Loved BTR from grade school to high school and followed them pretty religiously when they got back together until it came out that James supports ethnic cleansing and Carlos supports Trump, so this isn't the biggest Big Time Disappointment I've had💀
@@ciana42by “supporting ethnic cleansing” they mean that James Maslow visiting Israeli towns that were attacked by the anti Jew terrorist group Hamas on October 7th. A terrorist group that in no way represents Palestinians and that has been undemocratically holding power over Palestinians without fair elections for decades. It should be noted that the aims of Hamas is liberation of Palestine only in the way of the extermination and expulsion of all Jews from the Levant. Just as Hamas doesn’t represent Palestinians the Israeli government doesn’t represent Israeli’s or their interests and instead wants to expel all Palestinians from the Levant instead, a horrific extremist act that has lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people under the guise of anti Hamas action. The situation in Palestine Israel is not a fandom war, it is an incredibly complex political, social, and historic conflict over the holy land of multiple world religions. It’s not as simple as people on social media with no historical literacy like to pretend it is and it will not be solved through violence and division.
The "man in a dress" bits on Nickelodeon mostly just made me feel bad, but the episode with James asking Logan to dress up so that he could then serenade him... that hit different back in the day😳
I am BEGGING you to look at Max Klinger from M*A*S*H 👁️👁️ his whole bit is that he’s a man who dresses in feminine things in order to protest his drafting into the war (the show takes place in a mash unit during the Korean War). He’s just such an interesting character, dressing femininely even when it’s clear he won’t get a pardon from duty. He’s obviously just written as a walking man in a dress joke, but from a modern lens he’s hardly criticized for his dresses and skirts (except by characters that are made to be prudish and seen as antagonists.) in conclusion ily Max Klinger ❤️ he’s genderfuck and I know it. It was told to me in a vision.
Yay! I was wondering when someone will bring him up. I know it is played as a joke, but it is like they are laughing with klinger and not at him. I swear the treatment of Klinger is more progressive than we thought.
I love Klinger. He's my fave. The only thing that frustrates me about him was where he got all those fabulous frocks in the middle of a warzone. I've yet to hear a believable explanation and I just want to know.
Fun fact, the 4 TMNT are a good representation of the classic 4 personalities represented by the 4 humours/4 temperments (choleric, melancholic, phlegmatic, and sanguine). The ATLA team is another example.
The ancient greek belief that people were made of 4 humors/tempraments. Yes its wild that tht was medical a thing. oh it would be more experimental psychology.
@@birchwood5889The Greeks thought personality was caused by four fluids in the body (blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm), and which one you had the most of decided how you acted. People with more blood (sanguine) were more social and people oriented, people with more yellow bile (choleric) were more aggressive and impulsive, people with more black bile (melancholic) were more moody and pessimistic, and people with more phlegm (phlegmatic) were more calm and passive. Also don't say that you're dumb, you shouldn't talk about yourself like that.
The joy I felt when I paused the video after you brought up feminizing nerds, said “I know you’ve seen the Pop Culture Detective videos on Big Bang Theory,” unpaused, and those exact videos were put on screen. Unparalleled stuff
@@sweetday0-0 the lily simpson viewership demographic is probably like 95% white tgirls with shoulder length blonde hair and glasses. you are literally just doing the “girls are such White People” dril tweet but for teenagers
Kendall was so wrong for this episode but I can somewhat overlook it because their relationship in general after this is actually pretty great, especially for being in a show like this. He makes a really good effort for her, planning picnic dates and stuff and if I recall correctly he was really mature about her having to move for her career and didn't want to hold her back. I don't know why they made him so full on with flirting with her though. I wish they had him decide to hang out with her as friends after finding out about her boyfriend and then they could keep having moments where they get caught up and both forget that they're not supposed to be romantic, but it wouldn't be one sided. Eventually Jo would realize she actually does want to be with him and it would be cute and a lot less creepy. I know the majority of this video has nothing to do with their relationship but I just have a lot of thoughts lol. I think in general Kendall is my favorite character but they did not do him well in this episode.
no, thank you for this comment, idk why i was also stuck on thinking about how the relationship does eventually end and how the show handled it , still love worldwide LMAO
13:53 this moment haunts me to this day. i remember watching this as a kid, seeing this, and thinking "oh, those things i've been thinking ("i want to be a girl") are definietly not things that are okay, i guess i'll just repress it". i have no idea how much this scene actually contributed to me not properly realizing i was trans until many years later. but, i definitely think that if instead we'd gotten a story about a kid who realizes she's trans, and what that means and how she's feeling, my life might have gone very differently. not that i'm wishing it had, i'm happy with where i'm at. i don't dwell on it much, but it is something i think about from time to time. i hope future generations of trans kids get better representation than we did. things seem to be moving in that direction, at least
Even worse if we expected either the 90s or 2000s Nick to be the one mentioned but nah, damn, since when was the classic label pass the baton? if the 2010s are considered classics, then Nick 00s is retro and Nick 90s is ancient dinosaur times.
ah damn, you're right, I forgot about the pinwheel and Snick era of Nickelodeon as well, tho I wonder how those generations felt about it through the decades? must have been a ride of emotions@@JennBit
Logan's bleep blap at 21:20 is absolutely one of funniest part of the whole show. Why did he do that? Did they tell him to improvise that whole line? What’s it suppose to mean? I need to know everything behind that small scene.
I went to a Catholic all-boys school. There are a few women teachers. Other than that, the only time women come to the school are dances, sports games, and pick-up/drop-off.
I went to an all-girls school (Gymnasium which should be around highschool I think) and while it didn't matter for teachers (except no male sports teachers) they did NOT let any boys into the building usually. The only exceptions were family at celebrations or interns from university
Tbh I've never watched Riverdale because .... did they make Jughead straight despite being aroace or was that just the fans being overly enthusiastic about his close friendship with Betty? Because I really really really really hate the aphobic behavior of just ignoring it when a character does not date and is not straight. Not every character needs to be paired up with another character.
okay as a diehard riverdale, archie comics, and jughead fan: idk how much you know abt these characters but jughead is named asexual in one run of the comics, that began in 2016. he's never called aromantic, just asexual. in the rest of the comics a gay jughead interpretation is prevalent alongside an asexual reading. riverdale does pair him up with betty pretty immediately and he's paired with a woman for almost the entire show. he's actually the only character in the main cast and almost the entire cast who is never shown to be involved in a queer relationship (it's implied but not explicitly.) queer jughead (as well as just the archie comics as queer) and riverdale have a lot of history that makes me wonder if the showrunners were even allowed to make him queer and if they even wanted to but that's a lot to unpack. I myself am on the aroace spectrum and have watched a lot of riverdale and read a lot of archie comics so I say with confidence jughead is definitely straightwashed but it's a little more complicated than just making an aroace character straight.
The bit about the writers poking fun at themselves wouldn't really be parody, it would be lampshading, where you can acknowledge some form of criticism of your work, and, ideally, offer a couter-point and defend your work in that work itself. It is often, however, used by less savvy writers to say "see, we know you think this" without actually elaborating and thinking they're better off from it, somehow.
I’d like to think there’s just one dedicated employee in Hollywood who makes every single music sting for every “I just got the idea to crossdress” moment on tv. That’s their only job.
Despite watching most of the episodes of this show, the only one I can remember is the crossover with Patchy the Pirate from Spongebob. The rest all blend together for me.
I would be curious to see you cover Mrs. Doubtfire. I saw part of the movie partway through last year, and was pleasantly surprised. While it does use the setup of a guy dressing up as a woman to get access to something they otherwise wouldn't, I can say that during the part of the film I saw, they avoided making jokes where the punchline was purely "man in dress"
It's sad how many of these Nickelodeon live action sitcoms have a bunch of this icky Queerphobia to them Legit one of the only sitcoms that wasn't completely drowned out by this stuff was Drake & Josh, granted we all know Dan Schneider is a creep and there was some crossdressing in the pilot episode, but suprisingly on rewatch I noticed there's some good deconstructing of gender roles through the characters, like the episode where Drake & his girlfriend challenge each other to a fight, and also seeing Josh be comfortable with how he's perceived and not being obsessed with being some toxic masculine archetype, hell even Drake eventually grows out of it a little towards the end of the show Rambly I know but that's one of the only nick sitcoms I can still enjoy even inspite of the fucked up shit surrounding the crew who worked on it, as there's even these little things that make me feel euphoria, even if part of it could just be headcanons (plus the show is genuinely funny so it has that going for it too)
I think that whole musical cue thing is just a way to show people getting an idea in general, I wouldn't be surprised if we found this in different episodes about different things. Doing a close up on someone's face to show they got an idea is actually super common already. You probably just don't notice it normally because you aren't looking for it.
Man I kinda love btr 😂 it’s def not perfect and I understand it not hitting the same for everyone-but their self-aware absurdist humor is kinda right up my alley. The fact the changes into any costume just happen by ducking out of frame for a second?? Do you have any idea how much I wish I could do that? (Not just cross dressing for the costumes by any means, this was a Costume Heavy show, if nothing else a lot of dressing up like bushes to be sneaky) I personally always found the humor more in the sound effects and the wild leaps in logic that all the characters do, rather than laughing really at the thing they’re doing. This was just a world where ppl follow their dreams and explore unlikely ideas and it’s so fun :) I adore how chill everyone is with ppl going FULL OUT in whatever unusual thing they’ve decided to do. The show was def always more in the realm of lighthearted escapism for me, and gave me the courage to publicly go all-out on the things that I do, like costumes :)
I've had a sexual awakening thanks to BTR too only with Kendall and it took me awhile to realize it! Back when I was a teen and I identified as a boy, I had this weird infatuation and interest with Kendall! There was a worry in the back of my head that that meant that I was gay and I was taught that it was wrong to be gay, so I suppressed it and instead decided that I simply wanted to be like him! Recently though, thanks to starting HRT, I finally broke apart my internalized homophobia and I realized that I was actually pansexual, and I realized that I was actually attracted to him!
He even owns the grandma look, his grandma look is his best female persona?! He is just going round not giving a shit what people think of him with her, a mood. Logan should have done a catchy number in his granmasona.
In TV shows involving disguises (especially comedies), when the audience is in on the disguise, it's a trend to have the disguise be much better in-universe than it is out of universe. (Think Bugs Bunny in drag, for example.) It makes it obvious even to viewers who come in late or are letting the show go in the background. And it helps with the dramatic irony if the audience can't even for a moment forget who the character "really" is. I note this a lot in these cross dressing disguise episodes. There seems to be a reluctance to put in too much effort, since part of the comedy is often in the drag aspect being obvious. That's why it was odd to me that Cody in Suite Life looked so much like a girl. Or why Shawn look so feminine in Boy Meets World (which should cover if you haven't.)
I'm not all the way through the video, but I had to pause and comment. I've been watching for a long time now, and in this video especially you're really shining and have come into your own. It's so cool to see your style of writing, comedy, and editing develop and it's become a comfort over the last year or so. Thank you for making the videos you do! Your gag about the SFX to mask a botched fistbump unexpectedly GOT me and that's what made me realize this, for what it's worth.
So i rewatched this video and started rewatching BTR and noticed that when Logan storms in after being beaten up by the girls at the reading/lecture/class/whatever that was supposed to be, that when he falls over and they all go to help him Kendall is saying “she’s fine, she’s fine” and honestly I love that? All the context he had was that one of his best friends is now wearing a full feminine getup and he immediately uses feminine pronouns. Accidentally woke for it’s time tbh.
I think it's "UH UH UH OHHHHH" (since the theme started whenever there's a problem that arises) which is certainly fitting for the title of the video lmfao
I GOT ALL THE REFERENCES! I felt like this video was created for me, thank you Lily! I had a hyperfixation on their music when I was 11-12. I had a big crush on Kendall, which ment that I just wanted to become him and then date him. I'm the transest dude. Just thought about a "gotta live it big time" tattoo in gothic lettering loool
I've been saving this notification all day. Thank you Lily for the best birthday present ever. ahem OH OH UHAH OHHHH make it count, play it straight don't look back, don't hesitate! when you go BIG TIME! what you know, what you feel never quit, make it real WHEN you ROLL BIG TIME!! ohoh HEY. HEY. listen to your HEART now HEY. HEY. don'tchu feel the RUSH!!! oh-ohh, oh OHHHHHHH Go shake it up! Whatcha gotta lose? Go and make your luck with the life you choose, If you want it all, Lay it on the line!!! It's the only life ya got, So ya gotta live it BIG TIME!!!
oh no. i just started the video. this was one of the only shows my mom didnt get mad at me for watching, do i want to ruin this for me?? (the answers yes because its Lily)
At the risk of sounding spam-my, if you're ever starved for content (I doubt it,) there's a transgender character in the drama series " Ugly Betty" and some queer themes that I'd LOVE to see your take on. Great vid, btw!
I loved this show! I even saw BTR live for my first concert and they were awesome, and apparently now they're back together? Also correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Logan came out as gay LMAO
i don't think he came out???? i just looked it up and most of the stuff that comes up is stating that he's NOT gay, and the "proof" for him being is just a tiktok of him drinking a beer with a random dude
I know this is a little nitpicky of me, but as a person of color, it’s very easy to spot the one brown person in each boyband. Like you’re telling me you can’t tell which one is ZAYN? that’s a quintessential Muslim name esp because he’s half Pakistani. Idk just a thought I had
@@dianaavila3950hey, poc who loves hip-hop and R&B here. His music is boring and i cant tell him apart from the other members either but maybe its facial blindness and bad music taste idk.
You know Kendall has some problems because he’s obsessed with the female version of himself😅was weirded out by how much he and Jo look alike even as a child
I've never watched Big Time Rush (I'm old), but this video made me think that it would be interesting for you to do a Kenan & Kel video. There were several episodes where Kel cross dressed, usually as part of a plan concocted by Kenan, but he always seemed enthusiastic about it and fully committed to the character.
I've only seen a couple episodes of this show a long time ago probably. I really hope there is nothing transphobic in Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide or any of the cast and crew unmask as transphobic when I rewatch the show or catch up on the podcast. I don't want to revisit Dan Schneider shows after reading I'm Glad my Mom Died. The only Nick shows I rewatch are Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and the first three SpongeBob seasons and first SpongeBob movie.
Welp, guess there was always a reason I never rewatched the show I swear Nickelodeon is filled with either Pro Trans subtexts (Danny Phantom, Teenage Robot, Spongebob, and even though I'm not big on Fairly Oddparents anymore it had that one episode, and suprisingly even Avatar has some light trans subtexts in there), or it's just milkingly aged "Haha man in dress" transphobia There's only a handful of nick shows I still like to watch, a lot of the rest can get banished to the depths of time like they deserve
@AutisticTransbian04 A lot of these shows were written by multiple people, with different writers' influences coming out in different places. Even if some of the people behind a show suck, why should that overshadow the work of everyone else whose artistic talent touched the project? There are so so many people who work on these things. I prefer to rewatch things when the people behind them enjoyed working on them.
@@PipeGuy64Bit I remember one of those episodes. Main things I remember from it was that Cookie usually leaves a scene by flamboyantly saying “see ya!”, Ned found him the hottest girl he saw that day and there was a joke that went “hur der, look at this woman with a deep voice” joke.
@@justanormalguy563I think you misinterpreted what I was saying I wasn't saying I was "swearing off all nick shows cause of a few poorly aged things", I was just mentioning the massive disconnect between how animated nicktoons portray trans people and how sitcoms do it, probably could've communicated that better ngl Also to be frank I just don't like a lot of older nick stuff anymore, overtime a lot of them just lost the appeal to me, again I apologize for not communicating that well enough
They were my favourite and one of the only 4 boys who i stanned super hard but james supporting a genocide, wearing a press vest in israel and all the pro israel propganda on his page, is my worst nightmare of all
oh! your tmnt chart + granny logan reminded me that in the latest tmnt cartoon, Rise, had a bit where donnie and leo dress as old ladies. it went like leo: why do you always make us dress as old ladies? donnie: one, comfort. two, to better blend in... idk, it might not be super relevant, but the old lady get ups being donnie's idea feels connected to the 'less threatening nerds' concept you mentioned :0
i really appreciated the intro!!! very clever and funny for me (someone who WAS a big time fan of the show at the time, not the group/music, and never able to forget the theme song) 😂😂
It blows my mind that RU-vid just gives away the earnings of copyright claimed vídeos. How do they not hold onto that money until the appeal window / process is over and give the money to whomever wins?
The Warhammer reference hot me hard. Not because I'm a Warhammer fan or know anything about it, but because my best friends are and now I have the urge to send them this whole video for this one reference
I saw them live this year and was surprised how much i remembered the music and the show So i am so excited you made this and *i* got the intro reference immediately
Lily, darlin I’m gonna be honest with you;I got a little high before I watched this and said out loudly during your opening bit “ is this…are these references to the show or some songs?” I don’t know anything about BTR and I’m too old to learn.I still thought it was very good video.
I would be so curious to hear what you think of the star trek ds9 episode 'profit and lace' where quark like fully transitions temporarily. i watched it recently and was just thinking woah lily simpson would have a field day with this. obviously ds9 is already very transgender thanks to dax
Imagine if all of the girls in the classroom pulled off their wigs and revealed they're actually guys. I'm not sure if that would have made it better or worse though.
I guess ill keep commenting on every video i watch, but PLEASE do My babysitter's a Vampire Episode 2: Three cheers for evil It has 1 transphobic scene but the rest of it is so gay and trans and flawless (TO ME)
I went to a BTR concert when I was 12 with my neighbors and Cody Simpson opened for them. On the way home, one of the other kids with us (a group of like 3 preteens and one teenager with her mom driving us all) threw up on everyone's shoes in the back seat of the mom's car. Not sure what that says about the band but I always remember that night when BTR comes up
With regard to the all-girls' school, private schools have a lot more freedom to make dumb rules than public schools do. "Stupid security guard is kicking out people who are allowed" is also a distinct possibility Edkit: I'd like to think that the math lecture sold so few tickets that they could not justify a space bigger than a classroom Edit 2: If the math lady is a misandrist radfem, it makes sense that less people would want to buy the lecture.
I don't know why, but this episode, in particular, made me want to write/see a movie with a "Prince and the Pauper"/"Princess and the Popstar" situation, but have a "boy" popstar in an emo or punk rock boyband and a "girl" princess look identical and sound enough alike to swap places. And it unfolds into the "boy" realizing (or revealing) that she's actually trans, and the "girl" realizing that they're actually non-binary. And have all kinds of subtle commentary about gender, roles, and presentation, and then at the end, there's a big cheesy musical number, and they all gather onstage and sing and it's this beautiful, queer, genderfucky experience 😁
@RhythmsCompany.2 I haven't yet! I'm hoping maybe to write it at some point, but autism and ADHD are constantly at war in my brain and it's hard for me to actually *finish* anything 😅 That being said, I'd love to trade ideas and/or write back and forth if anyone wants to collaborate with me. I myself am an AFAB enby.
As an ex 1D fan I honestly don’t remember their names either, only Nial and Zayne cuz I was obsessed with them. I also just want to point out that narcissism isn’t the same as egotism. Narcissism is a psychiatric term for a person with Narcissistic personality disorder and non-NPD-havers shouldn’t be referred to as such as they do not have NPD, therefore cannot be narcissistic. That term is also often misused as a weapon against people, especially people with NPD and misusing the term adds on to stigma pwNPD face, which is often so common that most “mental health advocates” and cluster Bs will shit on us for no reason. Maybe use the term “egotistical” or “self centred” next time.
Thank you for the 40k fan call out, perfectly timed with me putting the finishing touches on my grot mega-tank (putting 3d printed goblins and guns on a toy Volkswagen microbus)
So that first episode basically ended with a scene in which i can only describe as "what ben shapiro thinks the barbie movie is" Also lowkey logan looks good in drag
Camille being unimpressed by Logan in drag makes sense to me as she is constantly in character too. she also dresses up Logan as one of her potential roles/ alter ego Nina one time. the janitor and Kendalls sister also are crossdressing on episode to pretend to be the hotel managers wife and son. when Camille is changing clothes with James at the prom which is her crossdressing as well I guess, she sadly stepps down from being prom queen in her tux. And sadly Kendalls mom is always responding negatively when something that could be read gay happenes.
also you showed the scene of Kendall and Jo crossdressing and only addressed his attempt, but hers is at least in the shared clip. I have only seen half of the show so far
The highschool I went to was one of the ones that BTR played at and for the entirety of my time there I would pass a framed signed poster that was kept in like the way back corner that they shoved the art students
As a Warhammer 40k fan and a Big Time Rush fan, I want to assure you that everytime you said something to the effect of "I hope someone got and appreciated that reference" such as with the theme song thing in the intro... That was me. I got it and appreciated. And no I haven't tried Rogue Trader, waiting for a bit for the inevitable patches.
Great analysis! I loved this show when I was younger but the amount of cross dressing scenes never really hit me until you listed them all out. This show was basically my queer awakening. I was 12 when it premiered and utterly obsessed with Kendall before realizing it was actually just attracted to him. The show has countless jokes about the guys coming across gay. James makes Kendall take a relationship quiz together. Mrs. Knight walks in on Logan and James hugging and flashes them a 🤨 a couple times in one episode. They all get offended when Katie thinks they don’t want to discuss hot men with her. I’m surely forgetting some others. Then there’s an entire episode that’s an allegory for coming out of the closet. Big Time Secret. Kendall doesn’t want the guys to know he’s been figure skating since it’s not as masculine as hockey or whatever. They believe he’s hooking up with Camille since she’s his skating partner. He keeps this secret until the end of the episode where he reveals his shiny purple figure skating costume to his friends and they initially flip out before accepting him for who he is. This show essentially introduced queer-baiting to me. I’ll be upset if they make a reunion episode because it’ll ruin my headcanon that they’ll all in a gay poly relationship with each other now.
Your channel is such an amazing ongoing study of trans presence in media. You should just take your video scripts and combine them into a book or whatever academics do when they publish shit
8:55 as someone currently mid-hyperfixation on the tmnt this made me waaayyyy too happy lol. Also, i like that they're all the 2003 version exept donnie.
