Cruising is one of the most affordable vacation options available. When booking a cruise, your cruise fare covers dining, entertainment, accommodations, onboard activities, and transportation between ports of call.
While it’s true that your fare is quite inclusive, cruise lines have plenty of ways to get you to spend even more money once onboard. Take one look at your daily itinerary and you can find countless ways to spend money each day of your cruise.
In fact, it’s easy to feel as though you’re being nickel-and-dimed by the cruise lines, even after you’ve made your final cruise payment. Things like Wi-Fi, spa treatments, art auctions, and even bottled water can all rack up a huge bill. This is especially true if you’re sailing with a family, as the expenses can quickly multiply.
As a budget-conscious traveler, there are some obvious tactics cruise lines use to encourage onboard spending. Here are the biggest cruise rip-offs that you should avoid to ensure you aren’t wasting your money.

I'll never do the spa again. Paid about 150$ for a 'massage' and all I got was a 10 minute massage and 20 minutes of hot stones. Total waste of money.

Some of these rip offs can be avoided by your choice of cruise line. The all-inclusive choices may appear more expensive, but aren't in the long run and Viking, for instance, provides included bottled water, free wi-fi, at least one free shore excursion in each port, has no art auctions, no annoying professional photographers, allows you to bring your own alcohol on board, and probably a few other things as well.

There is a great trick to avoid the ATM fees. As a very seasoned cruiser, you go to the casino, tap your card/band, add money into the machine "to play" as a room charge, and then print the voucher and take it to the cage. Boom! You're welcome in advance...I do this ALL the time on multiple cruise lines and it works.

But you have to have an established standing with the cruise line’s casino. A bonus though, you can earn complimentary cruises if you gamble.

But because you are happy with the included dining options does not mean that specialty dining is a 'rip off.' It is not your choice to choose specialty dining and I support that, but that doesn't cause it to be a rip off for everyone.

@@julieb7882 Where are these still sold, please? I used them ~ 18 years ago internationally + almost 13 years ago on a first + only short flight 2 week trip to Oregon before all the rare, insidious, + fatal degenerative disks, spinal cord compression, widespread and intensely agonizing to unbearable chronic pain. I've been searching for medical treatment required to not die unnecessarily + information about what is versus isn't accessible to the mobility and pain impaired. I see many pools and jacuzzis without lifts to no port access with the remaining requirement to pay port taxes + fees. Aside from the non accessibility being a "cruise ship rip off,'" I wonder if a cruise would provide the amenities which could otherwise be available to me. I also think about a cruise possibly being a kinder + gentler way to travel a Transpacific +/or Transatlantic itinerary instead of flying - including a much too long economy seats only flight even if booking needed lie flat business class airline transport due to how sobbingly (and unnecessarily quality of life obliterating absence of already established needed emergency medical surgery + follow up diagnostic testing including for 5 forms for of cancer, routine labs and physical exams to prevent additionally caused complex and interactive multiple fatal conditions when they've been intentionally left untreated for almost 6 years to decades since first symptoms and underlying causes which doctors falsely claimed "never happened, never existed, no medical history, made up for attention seeking, and worse" even after "surviving" some of the most quality of life impeding excruciating pain again without treatment even for failed and massively ruptured and failed medical devices implanted when I wasn't a candidate to use the devices and was never asked for permission for placement where that'd leave me in so much worse untreated pain with no surgical repair or removal. I'm keen to obtain humane and professional medical treatment abroad as my only chance for potential survival. My concerns do include "cruise rip offs," with valued content but also mobility impaired access and access to life sustaining + quality of life vs existing in agonizing to unbearable untreated pain for this "rare, insidious, and degenerative" condition which was already determined to sever and/or compress my spinal cord so badly that it will either unnecessarily end my life or unnecessarily leave me paralyzed especially at the highest survivable levels in my neck to the bottom of my back. No prescribed and approved palliative curative care has been provided for decades and no repeatedly prescribed palliative - hospice care has ever been provided despite repeatedly confirmed necessity. Sorry for the length; I'm seeking helpful feedback from others who may have encountered some aspect of all of this to make offer helpful information. Best regards,

Excursions are rip-offs to me as well as the impression that you have to take them to enjoy your trip. First time to a port just walking off the ship and exploring is a great excursion. Enjoying the ship while others get off also makes the ship a more enjoyable excursion on its own.

Our recent Disney Fantasy cruise returning to the ship early and having no line on the water ride for a few hours was an unforgettable time with the kids. I disagree with referring to these as “ripoffs”. IMO, the fact that an item or service might cost more than you’d like to pay doesn’t constitute a ripoff. It simply constitutes a choice. 🤷‍♂️

@@michaelvitale4029 Yes, it is a choice, technically. However, it is a ripoff when the price is extremely higher than what other people charge for the same service. $80 for internet (in my area) vs. $365 means ripoff. I use a computer not a cell phone for my needs, I upgrade to a package that covers WIFI, drinks, and tips sometimes other goodies like gyms and desert packages. This works well for me, I'm on vacation, I budget at home. If you don't want your children to spend on the ship activities, go on ships that don't offer all the frills, kids will find other included activities, also these cruises are usually less money. Booking extremely early, a year or two, allows cruisers to save hundreds of dollars and it gives time for families to save for wanted extras. Always buy cruise insurance, shop around for what your family needs. Personally, My group has used the insurance twice in two years, once to avoid a hurricane. That was a good list you gave.

I’ve always thought it has been cost of pictures taken by cruise members while on ship. Old cameras used a lot of film that had to be developed and then thrown away each week as passengers disposed of them. Now with digital cameras this is all saved. But pictures have even went higher. We refuse to have pictures taken that we don’t care for others to judge.😬👎

Regarding solo travelling - it really depends which cruiseline you book, whether there is a rip-off or not. You just have to compare. NCL for example has a lot of options for solo travellers, like solo studios on larger ships (especially designed only for solo travellers) or/and you can book solo inside/solo oceanview/solo balcony - that are cabins normally designed for two guests (on larger and smaller ships). For years now NCL has been pioneer with solo travellers. Meanwhile other cruiselines see potential with solo travellers and you can find also options there.

I had a Solo Cruise in a Double Room with 0% surcharge from Hawai'i to Tahiti in December 2023. The Duty Free shops are often more expensive than what you would pay if you had to pay the taxes. And now they won't let you bring on your own water. Go to the Casino and have them charge your room for several hundred dollars for chips, then go back a few hours later and cash them in.

Royal Caribbean now allows you to bring 6 bottles of water on board, but I always bring a water bottle I can fill for port days and excursions. Also on Royal, certain paid attractions, like the IFly on the Odyssey, are free if you go the first day, when most people are at the pool or exploring the ship. I think the specialty restaurants are a ripoff. On Royal, you can get the same specialty steaks and lobster in the MDR for half of what it costs in the Chops Steakhouse.

If you get the FREE at SEA with NCL you have to pay your gratuities up front on the value of the FREE AT SEA offer. From a number of comments I’ve heard over the years that you would have to consume 5 drunks on average per day to recuperate the up payment. So a couple of glasses of wine and a pre and/or drink dinner you pretty much break even. RCCL and NCL are famous for nickel and diming the passenger. Don't stay connected to Internet while on vacation. Don't do most of those things that the newer ships have. Do prefer older ships. Don't like Roller Coasters to begin with. Nor do I like Ferris Wheels. If you come back late on a non sponsored tour the ship will not wait for you. If you like the artwork buy it. If not, let it pass. Usually purchase bottles of water before I even check in. Bring enough cash. Not a big drinker. Don't like cocktails. Some years ago, when my wife was alive, we went on a shore excursion in Canada. They were working on roads so we came back pretty late. They held the ship for us. Much to our surprise as we were in the dining room we found out that a shore excursion still wasn't back yet. Advantage of taking shore excursions with sponsored companies.

My aunt and I took a Carnival Cruise Excursion the first full day to the beautiful beach at Trunks Bay at St. John, USVI. The cruise ship tour bus operator took some people to the cruise ship while at least 3 persons on the cruise line shore excursion - including my aunt, a wife of a concerned husband on board the ship, and I were unceremoniously dumped on the opposite side of a lake far away from the Carnival Cruise Ship. We were all running long distance as fast as we could to get on board before we had to crawl through a small port where food was being unloaded. The woman with the concerned husband on board was acknowledged as missing from a Carnival Cruise Shore Excursion. Even though my aunt and I paid for the same Carnival Cruise Shore Excursion, my aunt and I were told we would have been left behind and responsible for any and all payments to potentially reboard the cruise we would have otherwise been deprived of in addition to being admittedly abandoned by Carnival Cruise Line during an official Carnival Cruise Line Shore Excursion. Neither my aunt or I could possibly run that long distance sprint...from the "great beyond" to an electric mobility device. Does anyone have feedback about their experiences cruising as a severely mobility, nerve damage, and chronically severely pain + severe muscle spasms impaired cruise line guest + independent shore excursion guest since any wheelchair cruise line excursions are either non accessible although claimed to be wheelchair accessible when the port of call isn't even electric wheelchair or electric scooter accessible. The charging of port fees when ports of call +/or cruise line excursions aren't accessible seems like...a rip off. Plus its definitely non compliant with many countries anti discrimination laws? Can I get a jacuzzi lift + port access and overall access for sailing single as so often required for mobility accessible rooms if they're even offered in a sufficient or any number of rooms in each category just like for everyone else? Thank you in advance for helpful information. Best regards, Turtle Mascot

Same here. I've learned a long time ago that when hotels (All inclusive) or ships list prices based on double occupancy, it means that (aside from the food and amenities cost), the are breaking down the actual charge for the room by 2 to appear more appealing. As a single traveler, I've always understood that I still have to pay for the room and I am not getting ripped off. Now if I had to pay for both meals, that would be a different story, but I usually DO end up paying a little less than the full double occupancy rate. (Some one previously mentioned that never saw that at hotel, but many times, they just list the full price. You do not get a 50% off just because you travel by yourself). For me, many extras are about convenience and less stress. Just because it may cost extra, does not necessarily make it a ripoff, as long as you don't have to stress about the price and it puts a smile on your face. Edit: Doing my first cruise soon, and don't feel I was ripped off. But I also would not allow a 2nd person to stay with me if any family wanted to go, LOL, 😂

Sad to hear anyone doesn't understand that you have to pay for a product. Gee, just like back home! Is that a surprise??!! No one is forcing anyone to buy anything!

The problem is not having to pay. The problem is that the ships get away with extortion prices. If a bag of chips for 1 person cost 2 dollars on land, why should the ships be allowed to charge 6 dollars for that same bag? I would accept an extra dollar upcharge but more than double is way too much!

What would you need cash for? About to go on our first cruise.. wondering how much I should bring

Bring tip money for baggage handlers, ports, and excursions. Taxi's as there are some drivers that rip you off on your credit card. Be careful & decide on taxi fare before you take one. Most beaches in ports will charge you entrance fee or chair rentals, etc. Anything you buy in ports, highly advise paying cash for souvenirs, food, drinks. You will have so much fun. Happy Cruising.

@cynthiamartino1512 Thank you! I really hope we do! It's not only our first cruise, but our first vacation with just me, my husband, and our daughter (5 yrs.), as we usually always go with other family. I appreciate the advice! I'll definitely remember to grab some out of an ATM in Miami before we board!

@amechellec90 hi again. Also, remember that you don't want to be a Pier runner. The cruise lines will leave you behind. For your first cruise, it's better to go with cruise line excursions as they will wait for you if the tour gets delayed. Kids' quarters are amazing on the ships too!

@cynthiamartino1512 We aren't doing any excursions. Thank you, though! I've seen those videos, that's got to be so embarrassing! I'm taking a watch to make sure I have it on boat time. Luckily, everywhere we are stopping has beach to hang out at, and that's all we want to do. 😊

Rip off? Just because you think the price is too high doesn’t mean it’s a rip off. If that’s the case then cruising is a rip off. If the service you purchased works then it’s not a ripoff.

The biggest rip off is the daily gratuities they guilt you into paying them saying that’s how the crew gets paid let’s be honest the pay slave wages I tip and I take care of the servers bartenders etc but I zero out the daily gratuities every time
@briansanderson65
@briansanderson65 2 месяца назад
You believe the lines pay 'slave wages,' which I assume you find abhorrent. Instead of trying to rectify that and ensure the crew is given a living wage, you decide not to tip the daily gratuities that go to the housekeeping staff and other behind-the-scene workers. Hmm.
@robertk4552
@robertk4552 2 месяца назад
Same here. We always remove the auto gratuities which only exists to track the pay for the staff that works for gratuities so the cruise line can pay them less out of their own pockets. As a cruiser my fare covers some expectation of service, like for the behind the scenes workers, and my tips should not be to pay the staff (since I already did that with my fare) but to show appreciate and tip those who have helped me directly. What I tip should not be used for the cruise line to reduce what they pay their employee. It is a broken and greedy system that auto gratuities only help to perpetuate.

@@briansanderson65if they paid them minimum wage it’s still not a living wage but they don’t If the lines did no one could afford a cruise So the only way to fix it would be to stop cruising until they do Not happening

Despicable. My gratuities for a 10-day cruise is $180. I’d gladly pay that for someone to clean my space everyday, free room service and the crew that bend over backwards to make my stay enjoyable. Of course we don’t have a problem tipping people for service. Your argument that “the cruise needs to pay their workers more” is nonsensical. So you ignore the people behind the scenes because you need “proof of service”? So the imaginary creature who delivers and picks up your luggage … the team of cooks… they all get nothing because … your sense of principle… got it. 😎
