The Biggest Ship On The Great Lakes

The Paul R. Tregurtha is a 1013 foot freighter hauling taconite iron ore from Minnesota's Iron Range. Here it is leaving out of Duluth's Harbor at Canal Park. The Aerial Lift Bridge was built so Duluth residents living on Park Point peninsula could cross into Canal Park. The bridge lifts to allow Fishing and Sailboats access to Lake Superior from Duluth Harbor. There could be up to a 30 minute wait during times when large ships pass through.

The ship blowing its horn AFTER it is under the bridge, and the return signal horn from the bridge, is a customary salute between the ship captain and bridge engineer.

@@bnsrks3326 I know this is an old comment, but tri 5ford is completely correct, and it's not just Duluth either, many ships salute (1 Long 2 Short Captains Salute, and 3 Long 2 Short Masters Salute) all over the Great Lakes. St. Marys River, Superior, Two Harbors, St. Clair River, Detroit River, and many other places. It's been a Great Lakes tradition for many years, for as long as whistles have been on lake ships I'd imagine. And basic research can even confirm this, please don't go around assuming things. The Great Lakes has a completely different tradition than the rest of the world of shipping. I hope this info is useful.

Because the captain use to get on the radio and say hey bridge ...thanks for the open have a great day/night....but it got to where the boat traffic got to be to heavy......so the freighters just shorten it to just blast the horn and that’s where it started...it’s a lot quicker...and does the exact same

Interesting side note. If that ship the Paul R. Tregurtha had its bow on the bottom of the lake straight down where the wreckage of the Edmond Fitzgerald is, 300 feet of the stern would still be out of the water. And no part of the Duluth city is higher than altitude than the ship is long. The Duluth hill is not higher than 1,600 feet above sea level. Man, that is a big ship!!

According to google, the length of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier, for comparison to the Tregurtha, is: Overall: 1,092 feet (332.8 m); Waterline: 1,040 feet (317.0 m) So the Tregurtha is only 79 feet shorter than an aircraft carrier, but I don't think I'd want to try and land a plane on her.

This isn't just the largest ship on the Great Lakes, it's actually the largest object in the solar system, it's over ten billion light years tall, ten billion light years long and 400 billion light years wide. Truly a magnificent ship, you could put well over a million Earths in it and it would still float on lake superior, and in fact they have! Fun fact, the ship in this video is actually so massive that there are entire galaxies inside it's hold that haven't even been observed by mankind, that's how big this ship is. And yet as you can see it still floats! Scientists believe that God himself lives within the hull of this ship. Not bad for a ship built by a bunch of drunken immigrants over a HUNDRED days ago!

The Tregurtha is currently, and always has been the largest ship to ever sail on the Great Lakes (Excluding the St. Laurence Seaway). With that being said, you are actually correct, there are many ships in existence that are much larger than the Tregurtha, but they don't enter the Great Lakes, mainly because ships larger than 800 feet can't fit through the locks on the Welland Canal, which also means the thirteen 1000 footers currently sailing on the Great Lakes can't go farther than Lake Erie.

Hey there, any of you heard of the flat earth movement? Anyone interested in debunking it once and for all? I’ve designed an experiment that should do just that, I just don’t live anywhere near enough to water (350 miles), and work 6 days a week. Nor do I have the extra money to spare. But I figured for those that are on the water already during a lot of their spare time, and especially those that already shoot videos while out on the water may have nothing to lose in doing this if you’re interested in the premise. You would need two people, two boats, both with GPS, two good telescopes, and preferably two of the best video cameras that money can buy, or four would be even better, and two of the best still frame cameras that money can buy. I’m sure that’s a bit to ask for, but the better the focus and resolution the better. Flat earthers obviously believe that there is no curvature of earth, so they constantly argue that boats do not disappear over the horizon. They use all sorts of arguments like heat distortion, tide, swells, poor camera resolution, etcetera. So my goal is to present to them a video that they can’t argue with. Keep the video on your channel for the views and I’ll post links. So here’s what it entails: You and a buddy go out on 2 boats on any large enough body of water (I think with at least 10 miles clear line of sight oughta do it) with GPS on a clear day with a temperature significantly low enough to take heat distortion out of the equation. Make sure it is a calm day to take swells out of the equation. Make sure it's low tide to keep that out of the equation too. Determine how many feet above sea level you would be looking through the telescopes at, and also how many feet above sea level the tallest part of the boats are. Reply to this comment and let me know these heights and I can figure out all of the numbers we need. You can look up the distance to the horizon at telescope viewing height above sea level and also for the tallest part of the boat (if it's taller than the telescope viewing height). Google “earth curvature calculator” to determine the distance to the horizon at a given height above sea level. The distance to the horizon at 6 feet above sea level is supposed to be 3 miles so let's use that as an example. Both of you drive out to open sea and using the GPS get yourselves 3 miles apart. We will figure out the exact numbers we need prior. View each other’s boats through the telescope. If earth is round it should look as though the other boat is sitting on top of the horizon. Take many pictures and video and also video of the GPS proving the distance between the boats. After you observe your findings now go twice the distance to the horizon for the height of the tallest point on the boat. If the earth is round you shouldn't be able to see the other boat anymore. If the earth is flat you should be able to see it same as before but just twice as far away. If you observed that the boat disappeared over the horizon, now drive towards each other and watch and film each other appear over the horizon. Film every aspect of this endeavor and be sure to use the camera at the heights used in the calculations. Also, footage of the GPS showing the distance between the boats in real time shown on split screen would be great. If anyone is interested, reply and let me know. Before you plan to do this, it would be great if you could send me the height of the tallest point on both of the boats above the water, and the height your eyes would be above the water where you would be holding a camera and looking through a telescope on both boats as well. I know this is a lot, but it will be worth it if you’re as disturbed by the flat earth movement as I am.
