The Big Picture - The Lacunae of Plastic Ban

From June 23, India’s second-populous state Maharashtra will start penalising all those found using plastic products, including single-use disposable items. The Devendra Fadnavis-led state government enforced the ban after issuing the Maharashtra Plastic and Thermocol Products notification in March this year. The government had given the manufacturers, distributors, and consumers a period of three months to dispose their existing stock and come up with alternatives to plastic usage. While environmentalists welcomed the cabinet’s decision, the plastic industry has slammed the government calling it a “retrograde step.” With its huge dependence on plastic and lack of alternatives to the banned products, many also wonder if the plan would be a success. On this edition of the ‘The Big Picture’ we analyse if banning plastic is the solution to the problem.

I am a Maharashtrian, since last three months it's been a habit to many people around me to carry there own bags whenever they walk out on shopping . The ban has really settled the consumption demands and since there are a few suppliers as so, the pricing of the retail plastic bags has also gone up so there has been reduction in it's usage. To people they don't find it difficult neither. People are themselves rejecting the plastic and it looks as if they are really appreciating, supporting the government's measures. In other terms it seem there is a sort of change in the mindset of the people and they are getting a bit concerned about environment and it's degradation causes. I too firmly believe that change is possible and it might be comming at cost of sort of inconvenience but it's working. If everything goes they way government is expecting then it might turn into a good deal. It's great step already and penalizing will certainly bring a change either a good one as of now or a bad one, time will tell the story. Frank you were phenomenal as always, today the shows went offbeat but hey man you handled it superbly and afterall everything need not to be as easy as always. Cheers...🙌

Plastic ban may reduce import bill... It may increase bamboo and jute cultivation for paper and jute bag thus doubling income of farmers.. Yes there is challenge of spreading "plastic culture" in villages with 69% population..but it is an opportunity for Indian scientist to make a GM bacteria to recover petroleum from plastic...

Sir , I think solution for plastic is, 1. Make it compulsory for every plastic type manufacturing company to install their recycle plant and they are responsible for their product for recycling. From this two thing will happen .First , price of plastic will increase that will reduce consumption. Second , employment. 2. Sen tax is good idea and use that fund for research.
@Nik-mh5jp
@Nik-mh5jp 6 лет назад
kind your information there is the strict law regarding the point you have mention. But no Manufacturer following laws even electronics companies are obliged to follow recycling of product once sold. only 11-12% are recycled by the manufacturer.

The panelists gives very valid points on the current endemics of plastics.Plastics usage are now in our blood and it is a difficult task to suddenly look for alternatives rather than plastics.So banning is a good start as it allows the industries to look for other alternatives.Govt can implement extended producer responsibility and sin taxes on plastics to further reduce the usage and Research and Development is a must to further allow the reduction in plastics. Behavioral change and civic activities can also lead the way.

Greetings, This debate is really appreciable but sir polluters pay system is indirectly effecting the final consumer from that company . As they will include that payment in the cost of their product. please somebody correct me here if my approach is wrong. Thank you
@DEVESHPANDEY23
@DEVESHPANDEY23 6 лет назад
And who do you think the polluter is, the manufacturer or the final consumer? Plastic production is relatively clean technology with near zero level of negative effects on forests, air and water, contrast that with paper, metal and glass industries. So if you can see, the manufacturer is not polluting much of anything. The "polluters pay" charges envisaged here is indeed meant to be passed down and collected from the final consumer who is the polluter. Once again, plastic manufacturing is different from other industries such as leather or metal smelting etc where the manufacturing process is polluting and the final consumers have nothing much to do with the intermediate pollution.

If we buy jute bag for 10rs..we can use it for min 100 tyms for carrying vegies...if we buy 2rs plastic bag...it cant evn last....more thn 2 times...evn i cant last for onc...so people should buy 2 cloth bags n should use it.... If i buy a plastic bag for 1rupee aftr 1use...we will throw it..but if we buy 10rs cloth bag..dfntly we will keep it with us...bcoz we cant throw 10rs bag in dustbin

It's my opinion before anything doing ban first we have to search alternatives solutions, If we will take any decision without analysis and planning we will get failure.
@aramkhi886
@aramkhi886 6 лет назад
very nice debate.. as it is necessary to find a solution for the survival of life on earth. Resolution by only one state is not going to terminate the problem, but its a good initiation by the gov. Finding an alternative will take some time, even that time also costs us with a lot of tonnes of plastics garbage on earth. Instant solution could be the one as respected panelists suggested, use of Jute and paper bags(carrying their own bags). As it is not a single nation issue, UN environment body should impose few more resolutions on each country by allocating some credits as they did in the case carbon credit. And at last, every consumer should take their own resolution of avoiding plastic. this is the only fastest remedy option we have at present .

considering the income of local vendors..it is not economically feasible to ban the plastic altogether but looking at its repercussions we can't just blindfold ourselves to the scourge..it is moral responsibility of user to segregate it and then manufacturers responsibility to recycle and reuse it..until and unless we'll continue to ignore our responsibility all our efforts are futile

Monthly once atleast discussion on progress is a very good idea. This Saudi countries dump all petroluem products like plastics. We should be more aware. This Saudi countries attracts with application of plastics in day to day life this create addiction without plastics we can't leave, this countries are safe because their work is over by introducing and addicting people. Govt should complete BAN plastics. This country was servived in every sphere more than 5000 years without plastics. All Govt acts should be eyed with a Separate Monitoring Committee without a intervention (of Govt) whether to implement or not.

Sir there can be one more solution there... soft drinks companies like coca cola are providing drinks in tin can and plastic bottles...my point is that they should avoid plastic bottle...should replace these bottle by can...this will incur more cost..to compensate this they can reduce drink quantity 😊

I don't think banning plastic is a solution firstly we should focus on; *finding economically viable alternative whose cost price should be nearly to plastic price (tax on plastic) *spreading awareness against plastic which will lead to behaviourl change and reduce its use *segregating plastic and enhancing waste management technique
