@clintbustwood4800 It's just the first line of defense. You weed out a lot of potential problems by keeping crazy people in the dark. Since you can never know who's crazy and who isn't, you just quietly don't tell anyone about your vulnerabilities. You don't lie, you just don't bring it up. That stops 95% of potential incidents right there. Now, you only need to worry about the really motivated people who are actively looking for a way to hurt you.

I worked for an underground line locating company for 1.5 years: for those that don't know, contractors induce a frequency onto a metal line or a wire following a plastic line and use a receiver to physically walk out the path of pipelines and phone lines so they can be marked on the ground surface for ongoing construction work. I had an electrical substation I visited up to 3 times a week for ongoing 811 locate tickets for stuff like building new fences, construction adjacent to the property, underground lines being rerouted. For over a year, the security measures on that 20+ acre electrical substation was A ROPE KNOT ON THE GATE. No power company staff to validate whether you were supposed to be there, no security to log visitors entering or leaving, no cameras anywhere near the gate, no need to call ahead to get access, no locks, nothing. Just an 8' foot border fence and a granny knot on the gate. Somebody high up must have had a shit fit after seeing all that because one day I pulled up and they had a security guard parked at the gate with new locks, visitor logs, needing a reference to get in and full-time security escorts while working in the facility.

There were plenty of people who were not employees of the power company entering and leaving without any log or screening. Having just lost power for a full week for 25% of the city of Houston because a tornado knocked down a half dozen towers, between two sub-stations, I would prefer a lot more security for my infrastructure than a rope knot and optimism.

@evanwilliams3645 I worked for a cloud service provider as a data centre technician and another in house IT job for one of the worlds largest gambling corporations, and I can tell you the industry has wizened up to the more conventional methods of physically breaching security but I reckon with some planning you could probably bring down a large portion of the biggest websites on the internet for a significant amount of time if you knew what to look for and government based services are years behind the private sector so that would be even easier. Its scary how fragile some services are in certain areas when they are so widely used. Hell, just the other week Andres Freund found a backdoor on a piece of linux software that could have lead to one of the most devastating cyber attacks in history, the type of attack that could target virtually any machine running SSH and it was almost pure autistic hyperfixation and luck that he saved us.

For those that dont know, high to medium voltage transformers (those that drop voltage from millions to thousand and thousands to 3phase 400v that comes to your house least in here Europe) have massive to large amount of oil inside that both cools and prevents arching inside the transformer. If its damaged and oil leaks out, this causes arching and failure of the components. Worst case scenario is that there is oil mist inside while oil is leaking trough say a crack in the casing, arc is produced that is hot enough to ignite the oil vapor and transformer detonates like a bomb, throwing hot burning oil everywhere. Very fun times in bushfire season. This is why in power stations their transformers are located in bunkers to prevent damage from the explosion, but this makes cleaning the mess of cracked casing when there is half a meter of oil on floor of the bunker rather interesting to clean. Transfer stations like in video have them on the open, since this was not considered a treat and those need being smaller air movement to enable cooling of the oil. The explosion part tends to happen only when oil level drops slowly, allowing the arch it self throw oil into air in mist, but less so when leak is massive below the oil level and there is no bubbling etc happening that would throw the oil into air inside the transformer. Attacker most definitely had expert knowledge, most likely ether well researched by them selfs, or receiving this info second hand from someone whos working in energy sector. One must know this to able to take down the power station for long time, specially when there is limited number of transformers in this size that are produced per year, that are calculated to be just enough to replace broken ones and to build new sub stations, or just regular maintenance replacement. My suspicion is hostile state was testing sabotage on the grid, or given the response, it might be false flag. But then again this did brought attention to issue and this is why one should look into producing your own power and be self sufficient in case all substations go boom boom in future. Wood gas generator would be optimal since you can find fuel literally everywhere, but these things need to be researched and tested to work long periods of time before shit hits the fan. Its like going fight a war and only on the first contact with the enemy learning to shoot.

I used to be an HVAC tech for a comoany that had a contract with centurylink for a pretty broad area. The little remote switching stations where we serviced and replaced AC units housed fiber optic lines and apparently the cell towers still depend on them somehow, not to mention there were still a fair amount of landlines going through them then. They were all woefully under secured. Some didnt even have barbed wire fences, just a deadbolt lock to secure them. The only alarms they had were tied to thermostats to warn of overheating, in which case wed get a call. So much critical infrastructure is so vulnerable. About 10 years ago a community near me had their water tower shot with a rifle. To repair that one little hole they had to drain it completely, repair the hole and a bunch of other crap i would've never imagined. It took days for it to be up and running again.

Yeah I can confirm this x100, I live in a hydro power valley/mountain area in Norway. When they switch out transformers or big masts that are damaged or running out of capacity or getting too corroded here (galvanized layers wear out over time, compromising the entire thing), or faulty ones that are uneconomical to repair so they're run at less capacity until a new one can be brought in. It actually takes years to even plan and sort out much, not to speak of actually doing it, we had a damaged transformer (internal cooling channel in the main casting had cracked) kept on with reduced capacity on life support under constant watch by rotating crews for like... 4 years. There's native lands to consider (they get REALLY pissy about so much as a nut or bolt inadvertedly bouncing onto their land, if even a wift of co2 drifts over = They demand heads roll and compensation which with this Woke environment even way out in rural shticks means we swap out politicians before they ever actually learn from mistakes and gain any practical experience), sometimes the road has to be massively upgraded for the transport too because more capacity = More weight > Roads built to handle transport of smaller transformers just aren't up to snuff. Bringing it in is a chapter written into the town history, we base massive world events around when a transformer was brought in "Oh about 2 years after the one on station #4 was switched out" and answer goes "aaah yeah, on this and that date at this very minute" 🤣

I can add a few things here, but I did sign an NDA before I left a phone company a few years ago, so, yeah. 1. Manhole lids are heavy. But not that heavy. I'm 6'1" and 130lbs, opened regular lids all day everyday with just a simple manhole hook. In my 14 years experience, I can remember two lids that were super-heavy. I used the truck to lift them. They weren't special, or covering anything special, just old remnants of the past that were never upgraded. 2. Knowledge of vital cables/cable routes/splices only comes from insider information. Power guys don't know vital/vulnerable places in Telco facilities, and Telco guys don't know the same for Power stuff. 3. Actual Power company and Telco company guys don't really get along very well. Power lineman call Telco lineman slurs like "halfway lineman" because they don't climb the whole pole, or work the high voltage stuff. It's an ego thing. I can remember one single time I worked alongside Power linemen in my career. Typically, Power did their work and moved out of the way, then Cable (If they even showed up), then Telco. 4. Sub-contractors, on the other hand, worked with either Power, Cable or Telco on a regular basis. Their plats, or prints (engineering drawings) were fairly accurate, showing most of, if not all the information I was given for a specific task. 5. All Telco guys are genuine red-necks. I've worked with them all. The northeners, the southeners, white, black, you name it. If you were in construction in the phone company, you're a redneck. I helped a co-worker do an engine swap in his backyard under a couple trees. Certified redneck. 6. At&t was bought up by Southwestern Bell. They adopted the at&t name, and started buying up all the baby-bells. They didn't treat people very nice. When they bought Bellsouth, we had around 600 or so Outside Plant Techs in Florida. In Texas, at that same time, they had 60. 60 people to cover the state of Texas. Lots of layoffs happened. 7. Every single person in Telco Plant construction is certified in M.O.T. road setups. i.e. lane closures for entering manholes or working in a roadway. And so, I would assume the sub-contractors would be also. Out of service cut arounds require very specific permits/scheduled night shifts, bla bla bla. Lots of notices to affected customers... But the only people that would notice an out of schedule manhole opening at 1am would be the few employees left that might be passing by. They would take notice because "Thats MY job!" Hope this helps your mystery case, brb FBI knocking on my door lol.

I saw this story on an a civil engineer channel I watch. That power station was a critical one because it killed power in 2 directions ( couldn’t be rerouted like most others) . It had to be someone who was a lineman or knew how that particular part of the grid was engineered.

I remember in I think 2019 when a friend told me that a nuclear research reactor in the US was infiltrated and raided by armed men who tied up guards and workers and left with a bunch of data without firing a shot. I remember a news article about it at the time but it's vanished.

I think I actually have heard about this one but only because we had a lecture in college about the grid and how laughably bad "renewables" are from a physics professor. Interesting that the media doesn't ever talk about how our energy grid was almost taken down and how easy it would be.

Never mind diesel. You can convert a 4 stroke petrol gen to LPG or Natural Gas with the change of the carb, see ebay Dual Fuel Carburetor LPG&CNG Conversion Kit For HONDA GX340 GX420 also see YT videos on how to refill propane bottles with LPG, LPG (90% propane) is still available from Boat marinas and some Morrisons petrol stations, 70 to 99p per litre
