How could anyone possibly lose a million dollars on the pokies? Honestly, you can't understand it, but that's what happened to Lana O'Shannassy. Outwardly, her life seemed so perfect. A good job, nice house, young family. But Lana had another, secret, life - one where she spent hours every day helplessly shovelling money into the poker machines.
And she's not alone. A hundred thousand here, three hundred thousand there, we found case after case of ordinary people who have lost everything because of their addiction to the pokies. And when you study the odds and the psychology of gambling, you see why you just can't win.

I was the manager of possibly highest turnover gambling pub in Kings Cross Sydney for some time back around 2010, and can honestly say I felt disgusting reconciling the pokies each morning. Some mornings after a busy 24 hour period from friday to saturday you could have up to $200,000 - $300,000 between 30 machines, sitting in cash in front of you, its hard not to feel ashamed of yourself... but when reporting figures to those above (like the guy from clubs nsw or whatever), its NEVER enough! Just take a look at how gaming rooms are run compared to the public bar... tray service, complimentary softdrinks and cakes, hot foods brought around at certain times with promotions every Tuesday and Thursday. All they care about is keeping people sitting in these rooms cut off from the world around feeding the machines every last cent. People don't understand how badly these venues manipulate their patrons and drain their pockets.

It is the gamblers fault, 100%. They are in the position they are in because of decisions they made. Not decisions other people made. I'm so sick and tired of people not taking responsibility for their actions. It's always somebody else's fault, You're not getting ahead because of racism or you are obese because there are fast food restaurants in every corner. This is all bullshit, you are simply making bad decisions for yourself.

Yes I also hate how gambling is becoming more and more accessible if that’s even possible at this point. I’ve struggled with addiction, not gambling, and people in my family have struggled with that as well as depression and committed suicide, so I understand the mindset. I hope that Texas never legalize casinos, I mean we have three within three hours but there’s horse racing already and poker rooms have started popping up, and we already have these “game rooms”

The worst part has got to be when 'the big jackpot' isn't enough close to enough anymore. I used to put money in machines that with max bet paid a max of $500 per spin. Lose a few hundred and that super rare max win wont even break you even after not so long. I couldn't imagine being behind hundreds of thousands, no bonus will be big enough at some point.

I was at a pub recently having a beer, I watched a mother and daughter win 13k on a pokie machine. The minute she won and was paid out, the first thing she did was pump more money into the same machine. I'm not sure if it is stupidity or an addiction or a combination of the 2. Crazy.

I know only too well about problem gambling. I first got hooked on pokies in 1973, and spent the next 45 or 46 years a slave to gambling. I would estimate I lost well over a million. I had a good position in an office with the rail way in NSW. Job was gone in a few years as I was helping myself to money that was not mine. I had a criminal record. I ended up gambling online and the stock markets. I in the end had to declare bankrupt. Spent my last months unable to work and totally penniless. I am now greatfull to be almost 5 years clean. I am on a pension and get by and manage to save a little. I am not against gambling. I am also an alcoholic, now 33 years sober. No one says ban alcohol. People are allergic to Strawberries. It would be ludicrous to ban strawberries. I know gambling and alcohol are not for me. I feel for those with a problem with any addiction. Thank you for this story.
@daintree98
@daintree98 10 месяцев назад
Pokies are all about fooling the mind and robbing you of your money. It would be easier winning Powerball than willing a $1000 on the pokies. The old mechanical pokies had fixed odds. But when Ainsworth stopped manufacturing them at their Rosebery factory and started introducing computerise pokies on the unsuspecting public with odds of one in a million or 50 in a million and plus their introduction into Hotels destroyed the casual drinker/punter and unleashed a toxic addition that only benefits the few at the pointy end of town. The 3 legal addictions are alcohol, cigarettes and gambling/pokie machines. You can only consume so much alcohol and cigarettes a day, but pokies with waste all your money and all your time. Reintroduce the mechanical pokies and limit them to a 20-cent coin per spin. No flashing lights, no sounds and a maximum payout of $100. That will fix the problem.

At 6:56 the interviewer asks "If 95% of the population can use them and not get hooked, why ban them?" The guy being interviewed essentially answers that because 5% of them can't control themselves, so the other 95% shouldn't get to play them! THAT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!
@daintree98
@daintree98 9 месяцев назад
@@halettebrennen8460 That is ridiculous because 24% of the population is under 18 years of age and they can't use them. Because of Government regulations, those under 18 years old can't even buy cigarettes and alcohol. If it wasn't for the 5% of the 7% of the 76% of the adult population that is addicted to pokies, the Clubs and Hotels would close down. Many Clubs closed down after the Hotels got into pokies, too much competition. So approximately 1 in 400 adults supply the majority of the money that subsidises the clubs, hotels, and casinos so their non-addicted patrons can have a cheap meal and channel $Billions of Dollars to their owners and into State Government Revenue. It's far easier to buy a restricted pokie licence from the government and see rivers of cash flow into your bank account. Just like cigarettes and alcohol is available in every shopping centre, pokie machines should be available too. The local Newsagent and the cafe should have a pokie in store so a customer can try their luck while waiting to get served. If Competition benefits the consumer, let all the shopkeepers have a chance to make an easy dollar. Maybe the novelty of the pokie-machine addition will wear off when they are on every street corner.

I took my daughter to the casino when she turned 18. I gave her the same amount as I gave myself and left the rest at home. I am not a gambler at all, but decided I must give her exposure to this while I am there to guide her. After about 15 minutes she came to me asnd said "Mum, these machines are taking all my money, lets rather go and have a milkshake." She is now 39 and I think she never went to a casino again.

I ran a hotel for 18 months. The hotel had terrific meals for cheap prices, cold beer for low prices, free music jukebox, free pool tables, and great friendly service. If people needed more space or wanted some privacy, I had other large rooms that I would open up to accommodate their needs. And my hotel had ZERO poker machines. I refused to allow them in. And my hotel was relatively a ghost town, while the hotels with poker machines were crowded all day. Lots of people - including potential customers - put a lot of pressure on my to put in a Pub TAB and a room of poker machines, but I stood my ground. And lost a hell of a lot of money as a result. So much for the good guys ...

It's a business. Guests could have drinking problems, but drinks were still served. Guests could have eating disorders, but food was still served. If guests want entertainment in the form of machines, why not give them the choice? It's not about being good or bad it about allowing adults to make their own choices and about making smarter business decisions.
@MoosesValley
@MoosesValley 10 месяцев назад
@@TheDatingLab Fair comments. I was just saying that I provided what so many problem gamblers say they want - a hotel without pokies or any other gambling options - and they never patronised my business. They all continued to go down the street to nearby hotels with rooms full of poker machines and Pub TAB. At the end of the day, of course it is their choice. But problem gamblers say one thing and then fall into their usual habits.

There was an English politician, cook, raconteur and all-round interesting guy called Clement Freud (grandson of Sigmund and brother of Lucian), who was a gambling addict. I saw him in a documentary he did about his gambling back in the 80s. He claimed that gambling addicts don't want to win; they want to lose. He said that when you've lost far more than you can afford to lose, you initially feel gutted, but underlying that feeling is another one. 'I'm alive, it didn't kill me. I can carry on.' I don't know if that's true for other gambling addicts. I'm just remembering the story.

Most addicts spend their winnings straight away if not the next day. Thankfully, the first time I lost our rent money, something kicked me in the head and I immediately went to the gaming commission and had myself banned. What people don’t realize is those machines are Scientifically designed to stimulate your Dopamine receptors, they use all sensory inputs, to include sight, sound, touch, and in Oklahoma, they serve free soda, as well as allow smoking. According to my research, the worst thing that can happen to you is to win a fairly large amount, and the more times you win even small amounts, in affects your reward receptors, which will start to make you crave for more stimulation to get the same feeling. It’s like any addiction, but I feel gambling may be worse, as it affects all your sensory inputs. I thank God every day, that I’ve never won enough to keep me at the machines. The Risk Reward is Not there for me! ****It’s sad that 60 Minutes did not bring a Mental Health Expert in to explain this!!! 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

You are absolute correct they purposely are made to manipulate the brain I've watched a documentary where designers ask the companies what percentage they want them to pay its nearly always the very lowest - they have many games now with the perception jackpot sizes and other gimics don't effect how they pay and play and that's so misleading with a very tiny one line which is a play on words written somewhere on them. I fail to understand how it's allowed many other products that mislead you and prey on your powers of perception are deemed illegal when challenged these things have free reign it's disgusting.

Yea some dude that owned a store around my way had a couple machines in the backroom. Me and my dad would play all the time and I was kind of hooked on it but never played much money. My dad gets hooked on stuff very quickly, he passed it on to me lol. He got caught though and they took the machines away. If they had them in every store I’d definitely be tempted if I had time to kill. They’re fun to play but you have to know when to stop! I saw 2 friends get hooked in gambling in front of my eyes. They would go and bring a certain amount, but as soon as that was gone they would ask to borrow money or use the expensive atm in casinos! The withdrawal fee is like 15 bucks!! I would see them gambling and they weren’t having fun anymore. They were riding that rush you get when you win or lose, and they didn’t even know it. I knew it was bad when they dropped me off, took a shower and went right back! It was a 2 hr ride! I know they told themselves, let’s just go us 2 so nobody can stop us from playing more. One of them won 5 grand one night and the next day it was gone! I don’t speak to them any more but I bet they’re still gambling. The crazy part is, they SUCK at gambling lol. One of them got into poker the same time I did and he had no idea what he was doing. He would go play every weekend though, getting cleaned out by any decent poker player. Poker is one game that you can win with skills! That’s why the same people show up in the final of WSOP.

The vast majority of people who have gambled or gamble today aren’t addicts who lose everything. I’m 31 and go to Vegas often. I’ve lost about 50k total and that’s over a 10 year period. Is it bad that I lost that much? Sure. Did it destroy my life? Not really since it’s usually a fun time. If I didn’t gamble, I’d probably be spending that amount of money elsewhere. I have family that I grew up with that had gambling addictions and its a major problem. So many people don't walk into a casino understanding that you need to spend what you're able to afford to lose. When I gamble on the slots I only spend $100 dollars and I bet $1.50-2.50 on the penny slots and if I dip below $60 I cash out and leave. The biggest issue with gambling addiction is always thinking you will make the money back that you lost
@JusCals
@JusCals 10 месяцев назад
What will turn the addiction off is the acceptance of the realisation that the pokies are not machines where you can win money, until then its all a delusion. I spent years around pokies but my brain came to the natural conclusion of no profit gaming and sitting there by myself tapping a button, seems a little crazy. I never play or want to play the pokies, you are just lining the pokets of the elite few who own and run this scam.

I think a lot of people have had a stint with playing the pokies, putting those wins back in and thereby seeing it all for what it is. It's a mugs game. Years ago I had a little taste of the addiction because just like they said in this story, you get drawn in with big wins at first, then slowly start losing it as you chase "the big win". Over a couple of months I won about $4000 and then put it back in, so luckily that experience turned me off playing the pokies. So now rather than thinking about all the money I could be winning, it feels much better thinking about all the money I've saved from *not* playing. I do feel bad for these people who are terribly addicted to pokies, but at the end of the day it's supposed to be a free country and no one's forcing them to play. Like all destructive addictions, they have to admit they have a problem and make a decision to seek help.

One day me and my dad were waiting in line to get served and we noticed this man playing, putting money in and ultimately losing and started cussing at the machine but eventually sat down at a table, then my dad asked if I wanted to try and gave me some money. I never played anything like it before and didn't know what to do, I shouted over to dad and he said just put in a coin and pull the lever and I did. That one pull won me the jackpot and everyone in that chippy cheered except the man who lost before me. The next thing I knew I was on the floor and the man was dragged out the door and beaten up by my dad other men and I was told that the man had pushed me to the floor and tried to take my winnings. To this day I still have horrors watching people play away their money for in an instant they can and will turn on anyone no matter who you are even a little schoolgirl. These people need serious help.

as a poker machine gambling addict myself for over 10 years i can assure you this video is 100% correct "the more you play the more you lose". my recommendation is if ignore the machines, but if you cannot then see it it as a little bit of fun, if you spend $20-$50 and win 2x-5x more then *LEAVE RIGHT NOW* because it is downhill from there, the machine will slowly drain your winnings and the longer you spend there you think you are almost going to win something, you think you are entitled to winning at this stage so you keep putting more money in to get that "entitled win" or at least get your money back, but you don't.

I worked in the gambling industry for 12 years and I can tell you with certainty that it is an evil industry and should be stopped. I saw a lot of good people ruined chasing the adrenaline rush of the win that happens far less than people realize.

It's not evil its made for entertainment in moderation. Like saying alcohol is evil because some people are alcoholics. Most people can go to the casino once and awhile and play these machines and they don't get addicted to them.

Right. Because addiction is a disease and is defined by the behaviors the addict exhibits surrounding the addiction. Once she fought the addiction, she got her life back. Why are you shitting on her? Isn’t this what we want to see? People getting their lives back on track and in order, even if only for the young children that depend on them?! What’s wrong with you?

The real crux of the issue with gambling addiction is that just like with alcoholics there will never be enough alcohol, with gamblers, no matter how much they win, it will never be enough. You just chase the next bigger win. Spent enough money at the casino years ago. No thanks. Saddest thing was looking around at all the older people just blowing through their retirement. Made me sick to my stomach.

Back 10 years ago I had a gambling addiction to these machines. I must of spent 30-40k. I finally got a grip and haven't played since. I do get the urge from time to time but I moved to a city that doesn't have them and I no longer go to casinos. It's an addiction.

Hats off to those interviewed ! Takes allot to admit and tell others in warning of the slippery slope ahead if gambling begins to become predominant in ones life. Cheers from Northern California ! Same story half way around the world ! Overall , responsible Governments are in place to protect society as a whole not just profit margins for the rich to get richer! Regulations are crucial for a prosperous healthy society . These casinos should be thankful that they are even aloud to operate in the first place .

I’ve seen this problem first hand and I blame it for the death of someone I loved very much as she couldn’t accept what she had done, she died of other causes but I blame the stress of the gambling..And from being one of the nicest people I ever met gambling made her a completely different person..Pokies are worse than drugs because with drugs you can take so much before you OD where as there’s no limit with gambling.

What people need to understand is that when they are speaking to problem gamblers, these people are sincere and telling the truth, when theyre speaking to the ceo of clubs nsw, he picks his words very carefully. He doesnt say "i know" he says "i believe". People arent taught in school how much of a difference something as subtle as that makes in court.
