The biggest tool I have ever unboxed! HUGE thanks to Tormach for supporting the project: hubs.ly/Q01pr2FV0 If you too would like to support the project - buy one of our coins HERE: www.NotaWheelc... I have wanted a CNC Milling machine for YEARS now. Having the ability to quickly take a digital design and turn it into a real working prototype in just a few hours is amazing. It will really take our manufacturing game to the next level. No more outsourcing small parts and waiting weeks for them to arrive. The Tormach 1100MX is a new and very welcome member of our Not-a-Wheelchair family.

Hey Zach, I'm an aerospace machinist and have been in the industry over a decade at this point. You had some good ideas up to getting the part clamped down well enough to hold it in place, but something to keep in mind. The endmills are going to also be applying lifting pressure along the helix of the cutter, and the Mitee Bites are applying lateral pressure to hold it. One thing I would look into for your shop is making an aluminum subplate for the table and drill/tapping a grid of pin and tapped holes for work holding and locating. This will let you bolt down subplate fixtures in repeatable locations, but also gives you a soft aluminum plate to drill into. Generally, I would suggest having your fixturing on subplates so that you can create custom cut outs necessary for your operations. In particular with this piece, if the holes that you drilled to not have to be blind holes, you can drill all the way through the part and then use those holes to clamp the part into. If you only pocket out the part on the first operation, that would also leave you with excess on the outer profile so that you can drill into that excess for workholding on your second operation.

The failing fixings reminded me of my time in the 90s as a tool setter and programmer on Mazak H400N 4-axis horizontal milling machines with a 60 tool magazine. The clank of the alloy jumping the fixture brought back nightmares of when operators would leave things loose to destroy tooling, all because they wanted a longer rest break. I always dreamed of being able to have one of those H400Ns in my home garage, but the support systems needed were beyond the capacity of a home setup. I love this machine - nearly all the functionality, but suitable for home and small industry use. It’s awesome. So is Zac - what a humble guy, and willing to share his time and intelligence with all of us. This channel is one of my favourites.

For the machining of the gearbox, i would suggest screwing the gearbox on a mounting plate (from the bottom when machining the 2nd side). That way, you can clamp the mounting plate on the table (instead of the part itself) and not be worried it will come loose with all the pulling force of the milling process!
@Vincent_Gagne
@Vincent_Gagne Год назад
If you wanna go a step further into production mode, you can use locating pins in the mounting plate on a jig to always put it back in the exact same spot, clamping and pressing cycle start on the milling. It would help with production speed

I think a cnc milling machine is any makers dream. I work for an aerospace company and have seen many different types but they all cost a few million $. Glad to see you are able to afford one. Good luck with Not a Wheelchair. It’s a great idea. Have you thought of getting a kickstarter for it? From the comments it looks like you’ve already have a line forming for this product.

A quick tip get some 55 gallon barrels to recycle the shavings. And get into the habit of cleaning out the CNC machine every time you change material. It will make it easier to recycle the different media (metals/plastics) and also keep the coolant and machine more reliable.

For someone who describes the self as “not a professional in any of this” you seem to be absolutely nailing it anyway! More power to you buddy! I’m not an electronics / motors expert by a long shot but could the direct drive motors from washing machines be adapted or used somehow for drive of the vehicles? Just seems like a high torque low rev motor would be better for this application but as I say I know very little on this subject. Just throwing ideas around. And big respect to toe Mach for their support! That’s rad!

I have been recently wheelchair bound due to Heart Failure, part of the reason I stopped making RU-vid review videos. Having Not a wheelchair would help immensely to get me out of the house and about. Sadly can't afford one, but I am super appreciative of all that you guys do and bringing light to those in need.

As a full-time wheelchair user myself I appreciate what you are trying to do here. I currently have a decent power chair that is somewhat usable Off-road but only on hard dry ground that is relatively flat. It is a $35,000 chair without insurance that is well beyond anything I could ever afford. If you could make a kit that could adapt a one wheel into a remote controlled pusher for manual wheelchairs that would be a great improvement on what is currently available. I use a smartdrive currently and it works well enough but it is quite expensive at $7,500 and it doesn't have that much power or range. I have thought about buying a one wheel & modifying it to be remote controlled but I don't have to electronic know how to pull it off. But they are vastly cheaper, more powerful and has far greater range than current manual wheelchair drive devices.

As a former machinist, cnc mill operator I believe if you go nice and slow on the last few passes the end result won’t have so many markings on it. The computer controlled ones are nice. I learned on manual ones.

Even though I do not need the equipment myself I truly do love what you guys are trying to accomplish. If my financial situation was better I would 100% be buying one of your coins but alas I cannot. The miniscule bit of ad revenue you get from me watching your videos is the only way I can help and I do so gladly.

Hey Jerry, I'm a manufacturing engineer (mostly focusing on the welding and metallurgy side of thing and production flow, but with a fair amount of machining experience). Something that may work for you with the fixturing is making something called "soft jaws." Pretty much its just a negative of the outside face of the part that you are making that you can put your part into and clamp it in something like a vise. I know that wasn't a very good description of what soft jaws are, but a simple google search will help get you an idea. Nothing is more scary than throwing a part out of your clamp, speaking from experience!

I was wondering what kind of project could top the electric hummer conversion project but here we are !! this project is really cool , the fact that it will help so many people, that we can see part of the development through videos and that important industrial partner jump in and provide equipment, is awesome ! I know another one of my favorite channel, The hacksmith, got a partnership with Digikey since they do a lot of electronic, and they provide them with a fully equipped electronic lab with multimeter, soldering station, oscilloscope, all kind of parts, etc. maybe you can reach out to them ;)

Just two things about the gearbox design: Add a shaft seal outside of the bearing so you can flood the gearbox with oil. 2: make the two halves of the housing index in each other with a ridge on one side

While in a Vo Tech school back in the 1960's the machine shops had state of the art CNC'S that ran on punched tape. Amusing how far they came.Did electrical work in machine shops that ran over a dozen CNC machines 24/6 and one person often ran three of them at a time. Big money makers.
