@@K4R3N That’s not how NTRP ratings work. They’re based on competitive results relative to other players - nothing to do with what stokes look like. If Mark beats enough high 3.5 players or some 4.0s, then he’s a 4.0.

This is gigantic progress. Mark displays remarkable talent even in the short time on the court with Ian doing the progressions and making progress during. Totally digging Mark's great attitude during the sessions. As I have always said; the root of all this is a coach who is so in touch with human psychology and manifesting movement. Ian is hands down the best coach. Cheers! M

Yeah, I saw one tying to hide the eastern grip in the loading phase keeping the racquet on the edge and opening up to the waiter's tray just before contact. Hurts even looking at it.

I've just started playing and I'm hoping by learning this early on it'll be much easier to transition given I only have about 6 weeks of muscle memory for my waiter tray serve

Regarding the toss, I've heard some coaches advocating for low toss and fast swing (almost no time at the trophy phase,) some for higher toss and a bit pause at the trophy phase before launching into the upward swing. But from a physics perspective, it depends on the physique and height of the player. Theoretically, the higher the point of contact, the better the serve, if you can generate the same speed. This is why taller players always have the advantage. So Kyrgios, being tall already, would do just fine with the low toss and fast swing. But for a short player, a higher toss would be better, and we even saw players like Dolgopolov serving like a volleyball serve. On the women side, I saw Leyla Fernandez doing similar high jump.

Nice job... I think Nick over at Intuitive Tennis calls the process of fixing the waiter tray serve as an "excruciatingly slow" process LOL because he says it can take a year or more of solid effort and video feedback

Thank you Ian, really appreciate the honesty around the time required for this. This is something I need to work on but quite frankly I am scared to do so due to the amount of effort I know it’ll involve. Out of interest, what sort of benefits would a player expect to get from the transition? What sort of gain in speed?
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 4 месяца назад
Really can't put a number to it, Bob. In all honesty, there's a large range of ability/results while using a "push" motion. I've seen some pretty solid push motion serves, all be it really low percentage. Assuming a really average "push" motion result I think a 50% increase in racquet head speed transitioning to a quality "pull" motion is pretty fair.

Nice vid. What about keeping the hitting elbow lower than shoulder? A coach suggested keeping it lower. What’s the difference and is there any benefit to either? Thanks

how about adding another step between fake toss and the live toss and hit? Suspend the ball at the contact point with something

I’ve often wanted someone to stand to the side with a fishing pole and a ball hanging right at the perfect toss and contact spot. Just so i could visualize just where i want to contact the ball

How common is people pronating too early from the pull position you described? I recently recorded myself for the first time and noticed that I pronate extremely early from that position. Does this need to be fixed or is it one of those things that fixes it self as I get more comfortable at swinging faster?

I don’t understand what you mean by a pulling motion. If I can understand that I might be able to stop pushing the ball.

Love love love this. I'm 39 and having the same problems transitioning to a pulling motion. So inspirational to see that someone (who isn't a junior) can totally retrain their muscle memory and develop a serve like this. Just when I think I've got it, I video myself and realise that I'm reverting back to the waiter tray. It happens so quickly, it's impossible to stop myself or even know I'm doing it. Appreciate the explanations of the progressions you had Mark go through. Also like how you don't sugercoat it and make it clear that months of hard work are necessary. Not sure I can stop playing matches in the meantime though, I love competing too much! Thanks Ian and keep up the good work!! 💪🏼💪🏼

I don't think it is that complex. Just lead with your elbow and you can't preform a waiter's tray. Creates an unconscious and automatic racket drop. Get to trophy and then lead with your elbow like you would doing a butterfly machine in the gym.

Nothing about tennis is "that complex". That doesn't mean it's easy to do.
