Just jumped back in time and just caught my leg luckily. Be careful!

Just have to say that's a lot of exposure hope it doesn't rain before he gets it poured. Perfect tool for the job, a backhoe that digs like that would take a 40-50 HP tractor and definitely not as handy. That Lazer level is a nice addition, the finance committee is really coming through. Great video as always.

Put your spoils (excavated materials) about 3' away from the excavation. And so you can see your lines when digging put you bucket flat to the ground and knock the loose dirt back in the trench to take out with the next bucket.

Hi Tim, Good equipment (Topcon). Getting ready for some leveling. Topcon Laser, Topcon Pole mount 360 degree reciever mounted on box blade, with Topcon blue tooth magnetic mount display in cab. This way I wont have to look backward at reciever mounted to three point with blade, Raising, lowering watching only display in cab. Full automatic is $5k more, Hopping manual will be just fine for 1/4 acre. Here is a magnetic reviever for back hoe Topcon LS-B10 Machine Mounted Laser Receiver 57110 mounts to backhoe for level trench. Case will be happy to see this video.

Awesome video buddy. Has that case been a good machine?
@D0csavage1
@D0csavage1 6 лет назад
Hello When starting a trench you scrape off in layers, from the furthest reach of the boom all the way back to the machine. This will ensure the track is going straight and not starting to veer off course. To obtain a nice flat level, use the boom and the bucket in unison by moving the lever over towards the bucket to crowd it slightly. That is you keep the bucket flat as you start bringing the arm back towards your machine. It takes a bit of practice but once that skill is achieved you can grade with ease. Another good tip, if your machine wobbles because you are sitting on an uneven surface while digging. Wiggle the tracks slightly this will help the machine bed into a more level surface. A wider bucket without the teeth would be a great addition to your machine to help move the piled dirt quickly and for levelling large areas. These machines are worth their weight in gold. Congratulations on your new addition to the digging family :)

Turn the machine sideways and use the blade to level the excavator. Note dirt should be two foot away from you ditch and no one should be in a 5’ ditch. Always safety first! Good job on the dig.
@dringer3888
@dringer3888 6 лет назад
May I suggest, that the next time you're on uneven ground, orient Casey with the tracks perpendicular to your trench. Then use the blade to lift Casey to a level position from the downward side. By doing this you will also loose stability, front to back, from your digging direction as your tracks are now perpendicular and you have the shorter span towards your digging direction. Casey is a great addition to the team!

Love your guys vids but please read up on some osha trenching rules at depths 5 foot or more u either need to slope the trench or have shoring If someone is gonna be in the trench your better off staying out of the trench and you need to keep your spoils at least 2 foot from the edge of the excavation. As crappy as that dirt was it could have caved off on your wife that stuff happens quick. I just dont want to see one of u guys getting hurt. I Hope ur working for cash and dont have a company for this work your doing cause osha would have a field day over this them guys don't play around.lol be safe u guys

I put some inside, but most outside. I didn't have much on the inside until he had me dig that 4x4x3 hole by the back door. I was not expecting that one. Digging to the side (blade not directly in front of you) doesn't work very well. really need the blade directly in front to dig effectively.

Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a big hole to dig, in order to build my house. After seeing the prices of rentals and the crazy prices of paying someone to do it, I was wondering if it's plausible to buy a mini excavator and do the job myself. I have more than a month to do it, and the whole thing will be around 10 feet deep to the bottom layer. Around 40 feet times 35 feet is the outside dimensions of the construction hole... Is this plausible? Subcontractors are asking in the range of 15.000 dollars and I can buy a brand new mini excavator for around 10.000 and probably sell it afterwards for 6-7 easy. Would save me a lot of money if plausible, and now with the Corona I have all the time I need. I have no experience on the excavators but am smart and tech savy
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 4 года назад
You won’t find one that will dig 10’ deep for $10,000 brand new! What are you going to do with all the dirt you dig out of the hole? It will take a huge space to store it. I suspect with no experience, you should allow someone else to help you. Where are you located?
@Luka_menorykee
@Luka_menorykee 4 года назад
@@TractorTimewithTim it doesn't have to dig that deep as there is room for the ramp no problem. I am a civil engineer, have seen it a thousand times, but never done it myself. Berlin, Germany, I already found plenty in range 8-11 k, just not sure if it's plausible
@Luka_menorykee
@Luka_menorykee 4 года назад
I've only seen the big ones in action, so I am wondering about the mini ones, have no idea of their strength and voluma
@Luka_menorykee
@Luka_menorykee 4 года назад
@@TractorTimewithTim as far as all the dirt goes, about 1/5 will go back after the basement is done, about 1/3 will go to build a step-wise garden, a ramp and a car port, level with ground floor (around 4 feet high). I should be left with 2/3 to 1/2 of all that we dug out. There are companies that transport those, I would pay for that part, and there's a lot of private people that would take a part away for free. So I figured I could do the works real carefully with a mini excavator (there's some installations that need to be patiently cleared away, a shovel for the most part). I am just not sure if the quantity of the job is implausible or if I am overestimating the machine since I've never seen it in action. You seem to be able to do almost everything with it, so I was wondering if there are limits to the machine... Also, a lot of companies selling their used equipment cheap now because of Corona, but I am not sure if that's a risk worth taking since I never owned or maintained one, so I figured buying a small new one should be ok? 1 tonne -1.2 tonne machines approximately

Are you folks contractors? It’s not safe to be in a hole that deep with out shoring up the sides.also when digging on small slope turn the machine side ways and use your blade to level the machine, that’s a sweet machine keep the fun coming

Just saw this video. Good job. Get used to building a level area for the excavator to work from. Talk to the finance department about getting a 36-40 inch grading bucket and a atv dump trailer while it won't replace the JD you can get a lot done with those items. Keep on having FUN

bkrgi that guy in the video is lifting the machine on purpose just to try and make his point! Anyone that knows how to operate a machine this will not happen too them with the blade in front plus if you are digging really tough dirt/clay blade in the rear will not hold you. You will just pull yourself forward every time. Don't care what the video says I have put hundreds of hours on one and this guy is wrong!
@randyurrea2535
@randyurrea2535 6 лет назад
I’ve put thousands of hours on mini, rookies put the blade in front... blade just gets in your way too much when it’s in front of you and you lose break out force. Also as you back up you can knock down uneven ground.
@timbell3843
@timbell3843 6 лет назад
Any good operator knows u have to adapt to the situation. If you are a good operator it doesn't matter where blade is. In a perfect world you would dig with it in front of you but it's not a perfect world.
