I really enjoy the quality of this kit! Although this kit has the largest number of parts I have ever built. I decided to fill all the spaces to facilitate the future planking process...
Building a ship model of the frigate USS CONFEDERACY (1778) in scale 1:64. Kit manufactured by the American company ModelshipWays. Here I share my personal impressions of the kit and results.

Olga, I am inspired and somewhat intimidated by the excellence of your work. I am currently building an Amati kit of Vanguard. It is difficult and takes real patience to work at that level of detail and master the tools needed for it. Perhaps the most difficult part is understanding all the names of the various parts of the ship and its rigging. It's a whole new language for me and the instructions expect you to understand all of it. I was wondering what kind of preparation you had for your ship building work. It is a pleasure to watch your work.

Da kann ich nur beipflichten. Baue selber die Bounty von del Prado. Bin mit der Takelage dran und muss noch die Segel nähen und diverse Restarbeiten an Rumpf und Deck ausführen. Der Bauplan von del Prado ist ein Witz. Oft auch noch falsch dargestellt. Maßstab 1 zu 47

I think I understand why you are doing this with a POB (Plank On Bulkhead) ship. But if you do POF (Plank On Frame) construction, it shouldn't be necessary. I have one ship that I completed some years ago, POB construction, and it is a single layer of planks. I have never had any trouble with warpage of anything of that sort. I live in Iowa, USA, where we go from 0% humidity to 100%, and have temperature extremes from 115 F to -25 F. Now my models don't get exposed to temps swings, but they do have humidity variations. I have used many types of glue, including hot hide glue (not on models, but on other things), and I have really noticed no problems. Now this may be because I am using well-seasoned wood, I am not sure. My primary glue on my wooden ship models though, is Titebond 2 and 3. I have a model of USS Constitution under way that I partially planked about 3 years ago, on just one side, and I see absolutely no warpage or change in the geometry. I tend to fair my planks as I go (3 or 4 at a time), and they are smooth as the day I faired them. The reason I do this is so I don't smooth them down to far.

ВЬІ путаете набор для начинающих - там действительно шпон! А ето адмиралтейка с одним слоем обшивки рейкой! Если вЬІ хоть раз имели дело с рейкой то знали бЬІ какой геморой каждую доску готовить для установки на переборки - по етому профессиональнЬІе моделистЬІ, в том числе и те кто строят с нуля, заполняют шпации липой или хотя бЬІ бальзой...

Ничего не понятно, зачем выпиливать шпангоуты и т.д если потом вместо обшивки вставляется куски дернвяхи, не легче сразу из полена выточить эту модель???

Потому что в етом наборе всего один слой обшивки из-за открЬІтой части борта. И если вЬІ не заполните шпации - не только сложно будет правильно вЬІполнить обшивку, она так же начнет играть и деформироваться со временем от сменЬІ влажности воздуха и появятся впадинЬІ между болванками. Ето становится обязательнЬІм если корпус вашей модели длиннее 30 см. А с одним слоем обшивки стоит ето делать и на моделях для начинающих! ВЬІ столько времени и труда вкладЬІваете в модель, мто б потом смотреть на кривой корпус? Как по мне добавить себе работЬІ ето не так уж долго сделать но потом наслаждаться результатом. Чем бЬІстро абЬІ как слепить в кучу детали, щедро залив все циакрином!

А как потом гвозди вбивать или гнуть рейки потом паяльником прямо на корпусе? Етот метод я использовала на маленьком корпусе ПинтЬІ и то там бЬІла двайная обшивка - первЬІй слой можно бЬІло укладивать как угодно, но он тоже не держит гвозди! Так что если второй слой обшивки не из шпона, будет не так просто сделать правильную чистовую обшивку!

Such blocks can be found in craft stores. I took a bag with different thicknesses, because the distances between the bulkheads are also different...

Bondo? Yikes. You love sanding don't you. Why not just use wood filler?

This is definitely not my favorite part of the job))) But it is better to use Bondo or any other putty for cars, because the wood filler then peels off together with the layer of planks.

Confederacy was a vessel of the Colonial Navy, before there was a United States Navy, so the USS is not appropriate. USS wasn't officially used until 1907, before that a litany of prefixes based on the ships class was used; US Frigate, US Sloop of War, US 2nd Class Frigate, US Armored Cruiser, etc. When Theodore Roosevelt was Secretary of the Navy, it bothered him having all these pre-ambles to every ship's name. When he became president, he issued Executive Order 549 stating that all Navy ships were to be referred to as "The name of such vessel, preceded by the words, United States Ship, or the letters U.S.S., and by no other words or letters" Does the kit refer to Confederacy as USS?

Yes, you are right! But the manufacturer decided to use both options. On the box they write: USS CONFEDERACY... And on the drawings: US Continental Frigate CONFEDERACY... Although there is an explanation for this - the research and drawings were made by a professional shipmodeler, and the kit manufacturer made the promotion for the kit...

I followed the Chuck Passaro's build of what became the kit on the Model Ship World forums, He did that with Syren too. I think I've seen him mention some "differences of opinion" he's had with the manufacturer, especially on matters such as this. Some ships technically can carry the prefix; Constitution, Constellation, Hartford, and others that were still on the Navy lists after 1907; I think Constitution, Constellation, and Olympia are the only pre-1907 vessels that still exist, and of them, Constitution is the only one on the active list. Very good! I understand why. But I’ve never fully filled a hull prior to planking. I do see several advantages to planking a basically solid hull. Your videos are great. But can you explain why you make this step? As you know, I have this kit in my shop. It is not next, but I am considering filling hulls with my next build Niagara from Model Shipways. Thank you very much! This not only facilitates the planking process, but also prevents deformation of the planks from changes in humidity, especially on such a large hull. This is a very boring job, but if you do not do it you will always regret just looking at the model. Now I live in a very humid climate and can see on my two models, that even for small hulls in this area I need to completely fill the space!

There are so many benefits! More importantly, the hull will not twist over time. Especially such a long model. Second, it will be much easier (10 times) for you to arrange planking. Especially when it is only 1 layer of planks. In addition, you have a larger area for gluing the strips, you can hammer nails with clamps anywhere or bend the planks directly on the hull with a soldering iron...

I'm glad I read the description because I was confused at how much extra parts you were adding to a kit. I still don't really understand why it's necessary since kits usually just plank across the ribs, but you clearly know a lot more than I do about ship building so I trust the finish result will be fantastic, and that's what's important.

In this kit, the planks are in one layer (because part of the frame will be open on the right side) so to facilitate the process of laying them, it is better to make a perfectly flat surface at first! Also, over time, such a planking without filling the spaces over time is deformed under the influence of humidity and bends (dents appear) between the bulkheads...

its likely I would have gone with styrofoam instead of basswood. both are light and easy to work into shape but one is cheaper. maybe its the hammered in notion from back when I was studying carpentry "if it doesnt show it doesnt matter." but as a miniature modeler I gotta respect the lengths of effort taken with the ship.

I use foam for small models that are planked with veneer. But for such a large hull, it is better to use linden or basswood, because I will bend the boards with a soldering iron directly on the hull. That's something you can't do on a hull with foam.

At the moment, I'm cutting the planks for this ship, as I'm going to replace those that come from the basswood in the KIT with the precious wood. And when I make the planking, I will publish the next video - it's a big model and takes a lot of time...

Not for this model. The styrofoam only helps to hold the frames in place, but you can't use it to bend the planks with a soldering iron and hammer the nails of the clamps... I use it only on small models. Check it out in the Pinta's playlist!

Oh oh now I need a scroll saw! Did Model Shipways instruct filling the hull with solid wood? I did this on their Niagara, did not like the idea of complex single planking. Some day I need to finish that ship, it is actually a very hard kit, lots of real fabrication.

This is a similar technique as in most of their kits. And the same single planking. But I will use hard wood and bending the planks with a soldering iron directly on the hull, so I definitely need to fill the spaces...

You cannot drive nails into the foam or bend the planks with a soldering iron directly on the hull. Foam is suitable for small hulls and with planking from veneer. For example, I used it on my Pinta only to form a hull shape...

These 300 grams of Baswood are nothing compared to the heavy plywood from which the model's skeleton is made. But the planking will be 10 easier to do and the planks will not deform over time from changes in humidity!

I can't count the time clearly for this ship because it's too big and I run out of wood all the time - so I just spend more time waiting for materials than building her. I think if I built her every day it would take at least four months! And in fact - I opened the box with the kit a year ago)))

@@OlhaBatchvarov You would have been better served building the hull using real world framing than this cut block method you used. Really if you stopped with the frame as it was before putting all the blocks in between the ribs you could still have planked the vessel and many that I have done I double plank them for added strength. It will be perfectly strong without the need to place all the complex wood plugs like you did. Likewise if you are concerned about strength try using a construction type polyurethane foam board in place of the wood, shape and sand it and once in place use an epoxy resin to coat it and give it the desired strength for planking (after a final sanding of course). If you are sold on the wood method consider using balsa wood instead of what I think you used which looked like bass wood. Its softer, easier to cut, sand and shape and is still strong enough for the application you was using it for. One more note about using the foam board is you could cut and glue them in place and then use a hot wire to cut using the wood ribs as guides to get nice compound edges and then sand to a finish.

Great build. I have a question. Why did you make a "solid " hull as opposed to frame and plank? I understand it would be more solid ( and heavy), but did the blocks really make it easier to cover?

Thank you very much! There are many advantages to this! The most important thing is that it will make the planking process 10 times easier. You can bend the planks with a soldering iron right on the hull and also nail the clamps where you need! Balsa can be used for small hulls that are planked with veneer. But for skeletons with large gaps between bulkheads, it is better to choose a basswood. Basswood can holds nails well unlike balsa. Also with basswood I can bend the planks right on the hull!

Very nice work. That is going to give you a near perfect substrate for applying the planking. 👍👍 I used to work on card stock ship models. One build was a scratchbuilt design I was doing for an online contest run by Dimitri at Digital Navy. To fill the spaces in the ships framing I used pink insulation foam.

This is not how you plank a hull! It’s much easier to plank along the ribs and double with veneer.

Olga, I am in awe of your skill set and attention to every little detail on each of your builds. Besides giving you freedom in anchoring hull planking, would you please share any other thoughts on why you prefer to fill the cavities between hull bulkheads? And, may I add, I hope 2022 is a great year for you and your family.

Thank you very much! But this is really only for the perfect planking! This not only facilitates the planking process, but also prevents deformation of the planks from changes in humidity, especially on such a large hull. This is a very boring job, but if you do not do it you will always regret just looking at the model. Now I live in a very humid climate and see my two models, that even for small hulls in this area I need to completely fill the space!

Because here is one layer of planks on the model! And if you want to make them correct and most importantly fair surface on such a large hull with large distances between the bulkheads - you need to completely fill the spaces. Otherwise, the planking over time from the change in humidity in the air will begin to deform and there will be dents between the bulkheads!

if you want the hull of a shipmodel to be sturdy this is the way to do it. In the beginning days of my wood modeling a pensioned professional modelmaker that worked at the Rotterdam Maritime Museum showed me the logicalness of doing this. I may not always do the whole hull but i wil allways strengten the bow and sternsection and pre sand the parts down before glueing them in place. Well done!!

why not making it hollow?... just glue the wood planks to the hull parts? you may need some water vapour and heat to do so, but it will be lighter... we've been doing that in rc boats for years...

How much time does it take you to prepare each board? Because I can now bend them right on the hull - it speeds up the process 10 times and improves quality! As planks on these models, in due course from humidity, have property to be deformed (expand/narrow) and locations of bulcheads become visible if you not fill the spaces!..

@@OlhaBatchvarov What I'm mentioning is what we used traditionally to make rc sailboats, we had to bend and glue each board, and we couldn't leave any empty space, as it was meant to float. But... we usually used balsa, which is light and easy to bend. moreover, all of the inside spars were removed in the end, and we got an empty shell. We didn't bent each plank isolated to the exact place, we usually bent the whole board, or smaller parts, to get a curved board near the end result, but not in the definitive form... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FWNw2YNYkPE.html a bit like in this video, we just pre-bent them
