Tuffy Henderson is a genius, and his layout shows it. Insane in the best possible way. :) Visit the channel shop: hycetrains.com... Join my discord: / discord Become an ES&D Train Crew Member and get extra perks! / @hyce777
I still miss going to this layout, but it was nice to join in on paying Tuffy a visit. Next to Eddie, Barry and Craig, Tuffy's a true gentleman and you can never have a dull conversation with the guy. Also, I'm glad the intro turned out well considering I filmed it, though I still find it humerus that you went for the wrong door first. 😂
One of my favorite features: He didn’t want to knock streetlights loose while reaching across the layout, so he custom fabbed flexible lights using piano wires. So aaaaaaall those street lights you see, can bend all the way over and straighten themselves back up if you knock into them. And of course, they’re all hooked up and lit.
convert to N and you will double your track without changing the amount of space. Model railroading is all about the trains, and N scale is the best cross between space and scenic detail and the amount of train for the space being used.
DAMN! I'd call this my idea of a "dream layout" since I model N scale, but my 6'-3" frame would much prefer a layout where I can stay upright. Still, amazing detail, and I can't believe all his cars are individually numbered! Not to mention the tiny tiedowns!
There is nothing that I can add to your commentary on this work of art and engineering genius. I am fortunate to be retired and have lots of spare time, but clearly this guy must have 72 hour days at 7 days a week. How can he create such individual model details, scratch build, install electric and operate such a huge system, is beyond belief. Thank you and well done from, Newcastle, England.
I think this and Eddie's layout are different enough to BOTH qualify as the coolest you've ever seen. The thing that make them cool are just too different to directly compare.
I love this So well done! My fear of small spaces would be hard for me I that I would run screaming from this space Please forgive my negativity and fears
Its cozy, lol. I'm pretty tall, but for whatever reason, I absolutely love micro cars. Will I ever fit in a honda N600? Or a Vespa car? Nope love em though 😂
I think I've solved my internal conflict as to which scale to model - Just do several! O-Scale on the bottom, HO on top. Maybe even a little HOn30 for mountain area 🤔. Also, the use of rollie stools negates the need to stand.
does anyone on here just love watching model railroads for fun. I'm subbed to Sam's Trains, even though I have probably less than $1000 in HO trains, and will probably never buy anything he's reviewing, it's just fun to watch the train
That is AMAZING. The level of detail on something that small is INSANE. Personally, I'd rather do 3-rail O-scale or larger because I don't have the most stable hands on the planet. My dad could do smaller scale because he's an electronics technician by trade AND has hands that are more stable than mine. I could solder wires and program something with a little guidance, but my dad could do it with a quick RU-vid video and a diagram. Some of the oil field equipment my dad gets in from the field has a rat's nest of wires for him to sort out, which is difficult enough, then he has to put new software and operatingsystems on the equipment, and that's a nightmare. The good news is that he doesn't have to do this on military grade equipment. "Military grade" is just a fancy way of saying "built by the cheapest bidder", which explains a LOT about the Grumman Long Life Vehicle the United States Postal Service currently uses.
This layout is a beast. I can't believe the "access panel" with the cut and the river in it. The blue modern yard lights next to a few sodium vapor streetlights are a beautiful touch. The little rolly chairs upstairs and the mad ceiling chair just make the whole thing. Thank you for sharing this piece of wonderful insanity.
Hey Hyce if you’re still in Houston there is a cool SP 2-10-2 if you’d like to check it out. I’m the CMO for Texas Railway Preservation Association the owner of SP 982
Hi Mark, Tuffy’s layout is sooo ultra cool! Everything about it is beautiful. As a detail person myself, I so appreciated the tiny scenes he created. The space felt cozy and relaxing. Like going into a choo choo cocoon! I’m impressed with the fabulous lighting installation, not just of the rooms but of the layout itself. Like Leighton said nothing done at random but with purpose. Loved those brilliant rolling chairs. The hidden train compartment was amazing complete with scenery and a creek-WOW! And to echo you and Leighton, I loved the old Lionel trains he had. For sure an amazing and so creative use of space. Many thanks to Tuffy for sharing his beautiful layout with us. And to you Professor for making yet another excellent field trip video, and as always cheers to you!
The Lionel is for his granddaughters to run. The baseball field is actually a softball field (his granddaughters play softball!) My favorite feature is that all the streetlights are flexible and bend and straighten if you knock into them, instead of snapping or coming loose.
I have no model railroads, but these visits to the most amazing layouts are such a treat! It is incredible the amount of detail and work that goes into these.
These layout tours are make the 3/4 idiots layout look like it needs a lot of work. But I guess that what happens when this layout has over a decade of work and the other has maybe a year or so. Y’all definitely have a high bar to try to hit if you’re going to be like these tours. I have faith by the time y’all have the man hours into y’all’s as this have you can pull it off. Maybe Mark can keep the plaster on the layout next time
That Duracho was wild. I was in Laredo after chasing 2816, never been in one before. Stayed in a recently renovated motel, where lo and behold, they forgot to hook up a roof drain. So here comes hundreds of gallons of eater just pouring into the motel through the false ceiling. Good times lol
N scale. Yup, i should have chosen that. But i chose HO scale. And i bought a lot of stuff for it already. And i got a room available. 3.7 meters by 2.7 meters. I can expand the room by knocking down a wall, or 2, and that would increase it to lets say double, maybe 2/3rd increase of space. Now i am going to use the first room, and think about expanding lateron. But i wish i had thought about scale a bit more before buying the stuff.
I could never stand being in a room with a ceiling that low...nice layout though. How warm was it in there?...I mean Houston in the summertime....yikes.
Hay hyce is it true that you were on a railroad series back in the day called “ the full bucket trainers” or something like that as a fireman Because I’ve been hearing a rumour about it recently And I was just like no way ! One of these guys who inspired my childhood is actually doing really well
This layout reminded me of one in the UK built in a crawl space under the house, accessed by a trap door. Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zGY5BvmgkXA.html
with my back and bad joints i could never go see this. But fantastic. great job. makes me think about my attic. but my Attic gets stupid hot most of the year. if i could afford a new roof then i could super insulate the roof from the attic area. attic to ceiling is just cutting wood to walk on. as it has some insulation already. i do ho scale. so would be tight but doable. a bit more sq room than my front room but that room has head space. small house.
painters, sculptors, and drawers are artists and so are model railroaders especially the likes of modelers like Tuffy Henderson who merge the likes of creativity and resourcefulness to create a truly unique layout that fits his needs.
That is a beautiful layout, and "absurd in the best way," yes! :D I was blown away by the fold-down bit having its own scene too. I love N gauge. :) I sometimes dream of building a layout in a glass-topped table, but I have too many other hobbies. It'd be fair to say that I try to turn every simulation game I play into a sort of model railroad, literally in the case of Transport Tycoon, figuratively in Kerbal Space Program where I'm building infrastructure in the form of mining ships with automated fuel factories, tankers and space stations to support all the comings and goings, plans for colonies... :) It's going to take some doing, especially with bugs to work around.
An uncle has O scale, and my father had OH scale (mostly boxed away sadly)... but man, if I wanted to build at a scale just to run around my apartment, N would be it. And hell, seeing that layout, maybe I'll dabble with some of it going forward. Man, that was so cool. Thanks for sharing.
This layout reminds me of the one I saw my first N scale cab forward on. It was owned by Scale Rails of Southwest Florida before they started to mainly focus on their HO layout.
