Totally. A really good interview can be rare these days. His questions are pointed but open ended, not leading but deeply revealing. Realistic and optimistic at the same time. He respects and admires his interviewees, and the feeling is mutual.
I'm watching this interview tonight because David Cosby has passed away. It could not have been a better interview with anyone but Dan Rather. Tonight I learned things I did not know about them. I laughed and enjoyed it so much. RIP David Crosby. You were one of 3 very unique musicians, that produced some great music. You will not be forgotten.
When 1965 arrived, I was 12. My dad was a medic in Vietnam from 1964-1969 when he came home alive. Music was an import and still is a big part of my life. But these 4 people were a big part of my life. I never met them, but their music did. Judy Collins, Melissa Manchester, jimmy Hendrix, The Jollies, Buffalo Springfield, Mamas and Pappas,Fifth Dimension and many others all had a profound influence on me.
SicilyNY, the problem with The Rolling Stones is, in my humble opinion, that while their music is great, Mick is not the most talented singer. In fact, his voice grates on the ears after a while.
I had the pleasure spending a half a day with David Crosby, and yet I knew almost nothing about him. What you see in this interview, is how he really is. I was his driver, and he told me just about everything about his life in a nutshell. He said he’s grateful in this interview, and that’s the feeling he conveyed to me. I could tell he was happy to be alive, and cherished every moment. Btw, He treated me for lunch at a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant on Milpas in Santa Barbara, and then I dropped him off at his home in the Santa Ynez mountains. He let me go in his home, to use his bathroom too. I thought that was pretty cool too.
@@rv6205 I thought I conveyed that in my comments, that he is down to earth. Yes, no rock star attitude. He even let me come in his house to use his bathroom. I saw pictures and awards why I was in his house.
Yep, my father who passed away now spent an entire flight with him from China back to the U.S. and he said the exact same thing. Talked all about his life and problems etc. Real nice guy my father said.
I am in my 82nd year on this planet so I have heard and grown up with a lot of different styles of music. Listening to my parents play all of the big band sounds of the 30s and 40s and then the lyrical 50s and the beginings of rock and roll, folk, blues, hard and metal rock and all of the rest. Through all of that there have been individuals and groups that have never left my muscial thoughts. Crosby, Stills and Nash is always at the top of that list. There music and presentation of that music is and still is unique. A true blend of individuals into one seamless sound. Individual but complementing. Together but still separate. A rainbow of sound.
That's awesome that you've seen and experienced so much. I'm close to 50 and what gets to me is missing the times that passed and wishing there was a way to go back there and see people who are gone or experience those times again.
@@Magdalene777 RU-vid is your friend, you will find many here and of course there are the classic films with some great music, especially the big bands. It is nice to 'see' them, I totally get it
I'm doing the same thing with tears. What a great interview and what an amazing time in our lives. Both good and bad, (Kent State). The music still brings me joy.
David Crosby was not afraid of the truth. What a great loss, not only for his music but for someone who has no problem taking responsibility for himself. He is an inspiration to me
The music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is timeless. What a gift we've been given by them all. I'm 75, have sung rock and roll since I was 12. Their music is alive and well in Washington Square Park to this day. RIP David Crosby......thank you for all you, and your music brothers and sisters have given us.
I was born in 1951 and yes, by the late 60's I knew this music , i was a hippie ( still am ), it sorta became a soundtrack for my life ......I'm so grateful for CSN&Y , JT, JM, AND ALL the musicians of that era .....it was a great time to be alive ! !
The industry. as well as the Beatles encouraged creativity. Consider that leader of the Rolling Stones. Brian Jones did with using a multitude of instruments that wouldn't even be considered today. Listen to Like a Rainbow, melotron, guitar.cello, brass and percussion all done by Brian. Also for those who didn't know, a toy piano was used .
It's January 19, 2023. David Crosby passed away today. In the Big Interview, he says to Dan Rather, "I would like to be learning something new and growing the day that I die." I wish David was here to tell us what he learned today.
His passing hit me hard in a way. I grew up listening to this guy. His music touches my soul. It's like losing someone you love even though I didn't know him. Your life kind of flashes back with all your deepest distant memories of friends, high school sweetheart, fun times you endured that you hold close to your heart. David Crosby, you will be remembered forever and truly missed.
Yes I grew up in the '60;s, too. Proud to be a hippie and a member of the church of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Kinda sorry Young wasn't here for this.
I agree with them. At 67, I am still a hippie. The values of the beats and hippies are still important. The only difference now is that I realize those values will never be brought to fruition. It was gut wrenching to grow up and realize that. I still strive oin my own way to fulfill those values daily.
I agree with you . Thank you for articulating that. As you say, the current culture does not support the hippie and beat values, so one must live them in one’s own life.
Graham Nash was absolutely correct about the importance of music in our schools. Communities make a huge mistake when they deprive their kids of this experience. Great interview by Dan Rather of three of our most influential and delightful musicians ever!! 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Maybe 15 years or so ago I had the pleasure of having Mr. Crosby aboard my flight from LA to Honolulu. He was kind enough to say hello to us pilots and brag about his landing that morning (private pilot and had flown himself into LA that morning.) Said “I’m Dave.” Of course yer friggin Dave. Really nice guy. Couldn’t have been more down to earth.
Rest in Peace, David Crosby, a great influence for my generation. Together with Stephen, Graham and Neil, he brought music live and on vinyl, wrote songs, harmonized in performances that changed music history. As he said, they wanted to leave THE edge, he did. Beyond the drugs, the stint in jail, the famous feuds, David survived, sustained and stayed, for over four decades. Thank you for the music.
I met David Crosby April 1970, Genesee Community College, Batavia New York... I did the light show for the Byrds... After the show he invited the entire stage crew to his Holliday Inn room.. We smoked, he played and all 15 of us had a ball in that small room.. David was the best of the best!!!! RIP David!!
Excellent interview. I graduated high school in the mid 90s but all these iconic 60s-70s songs were beloved and are still very much a part of my life's soundtrack. RIP David 🌻🌹💐❤️🌞 Despite everything, you made it all the way to the year 2023...yet gone too soon.
At 62 watching this interview is evoking a range of emotions. All these guys simply worthy legends. So good to have grown up with this and other timeless music as a huge part of my personal soundtrack. Wishing I had gotten to ever more live shows back in the day. Now experiencing the sorrow of loss as profoundly influential musical heros are passing on. Thanks for the memories and the magic guys. Grateful always...
@@kathleendanford2631 Very strange, scary, immensely disappointing times we now live in. In my opinion... Our beautiful planet and the other living beings, the animals, the plants, we share it with, deserve soooo much better than where us humans are headed, and imposing on the world. So selfish. Peace to you as well.
As a Woodstock veteran who was exposed to the greats in person, this group personified the meaning of Woodstock. From their wonderful rendition of the song “Woodstock” to their incredible harmony which is what Woodstock” was all about but most of all, there was a very peaceful vibe that these guys produced in all that listened to their music. It was so distinct that one could only recognize the true artists they were. Great art is designed to evoke an emotion, without a doubt no one has ever evoked unity and harmony as these artists have!
DON'T DISMISS THE BEE GEES, BARRY, MAURICE AND ROBIN WERE MAGNIFICENT HARMONIZERS, THEY COULD TAKE YOU TO ANOTHER WORLD WITH THEIR MAGICAL VOICES. AND, OF COURSE, THE BEATLES. WHO WERE ALWAYS RECREATING THEIRSELVES, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!
They are 1 person, they are 2 alone, they are 3 together, they are 4 each other. Could those lyrics have been about their band? Only to trip at the sound of goodbye. Genius
I know I’m much younger than many of the people commenting here, but I grew up with my Dad in particular listening to their music so I’ve know it since as far back as I can remember. I’ve come to appreciate even more as an adult and choosing to listen to them on my own. There are no harmonies existing that can compare to them. The world has been lucky to experience these talented people. Im really enjoying these interviews and getting a more in depth glimpse into the life and times of these men. The world has lost an incredible talent, incredible spirit, incredible part of the music world with David’s passing. May he rest in peace.
I cannot put into words the feeling of "wholeness", the feeling of "this is all I will ever need" that I get whenever I listen to their music as well as the hundreds and hundreds of interviews these men have done over the past decades. They are each a treasure and the 3 of them together will never be matched. I thank God that I was able to see CSN in concert at least one time before God started to take them home.
I think many if us would do the same in that situation. It was an honest thing to do but at the same time manipulative. In this case manipulation didnt work
@@lastnamefirst4035 he wrote it because the judge sending him to jail for a year saved his life and he wanted to thank the judge and tell him that he was a success case because of the judges sentence.
Dan Rather proves again that he was a journalist extraordinaire! David, Stephen and Graham: Your songs were/are the soundtracks of our lives. Thank You!
I’ve followed Croz since early in The Byrds years. His voice is heaven sent. In 2009, while on vacation in FL, I was lucky enough to meet him and his wife Jan walking around EPCOT. It was surreal because he had no security around him and he blended into the crowd just like a regular tourist. He had his signature long hair tucked up under his big Panama hat and a Hawaiian shirt on, but I’d recognize that mustache ANYWHERE! I apologized for asking, but I had to get his autograph, just like a friggin’ teenager. I was so fan-boy’ed out! David’s been my musical hero since I was a kid! And here he was, standing right in front of me...He was so incredibly gracious about giving me the autograph, and then he thanked ME for being HIS FAN!!! Un-freakin’-believable! Later on that day, as coincidence would have it, I saw him again...this time he was seated just a few seats over from me at the American Gardens pavilion, essentially a concert bandshell on the lake. We watched Davy Jones of The Monkees (of all acts!) do his “Flower Power” musical show set. Talk about a crazy set of circumstances... A Rock & Roll ICON and a Pop Star I remember watching on TV as a kid... So bizarre...but truly memorable.
I'm younger, 58, yet I fell in love with CS&N while in High School. I agree that MUSIC is actually VERY IMPORTANT. It gives you a way to learn about life, history... expressing your feelings publicly. Crosby, Stills & Nash I LOVE your music!
Yes yes yes! My older bf) introduced me to them.....I couldn't believe I'd missed out so long!!! Though I was barely 20 & he must've been close to 28) good vibes ! Love....
My god the three of them compliment each other’s strengths so perfectly. You can clearly see what each of them brings to the “thing” that is CSN. And holy crap David is funny as hell.
SO right! That is exactly how I feel - when I listen to CSNY, it makes me melancholy because it takes me back to that era and the music was incredible. These guys should be in the Hall of Fame!
I would to sing and harmonize to their De Je Vu album so well that I thought I could actually be part of this Group! What GREAT harmony they had. Nobody harmonized better.
I'm currently recording an album and it wouldn't be as good as I think as it's gonna be without the influence of these geniuses. In trying to harmonize with them listening to that album I've improved my singing in a way I never could've imagined. Carry on is my top moment in music EVER
THE HARMONY OF CS&N WAS SO ABSOLUTELY ENTRANCING THAT ONCE YOU HEARD IT, YOU WERE HOOKED. BY BODY AND SOUL, THE HARMONY THAT THESE WONDERFUL GUYS HAD TOGETHER WAS IN REALITY A WONDER OF THIS WORLD. THEIR MUSIC WILL GO ON FOR MANY GENERATIONS AFTER THEIR PASSING. I JUST HOPE I GET TO HEAR THEM IN HEAVEN ENTERTAINING THE ONES WHO MAKE IT THERE. THEIR VOICES SEEM TO ME LIKE FOUR OR FIVE FRENCH HORNS PLAYING TOGETHER. UNIQUE. BEAUTIFUL. AND SOULFULLY ELONGATING HEARTS WITH THAT SOUND OF HEAVENLY HARMONY. IF AMERICA CAN LAST ANOTHER DECADE WITHOUT BEING DESTROYED BY OUR GREEDY SELVES, CS&N WILL HAVE DONE THE BEST THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BY MUSICIANS....JUST LISTEN TO THE LYRICS OF WOODSTOCK, SOUTHERN CROSS, TEACH YOUR CHILDREN, OUR HOUSE...IT JUST DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT. DAVID CROSBY IS MY HERO. 🥲
@@stevescontriano860 what does that even mean?does that take away from the quality of the interview?did you even read what this is about?can you read?omg
Responsible for so many huge moments in rock. Introduced George Harrison to Ravi Shankar, introduced Jim McGuinn to Charlie Parker, which became the genesis for the crazy lead in “8 Miles High”, instrumental in so much of pop culture. Well done, sir.
So glad he was in my lifetime of musical memories and genius creators that left a mark...He scratched itches in lots of people...as they could never deny his existence, or impact on them...or the lasting gift he gave to all of us.......To everything ....turn..turn...turn..a time to be born...a time to die....(this was his)....Now, 8 miles high...RIP David Crosby...never gone, just less vocal.
As an Aussie CSN and Y were the music we listened too downunder through the 70's and still listen to now. Just brilliant! Add The Eagles, Jackson Browne, America, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and others from that time....an era that will never be repeated or reach such heights....
Glenn Payne..... thought highly unlikely. Wouldn’t it be be nice to hope, or believe for such like minded, talented group of artists for an era in the future? Thanks for making me think of this...!! MAC
Cheers! Same here... wish I could go back to the mood and feeling of that time . All those guys made me pick up a guitar back then. Still playing 40 years later trying to revive that feeling...
He couldn't be anybody else, for better or worse, he had to be true to himself. I don't think you can expect any better than that. As a young person fighting to get into the music world and determined to do it with as much integrity as possible, David Crosby was a touchstone and a guide for what to hang onto and what to avoid if possible. A lot of these guys went to places most people can't go and still survive let alone create art!!!😳
I just finished listening to Dan Rather's great interview with David, Stephen and Graham......and also as they included gracious comments concerning their fourth partner Neil. What a lovely time these four had as Dan maste4fully guided the questions and comments. My only regret is that Neil wasn't there to be included. Great job and great careers, guys! So sad that David died less than two weeks ago....... I graduated High School in June of 1969 and my best friend with whom I share the same birthday, went to Woodstock and actually heard these guys live! Ted Schempp
One of the best interviews I've ever watched. Three legendary musicians, the perfect host, great questions, non-intrusive editing, not a single wrong detail; outstanding piece of media, really.
Except that N. Young couldn't take the time must be a reason for that absence I also saw an interview where Crosby was call NOT A NICE MAN by one of the trio. Must of kissed and made up.
@@larryh.4629 Yeah it could've been stellar if Neil was there too. About Cosby, it wouldn't surprise me if he took the interview while he was living a bad time. Was it before or after this one?

CSN (and Later CSNY) were my childhood. They led me to Gram Parsons, Emmy Lou Harris, Manassas, Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, Poco, and on and on. Thank You CSNY, I am truly grateful for all the music.
My God. The emotions this brings out in me. "love is better than hatred. That peace is better than war. That maybe we should take care of each other; like be each other's keeper. Maybe we should take care of our environment."
Good show, providing the date. The very first thing anybody can do if they are going to be a chronicler is provide a date. It's all meaningless without context, but those who post without basic info go on being assholes... hacks, really. It's like 'You had one job!'...
I can't believe that I am just now seeing this 2 years later! This was my music in my late teens, early 20's, recorded on cassette tapes on extended trips to Baja combined with my best life adventures. Thank you CSNY !! I always wonder if the artists really grasp the gravity of the contributions to my/our lives their music made. Great interviews too.
Norma Tible I work at a small 2,000 seat theater back in the late 80’s. I saw a lot of comedians and musicians of the day, how they really are back stage. I always gave them a wide berth for judging who they really were. Not all were nice people. Maybe they were just in a bad mood at that time. Joan Rivers was easily the best. Stills was easily the worst. He blamed the people in attendance, the sound of theater, the way he was treated by the theater. Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Wayne Newton and Kool and the Gang had the same crowd (most were season ticket holders) the acoustics were the same and they were treated the same. The only thing different was Stills was an ass.
@@chrisconley8583 Not to make excuses for him, but after watching this interview I wonder whether Still's hearing issues made him more of a jerk? Maybe he didn't mean to be.
NavvyMom there’s 2 sets of people in any show. There’s the talent and then there’s the production people. There are 2 rules: Production people never bother the talent, if they need to speak with talent, always go through proper channels. Talent doesn’t behave like an ass, if they do, they automatically lose because for the most part there’s always more production people at any given show than there is talent. Stills knew better, the show was over, nothing was going to change that. He knew that the best option was to get out of there, get in the car, voice his concerns to his management and next year, say “thanks but no thanks, sorry we have a scheduling conflict” if they want him back next year.
I enjoyed these interviews! Sad to see that David after his passing had not talked to his band mates in several years! Thanks to you all! Remember, "We are but a moments sunlight fading in the grass"
I would suggest you watch his recent DVD Remember My Name. I've had the pleasure of meeting him a few times & made a couple custom knives for him . His voice is a treasure that he loves to share. His passion for the "Real America" one nation indivisible for which it stands is indisputable. I'm proud to know him as a friend.
@@stevehill766 I've watched it a few times, Just as recently today on Satellite that and Laurel Canyon, Both amazing accounts of what it was like being with CSN and CSNY from the beginning and just what it also was to truly experience the 60s and 70s with some of the best musicians of are time
I'm fortunate to have seen CSN&Y live but there were two points on film that - for me at least - summed up their natural ability to harmonize. One was after their performance of Suite Judy Blue Eyes at Woodstock when they said "Thank you". The other was on this video when they said "No". Three words in total but all spontaneously in synch and in key.
Three brilliant minds and personalities, so different and so complementary one to another in producing top quality things like never had happened before in music. The interviewer highlights it very clearly. Rest in harmony, David Crosby.
My sonis 100% deaf in left ear, 20% in right and can only hear certain decibels...it's a very hard life at any age. My boy was 2.5 yrs old and it was a dumb accident that took his hearing. He too will be totally deaf at some point. He's 40 now.
@@sicilyny5375 Sad... but this was an inspiring interview and audiology is improving all the time. Imagine all the music Stills has made and not heard it 100% ever, less and less all the time.
Whether it was the three or the four when they came together they rated a ten on the scale of music for generations. That was a huge treat to listen to their stories about their journey of music.
CSN and Y were so influential during my school years and I'm talking about late 80's early 90's. A school friend who I studied with kept on playing their tracks constantly. I'll never forget asking him to rewind 'You don't have to cry' over and over again. I'm still a fan now and will continue to be. They simply brought joy and happiness into my life, especially during those sometimes hard times. Thank you CSNY for your great music and thank you Father in heaven for allowing these special people to change the world by bringing all people closer together. Peace and love✌🏾
These guys are old but this is the most energetic interview I have ever seen! They can hardly wait to talk. Stills does not interview much but in this one he more than made up for it. The words just pour out from all of them. Proud, gratefull, noticeable in a decent way and humours. The harmony and guitar work are unmistakeable. Thanks boys and utube.
We WILL remember his name; grieving David Crosby. There will never be the melodic harmonies of another Crosby, Stills, and Nash in my lifetime. RIP David.
Indeed there will never be the likes of these 3 again making sweet harmonies...and David's ethereal voice was what made it work for CSN(Y), the Byrds and his Skytrails & Lighthouse bands. We were so fortunate to live through these decades and hear his & their musical gifts.
However it happened, thank god they got together. There are certain voices that blend in a way that transcends the notes and harmonies they sing. Add in the incredible songwriting and arrangements and it was pure magic. It's the old saying about when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Never more true than with Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young).
Stephen Stills looks pretty good !! You can kinda tell those who drugged harder than others as well.... also I've seen him play w other studio musicians as well.
The story I heard is stills and Nash were at pool party and Crosby heard them sing and he joined in and told them I think were going places .and they sure did !Rip
In the sixties my older brother used to play these guys albums all the time,I was into the Monkees and the Partridge family.my brother and this band opened my mind and love of music.Thank you, boys.
I just want to say thanks to a young lady that was nice enough to attend a CSNY show with me in Phoenix 1974. It was our first date. She was so incredibly beautiful. The boys put on a great show and we were a part of rock and roll history together!
Stephen Stills album Manassas is in my top ten list of the very best albums. Listen to this treasure from start to finish, relaxed and not distracted. A beautiful gift of poetry and sound. Thank you thank you thank you. 💐
Yes - THIS! And as I alluded to elsewhere - just as it's no freak coincidence that Crosby has left his mark on TWO different groups that have routinely been referred to as 'America's Beatles', it's also no accident that Chris Hillman has been front and center in THREE all timers. It's a near impossible task for me to decide which I could call my favorite.
And the story apparently goes, just as the Manassas album was starting to take off, the record label decided to pull all the promotional budget from it so it would underperform and push Stills to agree to tour again with CSN&Y.
Reading the comments are heartfelt it is a testament to all our lives growing up back then. Once a hippie always a hippie. I have tears feeling all the flashbacks of my life and seeing how many others of you are out there also feeling those same thoughts and tears God Bless🌺
I remember being 5 years old, in the backseat of our Ford Galaxy 500 gazing out the window listening to those amazing voices and using my imagination as to what these songs meant to me while gazing out the window... Fast forward to the 80s and being 19 years old and I could NOT wait for the premiere of Southern Cross on MTV... so lucky to have grown up listening to this band!
