I know there's no chance of this happening but I dream about Chance converting this into a smoother ride with airtime similar to what Morgan did with Phantom's Revenge. That would be so cool.

By far and away the most impressive thing about the Big One is the fact that it exists, period. The plots of land the park had to work with were microscopic, and if you were to look at pictures of the park before this ride was built, you'd never imagine that they'd ever build anything close to this scale. Unfortunately, this is a double edged sword. Originally, Geoffrey Thompson (the then owner of the park) did want to make the Big One more akin to Magnum, wanting to fill it with ejector hills, but the spatial constraints due to there not being enough straightaway space, as well as design limitations due to it being an Arrow, meant that these ramps you see today were quite literally the best they could've done with what they had. It does sting that the ride's layout had to suffer due to its limitations, but at the same time, that's what makes the ride impressive regardless. I've had plenty of rides on it of wildly varying quality, but at the end of the day, I still really like it and have tremendous respect for the park for having such an ambitious project pay off, even if it didn't age the best.
@MatthewRambles
@MatthewRambles 10 месяцев назад
Exactly. I respect the CS review and everything but to me it looks like Magnum had the freedom of Cedar Point to work with whilst Big One didn’t have the length of land to work with and had to squeeze its way around, though and over Watson Road, Dipper, Log Flume, Roller Coaster, Steeplechase etc whilst not upsetting the “say no to BO” brigade and making sure it integrated well into the park
@MondoCoasters
@MondoCoasters 10 месяцев назад
@@MatthewRambles That "Say No to the BO" Brigade thing sounds new to me. Was there really that much pushback against the Big One's construction back in '94?
@MatthewRambles
@MatthewRambles 10 месяцев назад
@@MondoCoasters Oh yes, I can’t remember where I’ve heard it but I think there was some push back from people at the time. I don’t know if it was nearby residents or whether it was pleasure beach purists. Other enthusiasts might know, I’m relatively new to it all
@themightyimp08
@themightyimp08 10 месяцев назад
No real pushback, and it's a condition of buying or renting a property in the area that you won't have any way of complaining about noise it sightlines.. .the real pushback happened when they wanted to put a cable car from a distant car park to the pleasure beach, which would have gone across loads of residential property gardens and houses. Safe to say that didn't get final approval

If you think the first drop is too much today, imagine how it was originally before they re-profiled it in 1997 to reduce the stress on the trains and track. Look up a POV from 1994 to see the difference.

The “English company” that is continuing to retrack the big one is also retracking Colossus at Thorpe. The company name is Taziker, and since Ive ridden the 2 rides they’ve refurbished: I can confirm they’ve replicated the original Arrow/ Intamin track really well

I’ll be surprised if anyone has done the back row more than me 😂 Stopped counting how many times I was going on it in 2009 when I reached 1000 laps, probably done it somewhere between 100-400 times a season since (excluding 2020). 99% of the time I do the back row. Since doing Magnum XL-200, it’s just not been the same sadly. Magnum is significantly better, and the Big One has become a lot less enjoyable in recent years due to the rougher areas.

To me, the Big One is decent fun ride once you see it for what it is, an oversized mine train. Objectively it's a 5/10, the speed, heingt and views of the park are fun with some cool headchoppers and near misses. The Big One is a great night ride especially during the Blackpool Illuminations and is best ridden in the front row as the views and speed sensation are the best and it helps you to brace for the elements which makes the ride a lot smoother. The fact that it's a classic and historical coaster makes me overlook some flaws. I'm glad you touched on the cultural impact, most people in the UK have been on it or know someone who has. I also feel it was an important moment for British industry, although Arrow desgined the layout and technical features of the ride, the track and supports were manufactured in the UK.

As someone who is a big fan of Magnum XL-200, the other Arrow hyper coasters are definitely intriguing to me. For this reason, Big One is a bucket list ride for me even though it doesn’t seem like it’ll be very “good”. Unfortunately, the defunct Titan MAX from Space World in Japan looks like it was the other actual best Arrow hyper.

BigOne is my all time favourite coaster Iv ever been on and Iv been to many parks. The speed when there’s no wind, the force , the roughness , the height , the views… it’s the best truly. I ridden in back row 40 times in a Day and it was absolutely incredible. I’m one of the only few enthusiasts out there who don ant like smooth coaters. I find them boring. So BigOne to me being so rough is the best coaster. The re track work is ruining the experience for me a bit but the section near the Big blue is amazing with the whip. Just shows how we all like different kinda of rides but I find since I live next door being on there everyday and riding it you get so experience it in all the ways and learn about it. Kinda helps the growth of the ride to me

I rode it when it first opened, and thought it was pretty damn good. At that point, I'd ridden maybe 35 coasters. By 2005, I'd ridden 750+, and the Big One is way down on the list now! I know it's iconic for what it bought to the UK, but knowing how much better Magnum is, it makes it difficult to hold the big one in any kind of fondness.

Greetings from the UK! I love this ride... but I can completely understand your view. Over in the States you guys are blessed to have so many airtime machines but that's not so much of a thing over here so while the lack of airtime is a damn shame, it doesn't bother me so much. I like this ride for its consistent speed, its intensity and for just how out-of-control it feels. It's probably one of the weaker hyper coasters out there but I still think it's an excellent coaster in most ways. And for me, the roughness only added to the thrill.

You're going to have to change the title of this video now ;) IMHO, straight track is just sooo much meh that I'd rather ride a monorail haha. This is the coaster of a drop with straight track. It's so incredibly annoying as a UK resident as it's such a big swing and miss. The only reason people rave about it is purely nostalgia and mostly likely they haven't ridden any other hyper or good rollercoasters. If the people that love The Big One go on VelociCoaster, I'm sure their view would change hah.

I’ve ridden the Big one at least 20 times. Around 6-7 years ago it ran fairly smooth for an arrow hyper. But it suddenly got a little rattly and rough. The first drop is insane. But the rest of the ride doesn’t offer a lot of airtime moments (a myth that it doesn’t have any though). But it’s still a fun rattly ride that has some lateral forces. But yeah, wish it had more airtime moments. The turn into the break run is brutal though.
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 10 месяцев назад
I do wonder if its drawn out, almost Jet-coaster like design was made specifically because of the ocean winds. Like you said they can be pretty strong and introduce a lot of variability combined with the generally cold weather of the UK. I have a feeling those 2 factors combined made Arrow go "Better safe than sorry" and made the ride more ramp focused. Plus maybe the fact that the UK, especially in the 90's, wasnt really used to high intensity coasters. As for my own opinion then yeah it is really janky and not super intense. But I can imagine the jank probably adds to the intensity and desire to ride it from the general public, making up for the other parts of the layout. I know many people in the general public like to challenge themselves, get themselves scared and thrilled, and enduring the jank and roughness of something like this would for many be on par with the experience of a much more intense, but smoother coaster.
@robhaley5136
@robhaley5136 10 месяцев назад
I compartmentalise coasters - this is not in the airtime camp, so as I now don't expect that from it, I ride it for the 'heritage' and intensity. It is quite an intense monorail! Parabolic hills maybe, but you still get some good speed and it's good fun for what it is. I think the drop on the back is a bit too much, but only due to the roughness. I'd be totally fine if it was a bit smoother, but I can't really put my hands up - not because I'm 'scared of it', but more that I'm thinking about my back!!

I’ve ridden it once and I was in the very back row alone - it was fun 🙂👍 But it’s mainly like a British rite of passage to ride the thing 🤷‍♂️😅 Most UK coaster fans have their favourites and whilst The Big One is iconic for what it represents (and everyone has to do it regardless of if they’re a fan of coasters or not, just to say they did it) most of us prefer other coasters overall. Nemesis, Oblivion and Smiler for Alton Towers. Stealth, Swarm and Hyperion for Thorpe Park. Mumbo Jumbo, Sik and Velocity for Flamingo Land. Icon, The Big One and Big Dipper for BPB.

Just a thing. England is just a part of the United Kingdom. Although England's tallest rollercoaster isn't incorrect, it kind of implies that there is a taller coaster in Ireland, Wales, or Scotland. The big one used to be epic.. well, at least the first drop was. Truly terrifying until they re profiled that drop. The big one has to be ridden if you visit pleasure beach, but it's a boring ride really. Interesting thing about the Pepsi Max can, even after the sponsorship was dropped, they have updated the can design to correctly represent the current can design.. hope someone finds that interesting!

As a lover of row 14 right hand seat I'd give this a 6 - my favourite drop precisely because it's demented but it is wasted on the rest of the layout. hyper style? are you kidding me? the big one was one of the 1st "Hyper" coasters but it never got that name till the name was given to them and yes there are problems with it but 9 times out of 10 its just for brake testing at the station and the people are told they will be held on the lift hill. but thats not the only thing they are testing they are also checking out the cars wheels incase of cracks and they need to be replaced. granted it does have some issues with the layout but thats due to the limitations of PB and they could only work with the space they had. and people who judge it on that are being really unfair to it, at the end of the day its almost 30 years old, its done good to get this far but judging by how they look after it... the big one will be there for over 100 years. if you doubt that then you doubt old bridges that are over water or near water.

Being from the UK and as a fan of the Big One, I found Magnum incredibly disappointing after hearing how much better it was, I found all of the hills underwhelming, maybe mild floater at best, up until the ending hills which were really strong but in an uncomfortable and painful way. I really think I prefer the Big One overall.

It was the tallest in the world when it opened that was the main draw its still crazy to me to think blackpool had the tallest coaster once. If the late great Geoffrey Thompson didn't unfortunately die suddenly in the early 2000s im sure we would've beaten our own height reckord in blackpool long ago. Maybe one day 😆

I don’t mind this ride that much like I wouldn’t say it’s an uncomfortable ride but I really enjoyed it

So, I live 5 minutes from the park, I don’t even ride this every time I visit. The back is dreadful, the front is okay, but still not great. I guess after 25 years living in Blackpool there hasn’t been a day in my life where I haven’t seen the big one. You can literally see it from anywhere within the town. I think the people who love it love it for nostalgic reasons. Infact, I’d say you’d be hard pressed to find someone in the U.K. who hasn’t heard of the big one, or as soon as you mention Blackpool, they immediately think of big one. I guess it’s almost like the Eiffel Tower when you think of Paris, or the Pope when you think of Italy. This coaster doesn’t even rank in my top 5 in the park, never mind in the U.K. or Europe.

I rode it two weeks ago for the first time on a short trip from Germany to Drayton Manor, Alton Towers and Blackpool. It was quite cold, the turnaround was quite slow as the train shuffled through it. It was my first Hyper Coaster and I can totally see how Magnum XL-200 should be so much better. I think all traditional Hypers by Arrow which were built after Magnum have worse layouts. I instantly was reminded of that monorail comparison. Ride it for the speed, the views and the historical significance I think. If the mid-course wouldn't hit that hard the helix might do something as well. I rode it near the back two times, once in the second to last row I think. Overall it was kinda uncomfortable.

I’ve said this before about The Big One - style over substance. Driving into Blackpool from the M55 it dominates the skyline along with the Tower. When lit up at night (key word ‘when’) it looks amazing with the illuminations. But to ride it? Basically a great first drop attached to a rough monorail. I’ve not been on it since the retrack but it needs more than that to improve the experience. It hasn’t aged well in comparison. Speaking of which, it’ll be interesting to hear opinions on Nemesis & Shockwave next year - BPB take note!

I feel giddy whenever Blackpool is mentioned because anyone that played RCT1 knows that Blackpool was the best park for sandbox mode and the Big One was there perfect recreation and I played the game a lot as a kid so this ride is nostalgic and automatically makes it a 10/10 for me and i haven't even stepped foot in the UK yet lol

In my opinion it’s a pretty poor ride in terms of layout because it’s quite rough. But a non wheel seat on the front car or anywhere actually is pretty enjoyable. The views are fantastic and it’s just iconic all round. The drop slaps the rest is just speed and jank. But I’d still give it a 6/10

I kinda love how we differ in opinion, you don't like the backrow of big one and love Ride to Happiness, where I personally feel the other way around 😂 I don't really like Ride to Happiness but just love the first drop on the big one back row, it's just insane

I rode it the year it opened and was sorely disappointed by it. After the first drop it has nothing else. Now it just makes me sore. Those curved back rests dig into my ribs at every bump or sudden turn, which it does a lot. There are plenty of mobile blenders at Blackpool but at least most of the others have the excuse of being wooden, and 100 years old. Given the choice, The big One is the one I will skip. The only good thing to come from this pile of future scrap was the cool pewter pin badge from the year it opened.

I know it’s not the best ride, but I first rode it opening year, and also won £5 for my drawing of it in the local horticultural show (I’m about 10 miles down the road) and that was a lot of money to 7 year old me, so I’m very sentimental about it.

Big One has grown on me in more recent years I used to despise it but now I think its a middle of the road and for the time it opened it was the world's tallest coaster. I just think Big One has just become dated as more technology has evolved the best thing about Big One is the interaction and visually its really good to look at but to ride I think it is a weak Hyper.

You were more than fair to it. It's pretty bad imo. I think the only people who really like it are British enthusiasts who haven't ridden many decent coasters outside the UK.

Genuinely if they are to have the company come in and work on the track again I think they should be profile the first drop I think that's the portion that really could benefit the most
@DJWezzyK

This winter, another section of track is getting replaced and they eventually are doing the whole track was the plan. Also all the new pieces of track are re-profiled to fit the new U.K. Safety guidelines, which are super strict. I think when that is done, some new trains are needed and I think those B&M trains they put on Steel Dragon 2000 would be a great fit.

The ride was built with the long ramps as the park owner at the time wanted the image along the skyline, to make it reach along to the extreme end of the park it was all stretched out
@random0982
@random0982 10 месяцев назад
The first drop is only like that because there’s a sharp kink in the track. Look at an off ride pov and watch closely as it enters the element.
