Wow. That was a really good observation about using tongue root tension to improve the perceived sound. It is REALLY hard to not attempt to shape the sound to where it sounds best to YOU. Recording is everything! One of the most difficult things for me is to hold strong pressure and not let it affect the throat tension.....and then everything else. I still get louder above A#4. These things take time so good thing I decided against doing some Journey for my show next week. Thanks for all you do, Dan. You have the best free content that I have seen on the Internet.

You if u go louder at any point it means that you do not transition correctly in that place. So I wouldn't recommend that kind of training cause it may give you lots of bad habits.

Super Sexy Dr. Dan, I'm a saxophonist and I've NEVER wanted to sing. Five years ago, a vocalist extended some advice. She explained that instrumental compositions are no longer in demand and suggested that I add vocal tunes to my repertoire. I immediately started memorizing vocal songs. After adding vocal tunes, my salary and bookings increased 350 percent!! FAST FORWARD FIVE YEARS........ On 1.6.19, my voice became impaired and it’s been a nasty journey. Playing the saxophone is my passion, but it’s currently on hold. I was ignorant of proper technique and vocal heath. We love your videos. You have a profound presence, informative content, and a magnetic encouraging delivery. Your videos are better than binge watching the best Netflix movies! RCA

It took me quite a while to grasp the concept of using more/less air. I had to understand and learn to differentiate air volume vs. how much air is passing through the vocal folds.

In this video you mostly talk about not exhaling too much or too fast. But in one of your quotes from Morris & Chapman, they also speak of not inhaling too much, since this tends to lead to the need to exhale more. I've generally found this to be true, although I do worry that I might not really be expanding enough and use the fullest lung capacity and support. Perhaps the answer is that I've got to learn to breathe less often and to increase the number of words and phrases per breath. Like many of us at early stages of our singing experience, I worry too much about running out of breath when there is really no need to. Again, all this is part of the intricacies of breath management. Thanks for the video.

Tounge retention so very important! Thanks for that! For me as a singer, I'ts a conscious effort to keep the tounge down gently behind the lower teeth. If ya don't I'ts a sure fire way to close the throat completely up. I like your channel!

I'm glad you found the information about tongue tension useful! You're absolutely right, maintaining a relaxed and correctly positioned tongue is crucial for open and unrestricted vocal production. It can certainly take conscious effort, especially when we're just starting out or working on challenging material. It's great to hear that you're applying this knowledge to your own singing practice. Keep up the good work, and I'm thrilled that you're enjoying the channel! 🎵👍🎤

I am confused, Dr. Dan. When you talk about pushing in your first vocal exercise, what does pushing mean? Trying to push more air out? What does it feel like? What are you engaging in order to push that you should be engaging? Does pushing mean that a singer tries to reach higher notes by utilizing his or her abdominal muscles (pushing more with the belly) in order to push the note higher? Rather than--say--just letting the note ascend or float higher? Part of the reason I'm confused is because the quote you use by Morris and Chapman then states that tongue tension is often the result of a lack of abdominal support. So it seems that we get tongue tension if we don't support with our belly, but then we push if we do support with our belly. Isn't tongue tension the reason someone would likely be pushing in the first place? In order to squeeze sound through that constriction? Also, I understand that pushing may feel or sound louder to the singer, but not necessarily be perceived that way by the audience. But, what is the appropriate way to increase volume? Is it through increased abdominal engagement/increased air pressure? Or something else?

Dan, your range and voice quality sounds a lot like mine! I’m a “tenor/soprano” with a very good singing style but I realize there is much room for improvement. My breath control needs work! Need to relax the abdominal muscles more, as well. I’m 64, been singing all my life but started solo work at 28. Never had training, learned everything the hard way. Only in the last couple of weeks did I discover that there are many, many good helps online, such as your channel ❤️ HOW did we ever exist without the internet?

I struggle so much with this. It’s sometimes helpful to practice high notes above my passagio that will only come out properly with lower pressure and airflow. Ab4 - A4 are good examples. My passagio tops out at G4, and the following notes sound strained and breathy unless I focus on providing lots of support, but only the pressure required. (Separating these two concepts is more than half the battle, and I’m not there yet.) Volume comes from trying to crescendo only with the head voice and focusing on maximizing resonance. It’s very difficult, particularly since I have a “bigger” voice that seems to require a lot of pressure generally. Or maybe I don’t and it doesn’t. Like I said, I REALLY struggle with this.

Very informative video. I once learned from a teacher to exaggerate the abdominal expansion in attempt to learn to do diaphragmatic breathing. This has actuallly caused me tongue root and jaw tension, because now I feel like I taught myself a muscle memory to always push my abdomen out when tryin to "breath correctly". So it make sense that tongue root tension is caused by bad breathing and support but what advice would you give me to fix my problem really? I am often tense in my abs too because now I habitually tense my stomach regardless what I do if its singing or not..

Hey Dr Dan. I been suffering with this jaw and tongue root tension for a very long time. I also feel this tension right before singing or even speaking, so during inhalation. The way I understood your video is that I need to work on my breathing, am I correct? However, I been working a lot on my breathing without any success for years and I mostly just feel tense in my abs too. Could my breathing be a cause to the tongue root tension? What am I doin wrong? How can I fix it? Honestly speaking my dream is to be able to talk again and not feel a constant tension in my larynx, tongue and jaw. And ofcourse.. to not feel supertense in my abs when I support my voice. Regards Claudia

My range with falsetto is two and half octave and I have exceptional pitch control with falsetto... But when I tried to sing normally I only got one and half octave with much difficulty... almost everytime I tried to sing normally what goes in my head was "how in the world other people sing". lots of my friend never trained their voice but still had greater range and pitch control...
