Bad journalism deserves a lot of the blame. Instead of elevating the discussion, and educating their viewers, they pander to the lowest-common-denominator in order to maximize their ratings. I want evidence and fact based news that is intellectually challenging. I'm sick of all the emotional drivel, celebrity gossip, "reactions", and editorial presented as news.

Journalism is almost gone. There _are_ vestiges remaining in some newspapers and individual investigative TV programs (PBS Frontline in the US and Four Corners in Australia are two stand out examples), but on the whole, journalism has given way to news content delivery. Beyond that, it's on us now, as individuals, to search for facts and truth, cutting out those outlets concerned only with what might trend and by extension generate revenue. It requires more effort and vigilance, but we've never been so connected to our planet. One of the first steps is making the de facto drift away from so-called news outlets a conscious, overt decision. Right now I can think of very little better than telling CNN, for example, to shove it. Spare us your homogenized, hashtag generated stories, parsed and soundbitten by a Brady Bunch grid of analysts, experts, contributors and colleagues, all of whom are on the payroll.

The topic of this conversation is fascinating. I find it erroneous how today's social ego is challenging science with ridiculous mind games. It reminds me of that scene in Jodi Fosters movie "Contact" where the camera catches a shot of the religious extremest on his way to destroy the first mission. His facial expression was so maniacal.

As always Brian Cox shows his understanding of the need for science to be understood by the general population so the important decisions can be made regarding our impact on our planet. Those who don't understand the scientific model need to be educated to understand that we will always not know everything and that being theories they are flexible to accommodate new understandings as we discover them. Marcus Fleuti seems to struggle with understanding the scientific method and resorts to petty name calling rather that putting forward his reasons for dismissing scientific explanations as pseudo science.

Andy, the point is to create the model and then test it against past events to see if it is reliable. Science isn't scientific if it is unable to make predictions.

@andyharpist2938 6 лет назад
You cannot create a model, using past events to make it, and then test it against those past events, and then say 'it's good' and so will predict the future. You might create a equation with a few variables to predict outcomes..we know how to estimate trajectories of bullets for instance,and how planes fly and the forces in bridges...but the infinite variables of climate and weather. It's computer indulgence!

Dr Cox, if the universe is expanding (and I'm sure it is because very bright scientists tell me so) and accelerating, without stop, what happens when the velocity starts to approach the speed of light?
@lameduck1690
@lameduck1690 6 лет назад
You can measure the expansion of the universe yourself. You can measure the redshift of stars, caused by the doppler effect. It is important to note that the thing which is expanding is actually the space between objects, not the objects themselves. Once the velocity of said expansion exceeds the speed of light, and current understanding suggests that it will, our sky will no longer be lit with the light of other star clusters; the light will not be able to reach us. We will only have our own local cluster to gaze upon, and the night sky will be darker than ever before. This likely will not occur for a few hundred thousand years, so stargazers have no need to fear.
@michaeljohnangel6359
@michaeljohnangel6359 6 лет назад
Hi Mr Jones: thank you for replying. My problem is that nothing can reach the speed of light, let alone exceed it. Or is this no longer true?
@SamuelRaines
@SamuelRaines 2 года назад
@@michaeljohnangel6359 Late response :) No "thing" can reach the speed of light, but in one of his videos he talks about how spacetime can expand faster than the speed of light. My very poor memory has me wondering if it was because it doesn't have mass, and that's the reason the "can't reach the speed of light" rule doesn't apply. Worth looking into further!

An ignorant electorate isn't the main problem. No matter how educated and informed they are, uncontrolled money determines the agenda post-election. Brexit and Trump are the result of money via wealthy individuals and corporations determining the priorities in the legislatures. Yes Britain has strict election funding laws but we saw that selective enforcement -- by those in power -- made those laws moot. The electorate isn't running government -- the oligarchs are.

It was older voters who are afraid of change... but it remains to be seen, it may actually be beneficial. I voted remain but never try to predict or judge something until it’s put into practice. Even though I voted remain I did recognise the ridiculous amount of red tape involved in Euro politics. The only thing that really scares me is if future UK governments slowly start changing the human rights act. The EU has the one bang right. We won’t be able to take cases to the EU courts for example (which often overruled UK ones) the highest court we can go to will be within the U.K... but guess that’s what Brexit was, to decide for ourselves without EU interference
@hooligan9794
@hooligan9794 6 лет назад
I think you are being too prejudicial when you say of older voters that their motivation was that they are afraid of change. Also, a very large group of people between 25 and 50 (something like 45%) voted leave. I certainly don't consider people in their mid to late twenties or early thirties old but that may be a matter of perspective. I think sometimes younger people (college age) don't understand the history of their own societies. This kind of change isn't new and it is not without significant problems. In politics at the moment, the Overton window has been pushed so far left that I would now be considered on the right, where 15 years ago I would have been firmly on the left. I haven't actually changed my views very much, though I will say my views on economics have definitely moved rightward a bit as I have grown older. I am socially liberal. Pro gay marriage, pro choice (though not without limits). I believe in enlightenment values and find it so depressing that the crazy brand of left wing politics is surrendering truth and liberty for the sake of feelings. Also the current trend toward identity (group) rights as opposed to individual rights is very worrying. History has taught us over and over and over again that this form of politics invariably leads to bad outcomes. Quite often nightmarish outcomes. The older people who don't like the current changes that they see happening are not "afraid of change" they are afraid of changes for the worse. Which is hardly the same thing. People who are old (60plus) have seem more change in their lifetimes than any humans who have ever lived. You do them a discredit to dismiss their concerns so blithely. None of what I have said here makes a case for Brexit, nor was it meant to. I, were I a citizen of the UK, would have voted to leave the EU. I would have done so because I loathe large and largely unaccountable bureaucracies. Such are bad at the best of times but far worse when not elected. German guilt for WWII led Angela Merkel to invite a huge number of people into Europe about which no other member state in the Schengen area had any say. This is on the face of it making a mockery of the concept of sovereign states. Further, as someone who has studied the history of Islam to some extent, I am not naive about that particular religion or its goals. Being an adherent of Islam is not grounds of course for immediate condemnation nor immediate refusal of immigration approval but mass Islamic immigration does concern me. I should also point out that it has absolutely nothing to do with race. Such accusations are either the result of deep and abiding stupidity or a very sinister and dishonest attempt to circumvent an argument with lazy cries of bigotry. I am not suggesting at all that you have or would do such but I am sure you have seen such accusations levelled. All of this is just to suggest that the reason for leave and indeed for remain are not simple. I have never presumed as much about the remain case but I see people on the remain side doing so the leave side all to often. Though I am happy to say, you do not seem like such a person to me!

Michael Michael Not to me no. I remember the simplest of questions, to stay in or leave. I remember the then Prime minister saying on national tv, along with all the other major players, that that meant leaving the customs union and single market. I was never ‘misinformed’ i’m sorry if you didn’t understand it (if you voted to remain) but that would be your fault and not mine. My point is how the left in media constantly drop caseous remarks about a democratic vote with ‘post truth’ and the title of this interview. This is the same left wing media in Australia that tried to spread hate and utter non truths and spite about a film called “the red pill” (for example) which some of the news networks hadn’t even seen! The hypocrisy is palpable. The left will always either try and shut differing opinions down, accuse everyone who has a different opinion of ‘racism’ or ‘white privilege’ or maybe ‘stupidity’ even. They have an arrogance that is almost cancerous. I can understand the environment point wholly. There is no doubt the earth is warming.....but to drop a democratic vote for the UKs choice to self governance and a very few peoples ‘opinion’ on global warming are two completely different things, and to conflate the two or to try and put them together is the epitome if the arrogance i described earlier and is an insult to everyone who voted to restore sovereignty back to Britain. And please remember that the lies were from remain, Remember “immediate” economic chaos for just voting to leave. Remember 800,000 jobs lost if we voted to leave. The economy has GROWN and unemployment at record lows AGAIN for another year. And lets not forget Cleggys “An EU army is a dangerous fantasy” And call me Daves “WW3” threat.

Fek The First I, like you, voted to leave based on views I developed during the campaign. I get very angry when remainers assert that I am too old, ignorant, stupid or racist to have voted rationally. I voted as I did based on clear reason, something most remainers failed to do.

'The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.' “For climate change, there are many scientific organizations that study the climate. These alphabet soup of organizations include NASA, NOAA, JMA, WMO, NSIDC, IPCC, UK Met Office, and others. Click on the names for links to their climate-related sites. There are also climate research organizations associated with universities. These are all legitimate scientific sources. If you have to dismiss all of these scientific organizations to reach your opinion, then you are by definition denying the science. If you have to believe that all of these organizations, and all of the climate scientists around the world, and all of the hundred thousand published research papers, and physics, are all somehow part of a global, multigenerational conspiracy to defraud the people, then you are, again, a denier by definition. So if you deny all the above scientific organizations there are a lot of un-scientific web sites out there that pretend to be science. Many of these are run by lobbyists (e.g.., Climate Depot, run by a libertarian political lobbyist, CFACT), or supported by lobbyists (e.g., JoannaNova, WUWT, both of whom have received funding and otherwise substantial support by lobbying organizations like the Heartland Institute), or are actually paid by lobbyists to write Op-Eds and other blog posts that intentionally misrepresent the science.” thedakepage.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/how-to-assess-climate-change.html

One could list thousands of ways our life is possible directly because of science. How could you possibly be so dismissive and negative about this expertise?

Science makes occasional mistakes (and corrects them when needed). Conspiracy theorists make demonstrably false claims more or less continuously (and refuse to back down). But its not a matter of who is more trustworthy. Science aims to make experiments reproducible and evidence verifiable so that others can double check. Science does not demand or in any way require trust. This is just an illusion that results from an inability to do science.

What is terrible is practical skills have not been encouraged but theory has been promoted so hard. As a result, even if the theory is correct there are few people who can turn the theory into becoming something useful with their practical skills. Universities have piles of research but few people to turn what is found into something useful. So all that happens is it is there to gather dust or stored on some memory source.

The question posed is naming "Brexit" is then ironically answered by Cox who mentions anti-democracy, dis-trust etc. THAT is why we are having brexit because the situation we have now is anti-democratic, pro-propaganda, trust etc. The questioner is taking the the reasons of those who voted for Brexit and passing them off as anti-Brexit values.

The requisite question that should be asked of Cox (but won't be, of course) is whether he believes it is at least possible that there is an intelligence behind it all. It's too tricky a question for him to answer without showing that his belief system informs his science. If you haven't already gathered that from the interview that did take place.

Sure, the question is, 'how do you counter the treatment of opinion as fact'? This is yet another example of the corrective effects of war, which we can no longer fight. The expansion of bureaucracy, for example-- In a major war (like WW 2) countries realize they must put those resources to the war effort, so they find the motivation to fire people in government - a motivation that eludes them in peacetime. When fighting a war, a country simply can't afford to deal with wild opinions. It must, to win the war, get grounded and stay grounded in actual fact. In peacetime, the government and its people can afford to be tolerant or jovial about wild opinions. In wartime, by contrast, there will be sideways pressure and pressure from above to stay focused on the real factors that must be dealt with to win the war. Among the biggest challenges we face is how we enable the corrective outcomes of war, without going to war. We can't fight big, way-of-life threatening wars any more. The professor doesn't refer to this issue, but it's major, and it's not spoken about.

Climate change? It always changes and has been recorded through warm and cool periods in recent history e.g. Medieval Warm Period, Little Ice Age, 11 year cycles in response to sun cosmic rays. The big threat today is the mad paranoia about human produced CO2 threatening the world climate. Just 40 years ago we were told we were entering another ice age. The primary greenhouse gas is water vapour (90% impact). CO2 is about 3% and only a fraction of that is caused by man. The notion that our CO2 production will wreck the world climate is nonsensical. It's time we focused on real issues.

It's simple why the disconnect occurred. The complexity of the workings of our civilization and it's institutions have exceeded and clashed against what our animal instincts can tolerate. And since at the heart of it people are driven entirely by their instincts, they rejected civilization. It only took a sign of weakness from the administrators of it's institutions to unleash the baying mob. The process is not yet complete, but entropy will win in the end.

The word is 'disconnection' not 'disconnect'. "Then you ask the question 'How then do we go about answering that question?'" The threat to our civilization is the utter failure of the supposedly thinking classes to think clearly. There appears to be a strong link between education (or at least modern education) and an absence of a defence against stupid mass delusions.

Essentially what Brain is referring to is the "Village people" hypothesis. Whilst we do live on a planet with human numbers in the Billions, many are psychologically in the past (hunters and gatherers in comparably small groups). In today's media driven social environments it's far easier for large groups of "village people" to form alliances in order to spread their emotionally based rhetoric (prejudice). Whilst anti- elitism is morally justifiable , anti-intelligence ( or presuming it's merely a "alternative" way to think) is confusing the fact that many people whom may seem part of a "elite" may also be grouped with the scientific establishment. When in fact, if anyone actually choosers to seek the information for themselves the scientific community (consensus) is at odds to many of the main streams political agendas. Thus the "elite" and the "intellectuals" are not overall within the same social groups. Or in more laymens terms ( everyday language). Don't be stupid!... stupid!. You may not currently comprehend much of how science functions . but it functions and we'd be far worse off without it ( disease as only one example).

The claim of AGW proponents that there would be an isothermal troposphere in the absence of "greenhouse" gases contravenes the Second Law of Thermodynamics as it would not be the state of maximum entropy, having more gravitational potential energy per molecule at higher altitudes and yet the same mean molecular kinetic energy and thus unbalanced energy potentials. Thermodynamic equilibrium is reached when there are no remaining unbalanced energy potentials and so the sum of (KE + PE) is homogeneous over altitude. Thus, since PE varies, so does KE, that is the temperature becomes warmer at the base of the troposphere (where PE is least) without any back radiation needed. All surface temperatures on all planets can be correctly explained based on this, so if back radiation could do extra surface warming then we would all cook. to be fair, all of these climate change ideas that may or may not help in 100 years fail to consider that we have no clue what life will be like in 100 years. 100 years ago they had much different problems than we do now. its far better to focus on producing better energy sources, curing diseases and helping modernize third world countries than what something like the Paris Accord wants or just get rid of all fossil fuels right now and other non practical ideas

The biggest threat to all civilizations, is not a meteor or a tyrant; but simply the speed and pace of technological innovation and achievement. The lack of knowledge and the ability to develop artifacts, allow external threats to become empirical agents of destruction. Consider the US, or even China, technological innovation is ensuring their status as a world power or growing one; and will give these societies a spectrum of answers to threats or simply change. Consider that with all our current technology and the possibilities it has we have only used it in rather minor ways - we as a society could be living on top of the seas, under oceans, in space stations orbiting planets; open innovation may illustrate society need to change, and essentially there needs to be a focus on the development of the economy; because it is the life blood of change and development.

How I introduce the concept of Peak Oil; "What can I do"? According to the experts you should: 1. Garden with sustainable agriculture techniques (less pesticides and fertilizer (organic or better yet permaculture)). 2. Buy food and manufactured goods made locally 3. Pay down debt 4. Learn skills they will be useful in the future and make friends that have useful skills you don't have (related to providing food, water, shelter, and medical care. A necessary skill is organic/permaculture gardening/farming). Very important: medical skills are the best way to ensure your survival. All others will gladly sacrifice their life to protect your life, so you are around to use your medical knowledge to keep their families alive. 5. I recommend to invest some money into technologies to increase the "carrying capacity" of the planet (high risk investments); A. decrease environmental impact per capital B. alternatives for our food system input to improve production C. alternatives to our current living arrangements, D. alternatives to our plastics industry, E. alternatives to disaster capitalism F. "Savior technologies", ie faster-than-light travel, "game changer" technologies, ie Cold fusion energy & "delaying technologies", ie deep drilling technologies. 6. I also recommend you inform and prepare your family, friends, and others. It is best to initially suggest people have an emergency kit... for any emergency such as flood, earthquake, tornado, hurricane, loss of electricity due to a winter storm. Then, if the friend or relative puts together a disaster kit, what I do is introduce Peak Oil (by telling them of the 43 second movie trailer m.natgeotv.com/ca/2210-thecollapse/videos/collapse-of-earth , the "National Geographic Collapse" movie on RU-vid, & free book downloads; 7. For the truly motivated, a community based organization to mitigate Climate Change and Peak Oil is: www.transitionus.org/ (For non USA; transitionnetwork.org/) Google "2052 free book summary download", & The free book "Plan C" workbook download; www.communitysolution.org/newsolutionsreports/new-solutions-11-plan-c-curtailment-and-community?rq=plan%20c See the Facebook page: "National Geographic Collapse movie"

A disbelief in climate change/global warming does not mean ya get to sit on ya haunches n use your disbelief as a lazy excuse to do nothing. Pollution n destruction have the same results as climate change and the same solutions. NO ONE can dispute that we ARE harming the earth, our environment, our spaceship through the solar system. Like a spaceship, our resources are currently limited (until we go off-planet in a viable sustainable way for significant %), we have already reached peak oil, peak coal, peak gas, peak soil, peak phosphorous etc. Our resources are dwindling and most new techniques are clearly more hazardous (fracking) all they do is buy a little time. it's short sighted and the toxins used cannot be entirely removed, so those toxic chemicals go into our fresh water supply, concentrations will get stronger and people will get sicker, maybe you will get sick from drinking water thats soaked up these toxins The pollution and destruction we ARE causing collectively is making our environment increasingly hostile (look up soil infertility, its scary that half the world's soil will be unable to produce food in 30 years (with extra mouths to feed, we will somehow have to produce more food in 1 year than all farmed since agricultural revolution) even soil in europe, america etc will lose fertility. we are losing soil at a rate of 24 billion hectares each year. uk alone has lost 40% fertility in last 50 years -some of the world's 'youngest' soils, from being locked away unused under ice sheets until relatively recently)
