The show is the perfect example for why the 2023 WGA strike happened in the first place. Filoni is in a desperate need of a writers room to save his life

I don't know why all these Disney+ shows are named after 1 character. I feel like it pigeonholes them into focusing on a single character more than they need to.

I loved Ashoka as a character cause she was a spunky and fun lady! Finally a woman character who has personality after watching stoic men being serious. But then they just stripped that away and it hardly feels like her anymore. 😢

It's called depression, trauma, and so on. Do you expect Ahsoka to remain happy and cheerful after EVERYTHING that she went through?

I think another issue is the transition to live action in of itself. In animation, you’ve got a bit more artistic license in how characters can move or set pieces are choreographed, stuff which you couldn’t get away with in a live action production. For instance, Ahsoka in the animated shows always had quick reflexes, which made for some lightning fast lightsaber duels. So naturally when we see Ahsoka now constrained by the limitations of the human body and the physical world, it feels like a major downgrade. I really hope we can one day get over this mindset that live action is the only way to legitimise the animated stuff. Because this didn’t feel like legitimising, more like handicapping.

Let's not be so quick to forget how, in The Mandalorian season 2, Ahsoka was mysteriously foiled by a 10-foot high wall. Which, to not leave it merely implied, is about 1/10th as high as she used to jump during her teenage years when she was much weaker in the Force.

I'm still so sad we'll never get a proper animated Rebels sequel, something with multiple seasons of 15-20 episodes and the animation quality of the Bad Batch. A lot of this series had me squinting and trying to picture it as an animated show, which really shouldn't be the effect it was having on me.

Thank you, Joe! I feel like I was on crazy pills seeing the positive response fans had to this show, with people clamoring for Filoni to be given all creative control to Star Wars. And this is coming from someone who absolutely loves Ahsoka as a character. This was my most anticipated production for years. Finally, I'd have a chance to get people into this character without needing to recommend them a 150+ episode Saturday morning cartoon show! And then... this. Honestly, the comics is where I get my SW fix nowadays.

@@Joe_Brennan_ Honestly, I've not really had any disappointments in reading the main series so far. Some stuff is not as good as other stuff, but nothing on the scale of how ill-advised some of the live action outings have been. If you asked me who should be chief creative officer for SW, I'd have said Charles Soule (and only because I don't want Rian Johnson tied down to Star Wars, which he is too good for). Great video! I agree. There were some nice moments at times, but I described it as beautiful concept art loosely string together with some dialogue captioned over. They need a writers room *AND* Timothy Zahn to make Thrawn work properly. It's a shame he wasn't really brought in. Against what Filoni said... he wasn't really consulted (again). It happened just like it did with Rebels, mostly a one way communication on a few details of the characters. In his convention panels leading up to the finale, Zahn was watching and discovering the plot just like we were. And it shows. Not only is he a husk of his character, a caricature of the first impressions of Heir, but almost contradictory to the 6 established canon books. And of course, the lack of real emotion was baffling. Ezra's and Sabine's encounter fell flat, and don't get me started with the cut hug at the end. We spent 5 years waiting for him to reunite with his family and to meet 'his little brother' only for that being completely glossed over in favor of showing an Anakin force ghost for Sabine to sense...? The narrative choices made for the show are really confusing.
@Joe_Brennan_
@Joe_Brennan_ 10 месяцев назад
Confusing is the word, because it doesn’t even feel like a traditional “too much fan service” issue, because the things that are glossed over are things that fans really want to see. So it’s too much fan service, not enough fan service and the WRONG fan service.

I have no intention of watching Ahsoka. Love her in Clone Wars but outside of Andor these Disney Plus Star Wars TV shows seem so bland and uninspired. Funny you mentioned the lifelessness of colored contacts because I recently watched AMC's Interview with a Vampire and adored the way that show used colored contacts to highlight the inhumanity of their vampire protagonists. Plus the actors were really able to act through that layer so the audience never really felt a disconect from the emotions of any given scene.

I think, and I’ve come to this on rewatch after initially being swept up with the fanservice hype of it all, that essentially it’s problem is it’s about nothing. It’s got loads of ideas, fun places where it could go but it exists to place figures on a game board for a future project that promises to explore all that. It should have been a story about Ahsoka overcoming her guilt over her role in Anakin’s fall and Sabine her survivor’s guilt over Ezra’s sacrifice. There’s a clear attempt to set that up but there’s so much focus on the macguffin plot that we get reveals like Sabine’s reason for mistrusting Ahsoka at the very end of the season, when honestly it should have had a flashback to that in episode 2 whilst Sabine was recovering, so the audience got on board with Sabine’s deal early on. Likewise in episode 5, we should have had more of a confrontation between Anakin and Ahsoka and his lesson should have been about showing her that she couldn’t have prevented his fall to the dark side, absolving her of her guilt making her rebirth make sense. It’s genuinely frustrating that this is clearly what they were going for but lore, fanservice and setup took priority.

I find with all of these Disney+ Star Wars shows, it’s fascinating to imagine what they’re trying to do. The behind the scenes documentaries do a great job of making you go “oh I see what you thought you were doing here”. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this one.
@legofreak86

@@Joe_Brennan_ I think that’s why in all of the Disney Plus content explosion, shows like Andor and Loki have been so refreshing to people. They are both about something, about character and growth and they actually explore their ideas about authority, heroism and free will. We are actually let into the headspaces of the protagonists, we watch them evolve in a meaningful way. If there’s setup it’s not the point, there’s enough heart and soul to keep us invested in the journey even if they are subtly setting a board for future events we have or haven’t seen. You can actually feel there’s a person behind it rather than a board of executives or an algorithm.

Watching Ahsoka reminded me of watching the 1996 dr who movie, it throws all of the established lore at you, way too quickly with limited to no time to for new viewers to catch up on Besides if you can centre a whole episode around Ahsoka flashbacks, wouldn’t it make more sense for the flashbacks to centre around her and Sabine

Great video Joe, you really captured a lot of why this show just felt off. Having not watched rebels one of the thing that deeply confused me was why I should care about these villains, especially since there were so many of them. Why is Thrawn such a threat? Why are the night mothers so subservient to him? What the hell is Balen talking about half the time? When Ahsoka and Sabine abandoned themselves on the planet to send Ezra back, it felt like a bizarre trade off. You’ve lost two Jedi in exchange for one! Having said all that this show introduced me to David Tennant Droid, who is great and I love, both in performance and as a technical achievement.
@Joe_Brennan_
@Joe_Brennan_ 10 месяцев назад
I’m glad my assessment on what it was like for non-rebels fans to be thrown into this was fair! I just don’t see anything that sells me on the virtuous or threats of any of them. But yeah, Tennant robot is fun. It’s cool he recorded all his stuff before anyone else so they could respond to his performance on-set. It’s also just really funny to me that the one-off Clone Wars character that had him doing a Doctor Who riff was turned into a primary character of this series.

Don’t get me wrong I love Dave Filoni, but he should just focus on animated series more than the live-action ones. Filoni should of have been a consultant for Ahsoka. @@Joe_Brennan_ One critique I've heard of the series is that it's obvious Filoni is extremely attached to Ahsoka (his first Star Wars OC); to the degree that he's gone out of his way to resurrect her from death _on three separate occasions:_ once in the Mortis arc of The Clone Wars, once through a time portal in Rebels, and now in her own series after falling into the sea. Through that lens, I've realized that the writing decision for Sabine, in Thrawn's words, to "gamble the fate of her galaxy" because of her attachment to Ezra (which, as you noted, adds _some_ depth to the series, but has been referred to by some other Rebels fans as out-of-character for Sabine) could be interpreted as itself perhaps subconsciously mirroring Filoni's attachment to Ahsoka - _or even Anakin's possessiveness of Padmé._ No wonder his lesson to Ahsoka in the netherworld fell flat. No one can write a lesson _you haven't yet learned yourself._
@Gobeline78
@Gobeline78 10 месяцев назад
You've pretty much summed up why I felt so un-excited about it 😅 Some things I completely agree with, a few I didn't : - About Anakin I disagree a little. There could have been more dialogue, but what I got from it is that he was finally at peace, with all his parts - jedi, sith, anakin, vader. Reconciled with who he was and what he had done. Not sure why Ahsoka needed to learn that, tho. Baylan was painting her as potentially dark because she's a warrior, but there wasn't much to go on to understand her conflict. And yeah maybe there was a better place than this show for Anakin's growth ? But i can forgive it, his presence was meaningful in my opinion. - Sabine being a jedi. I wasn't 'not on board', but... Yeah. She was enough as Sabine. She had a full character with art, weapons, engineering and complex background and all, and ezra was doing the jedi-ing and philosophying and stuff. I wish, if they really wanted to do this storyline, that they'd actually shown us the beginning of the relationship with ahsoka and why they started training together so it could make sense. - The withholding of information almost felt like a betrayal. Waiting 4 episodes for the reason everyone's weird, to find out an entire family of characters you might have cared about are dead ? It's kinda like a parent waiting 6 months to tell you your cousin was in the hospital or something. Why didn't you tell us ?! And then I don't even remember if Ezra got to know about it, either. -The lack of connection made me so mad in the last episodes. The last thing Ahsoka said to Ezra in Rebels was that she owed him her life. Now she spends the whole series reprimanding Sabine for wanting to save him, barely ever speaks his name, and when she does meet him, it's just "hey mate, you're alive, cool". And they barely used the existing relationships. Hera and Sabine were right there with a deep bond, and they must have talked like 3 times tops. I don't think we ever saw Sabine with Jacen. I would have thought half the appeal of continuing the Rebels story is the family dynamics, and it's not there. And I also just wish it was animated. Animation's great. I'm more than a little disappointed in Filoni that he just dropped it.

I didn't hate it or anything, but it left me thoroughly underwhelmed and with nothing to really say about it. In fact, until this video turned up in my subscription feed, I'd nearly completely forgotten I'd even seen it. as a TCW fan who doesn't like rebels, i felt that the show also kinda lied about what it was just through the title alone. the title implies that this is a show about the character of ahsoka, y'know, a character study. but, it really isn't. one thing that didn't happen in this show that i felt would have done wonders for ahsoka's character was the inclusion of barriss, considering that dave filoni specifically stopped the writers from killing her off in TCW because he "had plans", and what's funny to me about that is that there was a perfect space for her already in the show. that inquisitor character who does nothing and then dies. we never learn anything about them and it feels as if everything about them is intentionally hidden from us, their only line in the entire show is spoken through a voice distorter for christ's sake. make the inquisitor be barriss, write her as a major character instead of just lightsaber fodder, and boom, there you go. something for ahsoka to do and have conflict over. as you said in the video, ahsoka is super flat in this show and doesn't really resemble her animated counterpart whatsoever, which also ties into this.

I don’t mind the Seventh Sister not be Barriss Offee, and Barriss is retconned to be Ahsoka’s peer, rather than Anakin’s, and that’s not a good thing. I remember my episode at the end of episode six when Ezra showed up, and I thought "Okay, all the characters are in place, there's a ticking clock to stop Thrawn, and the last two episodes are going to give us the catharsis we've been waiting for". Two minutes into episode seven, as I watched Hera bicker with Senators in Coruscant (or was that episode eight?), I realized they would never get there. And they didn't.

@mikehuang4834 10 месяцев назад
The biggest problem for me is the lack of consequence and tension in the story. When characters get fates they clearly do not deserve is my biggest complaint. For example, if characters make "bad" choices, they should deal with bad consequences, not be rewarded. The biggest story choice is Sabine's decision to help Baylan to get Ezra and thus damning the galaxy with Thrawn's return and at no point did she ever face any consequences. Was Sabine regretful? No. Was Ahsoka angry? No. Was Ezra angry that his sacrifice is being undone? No. In fact, she is rewarded for it. What was the consequence of Hera disobeying the government? Was she court martialed? No. Did she get demoted from being a general? No. Instead, C3po deus ex machina shows up and she gets away scot free. No consequence for any of their choices. Why did Thrawn win? Did he outsmart them? No, every single strategy he used failed to do what he intended. So why is he considered a threat to the galaxy then? No idea. We are just told he's smart, that he's winning, that he's dangerous, and yet they show us the exact opposite. Thrawn wins because the plot demands he does, not because of the choices he made. How did Ezra escape the ship at the end? No idea. They skip it because even the writer doesn't know how it could be possible. Why did Ezra wear his storm trooper helmet still when boarding the rebel plane? No idea. It looks cool. He could've gotten shot but whatever. Character makes dumb choices and not only do they not get punished but they get REWARDED. How can anyone feel tension or take anything seriously if that is the case?

The Biggest problem with the show was the confusing relationship of Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren. Considering when we watched Rebels, it’s clear Ezra had strong feelings for Sabine, yet here he claimed he saw her as “the sister he never had”, despite still displaying flirty behavior even here. Not to mention Sabine having a romantic arc with Ezra sounds interesting, yet not only make it confusing, but also can’t tell weather to accept it or deny it. At this point, just let Sabine have this arc and everything will make sense.

@@Joe_Brennan_ Yet, we saw a lot of build up with Ezra and Sabine being foreshadowed in such a relationship, even in Ahsoka. It also dosen't help, there are a lot of parralls between them and Kanan and Hera in Rebels. Maybe before it's made official, they would need to kind of do the same way they did with Kanan and Hera, which took a whoel series to do. Here, it seems the before anything, happens, we would need to see a similar situation. No doubt, a spin off could be talked about regarding this, especailly with the presence of Jacen and Ezra being his new master, meaning Sabine would likely take Hera's place as the Mom in that role when she returns from Peridea. The more I look into it, the more i'm starting to get the feeling that's really the plan. It's just at this point, maybe they are not ready yet. I've been turning into a ranting lunatic over this and needless to say, it's not good. Still when I do some research, this theory seems to hold a bigger candle, due to her actions in Ahsoka. Honestly, if this is a contiunation of Rebels, it makes a lot more sense for Ezra and Sabine to inherit Kanan and Hera's old roles, whereas Jacen could end up inheriting Ezra's role as the son in the reltionship to Ezra being the Dad and Sabine the Mom. If you look more cloesy in Ahsoka, it seems to greatly foreshadow this. It could be that an Ezra and Sabine could be talked about, this has yet to be confirmed though. From a story prespective, it makes more sense. And to be honest, keeping the reveal a bit longer would just make the relationship more impactful and emotional, due to how long it took for those to reach that point.

Very strong analysis, you really hit the nail on the head. I especially agree with your point about casting; if they can have Thrawn's voice actor in makeup to keep his voice and personality, why couldn't they do that for Hera and Ahsoka? Even Governor Azadi felt more like his animated counterpart because Clancy Brown looks like the character in addition to having voiced him. Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll really is the only great (new) thing to come out of this show. I know there's been a lot of Andor vs. Ahsoka arguments, but that's because Andor is exceptionally crafted in every way Ahsoka isn't. My dad wasn't into Ahsoka after 8 episodes, but he already really likes Andor after just 3 episodes. If we could have Ahsoka-level fan service combined with Andor-quality writing, that would be the ultimate Star Wars show.

I deliberately refrained from bringing up Andor because fans get very insecure and defensive when you mention the fact it’s possible to make a good Star Wars show, but it’s on my mind as something that succeeds in practically every department that this show fails.

Watching this, I think honestly there's an interesting topic for a video or a discussion that really should be had and that is in regards to our tendency when it comes to Star Wars to put so much stock into Dave Filoni being this godly figure who's the best fit for Star Wars because as Star Wars has gone on and we've seen more projects with him? I think (And bear in mind I say this as someone who LIKES Ahsoka.) Dave Filoni is genuinely at his best when he has people to butt heads with and writers to help turn his ideas into something great. In a way? He really is like George Lucas, he's loaded with ideas, many of them really solid and when faced with people who can help iron out his issues and get him pull back on the weaker ideas? He's really freaking good! He's also a good visual guy and someone with a good wealth of knowledge which really helps when you have those who need that assistance. However, when he's on his own or put with people who don't really question him (Again, much like Lucas.), he has a lot of issues. For one thing, his OBSESSION with connecting stories and setting up future events is starting to really get in the way of the storytelling. I've seen people who continuously point out how impressive stuff like him featuring the Purrgil in a fun bit of fluff in Rebels only to make them a crucial part of the finale is... but then they forget that not only has been something that other shows have done before but also how the episodes were written by more than just him and that in particular, a lot of the credit I feel should more go towards people like Henry Gilroy because then you look at the stuff that's solely written by Filoni like Ahsoka or even stuff he assists with like the Mando-centric episodes of Book of Boba Fett where it's really just him and Favreau and you see the cracks in the armor when he's writing characters and scenarios where he's uninhibited by future events. The man doesn't really write characters, what he writes is vessels of plot and exposition with the sprinkling of cool ideas every so often. I've noticed that when it comes to works not solely written by him and Favreau or them together? People tend to sound more like actual human beings having a conversation. They don't just talk about plot stuff or ideas that are worded in such a way that you're fascinated by the topic to the point you forget they're basically talking about nothing. Compared to some of the best written episodes of TCW and Rebels, this feels like pretty much what you'd expect when you let a fan take the wheel because as good as that sounds? Fans can also lack a ton of objectivity and be far more interested in seeing a pet project through over actually doing what should be done for the story and Filoni, especially these days, has struck me as someone who really is at his best when he has limitations, when people are able to argue with him and cite an idea as being just bad.

I spoke at length with a friend after the series ended about how frustrating the plot was, it was all soul and no heart, it all felt so emotionless. It bothered me so much how in rebels Sabine was a good fighter. She has always used guns and has mandalorian hertiage but in Ahsoka she now can't aim?? She loses those mandalorian skills because of the introduction of the jedi skills (which is a fine as an addition but they dont explain why her skills are now bad??). All they had to do was add in a line of dialogue like Sabine (to ahsoka) the force is interfering/conflicting etc. Then ahsoka could have used some jedi lore to further sabines development in the training scenes. My friend and I managed to fix parts of the shows plot with a few lines of dialogue here and there to explain certain backstories. We also had an idea of ahsoka struggling in the earlier eps with the force when meditating and she struggle with flashback (which would not only be an opportunity to explain the unsaid history between her and sabine but would also help lead her to anakin's force ghost down the line. Her struggle leads her to her final lesson with her master.) I agree with a lot of your points. I do think the show suffers from a lot of writing problems. However like you say, there are elements I also certainly enjoyed. Especially the music, it was astonishingly good and I felt it carried the series.

Oh I wish I’d mentioned the music, that’s silly of me. I really liked it, but I think I struggled a little when the grand and emotional music came in such direct contrast to the show itself. The idiom about polishing a turd comes to mind. But the polish itself is jolly good.

Actually, when you look back in Rebels, you actually realize that Dave's always been subtly hinting that Sabine would inevitably become a Jedi. In most Sabine based episodes, Sabine always acted in a manner that was more Jedi than Mandolorian. - She forgave her old friend for betraying her. - When she fought the Protectors, rather than seek revenge, she just destroyed their ships to disable them. Hera even commented that Sabine was sounding like a Jedi than a Mandolorian. - When she defeated Gar Saxon, she proclaimed that killing him might have been the Mandolorian way, but it wasn't her way. It's always been hinted that Dave was going to make Sabine grow into becoming a Jedi in the future but has left hints throughout Rebels.
@coletrain583
@coletrain583 10 месяцев назад
Funny thing I've also noticed that despite denying Ezra and Sabine won't be in relationship as well as the infamous "sister" line (which I find hard to believe, considering Ezra had a crush on her in Rebels), the show seemed to foreshadow the two eventaully getting together at some point in the future. Sabine's caresing of the mural as well as the reuinon felt too romantic to resemble anything that resembled a brother/sister relationship, which adds to the confusion of their relationship. Not to mention, Sabine's interacting with the Noti furthers seems show this, particulary with the baby she waved while talking to Ezra about how much he missed out durring his exile. Not to mention, durring the epilouge, there is a highly significant but brief, subtle musical reference to John Williams’ “Across the Stars,” the love theme for Anakin and Padme’ from Star Wars Episode II: The Attack of the Clones here, which is followed immediately by Sabine’s theme. While it implied Sabine sense the presence of Anakin’s Force ghost, if the brief musical quotation of “Across the Stars” is any indication, it seemed foreshadow (and unoffically confirm) Sabine’s romantic arc in this series with Ezra Bridger. Anakin’s possessive desire for Padme’ and his inability to accept death as part of life ultimately led to his fall to the dark side.
@the-aspiring-creator4249
@the-aspiring-creator4249 5 месяцев назад
I really don't think that was the case. It's a nice idea but really what this tells me was that in Rebels, Sabine was not like the standard Mandalorian and that she had grown from her younger days. The big deal with her not killing Gar Saxon was that during that episode from what I recall, she was being pressured to follow Mando tradition and she chose to go against that because it not only didn't suit her but it didn't feel right. I love Dave Filoni for his creativity and his ability to weave stories together in ways that totally surprise the viewer but there's a difference between what is clearly intended by the creator and what the viewer is projecting because they can see how the connection can be made. I highly doubt that Dave EVER had a clue that Sabine was gonna be a Jedi. If anything, I think that was something he thought of when he started crafting what would become Ahsoka. But even setting that aside, let's say for the sake of argument that Dave did actually plan this out. Someone can still say this was ultimately a bad idea and that it came out of nowhere.

I actually liked this show, not that it was the best thing ever but it had it's moments, a 6/10. I agree with you though, the writing is definitely it's weakest point and it proves Filoni needs his Clone Wars writers back and for the love of god get Timothy Zahn to write Thrawn instead, Lars is a great actor with wasted potential. I felt that the season as a whole was too short. It needed two more episodes because we get to Peridea for like 3 episodes and it felt so rushed with many characters and plot points unexplored. That said, it at least tried to be something new. I liked the ronin style it had going on for the most part, the fight choreography looked good, and the cinematography was hella sweet - episode 4 was my favorite.

I've only seen three or so episodes of Ahsoka before I just forgot to keep watching. I'm not sure if I'll actually ever finish it. Star Wars shows tend to lose my interest whenever they swap character-driven action for plot-driven (compare Mando s1 to s3). I'm also someone who's only seen Clone Wars and not Rebels, so I was extremely confused as to why Ahsoka was suddenly so dogmatic. When did that happen? Was that offscreen, like Rey deciding she worships Luke again between TLJ and TROS? I just wish Star Wars would stop turning off the emotions of their female characters whenever they become Jedi, goddamn.

It’s like they think being vague will keep people coming back for the resolution, but then what little resolution we get is just thrown out there. What’s the deal with Ahsoka and Sabine? I think that having an argument in a video essay like this should avoid lamenting about being gaslighted by “ people on the internet”. It doesn’t help your argument and it engages in lesser rhetorical tools that come off whiny. Brining in your Twitter conversations isn’t shaking or great for the argument. I don’t care about your public laments or the responses by others on Twitter. I’m interested in your argument and that’s it. I’ll admit to not being a rebels fan and enjoyed Ashoka but agree that I felt somewhat lost about the relationships. I kind of hoped the relationships would be fleshed out in future seasons.

One of the things that boggles my mind is that whenever people complain that Ahsoka didn't do enough to hook new viewers in, its defenders tend to go "Well what do you expect? It's mostly for people who have watched Rebels" I find this a poor excuse for several reasons 1) If this was for Rebels fans and ONLY Rebels fans then it would have been animated. 2) They want this to be the start of the build-up for a theatrically released movie (Which is a flawed idea from the offset if you asked me but that's another topic). 3) Dave Filoni said in interviews he wanted this to be a jumping-on point for new fans. Great video by the way. Summed up basically most of my issues in one go.

Star Wars makes me feel so sad these days...or, more specifically, it makes me feel nothing these days and THAT is what makes me feel so sad. Since the switch to TV shows and the increasing frequency at which they're being released, I just stopped caring. There was a time not even that long ago when a new Star Wars project would be THE most exciting thing in the world to me - for all it's flaws, I saw The Force Awakens at the cinema 5 times. THAT'S how utterly thrilled I was to see a new (and entertaining) Star Wars movie (I'm 37, so old enough that I had the OT on VHS as a kid and saw the prequels in the cinema in my teens). The sequel series then petered out with a mixed bag from The Last Jedi (the most ambitious Star Wars movie since Empire that has some pretty serious flaws, but also some of the most interesting ideas) and a complete mess from The Rise of Skywalker, but then the first season of the Mandalorian felt like a breath of fresh air. Then they started seriously ramping up the speed at which everything came out and they seemingly stopped taking much time to make sure it was actually worthwhile - The Book of Boba Fett was dull and often baffling, Obi-Wan Kenobi was pretty tedious and forgettable and The Mandalorian has been a case of diminishing returns which each new season (the third feeling especially empty). Andor is the ONE case where I was pleasantly surprised - considering that it was a spin-off series about a character that left me cold from a movie that also left me cold that *SPOILER ALERT FOR ROGUE ONE* dies at the end of the movie he's in and that I only checked out because EVERYONE was talking about how utterly incredible it was. Now Ahsoka is out and I just couldn't bring myself to care enough to watch it. Star Wars doesn't elicit any emotion from me anymore and that is really depressing. It used to be such a cornerstone of my life, but now I can't even get angry and full of hyperbole the way we all used to about the prequels...and to me, that just seems worse? I dunno...maybe I'm just chatting sh*t. I'm just an idiot with a mouth at the end of the day.

Somebody gets the point that Andor is based on that one character nobody cares about from Rogue One, and guess what it is not as compelling as Fallen Order, and I find it competent enough to consider. Rebels is a watered down story of OT’s Rebellion arc. The Mandalorian should have been strong on its own with the new cast, but later on these returning casts from PT and OT overshadows the main character himself.

I'm weird on this series honestly. Overall, I'm more cynical, but I kept oscillating between "yes I'm into this it's so cool to see this story continued" and "okay why is any of this even happening why is it so dull?" Some things I don't care as much about eg the casting stuff or the volume, but then there's Filoni constantly teasing mystery boxes and making everything vague for the sense of being mysterious. Everyone was hyped about the Anakin episode, but I just came out confused. I felt like it was supposed to be vague, but... why? This should be a big climactic moment for Ahsoka as she finally confronts Anakin and Vader's legacy, but they barely talk about anything, just talk in weird cryptic riddles and then Ahsoka is good again because... reasons. I think it was the finale that made me more jaded though. Like I held out SOME hope some things would be resolved with time (especially with Baylan cuz y'know Ray Stevenson passing on), but the finale just... didn't do that. Sabine and Ahsoka's relationship being all offscreen just feels weird too, like I know time jumps happen but as you say they barely explain much and you wonder why this dynamic even exists. Dragging things out and not explaining them eventually gets tiresome as you said. I still don't think it fell as flat as Mando Season 3 for me, because I at least liked some of the ideas here. The execution was just often underwhelming. Also honestly, I do wish this stayed animated if the rumours were true. I feel like this Mandoverse project is causing more problems than it's worth, because that's where I find to be where I struggle the most with in Star Wars nowdays. Filoni also just works way better in animation than in live-action (not that he can't do it, it's just the fact that this is basically his film school being broadcast to the world can feel pretty obvious).

I enjoyed it mostly as I was watching it. Sure, it looked sort of shitty in the way all volume-heavy Star Wars shows do where the sky is always gray and nobody ever sweats. But, I guess moreso than you, I was mostly sold on the Hera and Sabine translation initially. And the villains seemed promising. Then I saw the final episode (audibly groaned at the title) and didn’t like it all, and it sort of retroactively ruined the prior episodes. I think my opinion was partially informed by just how staggeringly bad Mando season 3 was. How that show had zero narrative thrust and just seemed completely aimless. In contrast this show seemed like it was going somewhere, and once you hit that final episode and they spend like half of it just fighting waves of zombies instead of tying up any of the several open plot threads, I was like “oh shit this show isn’t good either is it?” Even the threads they did close didn’t seem to get fulfilled in a satisfying way. Like my assumption was Sabine wanted to be a Jedi cause she thought it would help her reach out to, and find, Ezra. It seemed like a logical reason that character would suddenly want to become a Jedi, given information we know, in the off screen time. However it was actually cause she wanted to use the force to murder the Empire for an off screen Mandalore carpet bombing? That just doesn’t seem to fit her character. And when she does use the force it’s to murder a zombie in self defense? Not for like a selfless reason or to save a friend? This doesn’t make for uplifting storytelling. And the big Rebels reunion we all assumed was inevitable doesn’t happen. Even the Ezra reunion with Hera is just so flat. My excitement for this Filoni movie is next to zero. I wasn’t excited for it before, mind you. It seems weird that they’re coming back to theaters with a Star Wars movie that’s gonna require you as a viewer do a bunch of homework. Seems like a really bad idea especially when we’re seeing Marvel movies start to do not so great partially for that reason (among many other ones). Especially with how poor Favreau and Filoni have proven to be at writing things with just basic narrative structure as of late. Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch all have teams of writers. And it shows cause they’re all vastly better tv shows than any of the shows other than Andor. These two are not cut out for this shit alone. So yeah, another bad Star Wars show. Bright side of 2023 Star Wars was definitely Bad Batch season 2 and Visions, both of which I really enjoyed.

@@Joe_Brennan_ When Dave Filnoni wrote Ezra, he was great. Mind you, he used to write female characters equally well, as Ventress in Clone Wars is one of the best written Star Wars characters of all time. My problem is not with writing female characters: it is when you focus so much on “female characters” that you ignore everything else. And that’s been Star Wars’ problems ever since Rey in 2015, and Filoni is not immune from that.
