This might be the biggest spider I've seen in the wild, and it's just hanging out in the stream that runs through my backyard. Only question is, can I catch it?
Most nature shows take place in far off locations or tell you not to try this at home. Here on MyWildBackyard my goal is to get you up close and personal with the fascinating wildlife where I live and show you that you can have a wildlife adventure of your own right at home in your own backyard! Have a taste for exploring and love weird creatures? Join the adventure by subscribing!
Always use caution when exploring your backyard. Read up and educate yourself on dangerous species in your area, and know not to touch them. Contact local wildlife experts if a dangerous animal is causing problems where you live.

The biggest spider I've ever encountered was a massive tarantula in Guatemala. It crawled out of my backpack and launched its urticating hairs at me. I'm not sure if I got some in my nose or what, but my sinuses started to sting and I remember partially losing my sense of smell for a couple hours after that. It was probably a good six inches across.

Amazing work Spencer, Six-spotted Fishing Spiders are some of my all-time favorites arachnids to catch, and their adaptations are truly amazing. Watching them hunt is a privilege I've only been afforded a few times, but it is spectacular to observe when they take down a fish. That was probably the most well-behaved fishing spider I have ever seen, she really sat nice and still for you! Great shots as always, you really made her look larger than life. I can't wait for the next episode of CICI, I've been excited for that one for a long time! - Harrison and Evan

You totally deserve it, all the hard work you put into these videos really shows! Now the biggest spider I’ve ever handled was a tarantula in Costa Rica. It was just hanging out above an outdoor sink, and I just had to try and pick it up. Thanks for showing us that you can ID a fishing spiders gender by the pedipalps, I would have never known that. Likewise, seeing them actually stay afloat on the water is really neat, the water just looks like it’s displaced under their legs. I was wondering if the female fishing spiders ever eat a male on occasion after mating, I know not all spiders do that, but I’m not too sure if that’s the case for these guys. Amazing stuff man, can’t wait for more, see you at 2k indeed :D
@MyWildBackyard
@MyWildBackyard 3 года назад
In fishing spiders the size difference is negligible, but yeah the males will have weird looking grippy things on their pedipalps. I hope to one day catch a tarantula, but for now I’m confined to what I can find in NC!

I was about 14 years old growing up in the deep mountains of eastern Kentucky, played outside most my days. Where I lived was a decent sized creek that ran behind my house, so being the young one I was I played in the creek often. One day I seen something literally jetting across the water as fast as lightning, I walked a little closer, & to my surprise, was this massive spider. The thing did a full sprint & I watched it get away. It was so big I could still see it going on down the creek up to a distance of about 30ft. I’m not so positive, but after watching this, & looking back, I’m very sure that this was the arachnid I seen. Thanks for the awesome video!

Glad to hear it! Honestly for me it started out as an adrenaline rush. Wow discovered your channel last night and I subbed right away because it's awesome!!!!!! I live in Canada, in northern Ontario to be exact. In regards to this video we refer to these giant beauties as Dock spiders. I live way out in the country at a large children's summer camp and let me tell you when you get 200 kids running out on the swim docks for morning swim you wouldn't believe the size of these spiders coming up through the docks once all those kids go marching out. I've been working here over 40 years and I still can't believe the size of these guys year after year... One thing interesting about these Dock spiders is whenever we do dock repairs we always find these deep running and holes in our blue foam flotation billets. It's almost like their venom melts away on these billets so they can burrow in these under the docks. Maybe you've heard of this and can let me know if their venom could some how do this? Anyway big fan of your channel ❤ Happy Easter and all the best to you! Cheers from Canada.

I have arachnophobia and went into the pool shed to sort a pump out, when I turned round there was a huntsman the size of a plate on the back of the door lol I literally froze and had to text my wife 😆 living there did help my phobia somewhat with exposure, but once back in the UK I'm as bad as ever, even with the small ones we have. It's quite irrational but I just freeze. Enjoying your videos, hoping this kind of exposure will help.

As long as we didn't bother them we lived in peace. We had an ice-cream container and a dinner plate to move them if they got somewhere we didn't want. The only thing that weirded me out was the galloping and the sheer speed of them.

I was fishing from a Canoe in one of the lesser known ponds in a Northern State back in about 1992 or 3 and saw TWO huge spiders (quite a bit larger than the one you had) sitting on the leaves of a vine that was wrapped around a branch of a huge Fir Tree that was hanging down close too the water. One of these spiders was an almost Metallic jet black as it was like a shiny midnight and the other was a dull yellowish orange color, both were solid colors no markings or anything and were the two biggest spiders I've seen in my life! easily 5-6 inches. Had I not observed these two moving I would have assumed someone was playing a joke on me, as I though up until that time I was familiar with most of the critters in my home state, (little did I know at the time just how wrong I really was!). I instinctively turned the Canoe slightly to avoid going anywhere closer too these two critters as I had visions of them jumping from the leaf to my face as I passed and decided avoidance is better than knowledge that day!

Honestly I just wear bug spray and do frequent tick checks cause the shorts give me better mobility. If I’m deep in rattler country I’ll wear jeans though. Glad you’re enjoying the videos! Lemme know what stuff you find! (Edit: autocorrect is drunk)

I live in Tennessee and saw a gigantic spider. After researching, the closest I can come is an eastern parson spider. It was as big as a saucer. So big, I could see it under my foot. I was surprised, but it might have killed out the brown recluses. This story is true.

Um yah! 😳 I used to camp up neat Peterborough Ontario and I came across these little monsters many times. The largest I've ever seen, had about a five inch leg span, EASILY!!! I was used to seeing them hanging around the docks and even had a large one crawling towards me on a ski rope, WHILE I WAS SKIING. I threw the rope one way and cut to the other. Apparently, it wasn't in the mood to swim and started skating towards me on the water. I flailed my arms until it went away. I'm not sure where it went, nor did I care. 2 or 3 inches were common and I was bit by one. YEEOOUCH!!! It burned for hours but I didn't have too much of a reaction otherwise. But I never realized that THEY CAN GET ENORMOUS until I found a granddaddy under my canoe. It was, as stated before, at least 5 inches by legs pan because it would've covered the palm of my hand easily. I wanted to bring it home because no one believed that we actually have a spider if that size near us, but I WAS NOT GOING TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR IT!!! It was huge, so I showed my parents and we left it alone and it left us alone. Needless to say, I was shocked to see the size and so where my parents. Lol I would have never gotten any closer to it than I was. It was something nightmares are made of. Literally, at least 5 inches. Absolutely HUGE!!!🤯😳👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I live in Central Virginia, in the woods, on a creek. Fishers are my absolute favorite spiders. We get them, and Wolf's in our basement, a lot. We try not bother the Wolf spiders, too much, because they really get traumatized, and sometimes roll over and die. My wife and Son and I, have a great appreciation for all the wonderful critters we have out here. We have a fence lizard that sits next to us when we sit in our gazebo in the evening. Now it's getting too cold. I hate winter.

Love me those fence lizards. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of winter either, especially since poking around for bugs is how I make a living these days! I’ll spend some time in Florida this year, they get weird stuff year round 😂

I need a honest answer from you, from what you have caught and seen between the dark fishing spider and spotted fishing spider dolomedes vittatus what gets larger from your observations? I'm paying hundreds of dollars to obtain some dolomedes vittatus aka spotted fishing spiders and would like your input:)

I just saw one of these in Central NY yesterday. I was so surprised because it was the same size and was the largest spider I have ever saw myself. I thought it was a wolf spider initially so after some digging online, I have learned that it was indeed this same species. I found it by a creek and I tried to pour water on it to make it move, but it was unphased, which made me realize it enjoys the water a lot and had to be another type of spider. Amazing to know they get that big without being a tarantula.

There are quite a few spiders that get surprisingly big! Fishing spiders and huntsman spiders are probably the biggest, with tropical wandering spiders getting up there as well. Truly insane creatures to see in person, I’ll tell you that.

I believe I saw both those in 2 days. That fishing spider with the front legs crossed was on my wall (I still have the picture of it), and the dark fishing spider was on my ceiling the next day. At least I think it was a dark fishing spider. The first one was no doubt a fishing spider. I'm not shocked.....I live along a lake and the creek runs through my yard, and I have elephant ears. Plus the hundreds of frogs here make for a feast for them. Lol

I saw a huge spider like that on my garage door coming home late at night. It was tarantula sized but I live in southern New England. It had to be one of those. I’ve never seen a spider that large before. A stream runs by the side of my house with wetlands directly behind me so I’m guessing it was some sort of fishing spider.

Off of Bowman Branch Highway, Orangeburg South Carolina by a stream, I found two huge spiders that would make a easy meal of the biggest spider you showed in your video,.I can't say what kind of spider it was, and I can't say the spider I seen was a fishing spider, it look like a cross between a gigantic wolf spider and super fishing spider, but was sluggish. This spider I'm describing, look like it would easily prey on anoles and a smaller rough green snake. I seen the spider on real small bushes over a narrow stream.

One time at a artificial beach in a forest in Kentucky near a caved in area with a lake going through it, I saw a very large spider sitting on a cinder block in the water, it was maybe 4 inches across or so, but I always thought it was a wolf spider, but never knew about fishing spiders until now so who knows :)

Largest spiders I have seen is a Carolina Wolf spider which was 4.5 inches in leg length and a Spotted Fishing spider which was 5.5 inches in leg length. Weirdly enough, the fishing spider I saw was on inside my garage and I don’t live near a creek. This was during an unusually severe drought, so the creeks were completely dried up. That is why I think the spider was hunting on land as a backup option/ last resort option since it couldn’t get its normal prey do to the drought drying up the creeks. It was definitely a Spotted Fishing spider since the markings matched the description of said spider. It was also not a Huntsman as I live too far north to get those spiders (so far at least). I in southern CT so I will probably get them in the near future as our local climate is warming up.

Last year me and my GF were canoeing in Algonquin Park, in Ontario Canada. We passed this abandoned small island with some old camp cottages on it and we explored a little bit and were about to take off on the old dock, when my GF thought it would be nice to enjoy a cold one on the dock, so we did and 5 mins later we set off. As we were slowly pulling away (along the dock, about 2 feet from it), i seen this HUGE fishing spider running along the edge of the dock! Thing was massive! Like, im used to coming across this things from time to time, sometimes carrying their eggsac, but this one was even bigger than the one in this video, maybe 50% -100% bigger. Caught it on video as we were drifting further away. Moral of my story is NEVER chill on an old dock needlessly! Probably had a whole bunch of them just below us!
